MANUAL LAMINATORS

Manual Laminators

Hot Press have always been known for supplying the best quality equipment for professional print presentation. As new markets emerge their aim is to deliver machinery that is perfect for the job. The home workshop and limited space retail sector has been growing in recent years and though many people would like a JetMounter™ or a Hot Press™ – they simply do not have the room. With this in mind we are pleased to offer two machines that will suit users in these markets. Both machines are designed to work with all Hot Press™ PRESSURE SENSITIVE mounting & laminating materials.

JetMounter™ ML12 - MANUAL LAMINATOR

JetMounter™ ML25 - MANUAL LAMINATOR

This “cold” laminator is perfect for the home user or for those who only need to laminate smaller items. Though built as a table top unit it is still capable of doing a wide variety of jobs. With a maximum opening height of an impressive 20mm it is perfect for people wanting to produce chunky style acrylic blocks and MDF block mounts. The maximum working width of this model is 335mm which means that work up to the popular Super A3+ size can be accommodated. The height is set with twin adjusters and work is transported through the laminator by a hand crank handle. Due to its light weight construction, when not in use the laminator can be easily stored away. Please note this laminator requires some self assembly which will require a screwdriver.

Though the motorised JetMounter™ 26 is the most popular machine in our laminator range, it may be a little over specified for the occasional or home user. With their huge range of 650mm wide materials Hot Press were asked for a laminator that would handle this size of materials, but is lighter in weight and with a more basic specification. The ML25 “cold” laminator has a working width of 650mm and opens to 20mm high. Work is transported through the laminator by a hand crank handle. Due to its light weight construction and fold up feed tables, the laminator can be easily stored away, when not in use.

MACHINE POSITIONING Smaller JetMounters™ are designed to be operated on any desk or work bench and are light-weight for easy storing. Larger laminators can be bench mounted or fitted to a custom designed stand with wheels for easy manoeuvring around the workshop. OPERATING WIDTHS JetMounters™ come in a variety of sizes with maximum operating widths from 670mm to 1400mm. Small jobs can be processed on larger machines with ease, so it is important to consider the maximum width you will require. BOARD THICKNESS AND ADJUSTMENT For maximum versatility JetMounters™ are fitted with variable height adjusters. From the thinnest graphic to the thickest panel it is simple to set

up your JetMounter™ to use the right amount of pressure across your work. All JetMounter™ motorised laminators open to an impressive 25mm board depth. FORWARD AND REVERSE OPERATION Though JetMounters™ are designed to feed your work through from the front to the back, they have a useful reverse operation switch that allows for accurate positioning of precision jobs.

SAFETY FEATURES Safety in the workshop is vital and the JetMounter™ range of laminators use ‘magic eye’ technology to stop the laminator when a possible obstruction enters the rollers. Additionally, emergency stop buttons and reset procedures ensure safe working conditions for operators.

VARIABLE SPEED CONTROL For new laminator users the variable speed control is a great feature which allows you to build your confidence by using the machine at slower speeds. As your expertise grows you can move to faster speeds and the top speed will save you time and money.

AUTO OR FOOT OPERATION JetMounter™ laminators can be set to run automatically for the continuous feed of boards or can be set for foot switch operation. When using the foot switch the operator has both hands completely free to handle the work going through the machine.

PRESSURE SENSITIVE MOUNTING FILMS Our comprehensive range of pressure sensitive or “cold” mounting films is ideal for all types of mounting projects. From board & print mounting to specialist applications such as face mounting to acrylic & window graphics – we have the right adhesives for you. As you would expect, all our films use only the highest quality adhesives, carriers & release liners so you can always be assured of the best results.

DOUBLE SIDED MOUNT FILM

TRANSPARENCY MOUNT FILM - SYNART™

This is our most popular pressure sensitive film. It works well with all kinds of “cold” laminators and can even be applied by hand for specialist jobs. Double Sided Mount Film is suitable for all kinds of artwork from plain paper and posters to inkjet and photographic media. Due to its strength and flexibility it also works with plastic based media and textured art papers. This product works well with all kinds of mounting boards, from White Display Board and Foam Centred Boards to MDF & Rigid Plastic Boards. The product itself is formed from a clear central carrier film, which is coated on both sides with a very strong adhesive. Each adhesive layer is then protected by a grid marked release liner. The two separate release liners mean that this adhesive can be rolled out on the work bench and simply cut to the correct size for each mounting job. Off-cuts of material need not be wasted, but used for smaller jobs later.

Mounting images to clear acrylic panels, originally practised in the sign making industry, has always been popular. Creating large, illuminated signs for shopping centres, airports and other public areas, where the work is viewed from a distance, only requires a basic, optically clear film. Polypropylene is used as the central core of this film and the product is fine for those looking for an economy product. SYNART™, as its name suggests, is primarily used for the production of acrylic signage; for artwork that is to be viewed in the home we would suggest looking at our superior FYNART™ product. This is the more established and superior quality optically clear mounting film. For wall art and acrylic blocks this film offers a much better colour rendition and is truly invisible even when viewed close up. FYNART™is the choice of photographers, framers, digital artists and photo labs who want to produce the highest quality products and charge a premium for their work. The central layer of this film is made from polyester – which gives a much higher clarity than polypropylene or PVC films. Code

SELF WOUND MOUNTING FILM - STANDARD

This mounting film has a number of uses. Its primary function is as an adhesive for applying artwork and signage to windows and other clear surfaces. The first side of the mount film has a conventional permanent adhesive and this is intended to be stuck to the front or back of the artwork itself, depending on the application. The second side of the film has a special release liner that, when peeled back, exposes a micro-pyramid pattern adhesive. The texture of the adhesive means that when the artwork or graphic is hand-applied to the window, the image rests with only the points of the micro-pyramids touching the glass. This has two benefits: air can easily be pushed out leaving no bubbles and the image can easily be re-positioned as required. When the artwork is to be removed it does so cleanly from the glass with no residue left behind.

