FAMILIES Anniversary edition

WORLDWIDE

experience your world together

family adventures | small groups or build your own trip

WELCOME ... I feel privileged and proud to introduce the biggest and best family adventure brochure in the world, to mark the 10 Year Anniversary of Families Worldwide. Some of the trips we first introduced ten years ago are still running and are more popular than ever before. Head out to Morocco, Costa Rica, Thailand, Vietnam or Croatia if you haven’t yet sampled these perennial favourites. Several other new trips have been created for 2016. Join us on a new journey through the hidden gem of Slovenia’s Julian Alps, brought to my attention by my daughter Hannah who Facebooked me from her Inter-rail trip to say – “Dad, you have to do a family trip to Slovenia, it’s amazing”. She’s been on more family adventures than most so I had to sit up and listen. See page 70.

11

Several new family adventures are coming too - the Wild West in the United States and the equally wild eastern landscapes of Myanmar. You could take a family safari to see wildlife in the Serengeti in Tanzania, or to Kruger and the coast in South Africa. Europe now offers more choice than ever with Albania, Corsica, Tuscany all now featured – plus our new ‘Prague & Tatras Adventure’ which starts in Prague and then heads across Slovakia and over the Tatras mountains to Krakow in Poland. We’re still independent and very proud of that. And we’re proud of our fantastic track record (this year, over 95 per cent of our clients said they will travel with us again). We have a great team here in Hampshire who provide the very best and most flexible and accommodating service in the world of family adventure travel.

43

And finally, we’re proud to provide you with a generous ‘Loyalty Offer’ every time you re-book with Families Worldwide. Plus, if you introduce another friend or family, you’ll receive a further reward once they make a booking with us (see page 98). Yours proudly!

pL AN AHE AD The need to plan ahead for holidays suddenly comes into sharp focus when your children start school and you find out that the only dates you can travel overseas are the same as everyone else’s. Many people leave it until the last minute and are surprised to find that flights are not available and that prices usually go up the closer you get to departure. We strongly recommend that you book well ahead of your intended departure date (especially for Christmas) to make sure you can travel on the holiday you want at the price you want. See the school holiday planners below for when and where to go...

WHY FAMILIE S WORLDWiDE ? Because it’s easy! You’re busy, we know. And we are here to make booking your holiday a stress free experience. We will search for the best flights, suggest the best itineraries and ensure you have all the information you need for your holiday. We can free up your time to focus on having a great trip. That’s less stress and more time for all of you!

a personal service Our small team of family travel specialists are here to guide and inspire you from the moment you get in touch, throughout your trip and beyond. We are a small, privately owned company with a big passion for what we do. We take our level of service very seriously and will do everything we can to ensure your holiday is a complete success. We are very proud to have a very high number of families that travel with us again and again. Come and find out why.

Signature trips Our signature trips have been labelled throughout this brochure and are some of our most popular and longest running trips. If you are finding it hard to decide then our signature trips are a great place to start for an example of a classic Families Worldwide trip.

Happy & engaged children From cultural experiences, discovering the history of a destination and learning all sorts of new skills through various activities, your children will love their holiday. We have found that travelling with other children gives them confidence, independence, amazing social skills and a greater understanding of the wider world.

6

familiesworldwide.co.uk

like-minded families On our group trips you’ll most likely travel with three to six other families. On each of our trips in the brochure and online we display an age guideline, which gives an idea of the ages the trip is suitable for. We often get a mixture of ages and find that they all socialise really well. Our group sizes can vary, from one family and upwards, so please talk to us when you book to ensure your expectations are set accordingly.

Something for everyone Our trips are all designed with the family in mind – and that means coming up with something for everyone! We know how hard it is to keep everyone in the family entertained – so our trips include a variety of activities and excursions to make sure everyone’s needs are catered for. From exciting outdoor adventures to relaxing in stunning beachside lodges, we can ensure everyone comes home happy and reinvigorated after an excellent trip.

Family friendly guides Our team of local guides all over the world work tirelessly behind the scenes to make sure your holiday runs happily and smoothly. They are a cross between talking encyclopedias, nature experts, logistics professionals and children’s entertainers! From pointing out the best childfriendly eateries, to sharing their passion for their country, your guide will ensure your trip is a success. We provide support 24/7 to our guides and clients, meaning we are on hand to provide support at any time. However, it’s rare for us to hear anything, as our guides take care of the small stuff on the spot. As one client put it “It’s like having your own guardian angel!”

So much is included! With so many deals and discounts around these days it can be very difficult to judge what the real price is or what hidden extras might be added on later. Our pricing is very clear and we include much more than most people expect. The following things are included in our prices:

Please Read or write a review

¬¬¬¬¬

We invite all our travellers to share their holiday experience by posting reviews about their holiday adventures. We’d love to see your pictures here too. Click on the reviews tab on the trip pages on our website to read more, or ask us to put you in touch with someone that has travelled before to hear more.

¬ Personal service from a real person ¬ Flights and flight protection ¬ Accommodation throughout ¬ Expert leaders and guides ¬ Advice, local knowledge and guidance ¬ Transport arrangements ¬ Other families to have fun with ¬ A carefully planned family itinerary ¬ Entrance fees to sites (where included) ¬ A local contact in case you need help ¬ 24-hour emergency line, 365 days a year ¬ Loyalty discount on your next trip Altogether excellent value!

