Redesigning Mao "

I

n a fun twist Architecture students

from the USC School of Architecture were presented with the peculiar challenge of creating a Mao jacket using unconventional materials. The idea was thought up by associate professor in p ra c t i c e Le e S ch u y le r Olvera, as a way to get his students to work outside the box. The result, a staggeringly beautiful and technical collection of jackets all wearable and all made of unusual materials ranging from school erasers to thumbtacks. The concept behind the assignment itself is to force students into the realm of the unfamiliar using materials they have never used in a field (clothing) they are unfamiliar with. Much like fashion, architects need to think about how their work exists in space and like fashion architecture is made

with a use and purpose. The ironic twist of the use of the iconic Mao jacket as a subject adds humorous connotations to the pieces. In an interview by Guy Horton, when asked the question about the status quo of architecture he responded with “don’t be satisfied with just doing things mechanically or fitting in. Architecture is about crafted materiality and space. I want the students to get a sense of being creative makers and designers, not just technicians. The jacket, like architectural space, has to perform. It can’t be sculpture. It’s a setting for things to happen”. The above photo depicts Calvin Lee’s The Ghost of Mao jacket made completely of crocheted electronic wires. The result is an ephemeral creation that is hauntingly beautiful. The glamour and breathtaking architecture of James's ball gowns are found inspiring and beautified with its length and texture. James gowns will include pieces of the "Clover Leaf," "Butterfly," "Tree," and "Swan" from the late 1940s and early 1950s. Analytical animations, text, x-rays, and vintage images tell the story of each gown's intricate construction and history. Make sure to visit a day in the history of modern textural fashion.

From The Base Up What the headquarters say about the brand By, Brittany Morrow

The Louis Vuitton headquarters, like the brand, stands stall and regal. Taller than any building that surrounds it, like the brand it wipes out any sort of architectural competition. White and gold, with it’s rounded top, and classic details mixed with a modern edge, the design of the headquarters building matches the design of its bags and all other offerings. While most of it’s major competitors have taken very modern approaches to the design of the building Louis Vuitton stays true to itself in its classic, regal, and elegant design that never fails to incorporate a modern element here and there. Classically

15

Louis Vuitton this building can not be compared.

"

Hermes incorporates the orange it’s known for in it’s lighting design and structure. Placed delicately between two buildings it wouldn’t dare be shorter than those that surround it. it is tall and skinny and neatly resembles the cut of their bags, most iconically the Birken. The structure height versus width depicts a fashion croquis, the fashion drawings sketched for designing. With it’s height and width, clean lines, and presence the headquarters is all things Hermes and all things fashion.

"

The Prada headquarters stands tall and angular emitting a warm yellow glow mixed with greyish blue purple tones. The bubble glass catches the eye and directs it upwards to the sky, an idea brought fourth by all luxury brands; hold your head high and always strive for more. The shape suggesting the brands intention of both intentional design and constant innovation.

"

The Dior headquarters building like the brand is tall and quite nearly immaculate. With layers and layers of beautiful glass and icy blue and alternating layers with touches of warm light this building is the epitome of everything a luxury brand strives to be. Statuesque and square, the modulation in each layer directs the eye further up making the viewer wonder what’s inside. The glass itself reveal nothing the perfect marketing technique to draw you inside. More linear than their famous hour glass shape of the New Look that Dior’s known for and credited with creating this building pays homage to the brands plans for continuous modern expansion.

Mosaic of prints Inspiration

is easy to find. The buildings

around us contain shapes and features that can translate beautifully into a garment. Mixing these geometric prints is the hard part, but us stylist at Arc & platform are here to help. One of the easiest prints that are drawn from sky scrapers are stripes. Stripes are another one of those patterns that will never go out of style and should be a staple in every women’s (and men’s)

18

" by, Kalhiea Robb wardrobe. It’s a simpler print so it pairs well with anything. Personally one of mine because it’s great on its own but can be easily mixed with other colours and prints. My favourite The combination of siding, moulding, frame and windows reminds me a lot of colour blocking. This is a great print that when used in a garment, it blocks off the body by the use of colours in a very

flattering and slimming way. It is

a simple pattern that pairs well with other prints in various colours.

"

Buildings often have unique features to them. These can be curves, interesting arches, or fancy windows. Things like these are great to incorporate in different patterns and prints. For the beginners of print mixing, I would suggest sticking to simple print, like a polka dot or a stripe and build from there. This will allow you to test out your comfort zone and construct your outfits from there. Venturing in more graphic prints is the fun part. A print that combined different shapes, images and patterns completely changes the look. It creates a more interesting and bold outfit. This kind of look is great for going out with the girls, or date night. In the case where you want to mix patterns but you don’t want the outfit to be too bold, we have the

19

solution. Try sticking to alike colours, different shades of your favourite colours. Another way is to pair prints that are black and white, this makes them easier to pair with other garments, and create an outfit that isn’t as loud.

"

The important thing about this trend is to have fun with it. Clothing shouldn’t be something that is taken too seriously. Inspiration can be found from anywhere, especially the architecture that surrounds us. Buildings and fashion are so closely related and work together to produce gorgeous outfits.