Code

ALTERNATIVE USES Another popular use of WINDOWART™ is its application to the back of photographs, so that they can be stuck to wedding album pages and will still peel off if adjustment is required. When an album is completed to your satisfaction, the prints can then be made permanent by pressing the images with a print roller, which ‘pops’ the micro-pyramids and gives a full adhesive coverage. WINDOWART™ is also ideal for making temporary signage for walls, doors, counter tops and even vehicles. When making signs the WINDOWART™ is applied to the back of the graphic and the graphic is usually laminated with a top film for durability. This method requires that the surface stuck to is clean and smooth. Code

We offer two self wound mounting films for use with laminators that feature an unwind shaft on the top. Self wound mounting films have only one release liner, which is non-stick on both sides. As the roll is unwound the adhesive layer is exposed, so these films cannot be used for cut sheet applications. Additionally the full width of the roll will always be used as the film passes through the laminator, making self wound films more suited to volume jobs, where a large number of boards or images are to be processed at the same time. Our STANDARD variant is a general purpose film that is suitable for most kinds of artwork, from plain paper and posters to inkjet and photographic media. It works well with all kinds of mounting substrates, from white display board and foam centred boards to MDF and rigid plastic boards.

PRESSURE SENSITIVE LAMINATION FILMS The Hot Press range of pressure sensitive or “cold” lamination films are designed for use with the JetMounter™ and other quality roller laminators. The films work well at room temperature and provide superior protection from abrasion, moisture and pollutants. All contain UV stabilisers and absorbers to inhibit fading and discolouration from sunlight.

The overall effect of this film is a soft and smooth sheen effect. This film is often used to laminate paper posters and prints, as its subtle finish closely mimics that of the original printed piece. The satin finish reduces glare but doesn’t reduce contrast. Another popular use for Satin Matt is as a protective laminate for images in wedding albums; as the film is relatively thin it doesn’t add too much bulk to the album.

The purpose of the full matt finish of this film is to eliminate reflections. FULL MATT is most often used where lighting is unpredictable and uncontrollable, such as in exhibition halls and other public places. This film is very useful for creating a protective surface that doesn’t actually look laminated, as it is virtually undetectable to the naked eye. It also offers additional UV protection when used behind plain glass, yet is almost invisible.

This is a very heavy gauge fabric texture that is reminiscent of real canvas. Canvastex is a good alternative to either printing to, or indeed mounting on, real canvas. The use of less expensive media and less ink make this product a cost effective alternative to more expensive printable canvases. The protection of inkjet canvas by lamination is highly recommended, as it is very susceptible to damage. But this is usually only possible using a heat vacuum method. Canvastex opens up many new opportunities for cold laminator users to capitalise on the trend for canvas look prints. Canvastex is very durable and like all laminates, easy to clean, making it ideal for work that is on show in public areas, such as hotels, restaurants, cafes and clubs. Canvastex creates the illusion that the image has been printed onto canvas but is much tougher and easier to maintain. Canvastex is well suited to photographic portraiture, landscapes and many kinds of artwork that simulate paintings, both traditional and modern.

PHOTO UV STEEL 90μ

ECO UV SATIN MATT 50μ

This film has a unique brushed steel finish that looks good on both modern and traditional artwork. The effect is technically known as a ‘florentine’ pattern. This pattern is common on gold and silver picture frame mouldings and when used together with our steel finish has a very harmonising effect. Steel can be used with modern images to create a contemporary feel, or traditional images to create a brush stroke effect.

This is a new addition to the HOT PRESS™ pressure sensitive or ‘cold’ range. The overall effect of this film is a soft and smooth sheen effect. This film is suitable for paper posters and prints. Unlike PHOTO UV films it is made with a water-based adhesive.

Pressure Sensitive Lamination Films

This film offers a medium grain leather texture and can be used on a wide variety of artwork to create a distinctive effect. It can also be used to cover coloured papers to create a leather-look covering for books and albums. When coated onto coloured mount boards it makes great leather mounts for picture surrounds. As leather is currently very popular for household furniture this is a great time to return a leather finish to our extensive range.

CHALKBOARD LAMINATE These two products are primarily designed for the production of chalkboards. The adhesive backing can be hand rubbed onto your chosen board or processed through a cold laminator. The film itself is tough, thick and opaque. It comes in a choice of traditional green or black. The specially prepared top surface has a grainy texture and allows chalk to be applied and later removed with a wet cloth or sponge. Chalkboards are popular not only in the class room, but are very useful in kitchens, workshops, offices children’s rooms and anywhere that constantly changing information needs to be seen and updated. Making small chalkboards as ornaments or wall decoration for the home is a great way to use up short lengths of moulding, cutting down waste in picture framing workshops.

Black chalkboard laminate is ideal as a protective and decorative backing for acrylic blocks, making the product look more ‘finished’. It can also be used as a backing for block mounted work on MDF. Not only does it look far superior to a bare MDF but it eliminates the possibility of the block warping or bowing. When one side of thick MDF is sealed with adhesive and a print, the other side is left open to absorb moisture in the atmosphere. In extreme conditions this can cause the MDF to expand at the back giving a ‘banana effect’ to the board.

ACRYLIC BLOCKS New from Wessex Pictures for 2014 is this stunning range of acrylic blocks, which come in two thicknesses and a variety of popular standard sizes. ‘Face Mounting’ images to acrylic has become very popular in recent years. The effect is very eye-catching, with colours showing great vibrancy and images taking on an almost 3D appearance. The look is modern and minimalist which appeals to a wide range of people. These blocks are designed to be ‘free standing’ and look great on shelves, mantelpieces and coffee tables. Unlike images that are ‘sandwiched’ between two pieces of acrylic, images actually mounted to acrylic are in a class of their own. These blocks feature superior grade ‘diamond polishing on their edges and they are protected by a tough release liner. You will need a cold laminator to create these blocks and we strongly recommend the use of our TRANSPARENCY MOUNT FILM - FYNART™ film for the job. Images on blocks will be held in the hand from time to time, so the highest quality finish is a must. Our blocks are custom manufactured in the UK with the highest quality acrylic for consistent quality and finish.

Special notes...

Acrylic Blocks

Some acrylic block suppliers sell ‘exact to size’ blocks, making it almost impossible to get a perfect match with a print of that size. Our blocks have been purposely created to be slightly smaller than the image they are designed for. This allows for easy positioning of the print, with a small waste edge being trimmed away when the work is completed. This means you will always get a truly professional result. The addition of black chalkboard laminate to the back of your blocks adds an extra dimension in the style department.

