CEO’s Article - Judi Corsaro, Joint CEO

Look for Jeffrey Buncher’s next article in the September issue of the Jewish VOICE. While I write this, Jeffrey is on a Jewish Federation of North America Campaign Chairs and Directors Mission to Moscow and Israel to see first hand the impact that Federation dollars make. Our 2010 campaign is coming to a close and thanks to the hard work and dedication of our campaign chairs Susan Addlestone Berlijn & Masha Kalinsky (Women’s Division) and Jeffrey Buncher & Alan Toporek (Men’s Division) we are getting closer and closer to our goal of reaching one million dollars. Dollars raised provide critical support for Jews in need. These funds feed the hungry, care for the sick and aged, build Jewish identity, promote arts and culture, educate and advocate—all to ensure a vibrant, connected Jewish community locally, in Israel and worldwide. If we have a financially successful campaign our entire Jewish community in Charleston and our extended Jewish family in Israel and worldwide benefits. There are two very important initiatives that are being launched in our community; one is the Charleston Jews and the other is the Charleston Jewish Food Pantry. Charleston Jews is a YAD outreach initiative that has been spearheaded by Jason Goldberg, Greg Rothschild and Jonathan Zucker. All three of these amazing young men have been involved in YAD (the Young Adult Division of the Charleston Jewish Federation) and committed to growing the program for many years. Charleston Jews offers Jewish singles and couples the opportunity for one very low annual

fee to join the JCC and all three of the synagogues and receive free entrance to all Chabad events for an entire year. On top of this, each new member receives a welcome bag which includes $130 worth of merchandise including Shabbat candlesticks, mezuzah, kosher cookbook, custom designed tzedakah box, wine and a challah just to mention some of what is included. The second new initiative is the Charleston Jewish Community Food Pantry which will be coming to the JCC this fall. The Jewish Community Food Pantry is being sponsored by the Charleston Jewish Social Services and is being co-chaired by Jill Levy and Rachel Lipton. The concept for creating the food pantry came about during a discussion at a Jewish Community Relations Committee (JCRC) meeting. The committee was discussing what our communal response should be to the growing need to fight hunger not only around the world but right here in our own Jewish community. This initiative reflects our commitment to the Jewish values of Tzedakah (justice) and Tikkun Olam (repair of the world) and to serving our community members in need with Kavod (respect). Both of these initiatives are community wide and I commend our wonderful Rabbis and lay leadership of all the congregations, Chabad, the Jewish Community Center and the Charleston Jewish Federation for their leadership. Only with the full support of the community can we ensure access to critical services, programs, and engagement opportunities that benefits all members of our community.

On August 28, Connecting Jewish Women, the second annual program will take place. This event is the culmination of a year of planning by an extraordinary group of women. The program is chaired by Sharon Becker and Jamee Schlesinger and with the support of their amazing committee all of us women can look forward to another memorable day. You can register for the program at www.connectingjewishwomen.org. It has been an extremely fun summer at the JCC. Camp Baker under the direction of Tamar Sternfeld and her amazing staff has provided a memorable summer for all our campers and camp families. This has become my favorite time of year at the JCC because I love watching the happy children, counselors and staff. I especially love the unsolicited hugs I receive from campers! I am very fortunate to work with a group of professionals that are dedicated to providing quality programs and services for our community members. I am also grateful to have the opportunity to work with board members who work tirelessly on behalf of the Federation, JCC and the Jewish community. The Jewish Community Center provides a Jewish campus where all Jewish members of our community affiliated and unaffiliated can come together and engage in Jewish life. To our community members who have provided vital financial assistance to help make it possible for our JCC to continue to work toward achieving financial sustainability, I thank you and commend you for making this important investment.

