COMMUNITY NEWS

Working together to tackle graffiti crime

A new advice leaflet aimed at helping Worcester businesses tackle the problem of graffiti crime has been produced. It includes advice on how to prevent graffiti at business premises and what steps to take if it does happen. Advice included in the

leaflet includes using Student Launches City Centre Running Scheme to Get People Active fences, gates, locks Sam Payne came up with the idea and saw it through as part of his Sports Coaching Development and Coaching degree, managing to raise the £3,000 needed to get it off the ground. Although a popular parkrun exists at the Countryside Centre, near Nunnery Wood, Sam has devised and launched the first parkrun for the City centre.

and planting to make it harder for graffiti vandals to get access to a building; keeping a property neat and clean to discourage vandals; and to use protective coatings to stop graffiti being sprayed on.

The 21-year-old, whose parkrun is believed to be the first to be led by a student, hopes to increase levels of fitness and improve people’s health by making exercise easily accessible. “I would love to sit back in a few years and think Worcester is a more physically active place because of this,” said Sam, who has enlisted a group of volunteers to help him.

The leaflet advises that if a building does become the target of graffiti, the crime is reported to the police, pictures of the graffiti

are taken and gives tips on how to quickly clean or cover the graffiti. Councillor Lynn Denham, Vice Chair of Worcester City Council’s Communities Committee, said: “When graffiti vandalism happens at public buildings we can go straight in and remove it, but we don’t have those powers over private property. This leaflet is a great way of helping city businesses to tackle this sort of crime.” The leaflet is being distributed to city centre businesses by the Worcester BID.

St Richard’s Hospice is hosting its third annual Woo Fest, which promises to have something for everyone in the family. The festival, which will be held at The Drum and Monkey in Upton upon Severn, is aiming to raise money for the hospice’s many free programs and resources. Taking place on Saturday July 8th the festival will host a number of fun activities. There will be a children’s play area (arts and crafts, toys, competitions and hog roast and other hot food). There will also be live music, from acoustic to rock covers to blues to modern hits in a beautiful rural location. New to this year’s festival is the Lancaster bomber flypast and a second stage, for continuous entertainment and music. The festival begins at 12pm and the last act will end at 11 pm. Artists playing at this year’s festival include The GT’s, Arcadia Roots, Population 7, Come Together and

so many more. The event has been a popular family attraction the last two years and this year promises to be the best one yet. Event organizers are saying that they expect this year’s crowd to beat records and the increased number of performers from previous years will cater to all age groups and preferences. All early bird day tickets have sold out but there are still day tickets and early bird camping and day tickets still available. Day tickets are £20 and children under 14 are free. Camping is also available for the night before the event (Friday) and people who would like to camp are encouraged to contact Luke Simons at simonslj@icloud.com or 07789998839. Early bird tickets for camping are still available and cost £22. All proceeds from the festival go directly to St Richard’s Hospice, thanks to the kind sponsorship and support of talented musicians and local companies, making this an event not to be missed. So come out and enjoy great music, amazing food and fun activities all for a wonderful cause.

THE BIG REVEAL The redevelopment of Cathedral Plaza in Worcester is set to finally open its doors on Saturday July 29th, according to building developers. The Cathedral Plaza Shopping centre, which has been the subject of a £20 million transformation, will hold a grand opening event for the public – allowing people to shop and dine while admiring the new development. The new space will feature seven new restaurants, remodeled shop units, a gymnasium and a new public square in front of Worcester Cathedral. Construction on the redevelopment project started in November 2015 and since then the project has created 600 construction jobs and apprenticeship opportunities, with over 415 retail jobs to be created once the Cathedral Square opens its doors. Proponents of the new development say this is a major boost for the city’s economy.

Food vendors like Ask, All Bar One, Byron Hamburgers, Cosy Club, steakhouse Miller and Carter, Yo! Sushi, Jung Fu, Wilko and Starbucks have all been confirmed as venues in the new development. Fitness4less has also been confirmed as the new gym located on the site. The grand opening event will take place on July 29th and will have live cookery demonstrations by celebrity chef Lesley Waters, cocktail-making master classes with one of the Cathedral Square’s venues All Bar One, live entertainment, children’s workshops and an outdoor screening of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Fitness4less will offer class demonstrations free of cost. Exact time of the unveiling has not yet been released but will come available as the event draws closer.

