Message from Our Superintendent Thank You Chagrin! This year, students headed off to enjoy the annual Blossom Time Festival with the 2015-16 school year complete. On behalf of the Chagrin Falls Board of Education, we would like to wish the entire community an enjoyable summer. This has been a tremendous school year as we implemented the second year of the district strategic plan in our quest to personalize education for every student. Recently, we asked our parents and staff to complete a survey to gauge progress on the ongoing work within the district. This data will be evaluated and inform us of necessary changes as we finalize focus areas for the upcoming school year. Over the next month, we will complete a comprehensive summary of the work completed and share it through the annual publication of the district’s Quality Profile. We are extremely excited to announce that we will be moving forward with the creation of the Innovation Lab at Chagrin Falls Middle School. This is phase #1 of an independent fundraising campaign led by the Chagrin Falls Education Foundation. The space will build upon and expand the current capacity of the media center by integrating three distinct areas: 1. A research center to foster idea creation, study and allow students to explore literature 2. A collaboration classroom where we will force collisions between students and faculty in small group discussions within the school, and beyond the borders of Chagrin through connected technologies 3. A maker’s space to bring students’ ideas to life with 3D printers, embroidery machines, laser cutters, tools and more.

This renovation project will begin immediately. This is the result of the campaign led by Chagrin Falls Education Foundation and has already been supported by parents, residents and other school support organizations (PTO, Boosters and Dads’ Club). The second phase of this is to integrate

STEM programming in grades K – 8 and add additional technology exposure for students in the high school. Learn more and see renderings of the space here by watching the video: https://www. gofundme.com/cfinnovation. The district has also continued to focus on a long-term facility plan. The Chagrin Falls Board of Education has been working diligently to evaluate options that meet educational needs while being fiscally responsible. As of now, the board anticipates placing a combination levy on the ballot next spring that would provide a four-year operating cycle, address Chagrin Falls Intermediate School and provide necessary monies to maintain ongoing capital expenditures. The board has engaged a core group of highly qualified residents with experience in the industry to provide recommendations in three areas: 1. Evaluate current design of Chagrin Falls Intermediate School identifying modifications or comprehensive changes for the Board of Education to evaluate to achieve a lower cost. 2. Recommend an ongoing permanent improvement amount that would meet capital expenditures in the foreseeable future 3. Evaluate swing space options for educating students during construction. The committee will be making recommendations for board consideration by August. If you would like more information regarding this process or would like to monitor progress of this work information can be accessed at http://www. chagrinschools.org/FacilityMasterPlan.aspx . This is certainly an exciting time for our school district. We are extremely fortunate to work in a community that values and supports education. We will be working diligently to be prepared to welcome our students back on August 23. Have a wonderful summer Chagrin! Robert W. A Review of the May/June Board of Education Meetings “Board Briefs” Spring is a busy time in our schools as we recognize our student’s accomplishments and thank our administration and staff for their dedication. Attending academic competitions, concerts, athletic competitions, award dinners, clap outs or graduation is a powerful reminder of the many opportunities available to the students of Chagrin Falls to excel both in and out of the classroom. Spring was busy for the Board of Education as well. In May, the board commissioned an autonomous committee to optimize the work on Facilities that has been done to date. We are fortunate to live in a community where many accomplished individuals are willing to volunteer their time and expertise to support our schools. We would like to recognize and thank Frank Aucremanne, Mark Lenart , Pete Snavely, Phil Koepf, George Clemens, Phil Rankin, Mark Evans, Bruce Sampsel and Gary Welch for their contribution of Finance, Real Estate, Facilities Management, Business Management, Architectural and Engineering experience.

The first meeting of this committee included a robust conversation questioning assumptions within the existing work. The committee has agreed to report back to the board in August with recommendations that identify potential building cost savings, evaluate additional options for swing space and address longer-term facility needs throughout the District including the Gurney elementary building. We are excited about the work that is being done and hopeful that this additional step in our process will set us up for success garnering community support with a May 2017 ballot initiative.