Thank You Charleston Jewish Federation and the Charleston ‘J’ gratefully acknowledge our Grant Funders and extend our heartfelt appreciation for all their support! To date we have received support from the following foundations: • The Addlestone Foundation • The Sol & Celia Cohen Endowment Fund • The Exchange Club of Charleston • The Harold Grinspoon Foundation • Hebrew Benevolent Society • Hebrew Orphan Society • The Henry & Sylvia Yaschik Foundation • InterTech Group Foundation • The Zucker Family Endowment Fund

Has there been a time when, juggling all that we do, we have been able to find and maintain appropriate boundaries? As old as the struggle are the seeds of a solution. In this workshop, we will explore Judaism’s gift to humanity - Shabbat. Considering the theological underpinnings of its rituals, we will see how Shabbat has always provided a mechanism of checks and balance for the otherwise all - consuming demands of the week, and how it can help us establish balance and boundaries today.

Congress responds to Palestinian push for statehood Updates on the flotilla-replacing ‘fly-in’

IAN is also in the process of putting together a comprehensive plan for community actions leading up to, during and following the potential Palestinian Unilateral Declaration of Independence (UDI) vote at the U.N. The U.S. Senate and House of Representatives both passed resolutions by overwhelming margins backing a plan for a negotiated settlement and rejected the Palestinian request to the U.N for statehood. This reaffirms the U.S. stance on the importance of two viable states living side-by-side in peace and security. The House and Senate voted for a nonbinding resolution that suggested the Obama administration suspend aid to the Palestinian Authority following their deal with Hamas, which is considered a terrorist group by Israel and the U.S. The Senate unanimously approved a similar resolution. Rather than pursuing a two-state solution with Israel, the Palestinian leadership is planning to ask for unilateral recognition of an independent Palestinian state at the September session of the United Nations General Assembly. This is contrary to past agreements between the Palestinians and Israel, United Nations resolutions, the position of the Quartet, and long-standing U.S. policy. This Palestinian push has only served to discourage the peace process, lawmakers said. For more information, visit http://www.jewishfederations.org

YOUNG ADULT DIVISION

The Young Adult Division of the Charleston Jewish Federation Launches “Charleston Jews” It has been several years in the making, but with the persistence of three YAD leaders and the community spirit of so many of our distinguished Jewish organizations, the “Charleston Jews” program has come to fruition. Jason Goldberg, Greg Rothschild, and Jonathan Zucker had a vision of a program that would encourage and promote Jewish community involvement among current and new Jewish residents of Charleston by increasing participation in JCC and synagogue programming and services. The Young Adult Division of the Charleston Jewish Federation is proud to be able to offer the “Charleston Jews” program with the gracious cooperation of the following organizations: Brith Sholom Beth Israel, Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim, Synagogue Emanu-El, Chabad of Charleston and the Lowcountry, and the Charleston JCC. Modeled after a similar program in Charlotte, NC, YAD’s “Charleston Jews” program allows those 35 years of age and under who are new to Charleston, or who are unaffiliated or have been for 3 years, to join the Jewish Community Center and the synagogue of their choice, and gain free entrance to Chabad events, for an entire year

for an affordable price. In addition, members receive a welcome basket worth more than $130, full of Jewish items; A beautiful mezuzah and Shabbat candlesticks, a custommade tzedakah box, a kippah, a Hip Kosher cookbook, local kosher goodies, challah, kosher wine, and more are included. YAD Board members will make personal visits to hand-deliver the welcome baskets to new participants, helping to put warm faces to the Jewish community the new participant has just joined. A “Charleston Jews” membership costs only $180 for singles ($15/month) or $360 for couples and families ($30/month) for the year. The funds raised through Charleston Jews will be reinvested into the program to make it self-sustaining, and will cover marketing, advertising and the cost of the welcome baskets. YAD plans to promote the program to the general public through secular media to reach out to those Jews who do not have any current connections to the Jewish community. The “Charleston Jews” media plan utilizes Facebook, radio, and multiple print media. Already with only a soft launch of the program (which included email