HEATED GLASS VACUUM PRESSES Based on a unique and proven technology, the Heated Glass Vacuum Press, or quite simply ‘The Hot Press’ as it is fondly and almost universally known, sets the standard for excellence in all areas of heat mounting and lamination. Regarded by many as the ‘industry standard’ machine for picture framers, these machines are also commonly used by restorers and professional print finishers worldwide.

Key Features...

Hot Glass Vacuum Presses

The HOT PRESS™ has been constantly evolving for more than twenty years and represents the most convenient and efficient way of hot mounting in the modern framing or imaging workshop. The Hot Press is capable of handling a wide range of presentation materials, from white display board, foam centred board and MDF to photographs, art prints, inkjet canvases and delicate fabrics. No great physical strength is required to operate the machine and all types of work can be processed with ease. Additionally the Hot Press can be filled with multiple projects at one time, thus saving time and energy. The Hot Press will efficiently process 25mm MDF on one side of the bed, whilst simultaneously processing 1mm card on the other. The transparent top panel of the Hot Press allows work to be viewed throughout most standard dry mounting procedures.

The Hot Press comes in a choice of three sizes, to suit all business types and these are based around common board and graphics sizes. The rugged construction of the Hot Press offers both strength and durability. Its glass, steel and aluminium construction stop the press twisting for consistently good levels of vacuum. This rigidity means that you only need the simple set of rubber feet to support the machine stably. There is no need to adjust these feet or to balance the press with a spirit level, unlike other flimsier machines. We offer custom made press stands for each Hot Press model and these support the machine safely. Power for the dedicated vacuum pump is supplied directly from the press itself, which means there is no need for extra wiring and is fast to set up. The airline connections between the press and pump are simple push / pull fittings. Connecting the air line requires no tools and no specialist skills. When it comes to safety the Hot Press is CE approved and features safety cut outs, which protect the machine and user from both power surges and short circuits.

16 www.wessexpictures.com • 01590 681681

The lid of the Hot Press is supported by gas struts which mean the opening and closing operation requires very little effort. The generous opening height of the lid also ensures good access to the working area so that work maybe accurately positioned on the working bed. The bed of the Hot Press is a heavy duty rubber diaphragm. This creates the pressure against the heated glass platen to sandwich the work in progress. The uniquely textured surface of the diaphragm allows air to move easily towards the air suction port, which removes the air from the machine, so a vacuum may be formed. The easy to read vacuum gauge shows how much pressure is being applied and how long it takes to achieve the desired level of vacuum. Finally the Hot Press comes with a comprehensive user manual and a full training DVD, which is a great constant resource when learning new skills and all the capabilities of these very versatile machines.

TIMING SYSTEM

PRESSURE SYSTEM

The Hot Press comes with a built-in programmable process timer, so a time can be set and the timer started, leaving the operator free to prepare the next job. When the timing cycle is completed the vacuum pump will switch off, the atmospheric pressure is returned to the press and the timer resets for the next project. This again saves time. When processing large volumes of work, the programmable timer can be set to the minimum time required for each batch of work, again maximising productivity. The timer has two different and distinct modes of operation. The AUTO setting allows for timed operation on repetitive jobs, whilst the MANUAL setting allows the flexability to set the machine running whilst you do other work. In this mode it will keep running until you are free to return to the job.

Model

Product

HEATING SYSTEM

The Hot Press typically deliver 14lbs of pressure per square inch and this is enough to process any kind of project. In fact, the pressure may even need reducing for certain jobs. This can be done by use of the pressure control valve, which fine tunes the pressure to your exact needs. Hot Presses are supplied with their own dedicated vacuum pump. These units require no oiling, but they will collect moisture from damp artwork and boards. This moisture is collected in a moisture trap flask, which should be emptied periodically. The variable pressure control ensures the right pressure is set for each individual job and minimises even heavy creases and wrinkles, whilst ensuring that delicate items such as foam board and embossed prints are not crushed.

The heart of the Hot Press is its unique heating system. This is widely acknowledged as the best press heating system in the world. By passing electricity across a special conductive coating on a sheet of toughened glass, a very even heat is created. This heat is monitored several times every second by a special sensor and can be controlled to within 2ºc. The use of a glass platen, rather than a metal one, leads to fast warm up times, from room temperature to working temperature and a very even distribution of heat across its surface. This eliminates the need for ‘press watching’ and increases productivity in the workshop. The adjustable temperature control allows all kinds of artwork to be dry mounted, even those that may be damaged by heat. The versatile temperature controller allows temperatures from 0ºc to 115ºc to be set on the machine. Cold operation of the Hot Press, by turning the temperature down, also means the machine can be used with wet adhesives for low value jobs.

PRESS STANDS

Hot Glass Vacuum Presses

Hot Press custom built press stands are constructed of heavy gauge steel and designed to hold your press safely and securely. Whilst some people choose to build their own press bench, these press stands can be modified with a little ingenuity. By adding a thick MDF or similar sheet to the bracing cross members, a very handy shelf can be constructed. By attaching steel cups to the side bars, rolls can be supported on cross bars too.

HEAT ACTIVATED DRY MOUNTING TISSUES Dry mounting, using heat and pressure to bond artwork to boards, is hardly new technology. In fact it has a pedigree that goes back well over 110 years. Dry mounting tissues are the simplest of products to use, but Hot Press™ continue to make sure that theirs set the highest standards in the print finishing industry.