Independent (and proud of it!) We’re not owned by a big PLC or run from a country in a far-off land so we’re very connected with our customers. Our close-knit team is based in Hampshire and we are very proud of our independent ownership. You’ll find that we’re friendly, efficient and flexible. Families Worldwide is fully bonded (see page 3) through ATOL and ABTOT and we are ABTA members too, so you have complete peace of mind backed by a genuinely professional service.

Who travels with us? Whether you travel on a small group trip with up to three or four other families, or on your own tailor-made adventure, our trips are designed to help you make the most of your family time away in the destination you are visiting and provide you with a lifetime of memories. However big or small, your family is unique. Every country is unique too, which is why we offer a great deal of flexibility in our holidays.

Extended Families Our trips have something for everyone, so bring the grandparents, aunties, uncles, cousins or friends! A private trip can be tailored for you, or you can join a group trip with other families. A great way to celebrate a special occasion, such as a big birthday or even the last trip together as a family before the children fly the nest.

Single-parent families If you’re a solo parent, joining one of our trips is a great way to make sure you have plenty of support, the kids have plenty to do and there are others around to socialise with too. We get lots of single parent families travelling with us and they find it’s a great way to meet other families and get the chance to relax with their own families as well. It’s with us to take care of the logistics and itinerary, so it takes the stress out of it too.

Grown up kids? In recent years, we’ve noticed an increasing number of families with children way beyond their teens and into their twenties who still travel as a family. We call these GUFUs (Grown-Up-Family-Units). Whatever the shape and size of your family, you are welcome to join us and we’ll make sure your trip has something for you all. If your children have left school but still love travelling on family adventures, look out for our departures in June, July and September and take advantage of lower airfares at nonpeak times of year.

father son or mother daughter Working parents often miss out on time with their children as they grow up. In particular, we’ve noticed that fathers feel the need to spend some quality time with their children when they’re in their teens.

Travelling with Toddlers Many parents claim ‘toddlerdom’ to be the most demanding time to travel with children. However, children in this age category are still compact and highly portable, which means you could contemplate something really quite adventurous, such as a mule-supported trek in Morocco – carrying your child or hiring a porter.

Travelling with teens Opting to go on a group holiday with other families and their teenage children ensures that they will mix well with like-minded peers and engage with each other as equals, easily making new friends along the way. Socialising through activities provides a perfect cure for any teenage gripes, improves their self-confidence, and helps them feel more independent.

8

familiesworldwide.co.uk

Sociologists and anthropologists have noticed that today, unlike in early civilisations and tribal cultures, most rites of passage, in which father and son or mother and daughter come together in some kind of initiation, have now disappeared from western culture. These experiences, or ‘journeys’, help youngsters into adulthood and teach them to face and resolve wounds from the past, as well as inspiring, equipping and empowering them to lead successful lives as adults. We highly recommend a ‘father and son’ or ‘mother and daughter’ holiday – you’ll be glad to get them away from the TV screen and the computer, and it’s likely that you’ll both return with a new-found respect and admiration of each other, thanks to the bonds that are inevitably formed from shared experiences.

What d o we offe r? We run family adventure and activity holidays all over the world. If you’re looking for an exciting, fun and memorable holiday to take with your family, you’re in the right place. We’re passionate about creating the perfect trip for you; be it a small group trip socialising with other families or a personalised tailor-made holiday for just you and your loved ones.

Small-group trips You’ll most likely travel with between three and six other families on an itinerary designed especially for families. This is not just any other tour! We have designed our trips to limit long, boring journey times when we can, keep the group sizes small and nimble (so there’s not much waiting around for each other) and make sure you make the most of the destination you are visiting.

Accommodation options We’ve chosen amazing places for you to stay! Our trips are not a tour of generic hotels and you won’t find Sky TV in every room. We’ve hunted out places with character and charm in great locations – you’ll stay in jungle lodges, desert camps (sleep out under the stars), overnight trains and guesthouses with local hosts and excellent service. We have specified throughout our brochure where pools are available and more details can be provided upon request.

Tailor-made holidays If a group experience isn’t for you, or you want to do something completely different, then we can tailor-make an itinerary to suit your budget and requirements. Our small team of travel experts will work with you to tailor make your trip of a lifetime. This gives you ultimate flexibility to select departure dates, flights, itinerary pace and accommodation type – whether you want to camp out in the desert or enjoy more luxurious surroundings.

Swimming pools are a necessity for many families, which is why we specify in our itineraries when pools are available. Look out for the symbol alongside the relevant night stops.

Guaranteed departures If you book a group trip it will almost certainly be guaranteed from the moment you book your trip, giving you security in your holiday plans and peace of mind. Talk to us when you book.

Latin America :: Costa RIca

Sloths, surf and the stunning rainforest Avid traveller and author Rosie Millard recently went on our Active Costa Rica tour - here’s what she thought.

