What we can do for you... HR & Employment Law

An HR customer’s experience Care Network Cambridgeshire is a medium-sized charity offering ‘home from hospital’ support, support for community groups and sign-posting to local services for the Cambridge and Peterborough community. It has forty staff spread over seven sites, 75% of whom work part time. The organisation’s growth has made managing HR more complex so it commissioned Charity BackRoom’s HR & Employment Law Service to help with day to day management – and with a difficult staff issue. Paul Jefford of Care Network Cambridgeshire explains:-“Right from the start Charity BackRoom talked our language. They know charities and how they work so it was easy to work with them. They’ve given us HR support with everything from basic letters of appointment to help with a difficult situation, advising us on how to handle it and responding quickly to queries. Charity BackRoom haven’t just saved us money, the amount of time we’ve saved is phenomenal.”

Charity BackRoom has teamed up with Sphere Risk Health and Safety Management to help translate health and safety regulations and procedures into terms you can understand, to help you become compliant – and stay there. Our Risk Discovery Assessment helps you build up a profile of the health and safety risks of your operations and activities, to inform a full risk assessment and health and safety policy , which we’ll produce for you. You’ll have all the documentation you need to continually assess health and safety in your organisation and put policy into practice. As part of our ongoing relationship with you we’ll keep you up to date with a monthly Health and Safety email; and when you take up our Bronze, Silver or Gold service packages you’ll benefit from two to six half day site visits per year, tailored to your needs – from inspections to knowledge transfer and training.

A Health and Safety Customer’s experience “Revitalise offers carers a much-needed break for when looking after those who are ill becomes hard to cope with. With three respite centres and fourteen shops to manage, health and safety is a major concern. The organisation turned to Charity BackRoom after receiving poor service from previous providers, as John Parker explains:“We’ve worked with numerous health and safety consultants over the years, who cut corners and took a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to our very different service environments. Charity BackRoom’s partner provider, Sphere Risk Health and Safety Management, has done what they said they will do and is conducting audits and reviews of health and safety at all our premises. We then receive health and safety documentation and training as part of our contract. It’s apparent that they have our best interests at heart – we are confident we are getting what we need this time.”

A Payroll client’s experience The General Assembly of Unitarian and Free Christian Churches has ministers all over England. Managing the salaries of twenty five churches was taking up about two days a month for Head of Finance and Administration Martin Sarbicki, especially with the requirements for real time information by HMRC. “I had a look at various software options,” he explains “but none of them were tailored to charities. Charity BackRoom’s service made it all very straight forward and I now wonder why I ever tried to do it myself. The only time investment I had to make was getting all the information together at the beginning but it was well worth it – now individual churches supply their timesheets to Charity BackRoom and they’re paid within a day. Even those without computers find the service easy to understand and use. The CBR payroll team are completely trustworthy and are really good at prompting me when they need information. I wouldn’t go with any other service now – and the only comeback I’ve had from churches is that it works.”

An DBS customer’s experience YMCA Norfolk runs seven different youth hostels around Norfolk and works with a wide range of staff and customers. The organisation’s client base means that it has to ensure that its staff are DBS checked, and it carries out between ten and twenty checks per month. YMCA HR adviser, Lisa Xuereb, has been using Charity BackRoom’s online DBS platform for the last twelve months, having used the manual service provided by another supplier, with unsatisfactory results. “The system is really easy to use, but when we’ve encountered the odd glitch, Charity BackRoom has been there at the end of the phone to help us out”, she explains “The speed of completion is fantastic and the fact that we’ve got a great relationship with them makes life so much easier. With shops as well as service delivery, its 250 staff and 450 volunteers have a mixed portfolio of skills, backgrounds and needs. CEO Elizabeth Phillips has counted on Charity BackRoom for HR support and with recruiting her replacement too:“It’s essential for charities like ours to do the right thing when it comes to managing and supporting staff,” she explains; “Charity BackRoom has helped us with a number of staff and re-organisation issues and stood alongside us in tackling difficult HR challenges. That’s why, when it came to replacing my own role as CEO, we also turned to them for help with recruitment. They’ve taken so much pressure off us. From placing our advert – at rates we’d never be able to get ourselves- to handling enquiries about the role and providing applicants with all the paperwork. Knowing they’re in the charity sector themselves and sharing our philosophy, makes a huge difference. They understand the issues we face and our commitment to our staff, but they also know that every penny counts.” Elizabeth Phillips - Chief Executive Officer, Age UK Warwickshire
