Geology and Geomorphology
Geológicamente, las formaciones más antiguas (320 a 400 millones de años atrás) son metamórficas, del periodo Devónico- Carbonífero. Las formaciones volcánicas y sedimentarias son del periodo Jurásico (140 millones de años atrás), y se presentan en la zona Andina central de Aysén, rica en ignimbritas, riolitas y dacitas. El oeste y la costa Oceánica son en gran medida metamórfica, con muchos vestigios de actividad tectónica. Aysén es famosa por el “triple punto”, la unión de las placas de Nazca, Sudamericana y Antártica. La actividad volcánica reciente destaca la erupción del Volcán Hudson en 1991 y el Volcán Chaitén en 2008. De particular interés son las formaciones de mármol del Jurásico en el Lago General Carrera y los yacimientos paleontológicos de la formación Guadal.
Geologically, the oldest formations are metamorphic from the Devonian and Carboniferous period, (320 to 400 million years ago). The volcanic and sedimentary formations from the Jurassic period (140 million years ago), rich in rhyolitic and dacitic ignimbrites are found in the central Andean areas of Aysén. The west and Oceanic coast is largely metamorphic with many traces of tectonic activity. Aysén is famous for the “triple point”, the junction of the Nazca, South American and Antarctic plates. Recent volcanic activity includes the eruptions of the Hudson Volcano in 1991 and the Chaiten Volcano in 2008. Of particular interest are the Jurassic marble formations in General Carrera Lake and the paleontological sites of the Guadal Formations.

Los numerosos glaciares que hoy fluyen desde los Campos de Hielo Patagónicos continúan modelando como hace miles de años el paisaje de la región. Aunque la mayoría de ellos han estado retrocediendo desde su extensión máxima histórica (12 a 19 mil años atrás) continúan jugando un rol crucial en la hidrología y biología de Aysén.
Numerous glaciers flowing from the Northern Patagonian Ice Cap continue to shape the landscape. Although most glaciers in the region have been receding from their historical maximum extent (12 to 19 thousand years ago) they continue to play a crucial role in the hydrology and biology of Aysén.
Las precipitaciones, que varían de 6.000 mm en la costa y campos de hielo a solo 300 mm en la frontera, son claves para determinar los 5 distintos hábitats de Aysén: La Zona Marino Costera, El Bosque Siempreverde al oeste, El Bosque Caducifolio desde el oeste al centro, La Estepa Patagónica al este y La Alta Montaña (en altitudes sobre los 700 m).
Precipitation, varying from 6.000 mm on the coast and ice caps, to only 300 mm on the border is the key factor in the 5 distinct habitats; The Coastal Marine Zone, The Evergreen Forest to the west, The Deciduous Forest from west to centre and The Patagonian Steppes to the east, at altitudes of over 700 m the habitat is considered High Mountain.

A brief history of exploration and colonization of Aysén Prior to the XVI century the coasts of Aysén were inhabited by two indigenous groups; the Chonos in the north and the Kaweshkars in the south while to the east of the Andes lived the Tehuelches, nomadic hunters of the prairies and foothills around the great lakes. From 1520, when Hernando de Magallanes discovered the Golfo de Penas, explorers such as Francisco de Ulloa, Juan Ladrillero and the Jesuit missionaries travelled along the coast in search of the mythical “City of the Cesars”.

During the XVIII century numerous military, geographical and scientific expeditions took place: Anson and Byron in 1741, Moraleda in 1793, Fitz Roy and Darwin in 1832 and more recently Hudson, Steffen, Shipton and Grosse. As of the beginning of the XX century the region saw a rapid development of extensive cattle farming and the colonization of the principal valleys by homesteaders, many arriving along the coast from Chiloe and others via Argentina from the central – southern areas of Chile. Large agricultural societies of foreign and national investors also significantly impacted the agricultural development of the region. 2000

Aysén continues to be a region characterized by its wild geography and variety of landscapes including extensive - untouched forests, uninhabited islands, snow and ice covered mountains, swift flowing clean rivers, extensive wetlands and pampas. Public infrastructure is basic and towns are only recently becoming “connected”.

Close to 105.000 people live in Aysén, an area of 108.494 km2. More than 80% currently reside in the 2 larger cities of the region. 48% of the region is government protected parks and reserves. Experiencia en investigación científica Desde el año 2005, el Centro de Investigación en Ecosistemas de la Patagonia- CIEP, ha tenido como punto focal la investigación científica en Aysén, Patagonia. Continuity of research The need to re-visit monitoring stations for data retrieval and maintenance is a task that does not always require the presence of the scientists conducting the research project. We can work with you to provide that service in accordance with your protocols. Volunteers and financial support for research In certain cases we are able to find volunteers interested in participating in your research. Volunteers not only help with the work load but also help to finance some of the logistical costs of your investigation.