Costa Rica doesn’t introduce you to nature; it takes you by the hand and plunges you into it. This small Central American nation, which borders on both the Atlantic and the Pacific, famously luxuriates in not only a lush, verdant rainforest at the coast; but high on the mountains there is a cloud forest through which you can challenge yourself and fulfil your dreams, whether they be flying on a series of zip wires hundreds of feet up in the air, or white-water rafting down a wide, peppermint green river. That is after you have dangled over a canyon on a hanging bridge, taken a Tarzan swing, camped out overnight in a luxurious jungle lodge or snorkelled above shoals of fish over a coral reef. Quieter thrills include walking through clouds of butterflies, hearing a chorus of frogs or wading through rushing water on a horse. Looking up, you might see a toucan perched high above you, or a monkey swinging through the trees, her tiny baby clinging to her back. The sheer volume of animals, birds and plants in Costa Rica is astonishing. This is a nation which enjoys 35 micro-climates and an astonishing array of enchanting wildlife, from bright butterflies to adorable, peaceful sloths and the curious, creeping armadillo. This is a place which is not like anywhere else, and where you can have totally new experiences and achieve life memories with your family.

There is no other part of this vast country that

summons up images of the wild west better than the Desert Southwest. This trip takes you on a journey through time as it visits the mythical lands of the

saguaro cacti under the backdrop of classic western vistas. Look back in time to some of the oldest exposed rocks in the world at the Grand Canyon and get to know the friendly but reserved Navajos on a privately guided jeep tour and cultural exchange, where the younger members of our families will learn how to create their own sand paintings. This area also provides ample outdoor adventures, such as a float trip down the Green River (sister to the Colorado) and some unbelievable hikes through Zion National Park. the imaginations of the young and mature alike. – MATT BERNA

insight into :: africa

Life on a family safari Avid traveller and author Rosie Millard recalls her experiences on a family safari in Africa.

“I am not mistaken. Charlie is pawing the ground. His ears are flapping. His trunk is trumpeting. Charlie is a fully grown African bull elephant. He must weigh around four tons. I am sitting with my family in a jeep. It is possible that Charlie is intending to sit on our jeep. “Let’s get out of here!” squawks my husband. After what seems quite a long time, but which is probably only about five seconds, our guide calmly puts the vehicle into fast reverse. We scorch out of the terrain. Our four children look around, wild-eyed with excitement. Around us, the African bush sprawls in the heat. It’s as if we have left our living room and jumped right into the middle of a David Attenborough programme. Our trip is a heady combination of (safe) excitement, learning and spectacular sights: giraffe awkwardly bending down to drink; bushbabies, hippo and in one magical

moment, a giant herd of elephants, big and tiny, at play in a waterhole. What a wealth of knowledge we gain! After five days, our children can tell the difference between a leopard’s pawprint and a hyena’s, and know what a carmine bee-eater looks like. Furthermore, they understand that when Charlie is flapping his ears and trumpeting, it’s not really very dangerous. He’s just showing off! The sun is hot, the sea balmy, the bush full of life. There are two other families with us, and our assorted children, aged from 8-15, are fascinated by the game drives (at least two a day). The children spend hours watching one-clawed crabs, learn a bit of Swahili and experience how the African equatorial night falls like a blackout curtain. There is messing about on the beach, and time for quizzes and competitions over supper. When they get tired of the game drives, they simply fall asleep in the jeep.”

eXTEND YOUR STAY in Tanzania Why not make the most of your time with an extra few days in Tanzania?

Beaches of Zanzibar ¬ Relish the exotic white sand beaches ¬ Stay at a boutique beachfront hotel ¬ Enjoy optional water sports and excursions Zanzibar is one of those bucket list, tropical islands that you simply won’t want to leave. Unwind at our hand-picked hotel set on a tranquil beach where you can enjoy unparalleled views of the Indian Ocean. Activities available include sea kayaking, snorkelling, forest treks or simply relax with a massage in the hotel’s seafront spa. Note 3 night and 5 night extensions available, prices do not include flights or excursions.

From £399 per person for 3 nights

Spice island Escape the frenzied rush of modern life and take a step back in time on the historic Swahili and Arabic trading island of Zanzibar. Let yourself be transported to a by-gone era as your senses are assailed by the intoxicating smell of cloves carried on Frangipani-scented sea breezes. Meander down narrow winding lanes in Stone Town with your children behind donkeys and past minarets. This is not a place manicured to please a passing interest. It’s a cauldron of real life, of different peoples coming together and taking on life at a pace the heat determines. Stand next to ancient carved doorways and sip strong Arabic coffee while bartering with friendly merchants and hawkers in the hustle and bustle. Open your children’s eyes to another world steeped in ancient history and drop into 19th-century landmarks such as the House of Wonders, a former sultan’s palace. From the harbour to the fish market, through the maze of bustling streets, Stone Town needs no formal introduction, no set itinerary, it is simply there to be indulged, and indulge it you must. The Dhow Palace is set right in the heart of Stone Town and is perfectly placed for full exploration whilst remaining easy to find. Its rooms are adorned with Zanzibar style, and

there is even a pool to cool you in the midafternoon. A Swahili hour or so outside Stone Town, on the northerly tip of the island, lies Nungwi village. The Zanzibari is a small, beautiful hotel 20 minutes’ walk east of the village. It fronts the bright turquoise Indian Ocean on brilliant white beaches fringed with green palm trees swaying in the ocean breeze, and sits amidst stunning gardens, vibrant in one of the great growing climates on the planet. From here it is possible to dive, snorkel, visit turtles, frolic with dolphins and perhaps most importantly for a hotel called The Zanzibari, to meet the people. Nungwi is a fascinating place with a large boat building yard, a daily fish market and plenty of its own history hidden in the walls of the houses. Nzore, our assistant manager, is the perfect man to open the village heart to you and give you a cultural experience never to be forgotten.

adventure playground Families Worldwide’s HR Manager Sam Gold and her family travelled to Morocco which left quite an impression on the whole family!

