Establish new fund at the Community Foundation When Bill and Julie Kellner decided to plan their charitable giving, one method of delivery stood out – the Community Foundation for the Land of Lincoln. The Kellners, who operate MJ Kellner Co. Inc., recently established the Kellner Charitable Fund through the Foundation. “We are fortunate to be in a position to give back to the community, believe in the mission of the foundation and are secure in knowing the fund will be judicially managed,” Julie Kellner said. “We look forward to working with (Executive Director) John Stremsterfer and the staff at the Foundation and see what we can do over time.” The Kellner fund will focus on education and health care, with an emphasis on patient care and mental health issues. Bill Kellner’s parents, Janet and Hack, were extensively involved with Memorial Medical Center and the family believes strongly in continuing their commitment.

Narrowing down the broad interests is a benefit to working with the Foundation, which has knowledge and access to a wide range of charitable causes. “It’s quite helpful that the Community Foundation assists in finding organizations in need of help,” Kellner said. For a list of charitable funds established through the Community Foundation or to start your own donor-advised fund please visit www.CFLL.org or call 217-789-4431.

Two New Funds Honor Donors’ Parents John A. and Lucille M. Allen Family Fund Allens hope fund fertilizes Little Flower for years to come Where was simple. How was a little harder. John Allen and his family found the solution with the Community Foundation for the Land of Lincoln. In honor of his parents, Allen, his brothers Richard and David, and their families recently established the John A. and Lucille M. Allen Family Fund. The Fund is a designated fund that will support Little Flower School and Parish.

New Community Foundation Tools: Endowment Calculator

T

he Community Foundation rolled out a new tool for potential donors to see how endowment funds build and work over time. Our updated website at www.CFLL.org now includes an “Endowment Calculator” to see how your charitable fund may grow over time and the grantmaking impact it could have. Check out this calculator and other new tools for donors, advisors and charities at www.CFLL.org.

Connecting people who care with causes that matter.

“We’re really pleased that there is a great organization like the Community Foundation available to handle these things,” Allen said. “As a community of faith, Little Flower meant a lot to Mom and Dad, and education was very important to them.”

John and Lucille Allen

Lucille Allen passed away in January. Her husband, John Allen Sr. had passed away 10 years ago. The couple had been heavily involved at Little Flower. Lucille Allen served as the school secretary for 16 years, and her husband was a trustee at the church and served on the finance committee. The couple’s three sons all attended K-8th grade at the school. In later years, John and Lucille organized the Bingo nights that helped fund church activities. “The church and the school meant a lot to her,” Allen said. “They were part of the fabric of Little Flower. It was a real easy choice.” John Allen had spoken to his mother prior to her death about establishing a fund to benefit the parish and school. His brothers readily agreed to support the fund. For many generations of church goers, the Allens were synonymous with activities at the church. The family chose to work with the Community Foundation in part because that multi-generational support can continue. “Maybe it won’t be as large a gift as it could have been right away but over time, that the Fund will go on and support the church is something really neat,” Allen said. The Allens, who lived in Springfield since the 1940s, didn’t limit their philanthropic efforts to Little Flower. The couple delivered Meals on Wheels for years and were active in the Boy Scouts of America and other charitable organizations. However, it was the Church that always held a special place for the family, and in an era where the Church isn’t as populated as before, supporting the cause that enriched their family for decades was crucial. On their wedding day in 1945 “In tougher times, it’s harder for churches to get by. The numbers work against churches. This is one way my folks can continue to contribute,” Allen said. Familiarity with foundations launches fund McCree Family Fund established Mary Lynn Bryan believes in community foundations. She has watched them benefit communities for generations and has been active for decades in the Fayetteville, N.C. community foundation where she resides.

The flexibility community foundations allow also was a major draw. The McCree Fund will be a field of interest fund focusing on improving local infrastructure and supporting sports activities. The choices were chosen from the siblings’ connection to Springfield. John McCree played multiple sports at Springfield High School. Mary was on the cheerleading squad. “Mother and Father loved sports. They went to every game,” Bryan said. “There are a lot of ways you can be supportive of sports, whether it’s helping build a field or helping kids go somewhere to learn a sport.”