This premium grade dry mounting tissue is widely regarded as the industry standard for the permanent mounting of all types of flat artwork. It is especially popular among bespoke picture framers and photo processors, due to its superb “lay flat” properties. Unimount Classic™ is suitable for mounting posters, prints, photographs, inkjets, pastels, charcoals, colour copies, maps, charts, blue prints and plans. Unimount Classic™ is compatible with a wide variety of substrates, including mount board, pulp boards and grey boards, foam centred boards, hardboard, MDF and of course, the board that is specifically designed for professional finishing - White Display Board. Unlike some lesser tissues, Unimount Classic™ has a very wide activation temperature range, from around 70ºc to 115ºc, making it ideal for a huge range of jobs. Unimount Classic™has a very high grade adhesive, which is impregnated into a porous pH neutral tissue. The tissue itself has excellent breathability, which allows air to escape from the various layers of your work. Code

HOW TO USE ARTSAFE 200™

ArtSafe 200 Dry Mount Tissue

HMAS39082 985mm x 25M (39” x 82’)

Per Roll £109.28

To use Artsafe 200™ simply cut a piece of tissue to your chosen size and place it face down on your mounting board (archival recommended). Then Hot Press the assembly at full pressure and at the desired temperature for approximately 1 minute, before removing the board from the press and allowing it to thoroughly cool down. The carrier release paper can now be removed to expose the heat sensitive tissue. The second stage is to carefully place the artwork on the tissue and cover with clear silicone release film. Then re-press the assembly under heat and pressure for between 1 to 4 minutes, dependant on artwork size and board type.

BASIC DRY MOUNTING CONSIDERATIONS... Dry mounting is the process of bonding an image to a mounting board. The process is simple and takes only a few minutes, but there are a number of factors to be considered. The important fundamentals of dry mounting are summarised below.

Firstly, consider the artwork you wish to mount. • How will it react to heat? • Does it require pre-drying to remove excess moisture? • Does it require pre-pressing to remove any creases? • Is the artwork clean and free from dust / dirt / stickers or tape?

For an in-depth understanding of dry mounting techniques,

• Is the artwork porous?

we invite you to attend one of our

• Does it have an image that may shift (as in the case of pastels)? All these points should be considered before proceeding. With a little experience they will become second nature.

FREE

training schools

Secondly, determine what type of board is compatible with your artwork • What is the optimum thickness? Is quality or price your primary objective? Will the board need to be pre-dried to remove excess moisture?

Basic Dry Mounting Considerations

Would a smooth board benefit the artwork? Does the board need to be coloured or textured? Is the board porous? Based on these conclusions, you can identify the best adhesive for this combination of artwork and board. Please consult individual product descriptions and recommendations to arrive at the best match - or call us for more help.

It is not possible to pierce dry mount film during the manufacturing process, as it has a peel off release liner on both sides. Piercing through either of the liner papers would lead to tiny specks of paper being embedded in the film itself and create a poor finish. To pierce dry mount film yourself we recommend that you cut a piece to the desired size and place it on a cutting mat. Then peel off one release paper, to expose the bare adhesive layer (adhesive face up). Now pierce with a piercing tool, making sure to cover the whole area with holes at a minimum of less than 1cm apart. You cannot really pierce too much and more holes are better than fewer. Now apply the pierced film to your artwork or board as required. The tiny pieces of plastic that are punched out will embed in the bottom paper layer, which is discarded later.

ACID FREE MOUNT FILM This is a “pure film” adhesive which melts as it is heated up and bonds as it cools and solidifies. Acid Free Mount Film also conforms well to uneven surfaces such as watercolour paper and fabrics, making it a versatile adhesive for most types of artwork and boards. It is widely believed that in most instances, this bond can be reversed by re-heating the adhesive, though we would strongly caution against this and offer no guarantee of success. Code

Heat Activated Mounting Films

This is the most aggressive hot adhesive in the Hot Press™ range and is the perfect partner to Unimount Classic™ tissue. Where Unimount Classic™ is cost effective and good for most jobs, Dry Mount Film Clear steps in when tougher challenges arise. When the adhesive is exposed at room temperature it has a low level of tackiness. This allows the film to be positioned or tacked onto either your artwork or mounting board as desired. Dry Mount Film Clear is especially recommended for wood, MDF, plastics, textured art papers, canvases and other fabrics. This adhesive will bond well to both highly textured and very smooth surfaces. The main difference between mounting tissues and mounting films is that films do not ‘breathe’. Therefore we recommend that this film is pierced with a piercing tool prior to use. The product itself is formed from a clear central carrier film, which is coated on both sides with strong, heat activated adhesive. Each adhesive layer is then protected by a grid marked release paper. The two separate release papers mean that this adhesive can be rolled out on the work bench and simply cut to the correct size for each mounting job.

HEAT ACTIVATED LAMINATION FILMS The Hot Press™ range of heat activated or “hot” lamination films are often simply referred to as “heatseal” films and they are widely regarded as the industry standard for heated press print finishing. All our heatseal films are manufactured by Hot Press™ in their factory in Bristol UK and contain UV inhibitors in both the film and the adhesive. This stops the films from turning yellow or becoming brittle over time. This attention to detail has the beneficial side effect of increasing the fade resistance of the artwork underneath. Heatseal films are incredibly durable, easy to keep clean and come in a variety of popular finishes.

ArtShield™ UV GLOSS (LUSTRE) 50μ

ArtShield™ UV SATIN MATT 50μ

Heat Activated Lamination Films

This is the most popular heatseal laminate. This film offers a unique finish that conforms to the surface it is pressed against (under heat and vacuum). The normal result is a very rich lustre finish, which is achieved by pressing the film against the surface of a foam blanket in the Hot Press. This standard finish is very reminiscent of the lustre texture found on photographic papers. To change the finished texture, the artwork can be re-pressed against other textured or smooth surfaces to give an almost limitless choice of finishes, from a single roll of film. This film can also be used as a glossy top coating when prints are bonded to canvas or printed inkjet canvases are laminated.

The Overall finish of this film, once processed, is a stippled sheen effect. This film is often used to laminate posters and prints, as its subtle finish closely mimics that of the original printed piece. That satin matt finish reduces glare, but does not reduce contrast, as the film is relatively thin. This film can also be used as a satin top coating when prints are bonded to canvas or printed inkjet canvases are laminated.

ArtShield™ UV FULL MATT 75μ

ArtShield™ UV FINE LINEN 90μ

This film is characterised by a full matt finish that completely eliminates reflections. It also offers additional UV protection when used behind glass, but is almost invisible. Full matt film is most often used where lighting is unpredictable and uncontrollable, such as exhibition halls and other public areas. The heat applied during processing will give the matt film a stippled and very scuff resistant surface. This film can also be used as a matt top coating when prints are bonded to canvas or printed inkjet canvases are laminated.