“A horse and carriage ride to Djemma el Fna, the magical central square in Marrakech started our tour of this colourful city. The children particularly enjoyed walking through the markets, learning to bargain with the shop keepers, and saying ‘la shukran’ (no thank you, in Arabic) to the frequent requests for their attention. Simple things like the markings and signs on the road to the cobras and monkeys on display in the central square were an entirely new experience for the children. It was also very educational for them to accept and appreciate a different culture and way of life. The next day we headed up into the Atlas Mountains. All the children on the trip became friends almost instantly, and played and explored together, giving the adults some time to themselves which was a bonus we hadn’t expected! Heading up to 8,200 feet, the adults walked while the children climbed aboard their mules and enjoyed the mountainous scenery. This helped keep up the pace of the walking, and the children relished the novelty of riding the mules up the mountain paths. They all formed a close bond with their mules, a new experience, something they knew was very different from what their friends may have done during the holidays. Heading to 10,000 feet, the mules were left behind and we all walked. It was a real achievement for everyone. The scenery was

stunning, with dramatic mountain vistas, waterfalls, herds of goats and local Berbers going about their daily routine. A final day in Marrakech allowed for some last-minute shopping in the souks for souvenirs and presents to take home. The hotel had a swimming pool which was a welcome respite from the heat in Marrakech, and somewhere for the children to play with their new friends and fellow adventurers!”

insight into :: CROATIA

Happy healthy families Mark Wright and his family jetted off to Croatia for a week-long adventure and felt healthier than ever. Read on to find out why.

66

familiesworldwide.co.uk

insight into :: CROATIA

Breakfasts, lunches and

dinners were all guilt-free,

exercise-earned banquets.

“Paddling back from the mainland to the island of Lopud across a calm, turquoise sea bathed in late afternoon sunshine, I don’t think I’d ever felt healthier. We’d rounded off our spectacular ‘seafood symphony’ lunch with a couple of lazy hours taking turns with all the kids to leap off the quayside and then climb back up for more leaping or lazing in a perfect 30 degrees of summer sunshine. A few of the parents and children had wandered to some nearby gardens. A few were snorkelling nearby. Everyone looked tanned, happy and healthy. It would have been quite an extraordinary feat of effort to find anything to whinge about... After leaping and lazing, we reunited with our kayaks and got back into the semi-routine and rhythm of what we had now become accustomed to. A good meal (breakfasts, lunches and dinners were all guilt-free, exercise-earned banquets) would nearly always be followed by some informal briefing and

planning; safety gear was donned, sun-screen rubbed in and sun hats crammed on heads. Then a bit of ‘who’s paddling with who’ and off we go, back onto the blue, clear waters of the Adriatic for another foray to an island or a headland on the Dalmatian Coast and a walk, a bike ride or a paddle-board. There was an endless supply of stashed equipment that was carefully planned and planted to be there waiting for us near a suitable lagoon, a bay or a tiny fishing village and yet another great restaurant waiting for us. Most of us adventure-seekers-turned-parents who had come to Croatia with Dubrovnik in our minds and perhaps a hope that with the mix of activities there’d be something for everyone in the family to enjoy and look forward to. Old Dubrovnik, the islands and the activities all came up trumps, but the thing we took away wasn’t a trophy or a list of ticked boxes. It was a feeling of vitality and bountiful healthiness

- kayak, swim, eat, drink, bike, walk, paddle, snooze, bathe, paddle, breathe... So, paddling back towards our island base, I put a spurt of power on and found myself in a bit of a race with a shy 14-year-old who’d come out of his shell and blossomed over the week, a five-year-old who always egged his Dad on to do most of the work, and a son and daughter who looked happier and healthier than I’d seen for a long time. My advice. Go to Croatia, get active and go soon before it gets over-run. It’s a tonic for the soul and for families wanting more than just a beach holiday.”

insight into :: Winter activity trips

adventures in the snow

Ffion and her mother Heather are winter activity addicts and share their experiences here. “Imagine total silence. The kind that you can only hear because everything is covered under a thick glistening blanket of snow. As far as the eye can see, fir trees heavily laden with snow stand out starkly against the landscape. Having just enjoyed a hot chocolate, I’m warm and cosy, wrapped up in thick, soft reindeer skins snuggled up with Ffion. The reindeers paw the snow impatiently, their warm breath escaping in clouds of condensation. I listen to the singsong lilt of our guides as they chat. I’m excited. There is a butterfly flutter of anticipation in my stomach and we’re off! Our tracks cut through the virgin snow as trees fly by. Something is missing, I realise there’s no sound of motors, just sleds making that particular ‘whoosh’ sound as they slice through the snow. Suddenly we are surrounded by a vast open vista, completely white. We’re actually

82

familiesworldwide.co.uk

on top of a frozen lake. On the other side, we are guided to a tepee in the woods. We crawl into the dark cosy space around a fire and roast delicious sausages. Nothing could prepare us for the dog-sledding. It was such fun! We set off under blue skies with just the sound of the dogs panting and the swishing sound of the snow. Initially I controlled the sledge and Ffion sat in a semienclosed space. Then Ffion, a dog lover, had the experience of her life. She took over from me - which she was a bit worried about because there were so many instructions to remember - but it came so naturally and the dogs knew what they were doing. We returned exhilarated; the ride of a lifetime. And at the end we were allowed to cuddle the husky puppies!”

aDDITIONAL INF ORMATION Before your holiday, it’s worth spending time checking what is included and not included and how our prices are calculated. Please contact us if you have any questions or need further clarification.

