The summer holidays are one of the best times of the year for children but one of the most challenging for parents. To keep the children entertained without breaking the bank balance is no mean feat! To help you all enjoy the holidays we have put together this guide to all the local happenings which are available throughout our summer months and beyond. From cooking to arts and crafts, book reading to a good old rough and tumble … there is every activity you can think of and many of them are free! With such busy lives these days it can sometimes be difficult to find the time to sit down and do something as a family. That’s why we have included many activities which are for everyone … children, parents and grandparents alike. So rather than sitting watching the kids putting their creative skills to the test, you can join in too!

Active Soccer Active Soccer provides fun, healthy and inclusive play through accessible, progressive and structured football programmes that compliment current government initiatives for all young people aged 4–14yrs. This spirit is fostered in an environment where everyone has a chance to play and learn, regardless of skill. Active Soccer’s long-term goal is to give its participants positive experiences of sport through a fun and engaging experience that will increase their chances of a more sustainable active lifestyle. Active Soccer says, “Through our wealth of experience we have experienced at first hand the wide reaching benefits of structured physical activity on young people. “More specifically our aim is to provide an experience that will benefit the child’s mental, physical

and social health in a way that will benefit all parties involved, from parents and schools to local communities and the child themselves.” Active Soccer is committed to delivering a fun and engaging experience to young people in order to facilitate their immediate, as well as long term, participation in physical activity. They say, “To achieve this all our courses and programmes are carefully structured to provide the most effective balance between competitions and play whilst also maintaining a recognisable environment similar to lessons attended during school.”

The company looks to position itself within the already established platform from which young people can become involved in physical activity and as a result look to offer a route to the government recommended targets for leading healthy lifestyles.

Active Soccer adds, “At the heart of our company’s ethos is a commitment to the government’s target of ensuring young people receive five hours of physical activity per week in total, two of which are delivered by schools.

Family fun Children’s play centres are not normally places parents can relax but somewhere to tire children out to make bedtime easier! However, the team at Giggles Gym in Birkdale place as much focus on the adult experience as the children’s - so that everyone can enjoy playtime their way. Whether that’s dancing in the disco area with their children, catching up and sharing good quality food with friends, or just having a well earned coffee and homemade cake on the couch. They focus on the little details like a great range of magazines and free WiFi. They even have catalogues to assist your Internet shopping! And it’s reassuring to know they have been awarded the Sefton Food Hygiene 5 Star rating again. We might all be hoping for a long hot summer, but a Summer Pass at £20 for 6 weeks (48 days!) for great fun, especially if it’s raining, sounds like good value!

Free Extra Scoop of Silcock’s Homemade Italian Ice Cream for everyone The Silcock family spanning 5 generations have been in Southport since 1949 and their impressive real homemade Italian ice cream, that was introduced last year, is offering everybody a free extra scoop with the coupon below. This is a great opportunity to sample the 50 flavours in their portfolio with 30 regularly on display and rotated at given intervals. A great favourite is Bailey’s with just enough of the famous liqueur to give it a great taste but not “put you over the limit” This year for the Queens Diamond Jubilee they have created a new

champagne sorbet in the flavour of a bubbly drink so you can toast Her Majesty’s 60th anniversary in style. They are fanatical about quality and all their ice cream is made from locally sourced milk and cream and Fabri flavours made with real fruit and ingredients and it’s all made on the premises to special recipes supplied by their award-winning flavour house.

They spent many months’ trialling the different flavours getting them to the taste and quality they wanted. The New Flavours ice cream parlour can be found in Silcock’s Amusements on Nevill Street and it has an impressive range of ice cream sundaes, handmade waffles, delicious thick ice cream milkshakes made with two generous scoops of ice cream as well as tea, speciality coffee, cakes and biscuits. You can order ice cream to take home so you can carry on enjoying this delicious treat at home.

Croxteth Hall & Country Park

tourist attraction, pulling in visitors from around the North West. What’s New? New for this year is a small animal ‘petting area’, where children (under the careful supervision of the farm staff) will be able to get up close to some of the animals. Staff will be there between 2.30pm and 3.30pm to help hold the animals and answer any questions.

