ur Ninth Annual Awards Dinner was a thrill, as always, and once again it was a sell-out crowd with more than 850 people in attendance. The ballroom at Shenandoah Country Club practically hummed with good vibrations that night. Thanks to everyone who came out for our big shindig and to the sponsors who made it all possible. And a big salute to radio personality Mojo, who marked his fifth year as our emcee. We’re already mulling ideas to celebrate our big 10th anniversary dinner in 2013. We’d love your input; please drop a line to info@ChaldeanChamber.com. You may have to save us from ourselves since we keep picturing a theme centered around the 1979 film “10” and its star, Bo Derek. Back in present time, our electronic newsletter is now sent out weekly to keep members informed of pertinent news and upcoming events. And have you visited our Facebook page lately? We have received great feedback on our new feature highlighting a Member of the Day. One of the greatest benefits of belonging to the chamber is the opportunity to do business with your fellow members, and this allows you to learn more about them and all they have to offer. For now, we’re enjoying the calm before the storm. June is our busiest month – the Chaldean Festival takes place June 8-10 in Southfield and our Golf Outing (also the ninth annual!) is on June 21 at Shenandoah. There are details about each event in this issue of Chaldean Commerce. We hope to see you at one or, better yet, both occasions. As always, we greatly appreciate your membership and welcome feedback on how we can serve you better. Enjoy the rest of spring – even with our mild winter, nothing beats springtime in Michigan. As a wise man once said, “The day the Lord created hope was probably the same day he created spring.”

Did You Know? Chamber members get a discount on their booth! Call (248) 996-8340 to learn more.

It’s Festival Time!

T

he Chaldean Festival on June 8-10 marks its seventh year in Southfield. With a bustling midway, scrumptious food, and the best in Chaldean music, the festival is a great place to tout your product or service.

5 Reasons to Exhibit at the Chaldean Festival • Reach 30,000 people over three days • Every ethnicity is represented – not just Chaldeans • Southfield is the crossroads of Metro Detroit • Parking is free and easy • Attendees are in a great, receptive mood!

Tips for a Successful Booth Be on time for the show and set up when it is time to set up. Also, do not tear down your booth earlier than permitted. • Be yourself and act natural to enhance customer comfort, but refrain from chattering away. People do not want you to follow them around, talking incessantly while they are visiting your booth. • Be sure customers can see your merchandise or literature clearly without the need for craning their necks or stooping low. Vertical displays work well – they allow the eye to fall on desirable items and do so quickly. Jewelry is best displayed in a lighted case.

• Keep plenty of stock on hand. If you walked into a store that had only five items displayed, would you buy anything? Probably not. Add filler items to hide empty space if you run out of stock – floral arrangements, decorative lamps or other items that go with the general theme of your booth. • Try to engage as many senses as possible in order to influence people positively. Every vendor can create marvelous visual appeal, and everyone can use scents to draw people in. Let people touch the merchandise, and if you are selling food or other consumables, provide samples. • If you have a website or sell online, remember to prompt customers to visit by handing out business cards or attaching the information to product labels. • Be respectful, be kind and follow the golden rule. Treat everyone you meet in the same way you would like to be treated. Remember to say thank you, and provide little items of value with purchases if possible. Going the extra mile is the number one key to customer satisfaction. • If you’re a food vendor, give out samples. This will certainly attract people to your booth. Just a small cup full of a drink or a tiny piece of baklava can be a good way to entice people to try more of your foods and drinks. • Bring a friend to keep you company and watch the booth while you take breaks.