What’s included?

Local Payment

¬ International Flights*

On just a few trips, an additional Local Payment must be paid, although we have tried to avoid this as much as possible. This is an extra payment which forms part of the price of the tour. Instead of being paid to Families Worldwide at the time of invoice, this amount is paid to your Tour Leader on arrival at the start of the trip. It should be paid in cash in the currency stated.

¬ UK departure taxes ¬ Tour leader/driver ¬ All accommodation as per itinerary ¬ Meals as per itinerary ¬ Transport as listed under each itinerary ¬ Entrance fees to included sights ¬ Tours and excursions as per itinerary

Group travel

* On ‘Flight Inclusive’ arrangements

What’s not included? Overseas departure/entry taxes, airport transfers (unless stated), excess baggage charges, porterage, insurance, passports, visas, vaccinations, optional excursions, city taxes, gratuities and any items of a personal nature.

Itineraries The holidays in this brochure use the services of many suppliers and are planned months or years in advance. Consequently, there are factors over which we have no control and which could make changes to any trip necessary. If we are aware of major changes we will always try to let you know in advance.

extension PRICES Extension prices shown are priced on the assumption that your family takes our international flights from the UK. Extension prices may sometimes be higher if you book on a Land Only basis.

Prices Prices shown in this brochure are on a per person basis, based on shared accommodation (unless stated otherwise). The Flight Inclusive prices are detailed as a guideline only, so please use them as a guide to the holiday price. Please refer to the itinerary and Trip Dossier for exact details of what is included in the price. Prices and itineraries shown for trips departing from March 2017 onwards are subject to change and confirmation with the publication of our 2017/18 brochure, due to be published September 2016.

Child prices Our prices reflect any discounts given by airlines for children under 12. There are fewer reductions on land costs due to the unpredictability of the precise make-up and size of every family, availability of rooms, etc. (See ‘Rooming’ on page 93).

Many of our trips are designed to operate as a group of families travelling together. The maximum group size varies from one trip to another but the majority average 12–16 people, sometimes up to 20 – each group is generally made up of between three and six families. Parents’ ages range from around 35–55, while kids are just about any age – most being between 8 and 12, but there are plenty of trips which suit younger children and toddlers too.

Single & sole parents Whether you’re single, or have just decided to travel without your partner, you are very welcome and would be part of any typical group. Meeting like-minded families, whether you’re single or a couple, is part of the fun of our style of travel. We usually find that within 24 hours of arrival, the kids have all gelled together to the extent that they almost function as an independent unit. That leaves the parents free to relax and keep just a watchful eye on things, rather than having to entertain constantly.

Flights Book a Flight Inclusive holiday for total confidence and financial peace of mind. Our consultants are very experienced in dealing with the complexities of airline fares and contracts and can often simplify this for you. It’ll save you time, stress and money! We have special deals with all major airlines.

Flight inclusive On each trip page we have detailed the airline we intend to use for the published itinerary. Unless stated otherwise, the prices shown include flights from the UK, either direct or via the airline’s hub, and back to the UK. Itineraries are normally based on scheduled flights, economy class seats and tour operator contract fares. The nature of tour operating means that sometimes the airline, routing, booking class and price may vary, in which case a flight supplement may be payable.

Regional Airports

Low cost airlines In Europe in particular, low cost airlines appear to offer a very economical option. We are able to book and arrange these flights for you, subject to a nominal booking fee and, by doing this as part of your travel arrangements, we can continue to offer you peace of mind and financial protection through our ATOL licence. This brings many benefits. For example, if your flight were to be delayed or cancelled and you could not join your holiday on time, we would manage the situation accordingly.

Flight Delays

On many of our trips, Families Worldwide are able to offer departures from airports throughout the UK direct to an overseas “hub” rather than having to go via London.

Please be aware that delays, either prior to your departure from the UK, en route to the starting point of your land arrangements, or on your return journey may occur.

If this is not possible then we can usually arrange domestic departures, from most UK regional airports in the UK, to connect with international scheduled flights. These are usually competitively priced and are generally booked in conjunction with the airline supplying your international flights. Due to the likelihood of changes in flight schedules, Families Worldwide will not book domestic flights that are non-refundable or non-transferable. All the flights used in our pricing are based on economy class but we also have access to competitive flight upgrades, please ask at the time of booking.