Much of our time was also dedicated to reviewing some tremendous work on the part of our administration and staff to assure we keep our course offerings relevant and competitive. One exciting addition in 2016-17 includes a comprehensive Health curriculum for grades K-12. Historically, components of health education have been integrated in science, social studies and PE. Thanks to a team effort with teachers from each of our four buildings, going forward we will provide a continuum of developmentally appropriate health education for our students. A second exciting change is the addition of STEM curriculum in grades K-12 in conjunction with the opening of the new Innovation Lab. We encourage you to join us at our July meeting to hear more about plans for STEM and Project Lead the Way. Attendance at our board meetings is welcomed and we are always eager to hear from you. Finally, we are excited to announce the addition of a new District support organization, Tiger Prep. Tiger Prep will serve as a resource to families of students with learning challenges. Providing a forum for parents and administration to network and collaborate furthers our goal to provide personalized learning. We remain thankful for the contributions from all our support organizations and the parent volunteer efforts that continue to help distinguish our District. We wish all our families a safe and enjoyable summer! Sharon Broz Member, Board of Education Chagrin Falls Exempted Village Schools

Chagrin Falls Schools Superintendents for the Day

Ever wonder what it’s like to be the Chagrin Falls Schools’ Superintendent? On April 28, Chagrin Falls’ students Nathan and Ryan Hill were fortunate enough to see for themselves what an average day looked like for Chagrin Falls Superintendent Robert Hunt. Last fall, at the 2015 Dads’ Club Halloween Ball, an auction was held with one of the items up for auction being “Student Superintendent for the Day.” The Hill family had the winning bid on the item and were able to give their children this opportunity. Nathan and Ryan were appointed to the position at the April Board of Education meeting. On April 28, the students began their day by attending the “RealizeU” breakfast in the Chagrin Falls PAC lobby. They witnessed many teachers being recognized by the district for going over and beyond for their

students. They even had the opportunity to give a speech about the importance of teachers in their lives. Nathan and Ryan met with the Superintendent Student Advisory Committee and provided feedback on district initiatives, visited all of the buildings to see their favorite staff, completed a full district dial out call informing parents of important district information, and even reviewed the design of the innovation lab renovation project, giving input into the carpet, cloth and wood selections for the interior. The students enjoyed meeting with the board president on the review of the agenda for the upcoming board meeting. They made the afternoon dismissal announcements at the high school and ended their day by attending the middle school’s staff meeting where they provided input on the necessary qualifications of the next principal.

Chagrin Falls Schools RealizeU Recognition Breakfast On April 28, teachers, students, parents, and administrators of Chagrin Falls Schools came together in the Performing Arts Center lobby to recognize 10 teachers who have inspired their students to reach their maximum potential. In expanding upon the district’s theme this year, RealizeU, principals selected students from each of their buildings to nominate a teacher who has made a difference in their lives. Those teachers were surprised during a breakfast presentation. The district unveiled the RealizeU campaign at the beginning of this school year. “RealizeU prioritizes our work toward personalizing learning and supporting each student in not only recognizing his/her potential, but also in acting upon it, or maximizing potential,” said Superintendent Robert Hunt. “Today, we recognize those educators and our K-12 commitment to each student...in an impactful, memorable, and inspirational way.” Congratulations to our educators who were nominated by their students for inspiring them to realize their maximum potential. Gurney Elementary: Rachel Gebler, Bradley Jones, Ellen Jones. Intermediate School: Lisa Janson, Polly Mitchell. Middle School: Kathleen Aranavage, Karen Phillips. High School: Joshua Maas, Carolyn Petite, Bobbie Serensky. And our student nominators: Frankie Ashkettle, Evan Castelluccio, Will Asplin, Liam Oettinger, Claire Coffey, Sasha Haines, Drew Zimmer, Laurel Jackson, Conrad Mitchell, and Emily King. Chagrin Falls Schools Update from Food Services Department By Marti Jacobson, MS, RD, LD, Food Services Supervisor The Food Service Department would like to thank you for your continued support. We request that you kindly attend to any negative lunch account balances by the end of SY 2015-16. Students starting SY 201617 with a negative lunch account balance will not be permitted to make purchases in the cafeteria until the negative balance is cleared up. The Life Time Foundation Grant at Gurney School has reached its third and final year. This grant afforded the Gurney kitchen the opportunity to experiment with cooking from scratch and to serve Gurney students only “clean-label” foods. Though we will no longer receive monetary funds from the Life Time Foundation, we will take what we learned during the past three years and extend it into the future at all school buildings. Every building’s kitchen will continue to cook many homemade favorites such as orange chicken, southwest cheesy chicken, and lasagna. At Gurney. we will substitute “no antibiotics ever”(NAE) chicken products made specifically for schools in place of the Bell & Evans chicken products we’ve served for the past three years. We have made the decision to not bring back the ice cream products that were offered to 2nd and 3rd graders prior to receiving the grant and intend