Pershore has been associated with plums since as early as medieval times! Early in the 19th century the Pershore Yellow Egg Plum was found growing wild in Tiddesley Wood and by 1870 records show that over 900 tons of the fruit were being sent to market during harvest time. At the Pershore Flower Show in 1920, a poster advertising the event described it as “The Largest Plum Show on Earth” and over ninety years later the town is striving to recreate this spectacle. This spectacle will begin this year on the 2nd of July and continue throughout July with the main events happening in August. The whole town will be turning purple with everyone going plum crazy. VIEW WITH HUW - GRATITUDE LETTER about yourself, played a significant part in your well- being or made a difference to you, and who you’ve never thanked properly. This person could be a family member, a friend, a colleague, teacher or coach. Take some time to reflect on the things that this person has done to make you feel extremely grateful. Address the letter specifically to the person (e.g. ‘Dear…’) and directly address the person throughout the letter. Describe specific things that this person has done that made you grateful and the positive effects of his or her actions. Expressing gratitude to others can have a significant impact on well-being, yet we do not always express our gratitude to the people in our lives. Here is your opportunity to develop the skill of being grateful by writing a gratitude letter. Think of someone who’s made you feel good

If possible take your letter and read it out loud to the person to get the full benefit of experiencing the full range of benefits that goes with such an exercise. www.huwrichardscoaching.com 07939061822

FIVE WAYS TO KEEP YOUR HOME COOL IN THE SUMMER n such heat it’s important to know how to keep your home cool, without having to go out and splurge on an AC unit. Here are five ways to buffer your home from the heat without racking up your electric bill.

I

1

Keep your blinds closed. As simple as this may seem, researchers say that up to 30% of unwanted heat comes from your windows and utilizing shades, curtains and the like can lower indoor temperatures by up to six degrees.

2

Place an ice bowl in front of your fan. Trust us, this trick is magic. Simply fill a small mixing bowl with ice and position it at an angle in front of a large fan so that the air whips off the ice at an extra chilled, extra misty temperature

4

3

Heat-proof your bed. Go straight to the source and put a cool-inducing chilled pillow under your head while you sleep.

BBQ, BBQ, BBQ! It’s obvious but using your oven or stove in the summer will make your house hotter, so go outside and fire up that grill.

5

Swap your sheets. While textiles like flannel sheets and fleece blankets are fantastic for insulation, cotton is a smarter move this time of year as it breathes easier and stays cooler.

MASTER THE URBAN GARDEN

S

mall gardens can be difficult to design however they can provide the perfect opportunity to test creativity. Urban gardens are usually small areas which provide the challenge of bringing a rural atmosphere into the bustle of city life. Designing and producing a tranquil oasis whilst creating an illusion that the garden is bigger than what it actually is, is a daunting task but you do not need a large space to pull it off; what you do need is good soil, sunshine, water and determination. We start within the home as internal plants can be beneficial to our wellbeing; research suggests that plants can reduce stress, clean air and even quieten rooms! Within people’s homes, I have seen plants emerging from jam jars, terrariums as small as my palm and succulents dotted around the window sill. It is easy to bring tranquillity in to your busy home and bringing the

outdoors in is one way of doing it. If your aim is trick the eye into seeing more of a garden that what is actually there then there are many illusions that one could add to one’s

Symmetry is “ an excellent way to keep a garden elegant

garden. Having a seamless transition from your home to your outdoor space can be done by raising the outdoor ground to meet the level of the threshold. This in itself not only creates the illusion that your garden is bigger but also that the room leading to the garden is bigger as well. To extend this use similar shades of decking, plants and pots that complement the room that you are transitioning from. Once you are out in the gar-

37

den different levels and sections within your garden can energise it. It does not have to involve changing the ground level of your garden because instead or in addition to levelling it you can add raised beds, hanging baskets and / or small trees. This would draw the eye upwards and outwards and in turn maximise the impression of space. By placing slabs or decking horizontally will give the illusion of more space, as will adding a mirror to a wall which will increase light levels in dark corners. If keeping it simple is more to your taste then symmetry is an excellent way to keep a garden elegant, spacious and organised. Urban gardens can provide a space which can be aesthetically pleasing but also practical. Window boxes are a great way to utilise space and can be used to grow accessible herbs, strawberries, lettuce and tomatoes. Daisey McQuaid