This may be as a result of one of many factors – inclement weather conditions; technical problems with aircraft; air traffic control problems; airline or airport staff strike action; last minute schedule changes; security issues or airline overbooking problems, to name a few! Each carrier has a different policy as to how these situations are dealt with, depending on the severity of the delay. Most provide meal and/or drinks vouchers, or even accommodation if the delay is substantial. Families Worldwide has no control over flight delays, the provision of vouchers or accommodation and standard airline policy applies in all cases.

Please note that flight prices and terms and conditions can vary significantly. Our consultants will advise on the best ways of securing guaranteed prices.

Fuel surcharges Due to oil price fluctuations, airlines sometimes introduce fuel surcharges. Families Worldwide reserve the right to pass on any additional costs to new and existing bookings prior to departure.

92

familiesworldwide.co.uk

Land Only If you would prefer to make your own international travel arrangements you can book any of our holidays on a ‘Land Only’ basis and then organise your own flights. This may sometimes appear to be cheaper than booking a ‘Flight Inclusive’ package. Please bear in mind, however, that if you book ‘Land Only’ it is your responsibility to ensure you arrive at the joining point of the trip in good time. No refund can be provided in respect of any unused services if you miss the start of the trip. Similarly, our contractual obligations to you cease at the end of the Land Only itinerary. So, in the rare event that you are unable to join your holiday you would not be entitled to a refund. If you decide to make your own alternative flight arrangements, we recommend that you do not purchase non-flexible connecting flight / rail / bus tickets for group trips, as these can incur penalty charges, or even total loss, in the event of a change or cancellation.

Airport transfers Unless stated on each trip page as ‘included’, airport transfers are not included in the trip price and should be requested at the time of booking. This is because families often arrive and depart on different flights and so a single group transfer can be difficult to pre-arrange. So, rather than build this cost into the selling price for everyone, we give you a choice: we are happy to arrange airport transfers for you or you can do your own thing if you prefer.

What to do next Please call us if you need more information or would like our specialists to book your flights.

Re ality che ck Given the adventurous nature of our trips, there can be cultural, geographical, climate differences and sometimes risks that you may not normally have to deal with at home. While by no means wishing to scare you, it is important that you give a moment’s thought to the following points. We have listed the recommended health requirements for the countries visited on page 94 but we are not medical experts and recommend that you consult your GP or a travel health clinic.

Cultural differences Standards of hygiene can vary enormously around the globe and while your Tour Leader will help as much as possible you will need to pay particular attention to your family’s behaviour with regard to food, water and washing. In a number of the countries we visit, transport facilities, regulations and health and safety precautions are not of the standard you would expect in the EU. While we try to ensure that transport complies with local regulations and standards this may be below that expected in the UK and we cannot always guarantee that there will be seat belts provided. We are unable to provide child car seats; responsibility for your children lies with you and not the Tour Leader who will treat them as young adults. The Tour Leader will not act as a child minder or babysitter and if you wish to opt out of an activity it is your responsibility to make arrangements for your children.

and smells may be different and they may find themselves as the centre of attention in a way not experienced before. The flip side of this is that children have a brilliant way of breaking down barriers and eliciting smiles and welcomes that sometimes can elude an adult.

Accommodation Our aim is to stay at good quality, friendly, clean and comfortable properties with local character and atmosphere. This could include anything from luxurious lodges through to mid-range hotels, pensions, guesthouses, hostels, local houses, tented camps, campsites, etc. Standards can vary considerably from one country to another and we offer a range of differing levels of sophistication so please read the brochure and Trip Dossiers carefully to choose a trip that is right for you. More often than not our clients are pleasantly surprised by the high standards of accommodation.

Above all you must be aware of the potential culture shock that children may face when visiting new countries. The heat, sounds

Rooming Rooming is generally organised on a twin share basis, but where available, triple or family rooms will be used. Sometimes we are able to provide a twin/double room with an extra bed, although we cannot always guarantee this. As there are many varying shapes and sizes of families (the combinations are almost limitless!) it is impossible to predict the exact rooming arrangements for every hotel on every tour. We room each family as best we can knowing that you want to be close to your children and share adjoining rooms in your hotel where possible. Occasionally, multi-share or dormitory-style accommodation will be used where you would be sharing with other families. Single room accommodation is available at many hotels and lodges and this is subject to a single room supplement. Otherwise if there are an odd number of you travelling and we are unable to accommodate you in a triple room, we will ‘room’ you with a fellow adult member from the group of the same sex.