So when she and her brother, John McCree, decided to honor their late parents, Evelyn and Walter McCree, Bryan knew the perfect avenue. Families & Circles Impacted Through Giving A family giving affair for Roberts

utilized in part to help teach the younger generation about charitable giving.

Roberts Family Fund created It’s about teaching as much as giving. The Roberts family has a long history in the Springfield business community through their family business, Standard Mutual Insurance Company, and a tradition of supporting local philanthropic efforts. The desire to maintain that tradition in future generations led the family to establish the Roberts Family Fund through the Community Foundation for the Land of Lincoln. “We feel that the fund is a great opportunity to honor family members that always stressed the importance of giving back while at the same time educating younger family members about the importance of philanthropy,” Mark Roberts III said. “By creating the Roberts Family Fund, it allows for a very organized process with great flexibility for the family’s giving strategy.”

“This will be a group decision-making process with all family members all the way down to the grandchildren,” Roberts said. It’s a process the family hopes plays out across many decades. “The long-term goal for the fund is to make sure that we have a perpetual giving plan for future generations to come,” Roberts said. For more information on donor-advised funds, please contact the Community Foundation at 217-789-4431 or www.CFLL.org.

Women for Women

Giving circle celebrates giving back In May, nearly 60 Women for Women members and guests gathered at the Illini Country Club for the giving circle’s fourth annual Spring Luncheon.

Frank Roberts The move into a donor-advised fund through the Community Foundation had been discussed by the family for the past few years. The family is familiar with many people associated with the Foundation and feels it provides an excellent base from which to launch local philanthropy. “We have been extremely impressed with the Community Foundation from the leadership, staff and board of directors. We feel that the Foundation provided the perfect opportunity to establish a charitable fund,” Roberts said. In the past the family has been active in the American Red Cross. Both Mark Roberts Jr. and Mark Roberts III have served on the organization’s local board. However, Mark Roberts Sr. the family fund does not have a specific target charity. The flexibility is a tremendous asset of the donor-advised fund. The decision-making will be a family process overseen by Mark Roberts Jr. and Mark Roberts III. The process will be

On Sept. 21, members will gather again at the INB Conference Center in Springfield for Women for Women’s fourth annual Grant Reception. This year, a total of $23,000 in grants is being awarded to two local nonprofits to support education and life skills programs for young adult women and adolescent girls. In addition, three Women Helping Women awards will be presented to women who have gone above and beyond to help women and children in the community.

2010 Report to the Community Message to our community

The charitable assets of the Community Foundation have grown more than ten-fold since 2002. Those assets are used to provide grants to local nonprofits, schools and churches. They also provide scholarships for students seeking to continue their education. The Community Foundation serves as a connection between donors who want to make a difference and those charities that need their help and is constantly seeking to fulfill its mission of “connecting people who care with causes that matter.” We are ever so grateful for those donors, volunteers and organizations who made all these good works possible in 2010. Thank you for being a part of your Community Foundation. Best,

Scholarship recipient Parris Fleming with board member Carolyn Blackwell at the 2010 Scholarship Reception. The Foundation awarded $48,200 in scholarships in 2010.

In 2010, we moved to the current U.S. Bank building at the corner of 5th and Adams streets in downtown. (Pictured here as First State Trust and Savings Bank, one of the banks that founded the Sangamon County Foundation, our predecessor organization, in 1924.)

The Community Foundation for the Land of Lincoln (Sangamon County Community Foundation in 2010) has accomplished so much since our humble beginnings. Our predecessor organization, the Sangamon County Foundation, was organized in 1924 and converted its assets to be a ‘community foundation’ in 2002. Since then, we have taken on four staff members, hundreds of committed volunteers, community leadership projects and created a new source of philanthropy for our community.

Members of the King’s Daughters Organization (KDO) accept the 2010 Women Helping Women award. The KDO Fund distributed $100,000 in grant awards to local nonprofits in 2010.

