ummerville is jumping into the holiday festivities with both feet. at this month’s Third Thursday, enjoy the sights and sounds of the holidays.

From 5-8 p.m. today, hutchinson Square will be aglow with twinkling white lights, carolers will be caroling, and there will be hot cocoa and cookies. horse and carriage rides will be taking tours around the square, and various music groups will be performing. also, make sure to check out the Best and Brightest Store window decorating contest and vote for your favorite. adding to the festive atmosphere will be two walking performances of “a christmas carol” by storyteller time lowry. The performances take place in different venues around town and are limited to 40 people each. The tours are at 5:30 and 7 p.m., and tickets are $10. top off the evening by attending Mr. and Mrs. Fezziwig’s warehouse christmas Ball at art and Soul, 115 w.

Benefiting the lowcountry Food Bank, the Southern BBQ network sanctioned event is asking attendees to bring a minimum of five nonperishable food items.

require marination or maceration to birth their best flavors — well, angel oak restaurant is “that dish” now. tooled with a quality chef, fueled by a hospitable staff and having standards that meet ambitions, Jay Kees may want to scale back the menu or hire a sous chef as the demands of his menu may break the boughs of angel oak restaurant. cutting some slack in the back of the house will allow the restaurant to flourish just like its namesake tree.

fire street food looks to the east for inspiration

come and play with “Fire,” beckons one of the newer restaurants on King Street. and by fire, the establishment means a medley of pan-asian foods in a trendy, contemporary setting.

Fire Street Food opened its first location in March in Savannah and then followed with another in September in charleston.

The lowcountry location formerly housed Burger Babies.

Shades of turquoise and orange color the restaurant, and while the old Burger Babies may have featured elements of contemporary asian design, Fire Street Food features fare from the asian realm:

Fire Street breaks its menu into several categories, including skewers, sushi rolls, authentic eats and its signature street eats.

The latter sort consists of items like spicy Thai barbecue ribs ($9.95), pork chops ($8.95), crispy chicken wings ($6.95), stir-fried noodles ($8.95) and lemongrass chicken ($8.95).

The skewers, like the Japanese yakitori, are grilled over a charcoal flame.

The old city Jail will once again come alive with the sights and sounds of Jail Break 4, a music and arts festival. over the past few years, Jail Break has proven itself to be a great festival that strongly supports a variety of local creative talent. expect to see paintings, photography, sculptures and art installations throughout the inside of the jail as well as artisans selling their wares in a market-like atmosphere outside. in the days of grunge rock, which now seem oh-so long ago, there was any number of rock bands that had varying degrees of success.

There were also a few titans of the genre, including nirvana, pearl Jam, alice in chains and, of course, Soundgarden.

Soundgarden was never apologetic about its heavy sound — it was the Black Sabbath of its day — and between the howling vocals of chris cornell and the sludgy guitar riffs of Kim Thayil, few bands came close to its

auditions for a new singer would commence shortly. with all the drama, fans probably should be thankful to be getting anything from aerosmith.

Still, tepid songs such as “luV XXX,” “tell Me” and “can’t Stop lovin’ you” (which features tyler singing with country star carrie underwood) likely will leave some fans scratching their heads.

Those tunes and others seem like rejects from the band’s “pump” era, and despite having years to recharge their batteries, the band sounds listless and uninspired on a lot

of the album.

There are a few winning moments, as on “out go the lights,” when the band seems to recall the period of time when they rocked harder than just about any band in america. to tyler’s credit, his voice still sounds as spry as it did on “toys in the attic,” which was released more than 35 years ago. while the album itself is mediocre, at least we know that the inevitable world tour holds some promise.

almost always as cerebral as they are funky. “The Flip is another honey” finds doughty leaning back toward his Soul coughing roots without quite making a total connection.

For the most part, this is an album of covers, but since doughty has his own way of doing things musically, these covers are anything but straightforward.

