Pugilists The era was the 1940s and 1950s. The glory days of boxing. When toughness was a given. When nobody backed down from nothin’. These were the times when the State of Israel was forming its independence. There were 14 Golden Glove clubs in Charleston back then. There were some great fighters in those days. They were really tough guys. They would knock your head off if you didn’t know what you were doing. But almost everybody back then knew what they were doing. There were high school and college boxing teams. Amateur boxing was huge. It was a cultural phenomenon. Some of the old boxers are still around but not many. When they are gone, we will wonder what those old black and white photos of young men who fought with their fists were all about. Because nobody fights much anymore. The sport once called “sweet science” has become a sideshow in today’s sports world. These World War II vets fought the Nazis, the Japanese, each other and anybody else foolish enough to climb into the ring. They were heroes of their day, legends in their time, but now it’s all fading away. Two of the great fighters in those days were Danny Berlinsky and my father Marvin “Bud” Buncher. My father was a Golden Gloves boxer in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania while he attended high school and during his enlistment in the Air Force during World War II. It just seems like yesterday when I remember my father telling me stories about his high school life in Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania. This was a middle class town which, unfortunately, was laced with anti-Semitism. The Golden Gloves and fisticuffs that came with the anti-Semitism led to my father having to move in with his grandparents in Squirrel Hill, the Jewish section of Pittsburgh. The ethos in those days was quite clear. Whenever the Six-Day War began, my father was ready to leave to go to fight for Israel. Danny Berlinsky experienced similar circumstances in Charleston. They were part of the strength of early Zionism. The counterpart to our pugilists in the United States are Ariel Sharon and his colleagues who personify Israel’s unyielding drive for security. He revolutionized Israeli defense forces and established Anti-terror Commander Unit 101. His leadership during the Six-Day and Yom Kippur Wars made him a national hero and propelled him into the political arena.

CREATIVE DIRECTOR:

We are privileged to have our friends Nico Berlin and Eli Hyman who both volunteered and fought with the IDF.

Today’s era is your opportunity for days of glory and being tough. The State of Israel, the bastion for Jews all over the world, must be strong and fortified by our financial support to resist and overcome any threat or obstacle.

CHARLESTON JEWISH VOICE

How does this all fit in today’s world of Israel? The transition of the fighting spirit shifted from fisticuffs to financial support of Israel by the Diaspora.

Join the rank of our great pugilists - never let Israel go down for the count and answer the bell from generation to generation.

The honorees of the most recent Israel Bond function were Danny and Ruth Berlinsky. Their support of Israel through words, deeds, purchasing of Israeli bonds and

CJF REMEMBER Program KEYNOTE YOM HASHOAH SPEAKER: COMMEMORATES MASSACRES IN ROMANIA

500,000

The tragedy of Romanian Jews who perished during the Holocaust is one of the most neglected chapters of the Holocaust. At our annual Yom Hashoah commemoration on April 22, 2012, 3 p.m. at KKBE, our keynote speaker, Dr. Felicia Carmelly, will describe the brutal experiences of Jews in Romania and the territory of Transnistria, the military administration that was set up in 1941. Dr. Carmelly is a psychotherapist, educator, author, lecturer, and consultant in human relations. She has a Master’s Degree from McGill University, Canada, and a PhD. degree from Columbia Pacific University, United States. She is also the founder and former president of the Transnistria Survivors’ Association in Toronto. Her most challenging and rewarding projects to date were interviewing Holocaust survivors for the Seven Spielberg Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation, and preparing her acclaimed anthology “’Shattered! 50 Years of Silence, History and Voices from Romania and Transnistria”. Dr. Carmelly dedicated these memoirs to the members of her family, especially to her beloved parents Isaac and Laura Steigmann. They survived Transnistria, but their lives were forever branded by the horrors they experienced.

SAVE THE DATE IN ADDITION TO SPEAKING AT OUR COMMUNITY-WIDE YOM HASHOAH COMMEMORATION, DR. CARMELLY WILL SPEAK FURTHER ABOUT HER EXPERIENCES AND LEAD A DISCUSSION ON MONDAY, APRIL 23, 7 P.M. AT THE JCC.