to be judicious about what snack items we offer children at this level. We’d like to thank the Gurney parents for their enthusiasm and support over the course of the grant. Over the summer the Food Service Department will be joining the rest of the district in its use of the Infinite Campus platform. Student and staff lunch accounts will be accessible through the Infinite Campus online and mobile portals. All lunch account balances that remain at the end of the school year will be transferred from our current system to Infinite Campus for you. The Infinite Campus platform allows parents more control over student lunch accounts by giving them the ability to establish spending limits and to block a la carte purchasing. Parents will also have the option to complete Free and Reduced Meal Applications online and to create family lunch accounts in place of individual student accounts. Stay tuned over the summer for more information. We look forward to these exciting changes and to serving you next year. Have a fantastic summer!

IMPORTANT LUNCH ACCOUNT INFORMATION The Food Service Department will be switching to the Infinite Campus Food Service platform over the summer. PARENTS WILL NOT HAVE ACCESS TO LUNCH ACCOUNTS IN www.myschoolacount.com AFTER FRIDAY, JUNE 3. All remaining lunch account balances will be transferred to Infinite Campus. Student lunch accounts will be accessible through Infinite Campus beginning Monday, August 1, 2016. More information to come.

Gurney Elementary Girl Scouts Give Back to School with Buddy Bench Students at Gurney Elementary School now have a new addition to their recess area – a Buddy Bench. A Buddy Bench is a bench that helps create friendship on the playground. Students looking for a buddy to play with can simply sit on the bench to alert others that he or she is looking for a playmate. Girl Scout Troop 819, comprised of 13 Gurney Elementary second grade Brownie Girl Scouts, under the direction of Kim Stec, constructed the Buddy Bench for their “Better World for Girls” award. This award, along with the “Tell A Story” badge requires that the troop do something to educate and inspire others in their community to make it a better place. With this in mind, the girls decided a Buddy Bench for

the Gurney Playground was what they wanted to do. “The girls wanted to give back to Gurney by doing something special for the school they love,” said Troop Mother Kim Stec. “We’re going to spread the message of inclusion and kindness with the bench, a very Girl Scouty thing to do!” The Troop has been together since they were in Kindergarten and have just graduated from Daisy Scouts to Brownie Scouts. Using the money they raised from the Girl Scout Cookie sale, they are proud to have completed the Gurney Elementary Buddy Bench as their first project as Brownie Scouts.

Chagrin Falls Intermediate School “Make a Difference Project” Makes Huge Impact Students in Katherine Owen’s language arts classes at Chagrin Falls Intermediate School were challenged this year to complete a “Make a Difference” project. Sixth grader Celia Hawk decided to set up a “Little Free Library” for the CFIS school cafeteria, where students in grades 4-6 could stop by to take a book to read and leave a book for others. After discussing the project with Principal Sarah Read, Celia learned that students at JM Gallagher School on Cleveland’s near westside were in the process of building their own Little Free Library in a new community garden located next to the school. Celia decided to collect new and gently used books to donate to Gallagher School to help them stock it. On May 12, Celia and Mrs. Read went to Gallagher School to drop off the books. Irma Huston, who runs the after school tutoring and reading club, and Michele Sommerfelt, who organized and created the reading garden and free library at Gallagher, held a reception after school to accept the books. At this reception Celia and three friends (Emily Nemunaitis, Aleeta Cowan, and Delainey Wyville) met with Gallagher students to talk about the Gallagher School’s book club selection, “The Doll People.” Celia was presented with all the books in “The Doll People” series to bring back to the CFIS library. All the book club members and the students from Chagrin brought dolls to the reception and read from the books.