The opener, “Sunshine,” features doughty rapping over samples of John denver’s “Sunshine on My Shoulders.” doughty also revisits the work of the late country/folk singer with a more traditional (for him, at least) version of “take

Me home, country roads” that features rosanne cash. other interesting moments include takes on “Sit down, you’re rocking the Boat” from “guys & dolls,” cheap trick’s “Southern girls” and “reach out,” and randy newman’s “Mankind.” other artists covered include red house painters, low, doveman and Thin lizzy. countless artists have gone the cover album route, but doughty gets extra points for mixing things up a bit.

power. after breaking up in 1997, the band reunited a couple of years ago. after a successful tour, the band headed back into the studio.

Fans of that distinct Soundgarden sound of the ’90s will be happy to hear that it remains largely intact 16 years after the band released its last studio album. once again, cornell’s voice and Thayil’s ax are in sync with one another, and the resulting music doesn’t issue forth from your speakers or headphones so much as it oozes, like an evil musical syrup from another planet. tracks such as “Been away too long” and “a Thousand days Before” will have you

digging for your copy of “Superunknown” for comparison.

The album’s best track, the dark and foreboding “Blood on the Valley Floor,” ends any argument fans might be having about Soundgarden’s return to form. while the band members are a decade and a half older than when the last album was released, they still haven’t forgotten how to rock.

he task of encapsulating the essence of abraham lincoln in a single film took Steven Spielberg roughly three times as long as it took the 16th president to win the civil war, abolish slavery and put the country on the course to recovery. creating such a historical epic may not compare to the colossal task of saving a bloodily divided nation. But by hollywood standards, “lincoln” is as monumental as it gets, even for a couple of multiple academy award winners as Spielberg and the man he chose to play the president, daniel day-lewis.

Born in Britain, day-lewis had to think about lincoln not only as a towering historical figure, but also as a foreign statesman whose portrayal would be a sensitive matter for u.S. audiences that revere the president.

“Because of the nature of the iconography surrounding his life and the extent to which he is mythologized and carved in stone, it’s very difficult to imagine that one could ever approach him, to get close enough,” day-lewis said in a recent interview alongside Spielberg. “i was very shy about the idea of taking on this. plus, i like working here. i’ve been tremendously privileged in being able to work in this country over the years.

The idea of desecrating the memory of the most-beloved president this country has ever known was just kind of a fearful thing to me,” said day-lewis, who earned bestactor oscars for “My left Foot” and “There will Be Blood.”

day-Lewis is breathtaking in majestic ‘Lincoln’

ou think you’re not going to be surprised by daniel day-lewis as abraham “lincoln” — you’ve seen the photographs, you know he looks right — but the first full shot of him in Steven Spielberg’s majestic “lincoln” may well take your breath away.

There he is in silhouette, the light behind him: the long profile, the bearded chin, the stovepipe hat, the careworn face. he looks weary (we watch him grow older in this film, though its time span is brief), but he speaks with a quiet kindness, in a surprisingly light, high and almost singsong voice that whispers of his Southern heritage. he seems folksy, deliberate and wise; someone we’d like to know, someone we feel we already know. This is movie magic — history coming to life, before our eyes. “lincoln,” which primarily focuses on the fight to end the civil war and pass the 13th amendment (which abolished slavery) in early 1865, is a history lesson, but one caught in the soft light of gas lamps.

never feels rushed; Spielberg and screenwriter tony Kushner tell their story efficiently, but give it room to breathe. “lincoln” is crammed full of characters and story, but much of its pleasure is how it zooms in on two people who are rarely alone.

Sally Field is haunting and vivid as Mary, a strange, intense woman grieving a dead child and never forgetting that her revered husband once “threatened me with the madhouse.” day-lewis, once again, disappears into a role and

ven after all this time, author Stephenie Meyer, the Mormon mother of three who became an overnight literary sensation with the 2005 publication of her young-adult novel, “twilight,” can’t explain the phenomenon that surrounds the grand romance between vampire edward cullen and human teenager Bella Swan, characters played on-screen by robert pattinson and Kristen Stewart. “i don’t know what makes people love it, i don’t know what makes people hate it,” said Meyer, seated comfortably in a suite of a Beverly hills hotel. “But i do know that the feeling of being in love is a good feeling. we want to feel that emotion.” “i’ve always said that,” Stewart said to Meyer, sitting beside her. “it’s so vicarious.”