CYNTHIA STETZER

The Charleston Jewish Federation is joining the Charleston YWCA in its mission to eradicate barriers to diversity by participating in the YWCA’s annual “Stand Against Racism” event being held Friday, April 27, 2012. This year’s event will be one to remember and one in which you will want to be a participant! We encourage all Jewish community members to come and take a stand against racism with us. On April 27 the YWCA is planning a very exciting public awareness program by forming two human links. One will form on East Bay Street and the second on Meeting St. Both will be near the Ravenel Bridge. The event will start at 4:30 p.m. with Mayor Joseph Riley of Charleston kicking off the program. At 6:00 p.m. we will move to St. Julian Devine Community Center for refreshments and entertainment. Details as to the assembly area and the early evening program will be forthcoming. Check out the “Your Charleston Jewish Federation Connection” weekly emails for more details soon (to sign up for this email newsletter, email sarahs@ jewishcharleston.org). This year’s event is the third annual Stand Against Racism program, but the first in which we will form human links. We expect it to be an exciting one! Participation has been growing each year and we are hoping this year will have an even greater attendance than previous ones. Your support is essential to making it a success.

CJF Social Services

Make

Glean the New Green

The Charleston Jewish Community Kosher Food Pantry, run by your Charleston Jewish Federation’s Jewish Social Services, invites you to make glean the new green! WHAT IS GLEANING? Gleaning has its roots in Biblical times when the corners of farmers’ fields were left unharvested and overlooked or forgotten crops were ‘gleaned’ as sustenance for the poor, the hungry, the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow. Gleaning is as important today as it was in ancient times. This early form of welfare is now a humanitarian act of the modern world.

VOLUNTEER TO GLEAN! Volunteer to glean fields and fill the shelves of the Charleston Jewish Community Kosher Food Pantry with fresh and nutritious produce. The Food Pantry needs your help to fight hunger and build a healthy and nourished Charleston. Contact food pantry volunteer Jacki Baer to volunteer today at gleaning4kfp@gmail.com! GLEAN NOT YOUR SCENE? You can volunteer at the actual pantry or donate. Visit www.jewishcharleston.org/foodpantry.aspx.

Thank you to wonderful Kosher Food Pantry volunteers Carole Addlestone, Neda Nussbaum, and Linda Chavis for delivering food basket centerpieces for our first bar mitzvah on Saturday, March 17! Maxim Fisher, as part of his bar mitzvah project, raised funds to rent the food baskets as centerpieces and bimah décor. The money from the rental goes directly to feed the hungry. Thank you, Maxim!

RSVP Please contact Sarah Swingle at 843.571.6565 or sarahs@jewishcharleston.org.

Meatless Monday is an international campaign that encourages people to not eat meat on Mondays to improve their health and the health of the planet. WANT TO HELP HUNGER ON A GLOBAL SCALE? There is more than enough food in the world to feed the entire human population. So why are more than a billion people still going hungry? Huge amounts of grain, soybeans, and corn are funneled through all the animals we use for food instead of directly feeding hungry people. Harvard nutritionist Jean Mayer estimates that reducing meat production by just 10 percent in the U.S. would free enough grain to feed 60 million people.

If we all cut down on our meat consumption just one day a week, we can make a big difference in global hunger, our own health and the environment! TRY A NEW RECIPE THIS MONDAY: SOUTHWESTERN BLACK BEAN CASSEROLE 1 cup water 1 cup corn meal chili powder to taste cumin to taste salt & pepper 1 cup black beans 1 cup corn 1/2 package vegetarian burger-style crumbles 1 jar salsa

DIRECTIONS: In a medium sauce pan, combine corn meal and water. Add a generous amount of chili powder, cumin, and salt and pepper to taste. Cook over medium heat until the mixture gets thick. Pat mixture into the bottom of a baking pan and bake at 400 degrees for approximately 10 minutes to make crust. Combine black beans, corn and veggie crumbles, and pour over crust. Charleston F ilm Festival Your Charleston Jewish Federation was a proud sponsor of quality Jewish films at the 3rd Annual Charleston Film Festival at the Terrace Theater March 1-4. The featured films included “Follow Me: The Yoni Netanyahu Story,” an incredible movie that takes its audience on a journey into the young hero’s mind. Director Ari Pinchot, son-in-law of Barbara and Rabbi David Radinsky, spoke about the film, which opened the NY Jewish Film Festival, to a packed house on opening night. Many, many Jewish community members were in attendance for the opening party and the screening. Other Jewish movies shown were "Jewish Soldiers in Blue & Gray," a civil war documentary filmed in and around Charleston, and "A Matter of Size," a sweetly absurd Israeli comedy about people using sumo wrestling to combat their weight. PAUL BROWN, OWNER OF THE TERRACE, SENT US THE FOLLOWING: Thank you, CJF, for being such a major contributor to the success of the 3rd Annual Charleston Film Festival. “Violins of