On May 5, 2011 at the Charleston Jewish Community Center, Ruth and Danny Berlinsky were recognized by State of Israel Bonds as community honorees and presented with the Israel Bonds Star of David Award for their leadership and commitment to the Charleston Jewish community and Israel. More than one hundred and fifty people attended and over $700,000 in bonds investments were made in support of the event. Herb Rosner and Eli Hyman served as co-chairmen. Guest speaker, Jeff Jacoby, from the Boston Globe spoke on Israel and the Middle East. Ruth and Danny were presented with their award by their son, Philip. Ruth and Danny were overjoyed with the recognition and the evening. They were also thrilled with the support of Israel Bonds demonstrated by their friends and family in attendance which will help support their beloved Israel. Israel Bonds is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. Throughout its history Israel Bonds have played a vital role in building and strengthening Israel’s economy and the infusion of over $32 billion in Israel Bonds funding has helped Israel evolve into one of the world’s most advanced nations. State of Israel Bonds are a significant means of expressing support for Israel and meeting personal investment goals. Israel has a flawless record of debt repayment and proceeds from Israel Bonds continue to be used as a primary resource for infrastructure development in Israel including roads, ports, airports, natural gas pipelines, new communication links and water desalination plants. Moody’s investment services have called Israel Bonds a ‘critical resource’ for Israel’s economy. For additional information about Israel Bonds, please feel free to contact the office for the Southeast at 404-817-3500 or visit their web site at www.israelbonds.com.

Enrollment is now open for

The Charleston Jewish Community Food Pantry Coming to the JCC this Fall

IEF!

Deadline is October 31, 2011

Israel Education Fellowship Program What is IEF?

The Israel Education Fellowship program offers Jewish youth of the Charleston area the opportunity to enhance their Jewish education by attending institutionally sponsored educational programs in Israel during high school or college. The Fellowship Program is jointly sponsored by the Charleston Jewish Federation, Brith Sholom Beth Israel Congregation, Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim, and Synagogue Emanu-el. Fellows may enroll in educational programs in Israel from their seventh grade year to age 22.

How does it work? To learn more, volunteer or donate to this important cause, please visit www.jewishcharleston.org/foodpantry.

Interview with Jill Levy & Rachel Lipton

Co-Chairs, Charleston Jewish Community Food Pantry Why is the Charleston Jewish Social Services starting a food pantry?

Most of us are not aware that there is hunger in the Jewish community. The Jewish Community Pantry was created to provide emergency food to individuals and families in crisis in the greater Charleston community. One of our goals is to increase awareness of the existence of the challenges many face in meeting their basic needs. Who will it help?

A hungry child, an elderly shut in, a family struggling to make ends meet, families that cannot afford a Shabbat dinner, perhaps someone who is reading this right now. This service will be confidential to maintain respect and dignity for those who may need assistance.

In 3rd grade, after making a contribution of $200, participating students contribute a minimum of $100 and a maximum of $200 per year to the program. Alternatively, students may enroll in 4th, 5th, 6th or 7th grades for an abbreviated term. The student’s contributions are matched annually by the Fellow’s congregation. Additionally, the Charleston Jewish Federation will match funds contributed by the students at a rate of $2 for every $1. This 2 for 1 match is subject to available funds after the fourth year of the program. At the end of a 7 year enrollment, a Fellow who has made a maximum contribution of $200 would have $5,600 available for an approved Israel Program to use anytime between the end of 7th grade through 22 years of age.

Who is eligible? Students whose family makes a minimum contribution of $200 to the Charleston Jewish Federation’s Annual Campaign the first year of enrollment in the program, and at least $100 to the Campaign each succeeding year, and whose families are members “in good standing” of participating congregations may enroll. For the maximum, or full enrollment of seven years, children should enroll in 3rd grade. Students may alternately choose to enroll in 4th, 5th, 6th or 7th grade for an abbreviated term.

How do I sign up? Register for the Israel Education Fellowship Program online at www.jewishcharleston.org. To find out more about eligibility and registration, contact Sarah Swingle, CJF Program Director, at 571.6565 x 304, or at sarahs@jewishcharleston.org. Deadline for this year is October 31, 2011.

What’s the best part of this new program?