An inside look at: Hidden amongst the historic Winterbourne suburban villa lays the beautiful botanical gardens, which has been awed by numerous visitors through out the years. It is seen as one of the best surviving examples of an Edwardian Arts and Crafts suburban villa garden in Birmingham. The garden was lovingly created by the homeowners, Margaret and John Nettlefold, using the books of Gertrude Jekyll as guides and inspiration. When the Nettlefolds left in 1919, two subsequent families called Winterbourne home. The latter, John Nicolson, was an avid gardener and built on the existing foundation with further features such as a Japanese bridge and scree garden. When the University took ownership in 1944 the botanical garden was used for study and relaxation by students, and research by the School of Botany. Today the botanical garden is Grade II listed and offers colour and interest throughout the year. The restored walled garden complete with crinklecrankle wall, is a riot of rainbow shades from May

until October. The lawns are fringed with striking colour themed borders, and beyond lies an original sandstone rock garden and a woodland walk through Gunnera leaves and Rhododendron displays. The botanical garden contains plants from around the globe with collections of plants from China, North and South America and the Alpine areas of the world. The garden offers something for all the ages including activity trails for the kids and a new children’s garden opening in 2017. The gardens are not the only attractions located on the sprawling and beautiful Winterbourne property. Within the property is the beloved family home of the Nettlefold family. Visitors to the house today can learn about the Nettlefold’s history and the families that came after them. Interactive exhibits bring the history of the house to life for children, and whilst little is known of how the interior would have looked during the Nettlefold’s tenure, rooms have been sympathetically recreated with beautiful William Morris print wallpapers and period furnishings to evoke the Edwardian era. Entry to the house is included in the tickets for the gardens.

Love Pets, Love The Pet Corner

The Pet Corner on Canada Way in Worcester has a new owner and she loves your pets as much as you do. Claire Ditchburn recently took over the business and plans on creating a one-stop shop for all your pet needs. With over 27 years experience as a veterinary nurse, Claire is hoping to add more services that cater to the health and pharmacy side of your pet’s well-being, including dental care, skin sensitivities, allergies, digestive health, parasite control and a wider range of preventative health care and tailored nutrition plans and treatments. The Pet Corner already offers a wide variety of products and amenities for pets including high quality natural food and treats, a wide selection of plush and tough toys including Kong as well as a specific section for grooming services. But it is Claire’s passion for all things pets that is going to help evolve the business to new levels. She says: “I love all animals, wild and domestic. I have a Bassett Hound/Staffie cross called Reggie who is 5 years old. He is completely spoilt but adorable...I’m delighted to have taken over such a well-established business that has a good reputation for providing

excellent service and selling high-quality natural food and treats for pets. I’m looking forward to continue to develop the ethos of loving our pets both inside and out.” Our holistic approach looks at the condition of the individual pet, the look, feel and shape, ensuring they have a nice waistline and look healthy no matter what breed they are. For more info on The Pet Corner like them on Facebook or come visit Claire and her team with your furry friends.

players will descend on London. World-numberthree Karolina Pliskova is the bookies’ favourite, ahead of number-one ranked Petra Kvitova. Last year’s finalist Angelique Kerber is on the fifth-line of betting, just ahead of Ostapenko and Serena’s big sister Venus. Murray and Federer are the joint-favourites to win the men’s singles crown. While his peers were slogging it out on the red dirt in Paris, seven-time champion Federer was resting his ageing legs for another crack at The Championships and will be hard to beat in 2017.

The exciting event can be seen on any sports channels but if you fancy to watch it with other tennis fans then head down to Birmingham where you can watch the finals for free on the big screen at central square in Brindley Place. They will be broadcasting the even live on July 9th and 10th and entry is free. For more information on the screening go to their website www.brindleyplace. com/event/watch-wimbledon-2/.

This year, the organizers decided to go with the record budget increase as the prize money rose by 12.5% in comparison to the last year’s edition. Both Gentlemen’s and Ladies’ singles champions will receive £2.2m, representing a 10% increase from the past tournament.