Hope”

Brings Holocaust Violins to Charlotte, N.C. for the American Premiere MEG FREEMAN WHALEN

“Wondrous, my child, is the transformation of anguish.” Yiddish poet Abraham Sutzkever presents this testament to redemption more than once in a book of poetry called The Fiddle Rose. In Sutzkever’s poems, words of suffering are transformed into words of healing. “Wondrous transformation” is likewise the story of the “Violins of Hope,” a collection of violins recovered from the Holocaust and painstakingly restored by the master Israeli violinmaker, Amnon Weinstein. The son of a violinist/violinmaker who fled Vilna, Lithuania for Palestine in the years before the Holocaust, Amnon Weinstein never met his Lithuanian relatives. Knowing that, like his family, many Jewish musicians and their instruments had been silenced by Nazi brutality, he began a quest two decades ago to find and repair violins from the Holocaust. In 1996, he discovered the first, and now nearly 30 instruments have found their way into Weinstein’s shop in Tel Aviv. Some he discovered at flea markets; some were brought to him by acquaintances or family members of the musicians who had owned them. Many of the violins were so damaged from being played outside in rain and sun and snow, that it often took him more than a year to bring each to playing condition. One was filled with ashes. In April 2012, UNC Charlotte will bring 18 of the Violins of Hope to Charlotte, N.C. First played in Jerusalem in 2008 and never before exhibited and played together in North or South America, the violins have extraordinary histories of suffering and survival. Some were played in concentration camps, while others belonged to the Klezmer musical tradition that was nearly destroyed in the Holocaust. Presented by the College of Arts + Architecture, in partnership with nearly 20 academic and cultural institutions, the Violins of Hope will be exhibited in the new UNC Charlotte Center City Building Gallery April 9-24. An international array of professional musicians will give voice to these extraordinary instruments in a series of five performances, culminating on April 21 in a concert with the Charlotte Symphony featuring renowned soloist Shlomo Mintz. Related programs, from film screenings to lectures, will explore the history of music in the face of oppression. YAD Run with Emanu-El On Sunday, March 18, 2012, Synagogue Emanu-El and YAD’s young families committee collaborated to create a run/walk with a Jewish twist. The morning started with an outdoor minyan, led by Rabbi Adam Rosenbaum, at the Mt. Pleasant Memorial Waterfront Park. After that, everyone started walking towards the Cooper Bridge, for a 5k route with one of the best views around town. The day ended with some post-run stretches and a potluck dairy picnic.

PURIM STREET FAIR 5772 IN REVIEW RABBI BENI KROHN

“This was the best play-date ever!” exclaimed Harry Goldberg, 4, of James Island. Harry’s enthusiasm expresses the sentiment of the over 250 community members, from all walks of life, who streamed into the Jewish Community Center for the Community Purim Street Fair on March 4.

The event, which was cosponsored by the Charleston JCC, Addlestone Hebrew Academy, JROC, Synagogue Emanu-El, Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim, and the PJ Library, included activities for children of all ages. Jump castles, carnival

some of the exciting goings-on. The true show-stopper, however, was the Project Purim Runway Show. Dozens of children from ages 18 months to 12 years strutted

Buzz Lightyear, these kids brought it all. The food was excellent as well, and all at an affordable price! What a great way to spend time with our children.

One grandparent was so enamored with the event, she sent the following note in appreciation: “This is the first time I have had a little one to bring to the Center for the Purim Carnival. On Sunday, my grandson and I made the trip to the JCC from Sullivan’s Island to have a Purim outing. The day was magical…Thank you and your staff for making the trip to the Charleston JCC worth the trip over the bridge.” I guess Harry was right. This was the best ever, and plans are already in the works for next year. Thank you to all of you who made this event such an overwhelming success!

Shabbat in a Box

Born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, Recht developed a strong Jewish identity attending Traditional Congregation, a conservative synagogue. In high school, Recht joined NFTY, where he was deeply influenced by Jewish music. After graduating USC (Los Angeles, CA) and Music Institute (Hollywood, CA), Recht hit the road touring nationwide from LA to New York playing at clubs, colleges, and amphitheaters. Recht has shared the stage with national acts such as the Guess Who, Chris Rock, America, Supertramp, Three Dog Night, the Samples, Vertical Horizon, Government Mule (Allman Brothers), and many more. After releasing two critically acclaimed secular albums, Good Thing and Reality, Recht returned to his Jewish roots with his debut Jewish album, Tov, in the summer of 1999. His shift to Jewish music marks the birth of a unique blend of pop, radio-friendly music with Hebrew, Jewish text, and social responsibility. Recht is the Artistin-Residence at United Hebrew Congregation in St. Louis, Missouri and enjoys spending time with his wife, Elisa, 10-year-old son, Kobi, and 7-year-old son, Tal.