This delicate linen textured laminate is the finest of the three fabric textures in our heatseal range. It is often specified by photographers wishing to impart a subtle yet decorative finish to their work. It is non reflective and quite scuff resistant making it ideal for wall prints in the home or for display. It is also useful for disguising minor creases and cracks in prints and posters.

ArtShield™ UV COARSE LINEN 90μ This film displays a mid gauge fabric texture resembling rough cotton or Hessian. It is commonly used on larger format artwork where the finer finish maybe lost. The rougher gauge of this film is capable of hiding larger imperfections in prints and posters. Like most textured heatseals it is quite scuff resistant.

ArtShield™ UV SAND TEXTURE 90μ This non reflective film is ideal for graphics that will be subjected to prolonged exposure in public places, such as restaurants, cafes, pubs and hotels. It displays a pleasing sandy texture that is also very scuff resistant. Due to its tough nature, sand texture is an ideal surface coating for decorative place mats and coasters.

ArtShield™ UV CANVASTEX™ 190μ This is a very heavy gauge fabric texture reminiscent of real canvas. Canvastex is a good alternative to either printing to, or indeed mounting on, real canvas. The use of less expensive media and less ink make this product a cost effective alternative to more expensive printable canvases. Canvastex is very durable and like all heatseals, easy to clean, making it ideal for work that is on show in public areas. Canvastex creates the illusion that the image has been printed onto canvas but is much tougher and easier to maintain. Canvastex is well suited to photographic portraiture, landscapes and many kinds of artwork that simulate paintings, both traditional and modern. Please note... It is always advisable to pre-treat a new sheet of foam before using it on any work. All foam contains fire retardants and these activate when the foam is initially heated. New foam needs to be heat conditioned in the press under pressure for a period of time to ‘cook’ it in to a ‘flat shape’. Failure to condition your foam can lead to invisible memory marks being embedded into the foam’s surface. These can then show up on subsequent jobs as ‘ghost’ marks. If you would like more information on preventing this please feel free to contact us.

MOUNTING CANVASES Though inkjet canvas media has become very popular in the last few years for producing artwork that resembles paintings, many people still prefer the look and feel of an image that has been bonded to real canvas. These canvases are much heavier and have much bigger weave patterns than inkjet canvas media, leading to images with lots of impact. Canvas bonding is a heat process and requires a Hot Press™.

ADHESIVE COATED CREAM CANVASES

STRETCHER BARS

These are heavy duty cream cotton based fabrics, which are used as the base for canvas bonded photographs and prints. They are suitable for stretching images around stretcher frames. Three styles are available, each with a unique appearance. The MODERN variant offers a very regular weave structure that is quite open and imparts a deep line pattern. The COARSE variant is more irregular in its weave pattern, with a definite slub to the threads, producing a heavy impression. The TRADITIONAL variant also has a slub pattern, but with a tighter ‘closed’ weave. This version imparts a softer, though still distinct impression. Each version is precoated with a very strong, heat activated, clear adhesive. The addition of this coating means that you do not need to buy a separate roll of dry mount film to complete the process. Stretcher bars, as their name implies, are used to make up frames for canvases to be stretched around. They are sold individually, but you will need pairs to make up your frames. They are 41mm across the face and feature a ‘lip’ which holds canvas above the face of the stretcher. The ends of the bars are ‘haunched’ for easy interlocking and come supplied with wedges for tightening off your finished canvas. Stretcher bars are 16mm high, including the edge lip. MOUNTING BOARDS Hot Press adhesives will adhere to many kinds of boards. For the best dry mounting results however, we recommend using boards that have been developed with dry mounting in mind. Wessex Pictures offer a massive range of board types including over sized boards and popular cut sizes.

BOX BOARD

WHITE DISPLAY BOARD

If you are looking to ‘stiffen’ a piece of artwork, rather than actually mount it to a ‘rigid’ board then box board is the ideal solution. At just 600μ thick, box board is tough enough to reinforce your work without adding too much thickness or weight. It has a clay coated surface for good adhesion as well as being super smooth and pH neutral.

Code

BB1

Box Board 600 micron 815mm x 1220mm (32” x 44”)

This popular board has won a multitude of fans in recent years. White Display Board is a 2000μ board with a very dense core. Unlike many mount boards, which are softer and more open structured, White Display Board does not readily absorb moisture. Additionally the core is smoother than ordinary pulp boards, reducing the effect of ‘orange peel’ on glossy artwork. The clay coated, high white board liners act as a good key for adhesives and also help repel moisture. White Display Board is also porous, which is an added advantage when using a vacuum press. White Display Board is a pH neutral product and priced competitively for such a specialised product.

TOOLS OF THE TRADE They say a craftsman is only as good as his tools. So we have put together a comprehensive range of finishing tools and accessories that are designed to help you achieve a professional finish on all your mounting and laminating work.

PIERCING TOOL

An electrically heated hand iron with a small precision tip that delivers a pre set amount of heat in a small area. Tacking irons are very useful for fixing dry mount tissue to the back of a print and or board, prior to activation in a press. The tacking iron allows precision trimming and positioning of tissue and artwork on complex jobs. A basic stand for holding the iron safely whilst it is hot is also available.

These precision engineered rollers are specially designed to perforate or ‘pierce’ heat activated mount films and PVC heatseal films. This is to allow air to pass through the films during processing in a Hot Press. Though most of our films come pre-pierced as standard, dry mount film – clear requires hand perforation, as does the very thick canvastex heatseal. The piercing tool has over 100 very sharp spikes that are used to create the pin sized holes required for air to escape during the mounting and laminating process.

Cutting mats are an essential part of any print finishing workshop. Most suppliers only offer a basic choice, but we offer two grades STANDARD and PROFESSIONAL. Our standard grade mats come in a range of sizes and are designed for light trimming and cutting. They have a basic self-healing surface and have grid lines on both sides – to aid trimming.

PROFESSIONAL CUTTING MATS Unlike STANDARD cutting mats, our PROFESSIONAL mats are of an industrial grade and feature a tri-layered, self-healing surface. This is designed to offer the ultimate clean, smooth and flat cutting surface. They come in a range of sizes and are ideal for covering all of your work benches. They feature an anti-slip surface and help keep cutting tools and piercing tools sharp. They are also double-sided, for extra longevity. Only our smallest cutting mat has any gridlines, as most ‘large format’ workers tend to prefer working without them.