That required them to battle nervous studio executives who wanted Stewart’s interpretation of Bella to be less tortured, hardened detractors who railed against overwrought story lines and pop culture satirists who often turned the franchise into its own punch line.

Meyer already had made the leap from arizona housewife to best-selling author when she first met Stewart, then an up-andcoming actress building her career primarily through roles in indie films. in the intervening years, Meyer’s stature and influence as a young-adult author became comparable to that enjoyed

by J.K. rowling or Suzanne collins, though critics never responded to her writing the way enthusiastic readers did.

Stewart, however, has garnered plenty of acclaim, if not in the often tepidly reviewed “twilight” movies, then in small challenging roles in films such as Sean penn’s “into the wild” or walter Salles’ upcoming adaptation of the Beat generation classic “on the road.” She’s also endured a tabloid celebrity she never planned for thanks to her on-again, off-again relationship with “twilight” co-star pattinson. reaching the end of the saga was particularly satisfying for the actress, who seemed pleased to be able to take Bella to the happy if somewhat complicated conclusion of her journey, and to move on to the next phase of her career. “i’m so ready to be done,” said the 22-year-old. directed like its predecessor by oscar winner Bill condon, “Breaking dawn - part 2” begins with Bella Swan as a newborn vampire and a new mother, whose half-human daughter, renesmee, threatens to spark a war among tribes of vampires from around the globe.

The ruling class in italy, the Volturi, wrongly assume that Bella and edward have transformed a human child into a vampire, something that is expressly forbidden, and gather forces to take down the entire cullen clan.

The story line gave Stewart the opportunity to bring a new dimension to a character who’d always considered herself ordinary and clumsy; with her supernatural powers, she could be graceful and beautiful, lightningfast and lethal. “i played her as human for so long, so the enhanced version of her made so much sense to me,” said Stewart. “everything so perfectly fit that i was so amped to do it.”

Meyer recalled standing in front of the monitor on the set of the film when Stewart shot her first scene as vampire Bella, nervously anticipating the outcome. “we were dancing by the monitors: ‘look at her go,’ ” Meyer said as Stewart pretended to leave the room, not wanting to hear the compliment. “it was such a huge weight lifted. it wasn’t a different character. it was Bella, but it was a totally different Bella. it was so exciting.” her newfound abilities also might help to dispel notions that Bella is too passive a character, a young girl too dependent on her boyfriend for her happiness, though Meyer and Stewart flatly reject that view.

“Flop the roles. if Bella was a vampire and ed-

ward was the human and you changed nothing but the genders, none of that criticism would exist,” said Stewart. “it would be ‘wow, he just laid everything on the line for her. it’s so amazing, and it must take such strength to subject yourself to that.’ also, the relationship is entirely equal.”

“She gets what she wants,” Meyer added. “plus, she’s the one that keeps the bus going the entire time,” continued Stewart. “if it was up to edward, they would have given up at the first movie.”

The 700-page-plus “Breaking dawn” novel was released just a few months before director catherine hardwicke’s adaptation of “twilight” reached theaters in 2008. The book was met with controversy, even among Meyer’s loyal fans. renesmee’s birth is an especially gruesome sequence, one that condon had to carefully navigate for the previous pg-13-rated movie, and some readers complained about Bella’s choice to carry the child to term despite obvious risks to her own health.

There was also grumbling about an ending that felt too soft, too anticlimactic. “i had a lot of concerns about making ‘Breaking

dawn’ a movie,” said Meyer, who holds final approval on the scripts for the “twilight” films. “There were a lot of things they wanted to change. There were some serious problems.”

Fealty to source material on beloved properties like “twilight” is always a concern. deviate too much from the book and fans, even those who maybe weren’t wild about what was on the page initially, will cry foul. But it was Meyer herself and screenwriter Melissa rosenberg who have written each of the five scripts for the films, who devised a new ending over dinner one night in Vancouver while the second “twilight” movie, “new Moon,” was filming. of course, neither Meyer nor Stewart will reveal the new conclusion, but Meyer believes the solution is one fans will embrace.