WHEN A LOVED ONE PASSES AWAY Knowing what to do when someone passes away is always one of those experiences for which in life we never become an expert in, as most of us will only arrange on average between 1-2 funerals in our lifetime. As well as having to cope emotionally there can seem to be lots of decisions that you have to make in a short period of time. In the initial days depending on where the person has passed away will depend on what you need to do next and speaking with friends and family or the funeral director is a good way to get advice. It always seems like there is lot’s to do on top of making the initial arrangements and it can be important to give yourself time to make the right decision for you. The best advice when looking for a funeral is always to shop around to make sure you get the service which you are looking for and

that is right for you. There will be many people who are there to support you from Clergy to Civil Celebrants, Grief counselling as well as your initial contact with the funeral director you choose. On this page are funeral services available to you in the local community.

HOROSCOPES Sagittarius (Nov 22 - Dec 21) Back it up, Sagittarius. For the first three weeks of the month, the Sun is burning through Cancer, your eighth house of intimacy and power, and fueling you with intensity. Capricorn (Dec 22 - Jan 19) Flying solo? Your wings must be getting tired, Capricorn! This month’s solar spotlight is on companionship, as the Sun spreads its rays over the two most partnershipcentric fields of your chart. Aquarius (Jan 20 - Feb 18) ‘Tis better to let go of that which you cannot control, Water Bearer. This is especially true as the Sun heats up the action in Cancer, your sixth house of health, efficiency and organization, until July 22. Pisces (Feb 19 - March 20) Let the summer heat rise, Pisces! July is your most ripe and ribald time of year, when the Sun makes its annual foray through Cancer, heating up your passionate, lusty and expressive house. Aries (March 21 - April 19) There’s no place like home, Aries. Whether you define home as the ease you feel with dear friend or partner, or a sacred place that connects you to your roots, this month’s stars set your compass toward emotional security. Tarus (April 20 - May 20) Get out and circulate! The Sun is flitting through Cancer, putting you in interactive spirits. Conversations could quickly turn into brainstorming sessions.

Gemini (May 21 - June 20) Keep it simple, Gemini! After an eventful spring you won’t need much convincing in that department. July’s stars could finally give all of us a breather from the twists and turns of May and June. Cancer (June 21 0 July 22) Toss the glitter, cut the cake: It’s your birthday season, Crab! The Sun is in Cancer until July 22, kicking off a brand-new solar cycle for the year ahead. This is your month to focus on Numero Uno Leo (July 23 - Aug 22) As the month kicks off you aren’t in your normal life-ofthe-party mode, Leo, and that’s okay. It’s time for you to chill. You might be feeling a little out of sorts, craving more solitude than usual under this starmap. Virgo (Aug 23 - Sept 22) Where are your people at, Virgo? This month is all about connecting with your tribe, both socially and professionally, as the Sun zooms through Cancer and your eleventh house of group activity and friendships. Libra (Sept 23 - Oct 22) World domination or bust, Libra! While others are cashing in their vacation days and lazing around at the beach, you could be raising the temperatures as a hot commodity on the j-o-b. Scorpio (Oct 23 - Nov 21) Cast a wide net, Scorpio! Widen your viewfinder, O Focused One, and you’ll see all the possibilities you may have missed.

Free your mind and cure your fears and phobias today People often feel trapped by issues such as fear, phobias, guilt, negativity, and lack of confidence. They may have been programmed into a child at a young age, there may be no apparent reason that these issues arise, but the good news is that no one needs suffer in this way for the rest of their life. No one is born with these issues, and if you want to let them go they can be removed with the help of the right therapist. A person who wishes to consciously overcome the fear of spiders, for example, may have tried everything they can consciously to, to no avail because the problem is not in the conscious mind. A therapist, such as Karen Baughan, will help a client to bypass their conscious mind and speak directly to the subconscious, where the fears and phobias have taken root. As the mind is in a relaxed state it becomes easier to understand where the problems arise, and to release the effects and free themselves from the emotions that are holding them back. One of Karen’s motivations to become a

qualified hypnotherapist, Time Line Therapist, and NeuroLinguistic Programming (NLP) Master Practitioner Coach, was her own fear of rats and mice. Something that badly affected her everyday life and prevented her from sleeping in case rodents were invading the bedroom as she slept. Having been completely cured of this fear, she has gone on to do the same for many other people with different phobias and issues. Karen has also lost nearly 4 stone in weight since she trained, and put into practice what she has learned. Karen will help you to release this fears and trust in yourself and your ability to cope in the future. Karen is also co-hosting an event at Stone Manor Hotel near Kidderminster, with her friend Deb Hawken, aimed at strengthening your intuitive and psychic abilities, and giving you tools to help you deal with everyday problems in a creative way. The event is on Saturday 15th July, and you can contact Karen on 07745 426 907, or visit her Facebook Page and make contact that way.