Now that better weather has arrived after a pretty dismal spring, crowds are flocking back to visit the City’s Parks and Greenspaces. Not a bad thing, as there is medical evidence that visiting a Park is beneficial to your health and wellbeing and is recognised as a significant ‘determinant of health’ by the NHS. In particular the ‘sleeping giant’ that is Croxteth Hall and Country Park is now fully awake for the season. It’s Liverpool’s biggest park and, with its stately home, farm, gardens and woodland, is also a significant

Feeding time is always a popular event – but morning visitors miss out, so now they can return to the farm in the same afternoon, re-present their ticket and watch feeding time at 3.45pm each day. The Farm attracts thousands of visitors every year and is especially popular for school visits. The Walled Garden is also now home to Liverpool’s famous Botanical Collection. This is one of the world’s earliest botanical collections, based on plants brought back to Liverpool from traders around the world. It was founded by the philanthropist William Roscoe in 1802. Today the collection is in a series of greenhouses in the garden, tended by a specialist gardening team employed the City’s joint venture partner Glendale Liverpool Limited. The greenhouses and Walled Garden are now open to visit all summer. Other new attractions in the Park are extra fun rides, including a ‘land train’ for visitors and pedal go-karts by the Hall.

37

Mini pedal tractors are also freely available for use by children on the farm with the purchase of a farm ticket. Sharland’s Children’s Fun Fair is also on site every weekend; and every day during the summer holidays. Please note though that these rides will not operate if the weather is bad. There are many events at Croxteth Hall and Country Park throughout the year, whatever the weather, visit www.croxteth.co.uk for details.

Throughout the summer we’ll be running events and activities celebrating some of the amazing Sefton Coast. Over the last couple of years we’ve made one of the huge prehistoric boars that left its footprints on Formby Beach 5,000 years ago, coloured in thousands of sand lizards, made birds that fly, worked with great artists and caught fascinating sea creatures. This summer we’ll be going to new venues and doing some of the favourite activities and introducing some great new ones.

Fascinating Boats The National Waterways Museum at Ellesmere Port is the place to be this summer for relaxed family fun. The museum’s open spaces, atmospheric displays, historic cottages and fascinating boats are a great place to visit – and add in a boat trip, soft play area, picnic area, café and shop and the museum is a good venue for a proper old fashioned family day out. During the summer look out for trails and other activities every day and the big summer event is Horses At Work on Sunday August 5. At this event the museum will be demonstrating horse drawn canal boats – the way all boats were powered until the modern age – as well as pony rides and other fun attractions. www.nwm.org.uk

MOVIE

Brave

The Amazing Spiderman

(Certificate PG) Brave is Pixar’s latest offering focusing around teenager Merida and is set hundreds of years ago. Three neighbouring clans decide they are going to fight for Merida’s hand in marriage but the feisty tomboy declares that if that be so she will fight for her own hand. Her mother disagrees with this and

(Certificate 12A) they fight, leading to the teenager running off and meeting a witch in the woods who casts a spell on the mother and turns her into a bear. With all the excitement and enchantment you would expect from an animated kids’ film, this is a great choice to transport you and the children into the land of magic for a few hours.

Spiderman, aka Peter Parker, is back and sets out to discover why his parents disappeared when he was a baby. Starring Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone this 3D film looks to be as promising as its predecessors with action, a love story and occasional humour all in the pot.

MOVIE Ice Age: Continental Drift

treacherous waters of the Arctic. As you would expect, the three wannabe musketeers get into all sorts of trouble along the way while meeting up with long lost relatives. Queen Latifa and Jennifer Lopez star alongside Ray Romano and Denis Leary In what could be the summer ’s smash hit.

