ATHLETIC HIGHLIGHTS

SIX CHANTICLEER STANDOUTS DRAFTED BY PROFESSIONAL FRANCHISES Six of the biggest names synonymous with Chanticleer success over the past several seasons saw their childhood dreams become a reality as they were selected by franchises in the MLS, NFL and MLB drafts. Midfielder PEDRO RIBEIRO was selected by the Philadelphia Union in the first round (15th overall) of the 2014 MLS SuperDraft. Running back LORENZO TALIAFERRO was selected in the fourth round (138th overall) by the Baltimore Ravens, and wide receiver MATT HAZEL was taken in the sixth round (190th overall) by the Miami Dolphins in the 2014 NFL Draft. Outfielder COLIN HERING was drafted in the 10th round (309th overall) by the Los Angles Dodgers, BEN SMITH was selected by the Houston Astros in the 17th round (496th overall), while TYLER HERB was chosen by the Seattle Mariners in the 29th round (861st overall) in the 2014 MLB First Year Player Draft.

Ribeiro collected a plethora of national awards in 2013 after leading the Chanticleers to a NCAAhigh 19-win season that included Coastal’s second straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament’s Third Round. The dominating midfielder paced the 2013 Chanticleers to a Big South regular season and tournament championship, while also earning the league’s Attacking Player of the Year and AllAmerican honors.

Taliaferro was a finalist for the 2013 Walter Payton Award, selected to play in the 2014 Senior Bowl and named the 2013 Big South Offensive Player of the Year after having a record- setting senior campaign. He was also named to four All-American teams and was the Big South Offensive Player of the Week a record-tying five times.

Hazel, a three-time AllBig South selection, set Coastal Carolina records for single-season and career receptions and became just the third Chanticleer to earn an invitation to the prestigious East-West Shrine Game. For his career, Hazel caught a CCU record 183 passes for 2,553 yards and set a CCU record by catching 3.73 passes per game for his career.

Hering played two seasons with the Chants, spending his first two seasons at Bellevue College. He played in 113 games at Coastal and posted a .257 career batting average with 43 runs scored, 40 RBI, 10 doubles, one triple, four home runs, 17 stolen bases and eight outfield assists. He ended his twoyear career by reaching base safely in 86 of his 111 games.

Smith started and played in six games this season before suffering a season-ending injury. In the preseason, he was listed as one of the top 51 college players in the nation by Baseball America and CollegeBaseballDaily.com. Prior to his injury, Smith was among the NCAA top 10 in strikeouts, fanning 39 batters in 28.2 innings.

Herb ended his impressive Chanticleer career with a 22-9 record - including an 11-3 mark in Big South play - and 3.40 ERA in 61 games (46 starts). He pitched 272.2 innings and struck out 210. His career ERA is 15th on the CCU Division I list, and his 22 wins rank 13th all-time, while his 46 starts rank sixth, his 272.2 innings pitched ranks 13th and his 201 strikeouts ranks 13th.