Build Your Mailing List! Festivals are a great way to develop your customer database. Try putting a fishbowl on your table and offering people a chance to win a prize in return for giving you their contact information or business card. Giving away promotional items with your company’s name and logo works, too. This way, you can send out postcards inviting prospects to your next show. Don’t forget to collect e-mail addresses, too — it’s a lot cheaper to send out 100 e-mail messages than it is to pay for paper and postage. – Entrepreneur.com

Come One, Come All! Friday, June 8, 5-10 p.m. Saturday, June 9, 12-10 p.m. Sunday, June 10, 12-10 p.m. 50/50 raffle ticket will be drawn at 9 p.m. on June 10. Winner need not be present.

members in the news Another Senseless Murder Hundreds of mourners gathered at Mother of God Church in Southfield on May 5, to honor Faraj (“Fred”) Dally at a funeral mass. Employers Asking for Too Much Information

BY JOHNNY ORAM

Holders of liquor licenses must get on the ball and start filing the renewal way before the deadline.

Many employers throughout the country have been asking potential candidates for their log-in information for social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, etc. Resistance has sometimes resulted in being denied a job offer. Michigan, as well as many other states, has taken the initiative to prohibit companies from seeking user names and passwords from future and current employees. House Bill 5523 would prohibit these employers from taking action against those who refuse to provide the information. Several lawmakers at the federal level have questioned the legality of such measures by employers and charge that it violates the Stored Communications Act, the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, and federal anti-discriminatory laws.

On April 27, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 4628, the Interest Rate Reduction Act, under closed rules. If passed by the Senate and signed by President Barack Obama, the law would prevent a hike in interest rates on new federally subsidized student Stafford Loans. If no action is taken, the interest rate will leap from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent on July 1. This law would extend the current 3.4 percent until July 1, 2013. The cost of extending the lower interest rate for one year totals about $6 billion.

Liquor Control Commission Starts Strict Enforcement The Michigan Liquor Control Commission is no longer being lenient with liquor license renewals, which had an April 30 deadline. The MLCC will no longer grant leeway or grace periods like they did in the past, so holders of liquor licenses must get on the ball and start filing the renewal way before the deadline. Failure to do so will result in the inability to sell liquor. On top of that, the commission has stated that it has no authority to quickly reinstate a license that has been cancelled due to paying dues late. As of April 30, 2012, licensees not properly renewed are simply being cancelled. A licensee has no immediate recourse available once their license is cancelled.

Will Student Loans Stay Affordable?

CHALDEAN COMMERCE SPRING 2012

Where’s the Budget? It’s been three years since the U.S. Senate has passed a budget bill and Democrat Senator Harry Reid has indicated that he’s in no hurry to bring one before the Senate in 2012. “We do not need to bring a budget to the floor this year — it’s done, we don’t need to do it,” he told reporters in February. Both the U.S. House and Senate were supposed to reach a concurrent agreement on a budget by April 15, however, the Democratic-controlled Senate hasn’t submitted one since 2009. Critics argue that the Democrats are playing politics by not being serious enough in passing the budget bill. Some say Reid hasn’t put forth a budget because his Democratic majority in the Senate doesn’t want Americans to know the trillions of dollars being spent. However, Reid and Speaker Nancy Pelosi received praise from President Obama in 2009 when he thanked them for passing a budget resolution that will serve as an economic blueprint for America’s future.

Awaiting a Ruling on Arizona Pot, Meet Kettle The Democrats in the Michigan Legislature have recently cried foul for Republicans passing legislation with “immediate effect.” The Michigan Constitution clearly states that laws cannot take effect for at least 90 days after the current session year unless passed by two-thirds in both the House and Senate. But the Democrats have also violated this clause by pushing many bills through the Legislature with “immediate effect” and roll-call votes. The problem lies with both parties, regardless of who controls the Legislature.

A ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court is expected this June regarding Arizona’s tough immigration law. The U.S. Department of Justice says Arizona’s immigration laws conflict with federal immigration policy. Arizona has set a precedent that will allow police officers to check on immigration status of people they suspect are in the U.S. illegally, and then arrest them without a warrant. Chief Justice John Roberts challenged Solicitor General Donald Verrilli on issues beyond race. “No part of your argument has to do with racial or ethnic profiling?” he asked. “No,” replied Verrilli. The decision will boil down to federal power and states’ rights.