Holidaying for the elderly It’s that time of the year where you should start planning the annual holiday. Maybe this year could be the time to revisit previous holiday destinations where fond memories can be rekindled. There are lots of different opportunities awaiting the intrepid traveller. So, where to start? It depends on whether you’re going on your own, with the family or maybe you would like the security of an escorted holiday or a specialist respite holiday where someone can care for you. So research and preparation is a good place to start and also can be fun. There are specialist agents that are geared around holidays for the over 50’s. They can help you decide and organise your great get-away without too much fuss. Firstly work out where you would

like to go; this can be dependent on what type of climate you prefer, what time of year you’d like to go, how far you want, or indeed in some cases, how far you can travel, and whether your destination is easy to get to for those who may have mobility issues. They can also help you to find the right insurance cover if you have mobility or health issues. When you’ve decided where you want to go, why not ask if there are any discounts available, especially with

especially with cruises as they will sometimes offer upgrades if you book early enough. It’s a good tip to try to book a year in advance with cruises as you will get all the best times and deals to suit you. If you fancy the Rhine there is a company that runs a ship that is designed to cater for people with restricted mobility so maybe ask your travel agent about this or go online to find out more. If you have difficulties with mobility you can ask if there are adapted rooms or ask for a room on the ground floor, this may prevent any issues with stairs. Airports and train stations can be daunting sometimes so if you’re planning to travel by air or rail you may want to arrange for some assistance with getting to the plane or train. This needs to be done in advance so don’t leave this too late to arrange as it can make the whole experience of travelling much more pleasant. With all that taken care of, it’s just a case of packing and heading off. But remember when packing you may need to pack extra items for your holiday, such as, copies of repeat prescriptions as this will help you to reorder your medication

Free Energy Efficiency Advice and Grants

should you run out or lose them. It’s also a good idea to photocopy your passport and insurance documents as again if you lose them you have the necessary information. Most people keep all their contacts on their phones so it’s worth putting important phone numbers down on a card and keeping a couple of copies on you and in your luggage in case your mobile runs out of battery whist travelling and you need to contact someone. Oh yes don’t forget some clothes otherwise it may be a holiday to remember for all the wrong reasons! Happy exploring!

The Müller Anniversary Games is one of the best athletics events in the world and will play host to the superstars of the sport on Sunday 9th July at the former Olympic Stadium in London. The prestigious IAAF Diamond League meeting attracts the biggest names in athletics and was a key part of Usain Bolt’s season in 2015 and 2016. The world’s fastest man was victorious in the 200m last July and there were also victories for British stars Mo Farah, Katarina Johnson-Thompson and Laura Muir. American Kendra Harrison stole the show as she broke the 100m hurdles world record to cap a memorable event in the capital.

Furthermore, at this year’s games the attempt to break previous records will be top news. Laura Muir will chase Zola Budd’s 32-year-old British mile record of 4min 17.57sec. At last year’s Anniversary Games, Muir broke the British 1,500m record, running 3min 57.49sec, and she has been in flying form so far in 2017, taking double gold at the European Indoor Championships. With the IAAF and IPC World Championships taking place just a matter of weeks after the Müller Anniversary Games, the 2017 event looks set to be the best edition ever as the world’s best athletes finalise their preparations for the global championships.

This year a host of the world’s best athletes, including the very best of Britain will be at the games. Mo Farah will be a headline attraction as the four-time Olympic-gold medallist competes for the final time at the Anniversary Games. It will be an important tune-up as he prepares to defend his 5000m and 10,000m world titles just weeks later, after which he will retire from the track to transition to the roads.