We hope that the Jewish Community food pantry will engage our entire Jewish community in the fight against hunger. By only asking for a five dollar commitment, we hope that this program will be inclusive and extend across many boundaries uniting us in our communal response to hunger. It reflects our commitment to the Jewish values of justice, repairing of the world and to serving community members in need with respect. What inspired you to step up and lead this initiative?

We were talking about it at a Jewish Community Relations Committee (JCRC) meeting and it just seemed like a very good idea. Our Jewish Social Services are financially strained and I hate the thought of people going hungry or eating unhealthy diets due to monetary concerns. In difficult economic times, many individuals have to do without things that many of us take for granted.

Commitment to Community: Becoming a Lion of Judah The Charleston Jewish community is fortunate to have many amazing women as active volunteers and role models in our community, and Roxann Spandorfer is one of those women. Earlier this year, Roxann took the generous challenge of Anita Zucker, one of our community’s most amazing women, and became a Lion of Judah. Roxann, originally from Greensboro, North Carolina, is a graduate of the University of Georgia Pharmacy School. She practiced pharmacy for nearly 10 years before moving to Charleston from Atlanta in

1998 with her husband Michael. The couple has two wonderful children: Adam, 18, and Jake, 16. Having given to the Federation’s Annual Campaign since moving here, Roxann was familiar with the CJF and how it supports Jews locally, in Israel and around the world. When asked what inspired her to give a leadership gift of a Lion of Judah this year, Roxann shared that “after many conversations with different people, I felt I needed to step up and really commit to our community. Looking into and thinking about becoming a Lion, I came across things

that I saw were so important to me. Being a Lion is a symbol of today’s Jewish women’s strength, a symbol of caring about the Jewish world we live in. This program brings together Jewish women of all ages and walks of life, in order to play an essential role in creating social justice, healing the sick, feeding the hungry, preserving human dignity and building Jewish identity. Most importantly, Anita Zucker’s pledge to help those who choose to become a Lion made it possible for me to wear a Lion pin – a symbol of passion and commitment.” And passion she has. When asked what she is most passionate about, Roxann responded, “Whether it’s teaching someone to read or putting a can of food in a collection bin, being a part of helping is my passion. The only way to make a difference in the world is by doing.” Roxann is indeed making a difference in the world through her gift to the CJF’s Annual Campaign, and

Anita Zucker’s Lion of Judah Challenge • The first year, you contribute $2,500 to the Charleston Jewish Federation Annual Campaign, and Anita will match your gift with $2,500, making you a Lion of Judah. • The second year, you contribute $4,000 to the Annual Campaign, and Anita will supplement the gift with $1,000, again making you a Lion’s of Judah.

she recognizes that: “Giving to the CJF Annual Campaign helps provide so much support for our Jewish community; it is my duty to give. For me, Judaism is not

only a religion; it is my familyhood.” Thank you, Roxann, for your commitment to your Jewish family all over the world.

• The third year, you contribute the full $5,000 gift, which is a leadership gift of a Lion of Judah, and which will make a huge impact for our Jewish community locally, in Israel and around the world. There are still 4 Lion of Judah Challenges available. Call today, 843.571.6565.

Benefits Establishes a lasting legacy in your name Provides future resources for organizations that are important to you Structured to best meet your financial and charitable goals Offers tax benefits for you and/or your estate Perpetual Annual Campaign Endowment (PACE) continues your gift to the Federation beyond your lifetime. Through the Jewish Endowment Fund, a PACE gift acknowledges your lifelong involvement with our community. Your name lives on and serves as a reminder to your family and friends of the Jewish values you hold dear. Each year, your fund will provide an annual gift to the Federation in your name to help when and where it is most needed.

You can create a Perpetual Annual Campaign Endowment or Lion of Judah Endowment during your lifetime. Once established, you choose the best way and time to fund your endowment. It can be now or in the future. This allows you and your family to receive the maximum personal and financial benefits that best fit your situation.

Let your tzedakah work for you and your community. Lion of Judah Endowment (LOJE) is the endowment component of the Women’s Philanthropy Lion of Judah Program. It recognizes that Jewish women have always been at the forefront in setting standards for philanthropic giving. Every woman with an annual campaign gift of $5,000 or more is eligible to establish a LOJE. The LOJE, named for the donor, requires a minimum funding level of $100,000. This ensures the continuation of the donor’s Lion of Judah annual campaign gift.