They are comfortable in the hand, pocket sized, feature a blade snapping clip and most importantly cut straight and evenly every time. We offer both STANDARD and HEAVY DUTY versions. The standard knife is the most popular and uses 9mm blades. The heavy duty knife is often the cutter of choice for many mounting and laminating professionals, this uses the tougher 18mm blades. These knives are perfect for cutting all kinds of boards, from White Display Board and Foam Centred Board to Foamex and even thinner MDF panels. Replacement blades are fast and easy to fit.

TAC CLOTHS Not so much a tool but a real workshop essential - these soft and slightly tacky cloths are great for cleaning work surfaces, machinery, boards and your artwork, prior to mounting or laminating. Please do not confuse them with other inferior ‘tack rags’ which can leave a nasty residue on your important work. Tac cloths work by removing dirt, rather than just moving it around. They are also great for removing dust from glass, MDF, Perspex and mounting boards, prior to assembling picture frames. Each individual cloth is good for hundreds of wipes and its special coating is suitable for cleaning dust and debris from most kinds of print media.

FINISHING TOUCHES Many mounted and / or laminated images eventually end up in a frame, so whether you are making your own frames or buying frame rims you need to make sure that the back of the job looks as good as the front. Wessex Pictures have a massive range of framing sundries in our main catalogue, but here are just a few that will have mass appeal to anyone in the print finishing sector.

GLASS CLEANER

POINT GUNS

If you are framing an image behind glass it is very important to make sure that the inner surface of the glass is clean before assembling the finished frame. Wessex Pictures own brand glass cleaner gives a smear free finish and is suitable for use on all types of glass. Spray sparingly for the best results, as a little goes a long way. Wessex glass cleaner is also ideal for keeping the lid of your Hot Press in tip top condition.

To secure your finished work into a frame the use of a point gun is the fastest, safest and strongest way to work. We offer three types of gun as follows:

Framemaster Gun This gun fires the rigid ‘framers’ points which are 16mm long. With your mounted work inserted into your frame, simply place the gun flat on the back of your finished panel and push it snug with the inner edge of the frame. Then simply pull the trigger to push a point securely into the frame. A spacing of 8cm to 12cm between points should be enough to secure your work in place – but you can always add more if required. Additionally by reversing the magazine in this model you can fire the smaller ‘glaziers’ points which are just 8mm long.

Fleximaster Gun

BROWN MASKING TAPE

This gun fires the softer ‘flexi’ points which are 15mm long. As the name suggests, ‘flexi’ points can be fixed in the same way as rigid ‘framers’ points - but can also be bent back if you want to remove and change the image in the frame at some point in the future.

With your work securely inside a frame you will want to keep dust and dirt out, but also make sure the frame looks neat and tidy. Brown masking tape is the usual option for this job. It is self adhesive, flexible and easy to work with. It offers an attractive finish and is cost effective. This product comes in a variety of widths and the rolls are 50M (164’) long.

Multimaster Gun This gun fires the unique and bendable ‘multi’ points which are 13mm long and have a 4.5mm round hole on their exposed face. These points can be used a little bit like a ‘flexi’ point, in that they are bendable, but they come into their own when the hole is used to screw things to the frame. Frame rims can be layered one inside the other to form more intricate designs.

Wessex Pictures carry a huge variety of ‘framing’ tapes so please contact your local branch for more details and prices.

SWEPT FRAMES These are very traditional and ornate frames with ‘plaster’ ornamentation on the corners and edges. There is a ‘twist’ though – with two new colours BLACK and WHITE added to the more conventional WALNUT and GOLD versions. These new colours are very popular for modern looking images. Swept frames are supplied as a ‘rim only’ which makes them perfect for mounted and laminated images. They also look great with canvas prints.

Though mounted and laminated work can be very strong and tough it is always advisable to make sure that you have packed it well. Even if your customer is going to collect their work – they still need to get it home in perfect condition. We offer a full range of packaging supplies to cover your every need.

SHRINK WRAP SYSTEM

Packaging Materials

Shrink wrapping your jobs looks ‘professional’ and makes a lot of sense. It minimises the chances of your work being damaged by everything from grubby fingers to dust and dirt or even rain or dampness. Our bench top shrink wrapper has everything you need to shrink wrap images up to approximately 30” x 40” wide. The all in one unit comes with a hot air gun and gun stand. There is a roll holder and the unit seals and cuts the film neatly. The heat can be varied by a simple dial control.

ANDY WRAP SYSTEM

BROWN WRAPPING PAPER

You may well have seen people using these and thought, “that’s a nice and easy way to wrap things up without sticky tape”. The Andy Wrap system comprises a reusable handle and your first ten rolls of film. Each roll of film is 150M long and made from thin plastic which only sticks to itself and not your work.

A traditional and very cost effective way of wrapping your finished work, prior to collection or shipping. It can also be used to line the back of framed work – as often seen in the USA.