Defiance Film Family Launches New Security Initiative for Jewish Centers Overseas

Children and Grandchildren of the “Bielski Brothers” Work to Secure Iranian Terror Targets New York, N.Y. - March 8, 2012- The Bielski family, descendants of the renowned Jewish partisans responsible for saving hundreds of lives during the Holocaust and subjects of the 2008 feature film Defiance, today announced the launch of the Jewish Safe Haven Fund, a new security initiative for Jewish community centers overseas. JSHF will focus on identifying centers that are at risk, install “safe rooms”, surveillance and other security equipment and provide self-defense and emergency protocol training. “There is a real and deadly threat against hundreds of these centers across the globe,” said Jay Bielski, son of Zus Bielski and President of JSHF. “The centers should provide a safe haven for cultural and religious observances, but currently they are not equipped to deal with any real dangers. Our goal is to secure these important centers of Jewish life so that they are safe for the local communities and for those traveling abroad.” The announcement of the new not-for-profit organization comes shortly after the February 14th security alert issued by the Anti-Defamation League recommending “increased vigilance” by Jewish institutions in the wake of attempted bombings allegedly targeting Jews overseas. The assassination attempt of an Israeli diplomat in India, as well as thwarted attacks in Thailand, Georgia, and Azerbaijan has contributed to rising concerns. Events like

2008’s attack on the Chabad – Lubavitch center in Mumbai where five people, including the center’s directors, Rabbi Gavriel and Rivkah Holtzberg were murdered are fresh on everyone’s minds. “We were unable to provide a security solution ourselves,” said Rabbi Chanoch Gechtman, current director of the Mumbai Chabad center. The Jewish Safe Haven Fund will give us the opportunity to further increase our presence here, along with maintaining the safety of thousands of Jews who are here during the year. With security equipment and training, our center will be a much safer place.” The Jewish Safe Haven Fund aims to fully equip Jewish centers overseas with the proper surveillance and security gear needed to maintain a safe environment. In addition, self defense and emergency training will be provided for center directors and staff. Donations and requests for security assistance can be made through the JSHF website at JewishSafeHavenFund.org. About JSHF Founded in 2012 by the Bielski and Meissner families to address rising safety concerns at Jewish community centers abroad, the Jewish Safe Haven Fund aims to increase security at at-risk locations. About the Bielski Family Known for the heroic actions during WWII, the Bielski brothers were responsible for saving over 1250 Jews from extermination. The story of the partisans’ two years living in the forest is the subject of the acclaimed 2008 feature film Defiance, directed by Edward Zwick. The children and grandchildren of the Bielski brothers have continued the family tradition by saving lives as part of the US Marines and the Israel Defense Forces.

When Religion Becomes Lethal The Christian-Jewish Council of Greater Charleston is leading in the organization of a series of programs featuring Charles Kimball. Religious values have inspired violence – September 11th, the continuing chaos in the Middle East, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and the Strait of Hormuz. These events are presenting new challenges to peace, stability, economic vitality, personal safety and freedom. Faith-based violence also occurs in Christian and Jewish cultures – abortion clinic violence and the assassination of Prime Minister Rabin are examples. Dr. Charles Kimball is Presidential Professor and Director of Religious Studies at the University of Oklahoma. He served as Chair of the Department of Religion and Prof. of World Religions in the Divinity School at Wake Forest University (1996-2008). Dr. Kimball is the author of When Religion Becomes Evil: Five Warning Signs (rev. ed. 2008) and its sequel, When Religion Becomes Lethal: The Explosive Mix of Politics and Religion in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam (2011). His first book was named a Top 10 book by the Assoc. of Parish Clergy and one of the Top 15 Books on Religion by Publisher’s Weekly. Dr. Kimball graduated Oklahoma State University, is an ordained Baptist minister, holds a MDiv degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and a Harvard ThD specializing in Islamic studies. He has written many articles, featured in 700+ media interviews, presented at White House,