Marketing

Networking 101: Making the right impression, building relationships

I BY DON TANNER

Meeting new people can often prove challenging and daunting.

12

n the world of marketing – including promoting one’s self, business and services – there is often an overlooked area that is worthy of discussion and consideration. We call it strategic networking. And, believe it or not, it can be one of the most important marketing avenues you ever undertake. This refers to grassroots, face-to-face interaction taking place outside of your business and can take many shapes and forms: a chamber networking reception; a charitable golf outing; an industry business conference. What is key for each is not just a matter of participation (although that is Step 1), it is how you approach and make the most of such opportunities, both during and after each respective event. Start by taking an accounting of current, recent and prospective involvement. Your time is valuable. Are the events and groups you are participating in providing value? Why or why not? Keep in mind that “success” (typically developing new business and contacts) does not happen overnight. If you are expecting to attend a couple events, pass out and collect a few business cards and then watch the phone ring off the hook, you are likely to be sorely disappointed. Today more than ever, people do business with people they know and trust. Like any relationship, building a productive business relationship takes time and effort. Some are better at this than

CHALDEAN COMMERCE SPRING 2012

others. Meeting new people can often prove challenging and daunting. When joining a new organization, leverage existing relationships with longtime members as well as organizational leadership to help make initial introductions. Hone your “elevator speech” to the point that you can succinctly and compellingly communicate what you do and how you do it better in 60 seconds or less. And don’t forget those business cards (which hopefully contain all pertinent online information including web address and social media URLs). Often key to maximizing memberships or event participation is to become tangibly involved. Work toward joining a board or committee germane

to your area of expertise. Assist in the planning and implementation of an important event or organizational undertaking. The camaraderie developed in such scenarios can prove invaluable. But perhaps the most important element in all of your strategic networking outreach and interacting with people through such initiatives is listening. All too often individuals make the mistake of talking and “selling” and not being receptive to hearing the needs of those they are speaking with. Think: How can I help you? Finally: Stay in touch. Don’t discount particular individuals because they work in lines of work that, at face value, you are not interested in. Add everyone you meet to a master list for later outreach (for example, e-blast updates on your company and its accomplishments). Treat everyone you meet with respect – it’s the right thing to do and you never know when a friend of a friend of whomever you meet might just need your product or service. Remember that first impressions are as important as anything. Face-to-face interaction and discourse, through networking, is where it all begins. Napa AutoCare offers complete car care service from routine dealer-recommended maintenance to complete diagnostics and full-service repairs. Peter Mona’s shop has been in business since late 1997. “We do everything from brakes to mufflers to air conditioning,” he says. “The only thing we don’t do is collision work – but there is a collision shop just two doors down.” Napa is the busiest repair shop in the area, Mona says: “No one comes close to the business we do here, because we take care of people.” Visit their website for a treasure-trove of information on car maintenance and preventative care. 28799 Orchard Lake Road Farmington Hills, MI 48334 (248) 553-3302 NapaAutoFarmingtonHills.com VARNUM, RIDDERING, SCHMIDT & HOWLETT, LLP Michael J. Ever wonder who offers the better deal, Fed Ex, UPS, DHL or the U.S. Post Office? As authorized dealers of all four options, the folks at Ship Shop can tell you how to save money on whatever you’re sending, be it an overnight letter, large box or complete automobile. Just opened in February, the new shipping shop at Northwestern and Inkster in Southfield also offers copy services, personal mail boxes (not a P.O. box), custom printing, office supplies, specialty paper and gifts — even special-occasion balloons. Clients enjoy fast turnaround on banners, flyers, custom invitations, posters and other printed items. “We can do a thousand business cards the next day for just $50,” says John Yasso, who opened the shop with a few partners. “It’s all about the customer service.” 29864 Northwestern Highway Southfield, MI 48034 (248) 327-7364 TheShipShop.com EASTERN AUTO COMPANY, INC.