Protect yourself This summer there are lots of reasons for all the family to get active and enjoy the outdoors. Moderate activities that make us breathe harder, but still able to talk, are good for us. When you are out and about, make sure you are staying safe in the sun. It’s strongly advised that adults wear sun protection with UV factor 15 and above, and children and babies UV factor 50. Remember to regularly top up sun protection throughout the day. It’s also important for children to cover up with a sunhat and sunglasses and babies should be shaded by a parasol. Try and stay in the shade, particularly between 11am and 3pm when the sun is at its hottest. For more health advice visit www. lookinglocal.gov.uk/nhssefton For information on being active in Sefton call Healthy Sefton on 0300 100 1000 or visit www.healthysefton.co.uk

My fostering experience Meet Alison. She was recently interviewed about her experience growing up as a foster child. Alison had this to say: “They were always there for us and did everything they could for us.” “We were looked after properly by people who genuinely cared about us and made sure we were going to school, going to Doctor’s appointments and doing all the things that kids should be doing.” “No family is perfect and things were difficult at times but my overall experience of foster care was great.” To read Alison’s interview in full, please visit: www. seftonfostering.co.uk If you think you could make a positive difference to a child or young person like Alison, call Sefton Fostering Service on 0800 923 2777 or by email: fosteringservice@sefton.gov.uk

Swimming with babies ADVERTISING FEATURE

Swimming with Babies programs and techniques are designed to create an excellent foundation that will underpin your babies future in the water. We aim to encourage baby to move freely, to install confidence and contribute to the life long bond between baby and parent. Learning to swim provides enormous social and physical benefits for a baby. It also helps enhance co-ordination and motor skills as well as improving strength, while developing important survival skills along the way. Our programs commence for babies at 8 weeks old up to 4 years of age. A lot of our babies are now swimming 5 metres independently at 2 1/2 years old without any intervention. Classes are great fun using a variety of brightly coloured equipment and various songs to encourage participation in all swimming activities. If you would like your little one to join any of the Swimming with Babies classes and introduce them to the world water and its benefits please contact Jodie on 07730 300796. at introducing the game to all School ages, we also host visits to our Driving Range from Schools in the area. Richie Benyon who has been teaching Juniors here for 14 years says “The beauty of playing golf is that it’s a game which can be enjoyed by all shapes and sizes and we find that by introducing young players we often find we encourage juniors into sport for the first time – not everyone is a honed athlete! Added to this we find parents like their children exposed to the attention to manners, behaviour and dress codes which help in their daily lives”. At SGA we have over 70 ladies learning the game too – most have decided that some coaching and a round of golf helps relieve stress and keeps a level of fitness going. Matt Chillman has helped many ladies in the area take up the game. He says,” I introduced free taster lessons for ladies in small groups many years ago and am really pleased at how many have gone to take up the game – not always to play at the top level but to enjoy the relaxation and health benefits – plus making new friends. Lots of the new ladies will give golf a try when their children are starting school for the first time – they don’t need any equipment to start with – and find a whole new social opportunity. A couple of hours spent with some coaching, 9 holes of golf and a coffee in our on site café have become quite the thing to do!” Director of Golf at Southport Golf Academy, James Carpenter, says” We welcome anyone to visit, look us over and chat about what they might like to get out of the game – our website is pretty comprehensive on what we do – but we can pretty much guarantee there is something here for even the very best handicappers to improve their game – give us a try!”

Cyber bullying Bullying is one of the oldest forms of abuse and used to be most common on a school playground. However, in the last few years, social networking websites have become more and more popular and with that, bullying has shifted to the net. Parents are sometimes unsure of how they can protect their children from the internet so here is some advice on how to prevent and stop cyber bullying.

Always be there to talk It is very difficult to prevent your children from visiting social networking sites now that it is the norm. However, making it clear to them that you are always there to talk, listen and discuss any problems can help. If your kids know that you are on their side and will support them, they will be more inclined to come and talk to you. Kids can sometimes be embarrassed, upset or too afraid to talk about being bullied, but it is very important to get them to open up.

Be familiar with social networking sites

www.stopcyberbullying.org

should be noted. Kids struggling with bullying may also lash out and become angry for no reason, channelling their upset and frustration onto close family members and friends. If your kids display any of this behaviour take them to one side and ask them what is wrong. They may not tell you straight away, but keep an eye on them and eventually they will open up.

Don't overreact This is one of the most important things to remember. If your child has come and confided in you about their bullying, do not march straight to the bullies themselves, their parents or their school.

