... I dream 1 n e h W 01 aker 2 B p m a C Ronneca Watkins Camp Director

When I envision Camp Baker 2011 … I hear the pitter patter of little feet as our Yeladim campers walk to the Pearlstine pool to begin to learn how to swim in the arms of our experienced lifeguards; I hear the voices of our Chaverim campers as they laugh in excitement when meeting old friends, while waiting for new adventures to being; I watch both our returning and new CITs becoming confident young teens, and I see an incredible “dream team” of co-directors, counselors and staff that have years of camp experience. As Director of Camp Baker 2011, I’d like to introduce myself. I am a mother of a camper, a former JCC Camp Baker registrar, and a former JCC Diva camp director. I am now ready to make Camp Baker, once again, the Number One Day Camp in Charleston! Camp Baker has always had the reputation of being one of the only camps in Charleston offering a Red Cross swim program. But our camp is so much more than that. No other day camp in Charleston has a first rate Early Childhood Education program beginning at 18 months and Specialty camps for children grades 1st through 6th. We have quality staff that provide a safe and nurturing environment for your children. As your 2011 Camp Baker Director, I have implemented a number of changes, including extended camp hours, more specialty camps, healthier lunches and snacks, more Judaics and jam-packed programming guaranteed to keep your camper interested and excited about each camp day. Please stop by the JCC on Sunday, March 20th, from 10 am to 1 pm to meet me and my amazing staff, as well as to secure your child’s spot by signing him or her up for the summer sessions that interest them. I can’t wait to show you our newly renovated facility and help you choose the best camp sessions that fit your child’s needs. Being a mother, I know that you are entrusting us with your most precious gift(s) and we are ready and able to accept this responsibility. Camp Baker 2011 is all about fun in a safe and secure environment. I can’t wait to see you on March 20th!

Dream it! Believe it! Make it happen! I have dreamt that Camp Baker will be incredible this summer. Campers, parents, staff and community members will make Camp Baker fabulous this summer! I started attending Camp Baker at 18 months and continued for over 10 years. I learned how to swim in the JCC pool. I am looking forward to my first year as Camp Co-Director. I graduated from the College of Charleston with a degree in Psychology. I bring over 5 years of Head camp staff experience from a Jewish sleepover camp. I am currently working full time for the Charleston JCC and Federation. I grew up in Charleston, attending Addlestone Hebrew Academy. My wife and I live the philosophy that if you dream big then you can make big things happen. Big things are going to happen this summer at Camp Baker!

My name is Makala Boczkowski. I am in my 2nd year working at Camp Baker and I am extremely excited about my new role as Co-Director. I graduated from the University of Nebraska with a degree in Early Childhood Education. I am currently teaching at the Children’s Garden School on Sullivan’s Island. I spent ten summers at Camp Starlight, a premier residential camp in northeastern Pennsylvania. I served as the Lower Camp Girls Head Counselor for the final eight years of that time. I enjoy making an impact on children’s lives and I look forward to helping to create an environment where every camper’s DREAM comes true.

I dream a little dream… that the Pearlstine Pool is bursting with energy, our amazing lifeguards are in the pool leading instructional swim with Yeladim campers and the Chaverim children are perfecting their freestyle stroke while swimming laps. What a wonderful honor to be the Aquatics Director of the Pearlstine Pool for Camp Baker 2011. I grew up in Charleston, spending many a summer day at the JCC pool. I am excited to be a part of Camp Baker 2011 and always remember Dream Big! See you at the Pool!

Leadership Training

Field Trips Team Building

Youth Leadership is important to us at Camp Baker. Our leadership opportunities are balanced with leadership training and handson experience with individual groups. This Camp program is your guide to becoming a great counselor. Camp Giborim includes CIT (Counselor-in-Training) or LIT (Lifeguard-in-Training). The Youth Leadership program allows your camper(s) to participate in training sessions as well as regular camp activities.

CIT (Counselor-in-Training)

LIT (Lifeguard-in-Training)

Participants will work directly with camp groups to get hands-on experience. Training will include leadership, team building skills, child development, community service and program planning. In addition to working with young campers, the CIT’s will have one field trip each session. Mindy Hawkins will be the professional working with and leading these campers for three 2-week sessions.

Dive into the pool during this program to get first-hand experience with lifeguarding. Build confidence in the pool while helping our trained lifeguards in the pool during swim lessons. In addition to working on the pool deck, LIT campers will be trained by Lauren Dumas, JCC Aquatics Director and the JCC Lifeguards.

Camp Baker can cater to your child's specific interests. Our Specialty Camp options are always a reason for returning campers to join the fun once again. These specific camps allow campers to explore his/her areas of interest for two week sessions. Camp Baker has a couple of popular camps that we are bringing back, such as Adventure Camp and Horseback Camp, as well as offering several new ones. These camps have a slightly different schedule than your typical day camp. When possible, campers will also participate in the following: Red Cross instructional Swim, Shabbat celebrations, special events, color wars and Israel Week.