Terms and Conditions

when impact is everything

48 www.wessexpictures.com • 01590 681681

2. THE CONTRACT 2.1 These Conditions apply to the contract between you and us for the sale of the Goods (Contract) to the exclusion of any other implied term that you seek to impose or incorporate. 2.2 The order for the Goods (Order) constitutes an offer by you to purchase the Goods in accord-ance with these Conditions. You are responsible for ensuring that any applicable specification (Specification) submitted by you is complete and accurate. 2.3 The Order shall only be deemed to be accepted when we issue a written acceptance of the Order, at which point the Contract shall come into existence. 2.4 The Contract constitutes the entire agreement between the parties. You acknowledge that you have not relied on any statement, promise or representation made or given by or on behalf of us which is not set out in the Contract. 2.5 Any samples, drawings, descriptive matter, or advertising produced by us and any descriptions or illustrations contained in our catalogues or brochures are produced for the sole purpose of giving an approximate idea of the Goods described in them. They shall not form part of the Contract or have any contractual force. 2.6 We reserve the right to amend the Specification if required by any applicable statutory or regula-tory requirements. 3. PRICE AND DELIVERY COSTS 3.1 Whilst prices are set out in our price guide these are indicative only and shall not constitute an offer. Price increases are sometimes unavoidable after a price guide has been printed. The price invoiced will therefore be the price of the Goods as at the time of despatch. We recommend that you telephone to confirm current prices and/or check our website, if this is an important factor. 3.2 Prices are stated in pounds sterling and are exclusive of the costs and charges of packaging, insurance and transport of the Goods, which shall be invoiced to you. 3.3 The minimum Order value excluding VAT and delivery charges (including back orders) is £15.00 and delivery charges start at £7.50. 3.4 For deliveries in the UK mainland (exc. N.Ireland, C.Islands, I.O.W., Scotland & Scottish highlands) – free delivery on orders over £75.00. 3.5 For deliveries to N.Ireland, C.Islands, I.O.W., Scotland & Scottish highlands – free delivery on orders over £250.00 exc. VAT 3.6 Orders not reaching the carriage paid amount – minimum carriage charge £7.50 3.7 Delivery surcharges: 24 hour - £12.50. Before noon - £19.00. 3.8 If you are ordering large quantities of Goods, discount may be available on request. 3.9 The price of the Goods is exclusive of VAT, which will be calculated at the appropriate rate on the total price for the Goods after all discounts have been deducted. 4. PAYMENT 4.1 Payment must be received immediately on delivery. 4.2. For account customers only, invoices must be paid in full and cleared funds within 30 days of the date of the invoice (unless we agree otherwise) by cash, cheque, most credit cards, or BACS (by prior arrangement). 4.3 Time of payment is of the essence and a represented and returned cheque will carry an administrative fee of £15.00. 4.4 If you fail to make any payment due to us under the Contract by the due date for payment (Due Date), then you shall pay interest on the overdue amount at the rate of 5% per annum above HSBC Bank’s base rate from time to time. Such interest shall accrue on a daily basis from the Due Date until the date of actual payment of the overdue amount, whether before or after judgment. You shall pay the interest together with the overdue amount. 4.5 You shall pay all amounts due under the Contract in full without any deduction or withholding except as required by law and you shall not be entitled to assert any credit, set-off or counterclaim against us in order to justify withholding payment of any such amount in whole or in part. We may at any time, without limiting any other rights or remedies we may have, set off any amount owing to us by you against any amount payable by us to you. 4.6 If you wish to open a credit account you must supply one bankers’ reference and two trade references (from within the framing industry). We may undertake a search with a credit reference agency before providing credit facilities. 5. DELIVERY 5.1 Delivery will have been deemed to have been effected when the goods leave our premises or the premises of our suppliers when the goods are delivered direct from our suppliers. 5.2 Any time or date for delivery by us is given in good faith but is an estimate only and no liability will be accepted for any loss whatsoever suffered or caused through late delivery or non-delivery. 5.3 Orders using the 24 hour or before noon service must be advised by 12.00 noon on the day of order placement. 5.4 Any back orders under £30.00 will be sent with your next carriage paid order. 5.5 Delivery of the Goods shall be completed on the Goods’ arrival at the Delivery Location. 5.6 Any dates quoted for delivery are approximate only, and the time of delivery is not of the es-sence. 5.7 We shall have no liability for any failure to deliver the Goods, or any delay in delivery, to the extent that such failure or delay is caused by an event of Force Majeure or your failure to provide we with adequate delivery instructions or any other instructions that are relevant to the supply of the Goods. 5.8 If within 21 business days of us having notified you that the Goods were ready for delivery, you have not taken or accepted delivery of them, we may resell or otherwise dispose of part or all of the Goods and, after deducting reasonable storage and selling costs, account to you for any excess over the price of the Goods or charge you for any shortfall below the price of the Goods. 5.9 We may deliver the Goods by instalments, which shall be invoiced and paid for separately. Each instalment shall constitute a separate Contract. Any delay in delivery or defect in an instalment shall not entitle you to cancel any other instalment. 5.10 Notification of non-delivery must be made by you within 7 days of receipt by you of our invoice. 6. TITLE AND RISK 6.1 The risk in the Goods passes to you upon delivery. 6.2 Ownership of the Goods shall remain with us until we receive all sums due to us in full and cleared funds. 6.3 Until title to the Goods has passed to you, you shall: 6.3.1 hold the Goods on a fiduciary basis as our bailee; 6.3.2 store the Goods separately from all other goods held by you so that they remain readily identifiable as our property; 6.3.3 not remove, deface or obscure any identifying mark or packaging on or relating to the Goods; 6.3.4 maintain the Goods in satisfactory condition and keep them insured against all risks for their full price from the date of delivery; 6.3.5 notify us immediately if you become subject to any of the events listed in clause 9.2; and 6.3.6 give us such information relating to the Goods as we may require from time to time, but you may resell or use the Goods in the ordinary course of your business. 6.4 We may exercise our right to recover goods which we retain title to if payment is not received by the Due Date or you become subject to (or we reasonably believe that you are about to become subject to) any of the events listed in clause 9.2. We may enter your premises or the premises of any third party where the Goods are stored for the purposes of recovering the Goods. 7. INSPECTION AND DEFECTIVE GOODS 7.1 You are responsible for inspecting the Goods on delivery and we shall be under no liability for short deliveries, defective or damaged goods that would be apparent on careful inspection at the time of delivery. 7.2 You must give written notice within 3 days from the date of actual delivery of the Goods if there is any shortage of the Goods ordered or if the Goods are damaged or defective, failing which the Goods shall be deemed to have been delivered undamaged, without defect and in accordance with the Order. 7.3 On receipt of the notice referred to in clause 7.2 above, you shall allow us a reasonable opportunity to inspect the Goods before you use them. 7.4 In the event of a short delivery, you shall not be entitled to reject the Goods but shall accept the Goods as part performance of the Order, following which we shall deliver the missing Goods. 7.5 In the event that the Goods are defective and such defect has been caused by faulty design,