State & Defense Departments. Join us in celebrating this simcha at this semester’s Three Rabbi Panel. Our community’s spiritual leaders will discuss Jewish obligations and the ethics of procreation, contraception, and abortion on a planet with over 7 billion human inhabitants. topics will include the “duty” to procreate, views on abortion and genetic testing, and the centrality of the traditional family for Jewish communal life. Our Community AHA

Pesach, Israel, Day Schools and the Jewish Future Passover is the holiday most celebrated by Jews around the world. Memories are interlaced with smells of charoset, wine, matzah and fragrant spices of special family menus. Cool air brushes our cheeks as we open the door for Eijah, anticipating just for a moment, the announcement of the coming of the Messiah. Traditions are diverse around the Jewish world—and whether you eat charoset flavored with a recipe from Germany, Poland, Morocco, Persia or Charleston, we all celebrate a holiday that is at the core of Jewish history and values: the liberation of Jews from slavery in order to become a people accepting the first universal code of morality. While 40 years were necessary before the Jews entered the Promised Land, the journey parallels our lives, moving from our own Mitzraim (Egypt), to life’s wilderness journeys and, if we are very lucky, to enter the Promised Land, our own homeland flowing with milk and honey. On April 17, our 8th grade students have the privilege of traveling to Israel as a culmination of their Jewish education at Addlestone. Walking the paths that Abraham did, viewing the buildings from the City of David, buying food in the famous open market of Machaneh Yehudah in Jerusalem to hiking up to Masada and in the Golan, our students will breath in the air of Israel. They will also meet 8th grade students from the Rigler School in Netanya, a public school from 6-12th grades, which is our new sister school. Already having created their own power point page introducing themselves, our students will have the opportunity to speak with students their own age, share common experiences and create a bond with a few real Israelis. Day Schools experience is the single best method of keeping Jewish children Jewish. Studies over the last 20 years have demonstrated this clearly. We know that Addlestone is the cornerstone of the Charleston Jewish community. So many of our community leaders have stated what we who are parents or educators at Addlestone already know: Addlestone is the key to the future of the Charleston Jewish community. Addlestone gives our students a superb basis for high school and college, as our alumni and their high school teachers tell us. But more than the 3 R’s are the building of character and leadership that help develop active citizens who are compassionate and proactive, who are steeped in the moral values of tikkun olam, repair of the world, values that make us proud to be part of the Jewish people.

Brith Sholom Beth Israel

March has been another exciting month at Brith Sholom Beth Israel. We started on the very first day of March with our annual Chevra Kadisha dinner, which honors the volunteers who perform this important mitzvah. The Bakers once again served their famous brisket, which is always a hit. Then, it was on to Purim where Dr Jonathan Kirshtein read the megillah and continued a family tradition started by the patriarch of the Kirshtein family, Papa Abe. We adjourned downstairs for festivities and scrumptious homemade desserts prepared by our sisterhood. Denise Berry coordinated the traditional baking of the hamantashen and organized delivery of shaloch manot baskets all over town. A great job and much hard work by our sisterhood volunteers made an enjoyable Purim. The synagogue resonated with the ruach of back-to-back bar and bat mitzvahs. Mazel Tov to Miriam Kirshtein and Judah Ellison. Both are from families with deep roots in BSBI. We delighted in sharing in these simchas with them and their families. In between all that, the congregation was privileged to meet and visit with three rabbinic candidates who came to our community seeking to become the next rabbi of BSBI. These three exciting finalists were chosen from a large number of applicants by our Search Committee, which has invested many hours to find just the right rabbi to lead us into the future. We did not slow down in April either. We continued our traditional chometz fest right before Pesach and it gave us all the chance to eat and schmooze before the work of the holiday. Also, look for a Rosh Chodesh event coming soon. Yeshivah Night on Thursdays at the Minyan House continues to be our most popular class and is led by Rabbi Beni Krohn. If you prefer a weekday class try our lunch and learn on Wednesday afternoons at the synagogue. Rabbi Sytner serves up a thought provoking and interactive discussion and you get the best meal in town from our own Fay Grabin. All of the many reasons to come and check out the new BSBI and enjoy the activities and the food with friendly folks.

Celebrating Hadassah’s Centennial at our Southern-Style High Tea are (left to right) Sandra Schwartz, Sunny Steinberg and Marilyn Hoffman. Great hats! Great afternoon!