She and her star are somewhat less reserved in their elation for the digital trickery used for renesmee, who in the book is born the size of a normal baby but whose unusual parentage results in rapid growth. (The character is played in the film by 12-year-old actress Mackenzie Foy.) Stewart was initially asked to hold a robotic doll in-

stead of a real baby for some scenes, but that didn’t yield quite the right result. “it was the most creepy, horrific horror doll you’ve ever seen, and it was mechanical,” Meyer said with a laugh. “it’s gouging her cheek and sticking to her hair. we reshot the whole thing. we didn’t wind up using any of the footage, but that doll was so horrifying. i mean that doll comes to life and kills people.”

“They should have had a real baby,” Stewart said. “i really missed having a real baby. They were the scenes i looked forward to the most, and then i had this thing. it was really disheartening.” instead, the filmmakers employed some techniques david Fincher and his team pioneered for “The curious case of Benjamin Button,” projecting Foy’s face on older and younger girls as the script required.

Stewart and Meyer are ready for “twilight” to come to a close. its years of pop culture dominance have taken a toll on the women, particularly Stewart, who appears resigned to the glaring spotlight, though no more comfortable with it.

The two discussed the public’s desire to put celebrities on pedestals only to

knock them down and the reality of the 24-hour news cycle as the mechanism that’s destroyed the mystery of the movie star.

Stewart compared the need-to-know frenzy to the public wanting another movie, one played out in magazines, on the radio and on television, based on the actors’ real lives. Things turned especially personal for Stewart last summer when photos showed the actress apparently cheating on boyfriend pattinson with rupert Sanders, who directed Stewart in “Snow white and the huntsman.” “people are just going to write the movie version of your life and consume it the way they please. i get the inclination to be entertained by that as well, so go for it. have at it. take it. take it,” Stewart said, pulling at her cashmere sweater. “But you knew nothing about my relationship before. you know less now. how could you?”

Meyer sympathizes with Stewart’s plight. until the stars came along, the author, a self-described introvert troubled that people felt that they knew her without ever having met her, was the one in the eye of the storm.

For Meyer, life after “twilight” will involve more movies: open road will release writer-director andrew niccol’s adaptation of her novel, “The host,” in March, and she recently produced her own indie film, “austenland,” based on friend Shannon hale’s novel.

Stewart will join Ben affleck in the lighthearted film “Focus,” in which she’ll play a woman who falls for a veteran con-man.

Meyer said new tales set in the “twilight” universe continue to rumble in her head, but she’s not sure she’s willing to write them down and reignite the firestorm of publicity and attention.

“The stories are there. i’m just not sure i’d want to get into the hurricane again,” Meyer said. “Maybe on my deathbed i’ll gather everybody around and tell them what happens: who dies, who turns into a bad guy. and then i’ll breathe my last breath and be done.” “what a perfect way to end it,” Stewart added.

She attended Bellevue high and studied dance at cornish college of the arts and acting at Seattle children’s Theater — “a fantastic place to be young and in the performing arts.” teachers rita giomi and amy harris, in particular, helped her prepare for an audition for new york’s circle in the Square Theatre School, where she was accepted after high school. after time in new york trying to jump-start a theater career, Marks moved to los angeles (“there’s more theater here than anyone thinks there is”) six years ago, and has divided her

time between the stage and screen. her credits include roles in the movie “Mona lisa Smile,” the tV series “Southland” and numerous stage productions.

The audition for “The Sessions,” in front of writer/ director Ben lewin (himself a polio survivor), was one of many for this working actor, but she landed the part and quickly dove into research. She studied writings by o’Brien (who died in 1999), particularly the autobiographical essay on which the film is based, and watched a short documentary about o’Brien, “Breathing lessons.”