workmanship or materials, or the Goods are damaged prior to you receiving them, we will, at our option, either repair or replace the Goods or provide a refund (if payment for the Goods has been received). 7.6 Please note that we do not accept mitred lengths of moulding or cut mounts for credit. 8. CANCELLATION AND RETURN 8.1 We supply goods to trade customers only, acting in the course of their business. You do not therefore have the right to rely on the cancellation provisions of The Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations 2000. 8.2 We may, at our absolute discretion, agree for an Order to be cancelled but in doing so, will seek to recover from you all costs, expenses and losses incurred as a result of such cancellation. 8.3 If Goods are being returned, with the exception of returnable empties, you must obtain returns authorisation from one of our authorised managers. 9. TERMINATION 9.1 If you become subject to any of the events listed in clause 9.2, or we reasonably believe that you are about to become subject to any of them and notify you accordingly, then, without limiting any other right or remedy available to us, we may cancel or suspend all further deliveries under the Contract or under any other contract between you and us without incurring any liability to you, and all outstanding sums in respect of Goods delivered to you shall become immediately due. 9.2 For the purposes of clause 9.1, the relevant events are: 9.2.1 you suspend, or threaten to suspend, payment of your debts, or are unable to pay your debts as they fall due or you admit inability to pay those debts, or (being a company) you are deemed unable to pay your debts within the meaning of section 123 of the Insolvency Act 1986, or (being an individual) are deemed either unable to pay your debts or as having no reasonable prospect of so doing, in either case, within the meaning of section 268 of the Insolvency Act 1986, or (being a partnership) have any partner to whom any of the foregoing apply; 9.2.2 (being a company) a petition is filed, a notice is given, a resolution is passed, or an order is made, for or in connection with the winding up of the company or an application is made to court, or an order is made, for the appointment of an administrator or if a notice of intention to appoint an administrator is given or if an administrator is appointed; 9.2.3 (being an individual) you are the subject of a bankruptcy petition or order, you die or, by reason of illness or incapacity (whether mental or physical), are incapable of managing your own affairs or become a patient under any mental health legislation; or 9.2.4 you suspend, threaten to suspend, cease or threaten to cease to carry on all or substan-tially the whole of your business. 9.3 Termination of the Contract, however arising, shall not affect any of the parties’ rights and remedies that have accrued as at termination. Clauses which expressly or by implication survive termination of the Contract shall continue in full force and effect. 9.4 If you fail to pay any sum owing to us on the Due Date, all sums outstanding will become due and payable and without prejudice to any other rights, we may at our option either withhold further deliveries or cancel the Contract. 10. LIMITATION OF LIABILITY 10.1 Nothing in these Conditions shall limit or exclude our liability for: (a) death or personal injury caused by our negligence, or the negligence of our employees, agents or subcontractors (as applicable); (b) fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation; (c) breach of the terms implied by section 12 of the Sale of Goods Act 1979; or (d) defective products under the Consumer Protection Act 1987. 10.2 Subject to clause 10.1: (a) we shall under no circumstances whatever be liable to you, whether in contract, tort (including negligence), breach of statutory duty, or otherwise, for any loss of profit, or any indirect or consequential loss arising under or in connection with the Contract; and (b) our total liability to you in respect of all other losses arising under or in connection with the Contract, whether in contract, tort (including negligence), breach of statutory duty, or otherwise, shall in no circumstances exceed the price of the Goods. 10.3 Where manufacturer of the Goods has limited or excluded their liability in respect of the Goods, the same limitation or exclusion shall apply to our liability on the sale of those Goods. 11. ASSIGNMENT AND SUBCONTRACTING 11.1 We may at any time assign, transfer, charge, subcontract or deal in any other manner with all or any of our rights or obligations under the Contract. 11.2 You may not assign, transfer, charge, subcontract or deal in any other manner with all or any of your rights or obligations under the Contract without our prior written consent. 12. REPRESENTATIONS 12.1 Whilst we take every care in the preparation of literature relating to the goods these documents are for the Customers general guidance only and the particulars contained in any literature prepared or published by us shall not constitute representation by us and we shall not be bound by them. 12.2 None of our employees or agents have the power to vary the terms of these Conditions orally or to make representations or promises about the goods. 13. FORCE MAJEURE 13.1 We shall not be under any liability for any failure to perform any of our obligations due to events or circumstances outside our reasonable control. 14. NOTICES 14.1 Any notice or other communication given to a party under or in connection with the Contract shall be in writing, addressed to that party at its registered office (if it is a company) or its princi-pal place of business (in any other case) or such other address as that party may have specified to the other party in writing in accordance with this clause, and shall be delivered personally, sent by pre-paid first class post, recorded delivery, commercial courier, fax. 14.2 A notice or other communication shall be deemed to have been received: if delivered personally, when left at the address referred to in clause 13.1; if sent by pre-paid first class post or recorded delivery, at 9.00am on the second business day after posting; if delivered by com-mercial courier, on the date and at the time that the courier’s delivery receipt is signed; or, if sent by fax, one business day after transmission. 14.3 The provisions of this clause shall not apply to the service of any proceedings or other documents in any legal action. 15. SEVERANCE 15.1 If any court or competent authority finds that any provision of the Contract (or part of any provision) is invalid, illegal or unenforceable, that provision or part-provision shall, to the extent required, be deemed to be deleted, and the validity and enforceability of the other provisions of the Contract shall not be affected. 15.2 If any invalid, unenforceable or illegal provision of the Contract would be valid, enforceable and legal if some part of it were deleted, the provision shall apply with the minimum modification necessary to make it legal, valid and enforceable. 16. WAIVER 16.1 A waiver of any right or remedy under the Contract is only effective if given in writing and shall not be deemed a waiver of any subsequent breach or default. No failure or delay by a party to exercise any right or remedy provided under the Contract or by law shall constitute a waiver of that or any other right or remedy, nor shall it preclude or restrict the further exercise of that or any other right or remedy. No single or partial exercise of such right or remedy shall preclude or restrict the further exercise of that or any other right or remedy. 17. THIRD PARTY RIGHTS 17.1 A person who is not a party to the Contract shall not have any rights under or in connection with it. 18. VARIATION 18.1 Except as set out in these Conditions, any variation to the Contract, including the introduction of any additional terms and conditions, shall only be binding when agreed by us in writing. 19.