PLEASE NOTE: Full details of the cover provided are shown on your policy document which will be sent to you upon receipt of payment of premium. Please read it carefully to ensure you understand the cover provided as this insurance is being offered on a Non Advised basis from a single insurer. Should you require more information, a specimen policy can be downloaded from our website. Certain terms, conditions, exclusions and excesses apply, in particular cover is excluded for any pre-existing medical condition from which you or any person upon whom travel depends are suffering. If in doubt please contact our medical helpline on 01702 427 237. The policy document contains a 14 day Cooling Off Period and details of how to claim and who to contact in the event of a medical emergency. A surcharge may be payable in limited circumstances where certain costs increase after booking. Your contract will be with Chameleon Worldwide Travel Limited (registered in England with number: 7018224) of Long Barn South, Sutton Manor Farm, Bishops Sutton, Alresford SO24 0AA. For all bookings a binding contract between you us only comes into existence when we despatch our written confirmation of booking to you. We hold an Air Travel Organiser’s Licence issued by the Civil Aviation Authority (ATOL number 10186). When you buy an ATOL protected flight or flight inclusive holiday from us, you will receive an ATOL Certificate. This lists what is financially protected, where you can get information on what this means for you and who to contact if things go wrong. We, or the suppliers identified on your ATOL Certificate, will provide you with the services listed on the ATOL Certificate (or a suitable alternative). In some cases, where neither we nor the supplier are able to do so for reasons of insolvency, an alternative ATOL holder may provide you with services you have bought or a suitable alternative (at no extra cost to you). You agree to accept that in those circumstances the alternative ATOL holder will perform those obligations and you agree to pay any money outstanding to be paid by you under your contract to that alternative ATOL holder. However, you also agree that in some cases it will not be possible to appoint an alternative ATOL holder, in which case you will be entitled to make a claim under the ATOL scheme (or your credit card issuer where applicable). If we, or the suppliers identified on your ATOL certificate, are unable to provide the services listed (or a suitable alternative, through an alternative ATOL holder or otherwise) for reasons of insolvency, the Trustees of the Air Travel Trust may make a payment to (or confer a benefit on) you under the ATOL scheme. You agree that in return for such a payment or benefit, you assign absolutely to those Trustees any claims which you have or may have arising out of or relating to the non-provision of the services, including any claim against us, the travel agent or your credit card issuer where applicable. You also agree that any such claims may be re-assigned to another body, if that other body has paid sums you have claimed under the ATOL scheme. The flights and flight-inclusive holidays we arrange are ATOL protected providing they are made available in the UK. For further information visit the ATOL website at www.atol.org.uk. The Association of Bonded Travel Organisers Trust Limited (ABTOT) provides financial protection under the Package Travel, Package Holidays and Package Tours Regulations 1992 for Chameleon Worldwide Travel Ltd., and in the event of their insolvency, protection is provided for the following: 1. non-flight packages commencing in and returning to the UK; 2. non-flight packages commencing and returning to a country other than the UK; and 3. flight inclusive packages that commence outside of the UK, which are sold to customers outside of the UK. 1, 2 and 3 provides for a refund in the event you have not yet travelled. 1 and 3 provides for repatriation. Please note that bookings made outside the UK are only protected by ABTOT when purchased directly with Chameleon Worldwide Travel Ltd.

We are a member of ABTA (ABTA number Y0185). ABTA and ABTA members help holidaymakers to get the most from their travel and assist them when things do not go according to plan. We are obliged to maintain a high standard of service to you by ABTA’s Code of Conduct. For further information about ABTA, the Code of Conduct and the arbitration scheme available to you if you have a complaint (see clause 23 of our full Booking Conditions), contact ABTA at 30 Park Street, London, SE1 9EQ or see www.abta.com. Some of the holidays featured in this brochure require a minimum number of participants before we can operate them. The applicable minimum number depends on various factors and varies from tour to tour. If the group size drops below the minimum number, we reserve the right either to cancel or to run the trip. There is therefore no guarantee that the holiday will have more than one family participating. We promise to advise you no later than 6 weeks prior to departure if we have to cancel your holiday due to lack of numbers. Clause 5 of our full Booking Conditions will then apply. For groups, the price per person given at the time of booking is based on a particular number of participants. If the group size changes at any time prior to departure (including where confirmed participants cancel without being substituted and pay less than 100% cancellation charges), we reserve the right to re-cost the trip and the per person price. Any increase in the price will be payable by all remaining participants. The increase will not be a surcharge and accordingly will not be subject to the surcharge provision set out in clause 4 of our full Booking Conditions. All participants must be in possession of a valid passport and all visas, permits and certificates, including medical certificates required for the whole of the holiday booked. It is your responsibility to obtain these unless you are expressly advised otherwise by us. All information and advice given by us on visas, vaccinations, climate, clothing, baggage, special equipment etc. is given in good faith. The lead passenger must ensure that all participants are in possession of all necessary travel and health documents before departure. All costs incurred in obtaining such documentation must be paid by you. We regret we cannot accept any liability if you are refused entry onto any transport or into any country due to failure on your part to carry correct documentation. If you are not a British citizen or hold a non British passport, you must check passport and visa requirements with the embassy or consulate of the country(ies) to or through which you are intending to travel. If failure to have any necessary travel or other documents results in fines, surcharges or other financial penalty being imposed on us or costs incurred by us, you will be responsible for reimbursing us accordingly. We require details of the passports held by all participants no later than 6 weeks prior to departure. A full British passport usually presently takes approximately 2 to 4 weeks to obtain unless you are 16 or over and are applying for a first passport. The UK Passport Service has to confirm your identity before issuing such a passport and may ask applicants to attend an interview in order to do this. A minimum of 6 weeks should be allowed in this case. If any participant does not have a passport or will need to renew it prior to departure, they are recommended to apply at least 3 months in advance. For travel to and via the USA, every person travelling (including children) must have a visa unless they qualify for the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). Most British citizens travelling on holiday will qualify for the VWP but please see the important note below. All visitors who are eligible for the VWP must now apply for authorisation to travel to the US in advance in accordance with the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA). For authorisation to travel you must complete an online application on the ESTA website (details below) at least 72 hours before your flight to the US departs but you are recommended to apply earlier. Providing the application is accepted, you will be provided with approval via the website. Approval is usually provided very quickly but can take up to 72

