Building a Stronger Community 2013-2014 ANNUAL REPORT

Our Mission The Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region strengthens our community by attracting charitable endowments both large and small, maximizing benefits to donors, making effective grants, and providing leadership to address community needs.

Our Vision The Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region was founded in 1968 by a group of prominent local residents who shared a belief that by collectively investing our charitable resources, we could grow them over time to benefit our community far into the future. Today, the Foundation has more than $63 million in assets under management and, in 2013, distributed $4.87 million in scholarships to local students and grants to nonprofit organizations. As the needs of the greater Capital Region become more complex, the Foundation is proud of its role as a leader in responding to needs and leveraging support for emerging issues. Together with our Board of Directors and the support of our community, we look forward to working with donors, community leaders and volunteers to respond to issues with flexibility, creativity and efficiency.

Dear friends: It has been an incredible year at the Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region. The Foundation hit several new high points during the last year: The Foundation awarded more than $4.87 million in grants to nonprofit organizations and scholarships to local students in 2013, up from $4.45 million in 2012 and $3.3 million in 2011. Not only did the Foundation provide more support to organizations and programs in 2013 than in years past, the number of grants also increased. The Foundation awarded 1,190 grants in 2013, compared to 1,101 grants in 2012 and 938 in 2011. The Foundation added 20 new charitable funds in 2013.These new funds, which are listed on page 10, were each tailored to the donor’s philanthropic intentions and guided by the Foundation’s deep knowledge of our community. While these numbers are impressive, at the Foundation, we are impressed by the individual stories behind the donors, the grants and the community change they inspire. What follows is a combination of stories of impact that include the passion of our donors, the skill of volunteers, staff and community partners and the innovation of our nonprofit partners. Together, we are building a stronger community.

Karen Bilowith President & CEO

In partnership with our donors, the Board and staff of the Community Foundation are proud to encourage collaborations between nonprofit organizations so that deep-rooted community issues can be addressed in new and effective ways. We are grateful to our donors for their partnership in, and enthusiasm for, informed philanthropy, and grateful for the guidance we receive from some of our area’s top professional financial advisors, which ensures the Foundation operates from a stable, sustainable fiscal base. The Community Foundation is dedicated to building a strong community through philanthropy. In this Annual Report, you will learn how the Foundation works with its partners to serve the residents and organizations of the greater Capital Region and beyond through leadership, funding opportunities, and unsurpassed community knowledge. On behalf of the Community Foundation’s Board of Directors and staff, we are deeply grateful to the generous donors and community partners who helped the Foundation reach such great heights. In appreciation,

Karen Bilowith President & CEO

Foundation Partners Say … The New York Council of Nonprofits (NYCON) has partnered with the Community Foundation on many initiatives, going back to when the Community Foundation started. This past year, we are particularly excited over our collaborative launching of the innovative Capacity Building Mini-Grant Program.

Over a period of just four months, NYCON educated executive directors and board members from 50 local nonprofit organizations in standing-room-only sessions on contemporary topics critical to excellence in governance. Session topics included the recently-enacted Nonprofit Revitalization Act, board duties and responsibilities, board-executive relations, and strategic planning. Following the training series, qualified nonprofits were invited to apply for capacity-building grants administered by the Community Foundation. The Community Foundation also supports NYCON’s work in the local community by providing grant funding for new nonprofit executives to get the professional development training they need in these

In 1968, the Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region’s first year of operations, the Foundation held $46,000 in assets and awarded $600 in grants to nonprofit organizations. Over the years, thanks to careful financial stewardship and the partnership of generous donors, the Foundation’s assets and grantmaking ability have grown exponentially. As foundations across the United States celebrate the centennial anniversary of the community foundation movement (which started with the founding of the Cleveland Foundation on January 2, 1914), the Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region is doing more than ever before to strengthen our community through leadership, philanthropic guidance and grantmaking.