What’s The Connection? by, Brittany Morrow

Fashion + Architecture

Both subjects, fashion and architecture, express an idea of personal, social, and cultural identity. Sometimes they reflect the interests of the designer or design team. For fashion, you are welcome to take it and interpret it as your own. Wear it as you will, style it to your liking. With a building, it exists as it is, it is yours to look at and interpret but mostly for you to appreciate and admire.

design the structure that will house the brand itself. This is just one of many examples of the connection. Here the architects have a chance to work and collaborate with the designers bringing their two views together. Often as one brand begins the others will follow. The prestige of a fashion brand’s headquarters will only last until its rivalled, paralleled, or topped.

Fashion, like architecture allows the viewer to perceive change in the tastes and styles of a city. Applicable to interior design as well, there are two ways in which “dressing” applies. You can dress a room just as you can dress your body. Each is a reflection of your personality, interests, and tastes. This concept was well expressed in the early Twentieth Century by German philosopher Walter Benjamin, when he wrote that the two subjects belong “in the darkness of the lived moments, to the dream consciousness of the collective.” Today this applies in that bigger and bigger groups continue to buy up prestigious fashion brands, while their teams have developed a strategic and essential marketing strategy. The show rooms look like the brands. They assume a key role in the presentation of the brand. While you can not buy anything in the showroom it stands as a representation of the brand itself and everything you wish to come. Beyond the fixtures and fabrics an architect is called upon to

Both concepts are also representations of time. Just like the other both become dated. Certain styles and details come and go from the fashions of the times. Each has classics, fads, and fashions. Both have a what comes around goes around feature of their styles and representations. As you see them you can place their decade. You recognize the trends under which they were created. They go hand in hand to represent the change that comes with the passing of time. The presentation of fashion such as the shows of fashion week would not be complete with out the surrounding atmosphere. They help to create the setting, ambience, and atmosphere. The building or structure in which the show takes place can lend its own elements to the atmosphere or be altered to be more cohesive with the theme. Ultimately one would not be complete without the other. They go hand in hand to create an exhibition and ultimately an experience.

Fashion

The beauty created when architecture and fashion collaborate and inspire. By Sarah Shaneman

“Inspiration is one of those things that comes in various forms in a multitude of

mediums

Various art forms have always inspired and collaborated with one another throughout history. You can’t walk up to an artist ask them if they’ve ever been inspired by a form of art outside their field and have them say no. Inspiration is one of those things that comes in various forms in a multitude of mediums. These collisions of projects created out of collaboration or inspiration from separate art forms can create magnificent pieces that embody the best inherent qualities from both. My personal favourite continuing mix of collaborations and inspiration is the one that occurs between architecture and fashion.

All pieces are perfectly interchangeable amongst themselves creating a versatile wardrobe that can adapt to any women’s mood. All the prints used were inspired by the recognized virtuosity of Perriand’s designs. Like most of Louis Vuitton’s collections the theme of travel is also apparent. Another example of fashion inspired by architecture is Vivien Chong’s graduating collection. A London based designer with glistening potential

Aside from all the collaborations there is still just simply inspiration. This year’s spring summer Louis Vuitton collection sees bright colours and designs inspired by the Modernist architect Charlotte Perriand. The interchangeability of the garments amongst themselves and the patterns and designs were all inspired 24

Chong studied at the renowned Central Saint Martin’s graduating with a bang. Her awe inspiring collection featured an assortment of hand pleated garments inspired by architecture. These beautiful and ephemeral pieces were based off of the works by noteworthy architect Steven Holl. The gowns reflect Halls buildings as light interacts making it seem as though light and shadow were dancing through the structures. Holls geometric architecture that tends to interact and weave through space creating almost surreal structures, are reflected in the detailed pleats of Chong’s intricate gowns. In her graduating collection entitled, Pleating Architecture, Chong masterfully plays with a variety of textiles layered in a way that creates both structure and flow. As two power houses collide in collaborations and inspiration we can be sure that continuing strands of inspired works will great us regularly as architecture and fashion work in unison. I personally can’t wait to see who will collaborate next, and who will be inspired next.

One Angel Square

England’s Green building is an impressive sight to see By Sarah Shaneman

One Angel Square built in Manchester England is an award winning building in sustainability. Designed by architects 3DReid the 328 000 sq ft building is designed to provide high quality office s p ac e i n t en ded fo r v ers at i li t y . Th e subdivided spaces within the building can be changed according to need so that the building and its spaces can stay relevant to its occupants without need for renovations. Its innovations in energy use have led to a 50% reduction in energy consumption and an 80% reduction in carbon compared to the current Cooperative Manchester complex. This makes for a 30% reduction in overall operating costs for the building. The design features a double-skinned façade that minimizes heating and cooling year round regulating temperatures and underground concrete earth tubes that provide either heating or cooling for incoming fresh air. All these tributes combined are what allow for the significant reduction in operating costs to

the building making it efficient and selfsustaining. The building itself is powered by its own CHP power plant that uses rape seed form Co-operative farms as fuel. The designers however didn’t stop their innovations there. Data from estimated temperatures in 2050 were taken into consideration so that the building would be resistant to any weather changes in the future and with increasing summer temperatures the buildings designed to become even more efficient in the heat. In front of the building is the public-realm or simply put, garden area that gives life to 75 species of plants. The Public area provides an aesthetically pleasing green space that spans 3 000 sq ft. Along with its leading strides in sustainable design the building itself features a modern slick interior and impressive exterior as well as restaurants and a café with a panoramic view of the city. With all its attributes One Angel Square is defiantly a building worthy of recognition.