A PACE or LOJE can be created through a bequest, a gift of life insurance, a charitable gift annuity or other charitable options that meet your needs. Your financial advisor or estate planner can help you determine what works best for you. The staff at the Charleston Jewish Federation is also available to answer your questions. Call 843.571.6565 for more information.

Every Lion of Judah creating a LOJE is recognized with the addition of the prestigious Or L’Atid or Light unto the Future, a flame added to their Lion of Judah pin. This flame is a public affirmation to their children and community of her generous spirit and commitment to future generations.

[ letters from our jcc program directors ] Ronneca Watkins JCC Assistant Executive Director

Shalom Ya’ll! WOW-what a summer our JCC campus had this year! I STILL can’t believe how fast the time went by but you know what they say, time flies when you’re having fun! First, I want to congratulate Tamar Sternfeld, Makala Boscowski, Alexis Bailey, and Mindy Hawkins on an incredible job with Camp Baker. Camp Baker was all about offering high quality programming while keeping our campers safe and HAPPY. Everyday I was encouraged to see counselors ready to go and campers excited to tell me about their adventures. If you missed out on camp this summer, I strongly encourage you to check out ‘J’ Care and our great Children’s Programming this fall as I know that JCC is definitely going to be the place to be. The JCC hosted another successful City Wide Swim Meet in partnership with CCAA in July. I’m so proud of the leadership that Coach Brittany Fieldson and Coach Moshe Bielsky displayed as they coached and led the JCC Starfish to a victory for their last meet of the season. For the first time in several years we had a great showing at City-Wide with eligible swimmers. I hope that you will join us at the JCC on Sunday, September 4 at 7pm for the JCC Fantasy Island Party. Phyllis Katzen and Sandra Perlitz are heading up this event and this is a party you don’t want to miss!

Lauren Dumas JCC Sports, Wellness & Aquatics Director

I cannot believe Summer is almost over! And what a summer we had here at the JCC. Camp Baker was SO much fun and all the campers had a blast learning and perfecting their swimming skills in the Pearlstine pool. If you haven’t signed your child up for swimming lessons, you still have time to do so, as the pool does not close until Labor Day. Please visit our website for more information. It’s also time to start thinking about Fall sports for your child! We are offering soccer, tennis lessons, basketball clinics and volleyball clinics. Stop by the JCC today or call me for more information! Our zumba classes are a big hit. Take advantage of zumba in the water while the pool is still open- through September but always remember we offer “land” zumba year round with two instructors.

Louise Petkov JCC Senior Director

What is it that determines how we treat our Senior members here at the JCC? Is it a reflection of our cultural heritage or is it a reflection of the American attitude? In the past, our elders were considered valuable community members to be consulted, respected, held in high esteem and encouraged to contribute to the household and community at large. This gave their lives meaning and MADE them useful. As they aged, elders were kept in the home. Children knew their grandparents. These children learned valuable lessons about life, aging and death from watching the process directly. Today the word “Senior” doesn’t imply wisdom or worth, it describes an old person who qualifies for discounts. “Senior” too often infers nonproductive, a burden or a person to be politely patronized. Many are not regarded enough to be integrated into a family unit. They live alone, never knowing their grandchildren. When they become too much of a burden, they are encouraged to move to the human warehouse for the “good of all”. They comply out of guilt. Out of sight, out of mind. If you are thinking “What’s wrong with this?”- THINK again. We can do better than this with our Elder members at the JCC! They are a valuable resource that are cherished, encouraged to interact and to be involved. All of them have a lot to give. Some of them need a little help. This what the JCC community is about - supporting one another throughout all the stages of our lives spiritually, emotionally, physically, financially? What does the JCC offer to support their Elders? If you have a talent - share it, if you have love - offer comfort, if you have resources –give. YOU can find a way to touch the life of an Elder.