Gurney Elementary First Graders Learn about Plant Life Cycle with Lettuce Garden First grade students in Mrs. Julie Albrecht’s class have been putting their green thumbs to the test in their aeroponic Garden Tower. The students grew a variety of lettuces such as bibb, romaine, swiss chard, spring mix and basil. Over a period of five weeks, students kept a digital journal on their own plant’s growth and changes. Right before spring break, students harvested their produce and had a “tasting party” which included Mrs. Laura Vilt from the Gurney cafeteria creating green healthy smoothies for them. “The overall goal is for students to learn about the plant life cycle, thinking like a scientist and improve healthy eating habits,” said Albrecht. “Research shows that when children grow their own vegetables and fruit they are more likely to eat it and improve eating habits.”

Chagrin Falls Middle and High School Heart Safe School Accreditation Received On May 11, Chagrin Falls Middle and High Schools received the Heart Safe School Accreditation from the SADS (Sudden Arrhythmia Death Syndromes) Foundation. In order to achieve accreditation, the schools have to go through a program consisting of seven elements aimed at raising awareness and preventing cardiac arrest. The seven elements include students being given a screening/risk assessment to complete at home with their families; those students with a cardiac diagnosis create care plans for them both at

home and at school; schools conduct at least three emergency medical response drills a year; Automatic External Defibrillators (AED) are no further than 90 seconds from any point in the building; students and staff receive CPR training; a sudden cardiac awareness activity, event or fundraiser is held. The first school was accredited in 2013. There are currently 38 schools in five states accredited but Chagrin Falls is the first school in Northeast Ohio to achieve the accreditation. Chagrin Falls will hold the accreditation for three years during which they are required to provide documentation regarding how they are continuing to meet the seven elements.

ALMA MATER

As the mist lifts high above us In the valley view, There you stand, our Alma Mater Clear and brave and true. May we always keep your honor, Keep your standards high, Hold your memories always with us As the years go by.

Tho in time our paths may lead us Far across the sea, Still our love will bind us ever Hand in hand with thee. Proudly singing of your honor, Cry above the din Praise to thee, our Alma Mater Praise to thee, Chagrin.

Congratulations to the Class of 2016 from Chagrin Falls Booster Club, Dads’ Club, Educational Foundation, Music Lovers, and PTO

Innovation Center Campaign The misfits. The rebels. The ones who see things differently. We believe they’re our future. And the future is happening now, but we need your help. Chagrin Falls Educational Foundation has teamed up with Chagrin Schools to create a new Innovation Center which will create a flexible learning environment for our students that will integrate technology, foster their creativity and encourage them to reach beyond the traditional educational boundaries. The Innovation Center itself will be 4,300 square feet housing three distinct yet interconnected spaces, including: • • • •

a Research Center to foster idea creation and study. a Collaboration Classroom where we’ll force collisions between students and faculty in small group discussions within the school, and beyond the borders of Chagrin Falls with connected technologies. a Maker’s Space to bring students’ ideas to life with 3D printers, embroidery machines, laser cutters, tools and more, called the Fab Lab. and finally other STEM, robotic and entrepreneurship programming district-wide.

We want to groom future researchers, collaborators and creators by providing the environment for this progressive approach to teaching and learning. The district’s goal is to foster and develop the innovators of tomorrow. Please join us now in making a gift. Our support will make a positive and lasting impact on students’ experiences in learning, giving them the skills they need to thrive in college and beyond and in uncovering their passion to be innovators, creators and creative thinkers.