Congratulations to the newly elected Executive Board of the Charleston Chapter. These women will be installed at a family-fun Havdalah program on Saturday, May 12, 2012 at Black Magic Café on Folly Beach, starting at 7pm. Our new Board will serve from May 12, 2012 until December 31, 2013. Co-Presidents: Sandi Archambault and Sharon Hox Treasurer: Joann Sherman Recording Secretary: Ilene Turbow Corresponding Secretary: Jennifer Sasson Membership VP: Bonnie Silverberg Programming Co-VP’s: Ruth Oser and Terry Schuyler Historian: Dorothy Weiner As we are well into our Centennial Year celebrations we welcome everyone to join the party. Our Centennial High Tea on March 18th was decorous, indulgent, and fun. Thank you to Marilyn Hoffman for opening her home for us, and to everyone who made this a terrific event. We want to also thank everyone who brought or donated stuffed animals for our “100 for 100” campaign, and the Sunday school artists at KKBE and Emanu-El who decorated Get Well cards to accompany these toys to MUSC Children’s Hospital. Our BIG DONOR event will take place this fall. We are so proud to celebrate our landmark anniversary. Henrietta Szold surely would have recognized Purim 2012 as the end of an era. But as she famously said, “There is no ending that is not also a beginning.” And with this beginning comes a new invitation. All of Hadassah’s members, supporters and friends are invited to attend our Centennial Convention this coming October in Jerusalem. The central event will be the dedication of the Sarah Wetsman Davidson Hospital Tower. This state-of-the-art complex, our largest building project in more than 50 years, will raise Hadassah’s already high profile on the Israeli landscape. You can help Hadassah help the world. For information contact Sharon Hox at 971-6116.

On Wednesday, March 7, Purim was celebrated with a candle lit sit-down dinner for a standing room only crowd at the Renaissance in Mount Pleasant. Costumes of Queen Esther, cowboys and girls, Zorro, a gypsy, a cat, a scary ghost, etc. added to the fun as we listened to the reading of the Megilah, making lots of noise with mention of the villain, Haman. The Have Nots entertained with a hilarious Purim Improvisation, which had everyone in stitches. The laughter continued for over an hour as adult and children volunteers graced the stage in true Purim spirit. The story of Purim is written as The Scroll of Esther. It is tradition to listen to the story and reveal meanings that aid us in our spiritual growth. For example, though Haman had wealth, position and power, it wasn’t enough. It was his greed that ultimately brought him down. And how G-d’s hand even though hidden, as in the Purim story, is present in our day to day life. The sumptuous meal that followed included hors d’oeuvres, mixed green salad, home baked Challah rolls, stuffed baked chicken in Pastry dough, brisket, roasted fingerling potatoes, green beans, tri-color sorbet & Hamentaschen. The open bar was part of the holiday’s prescribed necessities. At 7:00 PM, on Thursday, March 15, Chabad presented

The Lynching of Leo Frank, a tragic story, scandal and miscarriage of justice. Steve Oney is the author of And The Dead Shall Rise. The book won the American Bar Association’s Silver Gavel Award for best work on the nation’s legal system and the National Jewish Book Award for history. Mr. Oney devoted 17 years of his life to producing this definitive book, and he came to some shocking conclusions. The events surrounding the 1913 murder of a young factory worker, Mary Phegan, and the subsequent lynching of her employer, Leo Frank, prompted the founding of the B’nai Brith Anti-Defamation League and a revival of the Ku Klux Klan. fascinating lecture was held in the ballroom of the Holiday Inn. Susie Fishbein made her second “sold out” presentation on Thursday, March 22. This year her demonstration was “Gourmet Passover Made Easy.” Our culinary chef’s hands-on cooking demonstration and tasting inspired our Passover planning and cooking. Susie is an internationally acclaimed Kosher cooking expert who facilitated our forming of a delicious, elegant and easy-toprepare Passover menu. The evening ended with a book signing of her Kosher By Design best selling series.

Elmire Raven, Director of My Sister’s House, Inc. attended our recent Board Meeting and talked about the mission of My Sister’s House. My Sister’s House is a nonprofit organization which provides services, programs, and resources to empower victims of domestic violence and their children to live free of abuse. This wonderful resource has served the low country for over 30 years and provides all manner of support, including an emergency shelter, a crisis line, victim advocacy,

support groups and therapeutic services. NCJW, Charleston Section, is committed to the fight against domestic violence and is considering how best to make a significant impact. Now is the time to get involved! Please call Sarah Finkelstein or me to join this important effort. If you want to be more involved or learn about what we are doing, feel free to come to the Board meetings or call any of the Board of Directors for more information.