But nothing quite prepared her for the impact of work-

ing with hawkes. The actor, an oscar nominee for “winter’s Bone,” faced enormous physical challenges: acting with almost no movement, lying on a ball to contort his body as o’Brien’s was, learning to use a mouth-stick to type and dial a phone, losing himself within a character. “it was so extraordinary to be witnessing that type of work. it doesn’t seem like it’s humanly possible, what he’s doing,” Marks said. “i came home from the first day of shooting and said to my fiance, ‘i swear to god, he’s going to win an oscar.’ ” Marks shared in the film’s Special Jury award for ensemble acting at Sundance, and has since traveled with

the film to other festivals.

She’s happily noticing that, thanks to “The Sessions,” more opportunities are coming her way. “The tides are definitely shifting, which is incredibly cool and i’m really, really grateful for it.”

Marks recently tested for her first tV pilot, and has several film and stage projects in the works, but “The Sessions” will remain a treasured experience. “i struggle with feeling like i really deserve any kind of award for acting, as John and helen stand alone, but i’m really honored to be included in any of it,” she said of the Sundance recognition. “i’m the luckiest actor in the world that i got to do this.”

overly cute mental illness comedy offers plenty of ‘silver Linings’ By roger Moore MCT

ovies about the mentally ill tend to render them in cute, charming strokes with only the occasional blast of ugly to remind us, “oh, yeah, this gorgeous, lovelorn soul is still troubled.” and “Silver linings playbook” has a hint of that.

Bradley cooper is cast as a mentally ill man who probably got out of the psychiatric ward a bit too early, and Jennifer lawrence as a young cop’s widow who isn’t really coping with that fact, and the hollywood ending is written all over it.

But cooper gives his most natural, affecting and compelling performance yet as pat, a divorced ex-schoolteacher who won’t accept the fact that he’s divorced, or that the school system would never rehire him. people may duck him in amusing ways, but the message is clear. he’s dangerous. and as tiffany, lawrence makes us forget her dewy youth just minutes into her brittle, biting turn as a woman whose unbalanced rage is even more cleverly concealed than pat’s. pat’s mom (Jacki weaver of “animal Kingdom”) is the one who has the faith that her son would be better off at home in philadelphia. his sports-nut dad (robert de niro, perfect) isn’t so sure. when pat pulls a plastic garbage bag over his sweatshirt so that he can jog and lose weight faster, dad seems to have a point. “i’m getting really fit for nikki,” the son explains.

That’s the ex-wife pat expects to win back. others aren’t that delusional, which is why the shrill Veronica (Julia Stiles) nags her husband (John ortiz) to invite pat, whom she fears and despises, to dinner. She

But that jaw-droppingly awkward dinner meeting is where this david o. russell (“The Fighter”) film takes off. The sparks fly between these two, and not necessarily romantic ones. They have an easy rapport, joking and comparing medications. But pat’s unshakable belief that he’s winning back his ex, who has a restraining order on him, makes him seem touchier, scarier and further gone than tiffany. until testy tiffany takes a moment to assure us that it’s a much tighter race than you’d expect. pat has these little mantras he picked up from group therapy and psychological counseling. “if you stay positive, you have a shot at a silver lining.” That’s what he’s looking for in all this. tiffany? “i don’t get what i want, oK?” her volatility is a frightening thing, especially when she feels she’s in a contest. “you think that i’m crazier than you.” russell, famous for his own off-camera temper, deftly bal-

ances each amusing encounter with tragic revelations and unbalanced moments, threatening to bring matters to an ugly head, or deepen the connection between these two disconnected people. in film and in fiction there’s always a glib cause-and-effect with mental illness: “This” led directly to “that.” we get a little of that here as we’re given the back story and we meet enough relatives to see the trees these two fun but dysfunctional apples fell from. anupam Kher is the cute psychotherapist. Shea whigham is pat’s successful, more functional brother, a performance that suggests a less sensitive oaf who unthinkingly channeled dad’s philadelphia eagles obsession into a safer corner of his psyche. and chris tucker turns up as a funny, dialeddown mental patient pal of pat’s who can seem to be the most normal of all of them.

But he lets us sense that coiled up inside is a sneaky, motor-mouthed maniac.

“Silver linings playbook,” adapted from Matthew Quick’s novel, is a ringing endorsement of “the talking