B. Jay Novit JCC Membership Director

Tamar Sternfeld JCC Youth, Family & Camp Director

“There are big ships and small ships. But the best ship of all is friendship.”

What a great summer we had at Camp! New friendships, laughter, and memories that will last a lifetime all happened this summer at Camp Baker! Did you miss out on the fun? Want your Camp experience to last a little bit longer? Post Camp is happening from August 8-19th! Join in the fun! Call me today at 843.571.6565 x 307 to join in. There are still a few spaces available.

Babysitting is coming to the Charleston JCC! Starting Sept. 5, we will be offering Babysitting from 8 am-12 pm and again from 6pm -8pm, Monday-Thursday and from 9 am-1 pm on Sundays. For more information, contact me at 843-571-6565 x307 or tamars@charlestonjcc.org

the youth group, but for the younger members of our congregation. We meet regularly just for fun and have regular Shul-In’s, too. CHARLEY is not only active at home. We also enjoy spending time with our friends at Regional Kallot and NFTY National Convention. We worship, sing and play together; work, learn and grow together. Time spent with our friends in other communities is precious to us. We sent 21 teens to Charlotte for the Spring Kallah in April and in February, hosted over 40 teens at James Island County Park for our Shabbaton Survivor: Members of the Tribe. Most of all, CHARLEY cares about the community in which we live. Every year, we coordinate, promote and implement a congregational food drive during the High Holidays. Last year we delivered over 2000 pounds of food to the Lowcountry Food Bank. Reaching out is a priority. We sing at area Senior Centers and have made friends with area church youth groups; specifically Christ Our King Catholic Church, Circular Congregational Church, and Bethany Methodist Church. On these occasions we all arrive at a greater understanding of each other’s beliefs and challenges. Many of CHARLEY’s activities are made possible by the generous contributions of our congregation; specifically the Danielle, Julie and Stephen Ziff KKBE Youth Education Fund. We are fortunate to have such resources and visionary supporters. Look forward to some serious fun. As our membership grows, so do our challenges and our successes. We’ll begin our year in August when we’re inviting ALL the Jewish teens (8th-12th grade) in Charleston to our annual musical shabbaton: Rhinofest. It’s a time for friendship, fun and worshipping together. For more information on this and all of our programming, we hope you’ll visit our website: www.mycharley.com. We can’t wait to see you!

Tips for a Successful School Year As the new school year approaches, no matter the age of our children, we worry about their success. Who will Liz’s teachers be? How can I help Sara’s grades improve in spelling or math? Will Ted have good friends? During these wonderfully warm and relaxing days, there is much we can do and plan to support our children’s success in the year to come. Here are a few tips to help guarantee a successful school year. 1. READ:

Whether you are reading to your children or they are reading independently, reading is the single best way to improve all areas of academics. Talk about the books or articles you are reading—parents are the role models for their children in all that they do, including reading. 2. TIMELINESS:

Create an organization each morning that works for your family so that you can get to school on time. The few minutes each morning that give children time to greet their friends and teachers, say goodbye to parents, and give themselves moments to think about the day ahead become more crucial as students become independent and academics more complex.

Follow Mrs. Weintrob’s blog at headofschoolblog.wordpress.com

3. POSITIVE VIBES:

Our children can tell when we are anxious. When we greet them at the end of the school day or after work with a worried look, we are nonverbally asking, “What went wrong today?” Affirming our children’s strengths and possibilities will help them continue to persevere, even when the going is challenging now or in the future. 4. PRAISE:

Give your children positive reinforcement for their hard work, not for the grades or prizes they receive. We may not always win first place or receive an A, but taking the queue from many successful individuals, determination is key: “The harder I work, the luckier I get.” [Samuel Goldwyn] 5. RESPONSIBILITY:

Give your children responsibilities at home. Chores such as setting the table, cleaning up their toys, or as they mature, jobs such as babysitting, mowing the lawn or helping at a community activity help children feel that they contribute to the family or community. Working with others helps social interactions, trying out new skills and self-esteem. 6. GOALS:

What are your goals for your child? At one coffee that I gave this year, I asked parents of young children this very question. Almost

all stated they wanted their children to be good and responsible people, filled with compassion for others. As challenges and concerns crop up during the year, come back to this goal. Did the science fair project I did for my son really help him learn responsibility? Did my request not to have my daughter interact with another student give her compassion for another? Did speaking against my daughter’s teacher in front of her make me a good role model? Show her how I avoid Lashon HaRah (gossip). Going back to our goals puts the day-today events into perspective. 7. LISTEN:

Whether on a walk, drying the dishes or riding in the car, unstructured moments are often the best for your children to share what is on their minds. Before jumping to

share, direct or criticize, listening sets up the lines of communication for the future, helps children try out ideas and let us learn more about our children. 8. ENJOY:

Our children grow up quickly. What may seem irritating when 2 or 4 or 14, becomes simply part of growing up, often fading away. While we don’t want to ignore serious concerns [and should consult appropriate professionals for help if truly concerned], we want to enjoy each stage of our children’s growth. Laugh at the silly jokes of your 6 year old, listen to your 12 year old’s favorite music and you may be lucky enough when your children are 30 or 40, to continue to enjoy a warm and close relationship with them.

NCSY’s Southern Region Relaunches NCSY Chapter in Charleston, SC This coming fall, NCSY Southern is relaunching one of the oldest NCSY chapters in the county, Charleston, SC. Jason Daniels will serve as the new Chapter Advisor and will be responsible for coordinating local programming and recruiting participants for regional conventions and international summer programs. NCSY Southern offers many highly successful informal Jewish educational programs. Bringing NCSY back into Charleston will allow high school teens to stay connected to their spiritual roots. NCSY is the international youth movement of the Orthodox Union. Todd Cohn, Regional Director of Southern NCSY, declared, “We are very excited about Jason’s arrival. His background, experience, and tremendous enthusiasm and creativity are the perfect combination for an informal educator. It is truly a great time to be in Charleston.” Jason grew up in Commack, NY, a community on Long Island, where he attended his local public school.

He was very active in youth organizations and after attending college, proceeded to study in Israel. In Israel, Jason developed a passion for working with teens and connecting them to God. Together with his wife, Amber, and daughter, Baila, Jason has recently moved back to America and taken on the role of Chapter Advisor for Charleston while simultaneously running a company he started in 2010. “We are thrilled to be given the opportunity to bring NCSY to Charleston and we are so excited to get started” says Jason. “We hope to create an environment that fosters each teen’s personal growth with the goal of exploring and enlivening his or her Jewish identity.” “NCSY is very grateful to Rabbi Ari Sytner, Rabbi of Brith Sholom Beth Israel (BSBI) in Charleston, for working so hard to make sure that Charleston’s youth get the very best that NCSY has to offer,” says Todd Cohn. For more information or to contact Jason Daniels, e-mail jason@eyecarepro.net or call 516-532-5311.

News Jewish Studies Major Initiated at the College of Charleston In the spring of 2011, the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education approved the College of Charleston’s application for a baccalaureate program in Jewish Studies. Beginning this fall, we are offering South Carolina’s first and only Jewish Studies major, and one of only a handful in the Southeast. The Jewish Studies program has offered a minor since 1990 and has steadily grown in recent years—quadrupling the number of enrolled students since 2006. In 2010-11 there were nearly 500 students in 17 sections of Jewish Studies courses. The goal of the Jewish Studies major is to enable students to understand the diversity and complexity of the Jewish experience. Students will acquire a sophisticated understanding of the historical, religious, philosophical, literar y, sociological, and linguistic components that constitute the Jewish experience, as well as an armory of interpretative and analytical skills that can be applied within and across a broad range of disciplines. The program includes the Zucker/Goldberg Center for Holocaust Studies, and each year hosts a distinguished faculty member to occupy the Norman and Gerry Sue Arnold Visiting Chair. This semester Professor Allan Nadler of Drew University will be the Distinguished Visiting Chair in Jewish Studies.