hours if data needs to be checked. You should make a note of the ESTA approval number when you receive it. Please note; authorisation to travel under ESTA does not guarantee entry into the United States; that decision rests with the immigration official at the point of entry in the same way that travellers currently entering the U.S. under the Visa Waiver Program or with a visa are subject to inspection. Warning: If your passport has ever been reported lost or stolen to the authorities and then recovered, please do not attempt to use it for travel to the United States. If you input the passport details into ESTA, your application will be denied. It is your responsibility to obtain ESTA approval or a US visa if required. If you fail to obtain authorisation to travel through the ESTA website or a US visa in advance of travel, you will not be allowed on your outbound flight to the US. Full cancellation charges will then apply. The ESTA website can be found at https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta Important note: Not all British visitors to the USA will qualify for the Visa Waiver Program. You cannot apply for the VWP and will require a visa if you do not have a machine readable passport. All new style, burgundy coloured UK passports are machine readable. You will also need to apply for a visa if you have ever been arrested (even if you were not convicted of an offence) or have a criminal record of any description. Other exemptions also apply. If you are in any doubt as to whether you may require a visa, please contact the US Embassy, Consular Information Unit, 24 Grosvenor Square, London W1A 1AE or visit the website www.usembassy. org.uk before making your booking. Further information on entry requirements for the USA is available at http:// travel.state.gov. You must check entry requirements at the time of booking and in good time before departure as requirements may change. Requirements generally and for any country may change and you must check the up to date position in good time before departure with the embassy or consulate of the country(ies) you are travelling through and to. It is your responsibility to ensure you are aware of all recommended vaccinations and health precautions in good time before departure. Details are available from your GP surgery and from the National Travel Health Network and Centre www.nathnac.org. Information on health abroad is also available on www.nhs.uk/Livewell/ Travelhealth. For holidays in the EU/EEA you should obtain an EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) prior to departure from www.ehic.org.uk. An EHIC is not a substitute for travel insurance. Vaccination and other health requirements/recommendations are subject to change at any time for any destination. Please therefore check with a doctor or clinic not less than six weeks prior to departure to ensure that you have met the necessary requirements and have the applicable information. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office publishes regularly updated travel information on its website www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice which you are recommended to consult before booking and in good time before departure. In the event of any flight delay or cancellation at your UK or overseas point of departure, the airline is responsible for providing such assistance as may legally be required by the Denied Boarding Regulations. The ferry, tunnel or rail operator is similarly responsible in relation to any delayed or cancelled sea crossing or international rail departure. Except where otherwise stated in our brochure or on our website, we regret we cannot provide any assistance in such circumstances other than information and advice to the extent we are in a position to do so. The information contained in our brochure is believed correct to the best of our knowledge at the time of printing or publication. However, errors may occasionally occur and information may subsequently change. You must therefore ensure you check all details of your chosen tour (including the price) with us at the time of booking.

Family feedback We are very proud of the feedback we receive through our Post Trip Questionnaires, through online reviews on our website and in emails and letters from our customers. 95% of our customers say they will travel with Families Worldwide again!

This was an amazing trip and one of the best holidays we have ever had. Tanzania is a beautiful and friendly country and we enjoyed every minute of the experience. Saadani and Selous were both fantastic locations and we saw a great variety of wildlife. This holiday is tremendous value for money with excellent accommodation and lots of wonderful people to take care of you. We would love to do it all over again and already miss the new friends we made. And the Families Worldwide service was excellent every step of the way. Power Family, Tanzania, Swahili Coast & safari, July 2015

The Morocco Atlas Mule Train was the best family holiday we have ever had, and the look on the boys’ faces as they sat on a mule for the first time was priceless. We even found a mule shoe while walking in the mountains which now sits proudly on a shelf, a treasured memory of a great trip. Cruse Family, Morocco, Atlas Mule Train, August 2015

Fantastic trip! Great location along a beautiful river (rooms have a terrific view over the river). Great activities - full on schedule. Great local guide. Dignam Family, Croatia, River Adventure, July 2015

Thank you to Families Worldwide for your advice in preparation for the trip. Good packing lists. Good general information on Sri Lanka. Good size group (5 adults 5 children). It worked really well for us that all the children were of an age and got on well. We loved the elephant safari. It was amazing to be so close to the animals in their natural habitat. In Sri Lanka we saw monkeys, elephants, water monitors, lizards, fruit bats, peacocks, crocodiles, turtles: a host of wildlife you only see in zoos in England. BARNES FAMILY, SRI LANKA, Ceylon Discovery, July 2015

Discussing the Vietnam war with people who lived through it or even fought in it was a unique experience which neither we nor our children will forget. It was living history. Rohll Family, TAILOR-MADE TRIP TO VietnaM, July 2015

The highlight of our trip to Costa Rica has to be on the beach at Tortuguero, late at night and only lit by the moon, witnessing the huge and truly beautiful green turtles emerge from the wild sea and haul themselves up the beach to nest. We felt so privileged to be there at that moment. Lockwood Family, Costa Rica, Rainforest & Volcanoes, August 2015