The major part of Saratoga Shakespeare’s summer performance season has just ended, and I have a moment to extend a sincere thank you for the wonderful series of workshops which you coordinated. I participated in all four sessions of the Capacity Building Mini-Grant Program and each session was well organized, well presented and filled with vital material for all in attendance. I had a unique perspective: I attended as the Executive Director of the Saratoga Shakespeare Company, but I also serve on the board of The International Center of the Capital Region. From my dual perspectives, I felt that I was participating in a Masters’ degree-level intensive program. Last year, as part of an emergency measure, I stepped into the role as Executive Director of Saratoga Shakespeare, but I knew that I had a lot of learning to do. (NYCON Executive Director) Doug Sauer’s presentations on the duties and responsibilities of a board of directors and the NYS Revitalization Act contained extremely pertinent material for Saratoga Shakespeare as an organization in transition. Each session proved to be helpful, thought-provoking (continued on next page sidebar)

Options for Giving — Get Involved! There are many ways to support the nonprofit organizations and causes close to your heart through a fund at the Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region. To learn more, please call the Foundation at (518) 446-9638. Community Impact Funds help the Foundation address the community’s most pressing needs. Donors can rely on the Community Foundation to identify organizations capable of making the greatest impact in the specific issue area or region of particular importance to them. Donor Advised Funds allow donors to recommend grants to support specific charitable organizations. Fund advisors make grant recommendations; the Community Foundation then vets the recipient nonprofit organization and handles all legal and administrative details. Agency Funds help nonprofit organizations build financial stability. The Foundation partners with local nonprofit organizations to build long-term, sustainable fiscal reserves that can benefit the organization far into the future. Designated Funds are an easy way to ensure a donor’s favorite nonprofit organization(s) receive grants for a specific amount of time, or in perpetuity. Donors select specific nonprofits, the Foundation invests the charitable assets, and regularly pays grants to the designated charities.

I also want to express my gratitude for the “Office Hour” meetings, which provided a thorough introduction to the Community Foundation. I found the session extremely helpful. It not only introduced me to the Foundation, but also served as introduction to the many other nonprofits who attended. The Office Hour session provides a “non-official” opportunity for community nonprofits to learn how we can connect and assist each other. Jackie Mahoney also arranged for me to meet individually with her. She took the time to learn more about the Saratoga Shakespeare Co. and to share vital information about the Community Foundation. I have a lot of work in front of me, but the workshop sessions and additional learning opportunities have provided guideposts to help me build a thriving arts organization which, like the Foundation, seeks to enhance the quality of life in the region.

Field of Interest Funds are established to benefit a donor’s area of interest. The donor specifies an area of interest (such as the arts, education or the environment), and the Foundation ensures grants are made to effective nonprofit organizations whose programs and services match the donor’s intent.

Thank you for providing these opportunities.

Community Foundation Operating Funds are a stable, long-term source of revenue for the Community Foundation. Operating Funds are the result of the generosity of donors who have given directly to the Foundation to help preserve their ability to operate now, and in the years to come.

Barbara Opitz, Executive Director, The Saratoga Shakespeare Company

Scholarship Funds give donors the opportunity to help students realize their educational dreams. Donors can designate eligibility requirements and selection criteria, and work with the Foundation to name an advisory committee to assist with making awards.

Community Grantmaking

When I began working at the Community Foundation more than a decade ago, the Foundation awarded about $2 million each year in grants to nonprofit organizations and in scholarships to local students. In 2013, in partnership with our donors and affiliates, the Community Foundation gave nearly $5 million in grants and scholarships. One of the most interesting parts of my work is getting a bird’s-eye view of issues being addressed by local nonprofit organizations through grant applications. Reviewing grant submissions helps the Foundation to understand growing issues in the communities we serve, and it allows us to respond proactively.