Each year, I continue to be amazed at the generous donors to the Community Foundation and all the good works this organization is able to accomplish for our community.

Foundation Events 2011 Membership drive

Young Philanthropists welcome new members The Young Philanthropists giving circle is entering its sixth year with a great line up of events for members. The next event will be in September at Zara’s Collision Center. The group’s first social event of the year was a membership drive held in June at the Brickhouse downtown. The Young Philanthropists members are currently voting on an issue area for their grantmaking activities this year. Members will also draw names from volunteers for the grant committee at the upcoming event. The grant is made possible each year through member contributions and earnings from the Future Fund. There is still plenty of time to join this group and be able to impact the grant this year. Please contact the Foundation at 217-789-4431 or email yp@CFLL. org for more information or to join.

Scholarship reception

Foundation reaches $250,000 in scholarship awards The Community Foundation hosted a reception in June to recognize the 34 area students who were awarded $38,700 in scholarships this year. This is the seventh year of the scholarship program at the Community Foundation, and the awards this year bring the cumulative scholarship distributions to over a quarter of a million dollars ($250,300)! Frontiers International Springfield Club The reception was held to recognize these members Derrick Stapleton and Doug King student scholars, their families, and the with recipient Nicholas Moore (center) donors to these scholarship funds. The

Foundation had the help of 67 volunteers, who served on 17 scholarship selection committees, to review the 138 applications that were submitted this year.

These scholarships would not be possible without the generous donors, families and organizations who have established them. Kenneth White is the son of one of those donors, and he spoke at the reception about the Reverend Kenneth H. White Family scholarship that his family established and the impact it has had. Over the last seven years, this fund has made $4,300 in scholarships available to Lanphier High Schools students who wish to pursue a teaching degree and teach in public schools.

ith our new logo and new website, the Community Foundation is ready to hit the world of social media networks! We now have our own Facebook page that you can “Like” (please do!) and another page for the Young Philanthropists. Community Foundation News & Notes Foundation reaches century mark Our 100th fund

The Community Foundation is growing! Nine years after converting from a private foundation to a community foundation... we have reached 100 charitable funds. In 2003, the first employee was hired and there was one fund with approximately $800,000 in assets. Today, there are 101 funds and nearly $10 million in total assets. The Springfield Business Journal published a cover story in August about the 100th fund, the John A. and Lucille M. Allen Family Fund (see pg 2). The Community Foundation for the Land of Lincoln would like to thank all of our past and present board members, volunteers, donors and friends for their support in growing the Foundation over the last several years.

Staff update: Leadership Springfield Stacy Reed completes training program

New Community Foundation Tools: Online Grant Applications

The Community Foundation’s program director, Stacy Reed, graduated from the 2010-2011 Leadership Springfield class last spring after completing the eight-month program that included leadership skill development and in-depth exposure to critical issues affecting the Springfield area.

T

As part of the program, participants were also required to complete a team project for a local nonprofit organization. Stacy and her team joined with the Business/Education Partnership of Sangamon County to develop and launch “Principal for a Day” – a one-day event held on April 12 where 29 top local executives were recruited and paired with principals and spent an entire day in an assigned school, shadowing their principal. The goal of the program was to help spur relationships between local businesses and schools by giving executives an inside look at the complex role of school principals.

he Community Foundation has been taking advantage of its new website and is now accepting grant applications online. Our online system is very user-friendly and is designed to streamline our application and review process, save paper and eliminate the need for charities to make multiple copies of applications and materials for each funding cycle. Access to the new online system is through our website: www.CFLL.org.

Connecting people who care with causes that matter.

This was the 25th year of the Leadership Springfield program, which is administered through The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce to identify and motivate emerging leaders and develop their potential for civic leadership.

Staff update: Forty Under 40 Jennifer Sublett recognized

Each year the Springfield Business Journal features 40 leaders who are under the age of 40 in the Springfield and neighboring business communities. These individuals are selected based on their contributions to our local business community and the community in which they have chosen to reside. The Foundation’s director of donor & public relations, Jennifer Sublett, was honored by being selected to the 2011 list of central Illinois business leaders.