RESTAURANT REVIEW OF THE MONTH: Friar St Kitchen Friar Street Kitchen is the latest edition to the Friar Street eateries in Worcester and a worthy successor to its previous resident Burgerworks.

grills and burgers. I chose a free-range Skillet chicken, which was surrounded by a delicately spiced mixture of mushrooms, pepper and onions sitting in a drizzle of soy sauce. The main dish was accompanied by fries with their skins half peeled back and a standard house salad. For dessert, I had a delicious lemon tart in a buttery crisp pastry which was both sharp and sweet and two scoops of vanilla ice cream. The decor is appropriately low key which enables the original features of the exposed brick wall, blue pillars and ironwork to stand out. The service was friendly and on a Thursday night there were many diners in, reflecting the quality. Stuart Bryan

The British Heart Foundation With heart disease being UK’s single biggest killer, the British Heart Foundation is working hard to lead the fight against it. The British Heart Foundation is the nation’s heart charity and the largest independent funder for cardiovascular research. Founded in 1961 by a group of medical professionals wanting to fund extra research into the causes, diagnosis, treatment and prevent of heard disease, the BHF has spent the last 50 years raising countless funds to help beat the devastating disease. In Worcester, the BHF charity shop located on Pump Street sells a fantastic range of good quality second hand items and new goods; from clothing, shoes and accessories to books, music, toys and household items. They also stock greeting cards for all occasions, pin badges and small gifts. By shopping at the shop you are helping the BHF continue their life saving work.

The BHF shop also asks that community members not throw away their unwanted items and instead to give your pre-loved stuff a second chance by donating it to the charity shop. We all know that we should take care of our car every week around the year, but if we are honest, how many of us actually check the water levels, and tyre pressure every week! However when it comes to the winter, a quick mini service, which anyone can do, may well save a lot of time, trouble and money. The top list is

• Check the anti freeze, this prevents the water coolant from freezing • Check windscreen wipers to ensure that in driving rain and snow you always have clear vision. • Check water level for windscreen washer, this will clear away the slush and dirt when driving in the snow. • Check tyre tread – including your spare, and ensure you have plenty of tread on your tyres to

cope with icy nd wet conditions. • Check the oil level • Check all lights and indicators and horn are working You will never know if you might ever get caught in a really cold snap so it is always worth carrying a blanket, a snow shovel, extra clothing and if you are going on a long journey, thena flask of hot drink would not go amiss.

Daniel Ricciardo of Red Bull grabbed his first win of the 2017 Formula 1 campaign during the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, surviving an incident-filled race. Valtteri Bottas of Mercedes took second place from Williams rookie Lance Stroll on the final straight. Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel and Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton had a controversial incident, and the latter had to pit due to a loose headrest, while Bottas and Kimi Raikkonen made contact on the opening lap, dooming their chances of winning. Let’s hope there is more exciting wheel to wheel action in July’s races where F1 comes home!

competition and much will depend on winning our home games. In the more sedate 4-day version of the game, the county make the short journey to Cheltenham to take on neighbours Gloucestershire. The good start in the county championship offers a real hope of promotion, behind Nottinghamshire who seem certain to regain top flight status regain are odds on at the first attempt. Chris Davies

Events on the field have been overshadowed by news of the immediate departure of talented young batsman Tom Kohler-Cadmore to Yorkshire. Tom has been outstanding in one day cricket this season and it was perhaps no surprise that the county were soundly beaten by Surrey in the semi final of the Royal London Cup. Defeats in the county championship, against Sussex ad Glamorgan, also followed but the team were back to winning ways with a quite brilliant win against Kent, scoring 400 runs in the fourth innings to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Attention turns now to the hurly-burly of the 2020 competition starting with a keenly anticipated contest against local rivals Birmingham Bears at New Road - the first of 14 games in five weeks. Steve's Fitness tip of the month Burpees

To get the most from every rep, you need to know how to do a burpee with picture-perfect form.. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, weight in your heels, and your arms at your sides. / Push your hips back, bend your knees, and lower your body into a squat. Place your hands on the floor directly in front of, and just inside, your feet. Shift your weight onto them. Jump your feet back to softly land on the balls of your feet in a plank position. Your body should form a straight line from your head to heels. Be careful not to let your back sag or you butt stick up in the air, as both can keep you from effectively working your core. Jump your feet back so that they land just outside of your hands. Reach your arms over head and explosively jump up into the air...
