Sweeney Todd

This renowned theater company brings a classic of English literature to the stage, featuring one of fiction’s most tempestuous romances. Set in a farmhouse on the stormy Yorkshire moors, this epic saga follows the turbulent life-long relationship between Catherine, daughter of Mr. Earnshaw, and Heathcliff, an orphan who is taken in by her benevolent father. The ill-fated pair develops an inseparable bond as children, but Catherine eventually chooses comfort and security over love, and marries a man of high social standing, leaving Heathcliff tormented and vengeful. The sole work of Emily Brontë, this riveting tale of passion, revenge, family, social class, and the supernatural is performed by acclaimed British-American touring company Aquila Theatre.

Virginia Opera’s 40th season opens with Sondheim’s smash hit and Tony Award-winning musical thriller about revenge, murder and meat pies. This is the deliciously disturbing tale of Sweeney Todd, the demon barber of Fleet Street whose idyllic life was utterly destroyed by a corrupt and lecherous judge. Bitter and angry, Todd teams up with shop owner Mrs. Lovett to gratify his insatiable need for revenge while providing her with a steady supply of meat for her thriving pie business. Their gruesome scheme works — until Todd’s past catches up with him. Filled with Sondheim’s wonderful melodies, brilliant lyrics, and a twisting plot of lost innocence and evil, this work is a devilishly good time. Performed in English with English supertitles.

Silent Night

This gripping detective murder mystery, based on the best-selling novel, is a vivid portrayal of the black experience in the deep South during the 1960s. This powerful story, brought to our stage by America’s premier radio theater company, begins on a steamy August night in a small Southern town, where the body of a wealthy white man is discovered. Police arrest a black stranger passing through town for the murder, only to learn that he is a respected homicide detective. The College of Visual and Performing Arts The Center for the Arts is proud to be part of George Mason University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA), supporting and enriching the student experience with worldclass performances throughout the academic year and a state-of-the art venue for student performances. They perform, create and exhibit work in a wide variety of public venues on campus ranging from the Center for the Arts Concert Hall to the intimate TheaterSpace and the Fine Art Gallery. In addition, students are able to refine their art in several major new facilities including the Art and Design Building, the de Laski Performing Arts Building, and the newly renovated Music and Theater Building on the Fairfax campus as well as the magnificent Hylton Performing Arts Center on the Prince William campus.