If you have no idea how social networking sites work there is little chance you will understand the dangers and what your child is going through if they are being cyber bullied. Try to get to grips with at least one site you know your child is a member of and watch for signs of bullying. Try and involve your kids and ask them to help you learn the ropes.

First sit and discuss with your child what has happened and what they would like to happen now.

Watch for the warning signs

If you discover your child is being cyber bullied save everything you can which proves it.

When children are being bullied they can become withdrawn, depressed and may try and avoid all activities where they could come into contact with the bullies. The signs that someone is being cyber bullied are exactly the same and

Any private messages, photos, e-mails or even text messages should be saved carefully in case they need to be shown to the police, school or parents of the bullies.

It may be in the early stages and they simply wanted to flag it up so you could monitor it for them, so don't always assume drastic action is required immediately.

Keep the evidence

Otherwise everything could be denied and you have no way to prove it.

SOUTHPORT PLEASURELAND:

100 reasons to visit Southport Pleasureland has never been bigger, better and brighter and this year’s extra special as it celebrates a really big birthday. The park is 90 years old this year and all of the focus is on looking towards the next 100 years of family fun through a summer packed with treats, thrills, rides and amusements. Clean, tidy, freshly landscaped and brimming with colourful hanging baskets Pleasureland offers around 100 rides and amusements for families and groups of friends with rides for little ones and plenty to interest teenagers looking for ‘thrill’ rides.

In its fifth consecutive year of spruceup investment, the park has now confirmed its position as Southport’s anchor attraction and a big draw for families. Admission at the park remains free ensuring that a day at Pleasureland is always great value and can be tailored to everyone’s budget. The rides ‘landscape’ at the park is constantly changing so there’s always something new to try. This year’s landmark diversion is it’s new water flume ride, Piranha. The

forts, bunkers, cages and hideaways. Adults and kids 7+ can play out battles with state of the art infrared laser guns, no paint, no impact.

‘rapids’ of the park’s Piranha River Ride delivers a watery encounter with plenty of tension for thrill-seekers. For those who prefer their excitement a little drier the park has a beautifully refurbished indoor Casablanca family entertainment space. Casablanca, packed with amusements and newly available for children’s party bookings, is flexible enough to house anything from a dodgems track to a disco dancefloor. There’s a soft-play area, junior dodgems and carousels, a family restaurant and a lively games arcade. Alongside rides for all ages (height restrictions apply) sits the high octane sea-front Kart Track (drivers 1.3m+) and, after whizzing about the test track, there are plenty more thrills at Battlefield Live. Battlefield Live is Pleasureland’s massive outdoor battle arena laid out with

Rides start from just £1 and the park is open from 12 noon weekends, school and bank holidays (subject to weather conditions). Meningitis Warning Signs Seizures Occasionally, a child suffering from meningitis will have a seizure (fit). Babies and children can have seizures for many reasons and it may or not be caused by meningitis, but a seizure is a serious symptom of many conditions and diseases, so medical help should be sought immediately.

Stiffness in back or neck If you feel your baby’s or child’s neck or back appears stiff, this could be a sign of meningitis and should be checked out as soon as possible. Meningitis is a serious illness, however, if treated quickly most children make a full recovery, which is why it is so important to recognise the early warning signs and act fast. There are common signs and symptoms of meningitis in children and babies. It is important to note that not all children will develop all of these symptoms listed below and not all of the symptoms may occur at once. If your child develops one or more of these symptoms, especially a rash, seek medical help urgently.

Sudden on set of a high fever A high temperature or fever in a child can be a sign of meningitis and should be checked out by a medical professional, in babies this may occur while the hands and feet are cold.

Rash Meningitis has a characteristic rash, a cluster of pink spots under the skin that doesn’t fade when pressed under the bottom of a glass (the glass test).

A rash which doesn’t disappear under pressure may well be a meningitis rash and you should call an ambulance immediately.

Photophobia Being unable to tolerate bright lights. This is less common in younger children.

Unusual cry/moaning If your baby has an unusually high pitched cry or is constantly moaning or whimpering this could be a sign of meningitis, seek medical help as soon as possible.