Jackie Mahoney Vice President of Programs

The Community Foundation is many things. The Foundation is a philanthropic partner for donors, a resource for professional advisors, a leader and partner in the Capital Region nonprofit community... and a grantmaking organization. The Foundation’s unique view on nonprofit activities and emerging community needs allows us to be a better partner to local nonprofit organizations. We encourage collaboration between agencies and leaders, so that organizations can serve shared audiences better and most efficiently. We work with organizations such as the New York Council of Nonprofits (NYCON) to provide training that addresses knowledge or experience gaps in the nonprofit community. We work with Foundation donors to educate them and encourage them to fund programs and organizations that are tackling issues effectively and efficiently. Through strategic grantmaking and the support of the Foundation’s donors, the Foundation is helping to build a stronger community for all those who live, work and visit the greater Capital Region. It’s a privilege to direct the Foundation’s grantmaking, and a true pleasure to see our grantmaking grow each year.

Foundation Partners Say … Dear CFGCR Board of Directors, On Monday evening the Board of the Albany Fund for Education had its Annual Meeting to elect our officers, reflect on what we’ve accomplished, and set priorities for the upcoming year. I thought you’d be pleased to know that the strategic planning process undertaken through a grant provided by the Community Foundation was consistently referenced as a valued part of our year. Time and again the impact of the process was referenced as critical to our continued growth and success. Our new organizational structure, the specific steps to enhance operations, clarity of purpose, and improved communication strategy, have all come as a result of the Community Foundation grant. On behalf of the board, I sincerely thank you and the members of the Community Foundation for this grant. Please continue to make funding to other small organizations like ours, so that they too can grow and flourish. Sincerely, Onnolee Smith President, Albany Fund for Education

However, there is benefit beyond the individual participants and their organizations. The cohort-based design of the year-long program allows us to bring together leaders and emerging leaders from like-organizations to foster cooperation and collaboration. One outcome: the completion of a Capstone Project that consolidates session-based learning and facilitates collaborations across agencies for the achievement of common goals. For example, this past year’s animal welfare cohort is data gathering and completing an ambitious study of the services offered, gaps in the community, ways to address gaps and their capacity to share resources. The fellows learn together, work together and the result is an enhanced community in which the sharing of resources is possible. Foundation Partners Say …

For more than a decade, the Troy Savings Bank Charitable Foundation has proudly worked with the Community Foundation on funding initiatives for local nonprofit organizations. The Troy Savings Bank Charitable Foundation was established in 1999 to provide financial support to nonprofit organizations throughout the greater Capital Region and the southern Adirondacks region. Since inception, the Troy Savings Bank Foundation has provided more than $9 million in funding to support local charitable initiatives.

As funding organizations, the Community Foundation and the Troy Savings Bank Charitable Foundation have a unique view on emerging needs and current issues affecting local communities. The challenges facing the population of the greater Capital Region are unique, numerous and diverse. These challenges require creative, forward-thinking responses. By working together, the Troy Savings Bank Charitable Foundation and the Community Foundation have been able to drive greater action and award larger grants than either organization could if we acted independently.

The Bethlehem Central Community Foundation (BCCF) has worked as an affiliate of the Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region since 2011. BCCF was established in 1998 to support students and educators in the Bethlehem Central School District through grantmaking and scholarships. BCCF provides funding for initiatives not traditionally supported by tax dollars, such as our Classroom Innovation Grants, which provide funding for unique educational opportunities and programs that promote academic achievement.

As an affiliate, the Community Foundation assists BCCF with administrative and grantmaking support. This relationship allows BCCF to reduce operating expenses by eliminating our need for paid staff members, office space and equipment. BCCF also benefits from the Community Foundation’s sound financial management, through which our funds grow over time, increasing BCCF’s ability to support our community. In the three years since BCCF became an affiliate of the Community Foundation, our grantmaking has steadily grown. In 2012, we awarded grants totaling just under $3,000, and in 2013 our grant awards rose to more than $9,000. (continued on next page sidebar)

We can’t know what the future will bring for Bethlehem Central School District’s budget, or what needs will arise for students. But we do know that our work with the Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region has made it possible to continue supporting educational opportunities for teachers and students in Bethlehem far into the future. We are grateful for the support and guidance of the Community Foundation and their excellent staff, and we look forward to working with them for many years to come. Patricia Michaelson, Board Treasurer, Bethlehem Central Community Foundation, and Board Liaison to the Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region