Irritability or excessive sleeping Early onset of meningitis can cause your child to sleep far more than normal or to be very irritable, often crying more than normal. If your child is hard to rouse after a sleep, is floppy or becomes unresponsive you should take them straight to hospital.

Poor feeding Loss of appetite and poor feeding, can be a symptom of meningitis in babies and young children. If your child refuses to feed or appears uninterested, something could well be wrong.

For more information and to access a printable symptom checklist see NHS Choices … www.nhs.uk/conditions/Meningitis/Pages/Introduction.aspx

A furry nice picture perfect scam After piles of 50-Euro notes kept going missing from a business in Austria, imagine everyone’s surprise when the swindler was revealed to be a mouse – not a cat burglar! The firm got so sick and tired of money being stolen from one of its offices that it decided to play cat and mouse with the thief and set up a hi-tech CCTV system to catch them. After watching the video footage, bosses realised there was a furry creature in the building that had developed a taste for a rather expensive lifestyle. But the mischievous mouse didn’t care about all the cheese the cash could buy him, he simply wanted to build his own lavish lair to relax in after a hard day’s robbing. After stealing the pricey paper, the rascal rodent took it all back to his house, ripped it into tiny pieces, chewed it up and pressed it into its nest. Police had already been on the prowl to try and find the crook and had interviewed staff at the company. Baffled, they thought someone was managing to sneak into the locked room, fill up a swag bag with bills, then sneak back out again without ever getting caught. Installing the security system was the only way to trap the bandit – no one expected such a big problem to be caused by a mousy moonlighter!

It’s a Fact! Two Chilean inventors have designed a pillow for waking up deaf people. The clever invention can be set to wake sleepers up at any time, just like an alarm clock. It works by gently shaking the owner’s head by inflating and deflating. One of the inventors, said: “We can help all deaf people to be more independent with this invention.”

Joker’s Corner Ha! Ha! Ha!

Udderly surprised at the smell of cheese success Glastonbury farmer Simon Clapp has cause for celebration at the moment because his cows’ cheese has been crowned the best in the world at a recent competition. Simon reckons the team’s success is down to the soothing easylistening pop he plays at his milking parlour and thinks the tunes help calm the cows. “The music keeps the cows amused and the rotating movement combines to help keep them content,” he explains. “The more relaxed the cow the better the milk.”

When are the Why did the cook Why are teddy get arrested by best days in bears never the police? ‘Foodland’? hungry? ••• ••• ••• Because he beat Fry-day and Because they’re up an egg! always stuffed! Sundae of course!

Love packs knock-out punch

Sometimes husbands and wives fight, but one Russian couple had a full on boxing match – at their wedding ceremony! Lovebirds Nicolai Kibkalo and Natalya Karpovich hadn’t had a row and weren’t really trying to hurt each other, but seeing as they had first met in a boxing ring, they couldn’t think of a better place to celebrate their love and take t h e i r marriage vows.

Grin and wear it Toothless police officers in the Philippines are being issued with free false teeth in a bid to help them smile more. One chief superintendent explains: “Free dentures are a big boost to the morale of personnel.”

Bags of bravery from super Sizko When people are up to no good, who can you turn to for help? Your folks? The police? Helpful neighbours? Try Sizko the ‘Superdog’, who single-handedly stops crimes being committed! The sprightly golden retriever recently wowed onlookers by living up to his name and getting a stolen handbag back from a mugger, after seeing it taken and hearing calls for help. Giving the thief more than a run for his money, speedy Sizko chased him down, got his paws on the snatched bag and guarded it until the victim caught up to collect her things. Apparently Sizko is glad the mugger got ‘woof’ justice but says it wasn’t a walk in the park.

It all started when Nicolai became Natalya’s coach several years ago, helping her succeed so much that she made it as one of the top female boxers in the country. But end of round bells soon turned to wedding bells as the pair realised they had scored with each other and were so in love they were out for the count. So they got suited and booted in traditional bride and groom outfits, then donned their boxing gloves, stepped inside their ‘wedding ring’ and started throwing punches at each other until their hearts were content. The unusual event was attended by family and friends, but fellow boxers were invited too. Everyone agrees that the happy couple are a real knock-out and will never throw in the towel.