Objetivos: Volver a trazar las expediciones históricas de los primeros exploradores en Aysén, desde Simpson en 1870 a través de Grosse en 1940 y Shipton en 1960.
Objectives: Retrace the historic expeditions of early explorers in Aysén from Simpson in 1870 through Grosse in the 1940s and Shipton in the 1960s.
Descripción: Los viajes se realizan combinando caminata, navegación y cabalgatas, con el fin de seguir las rutas que los primeros exploradores describieron a través de mapas, fotografías, relatos y videos. Así podremos comprobar la evolución de los paisajes y el impacto humano en el tiempo que de otra forma es muy difícil conocer.
Description: Each trip is different – some predominantly by foot, others by horseback and some by boat or a combination of all three. Each program seeks the routes followed by early explorers that were described through photography, documents, films and writing. This will enable us to compare conditions, evolution of the landscape and human impact over time that we would otherwise be unaware of.

Objetivo: Monitorear la población de focas, identificar y monitorear especies de delfines y grupos específicos. Identificar individuos y registrar lenguaje de sonidos de cetáceos.
Objectives: Monitor seal populations, identify and monitor dolphin species and specific groups. Identify individuals and record cetacean communication.
Descripción: Navegando en un confortable velero o embarcación a motor, podremos visitar colonias de focas y áreas conocidas por ser frecuentadas por delfines. Se realiza censo visual y se comparan registros fotográficos anteriores con la realidad observada de grupos e individuos. Los sonidos de delfines y ballenas son grabados para su posterior análisis y estudio en el Instituto Max Planck de Alemania. La mayor parte del tiempo es a bordo de la 7 > 15 embarcación, pero se aprovechan todas las ocasiones Días Days para explorar aisladas playas y visitar caletas y pueblos del archipiélago. Description: Navigating in a motor or sailing boat we will visit a number of seal colonies and areas known to be frequented by dolphins. Research is based on a visual census and observation with photo ID records of both groups and individuals. Dolphins and whale sounds are recorded for further analysis and study in the Max Planck institute. Most of the time is spent on board although every opportunity to explore isolated beaches, coves and villages is taken advantage of. Activity Type and Level: Sailing and observation – low physical demand but some long days and harsh weather conditions.

Description: These programs are typically the result of an on-going program of study in schools or universities that benefit from some hands on experience. Aysén has a blend of very isolated, subsistence farming and a culture deeply rooted in the land but is challenged by some potentially major industrial initiatives. Objetivo: Llevar a cabo prospección y sondeos arqueológicos, intercambiar nuevas prácticas y técnicas de investigación entre científicos y estudiantes extranjeros y Chilenos.

Descripción: Voluntarios de Chile y el extranjero trabajan juntos bajo la supervisión de reconocidos científicos del CIEP o Universidades asociadas. Los participantes integran equipos de prospección con el fin de identificar y caracterizar sitios. Se espera descubrir nuevos sitios. Las principales metas son determinar el tipo de uso del territorio por parte de poblaciones indígenas. Description: Volunteers from both Chile and abroad work alongside one another under the supervision of recognized scientists from CIEP and partnered universities. Participants will be part of a research team in order to identify and characterize sites. It is expected that several new sites will be discovered. Principle goals are to establish the permanency and use of the territory by the indigenous populations. Most days will be spent outside in the forest and surrounding areas whilst cataloging will be completed in an established base camp.

Descripción: Un programa tipo consiste en el viaje de un pequeño grupo de voluntarios a un sector definido, por ejemplo las montañas del valle Jeinemeni, una reserva nacional cercana a Chile Chico, para apoyar la investigación de arqueólogos especialistas en pinturas rupestres. Acompañados por un científico y un guía local, el grupo organizará una serie de excursiones de senderismo para visitar las posibles cuevas, afloramientos y paredes de rocas. Se espera que los voluntarios ayuden con el trabajo de campo, incluyendo cocinar, limpiar y asistir a los arqueólogos en las tareas de investigación.
Description: A small group of volunteers will travel into a predetermined area such as the Jeneimeni reserve close to Chile Chico to support archeologists and specialists in cave paintings. Accompanied by the scientists and a local guide the team will organize a series of hiking excursions in order to visit the likely caves, outcrops and boulders. Volunteers are expected to help with camp work and to assist the archeologists in their research.

Objetivos: Determinar el número y composición de los grupos de cóndores en la cuenca del río Simpson.
Objectives: Establish the numbers and group composition of Condors in the Simpson river watershed.
Descripción: Los Cóndores (vulture gryphus) son comunes en la Patagonia, pero se conoce muy poco acerca de sus patrones de movilidad o la composición de los grupos presentes en la cuenca del río Simpson. Al visitar varios sitios de nidificación a lo largo del año podemos reunir la información necesaria para identificar cambios poblacionales 1>6 y rastrear individuos. El programa incluye caminatas por Días Days sectores de montaña y visitas a estancias en la pampa.
Description: Condors (vulture gryphus) are a common sight in Patagonia but little is known about their patterns of movement or the composition of the groups present in this area. By visiting several roosting sites throughout the year we aim to gather the information necessary to be able to monitor changes in the condor population and trace individuals. The program involves hiking through mountainous areas and visits estancias on the “pampas”.

Objetivos: Monitorear los cambios ocurridos a 3 diferentes tipos de glaciares en los Campos de Hielo Norte Patagónicos.
Objectives: Monitor the changes occurring to 3 different types of glacier on the Northern Ice Cap.
Descripción: Hemos observado durante los últimos 10 años, acelerados cambios en los glaciares que visitamos con mayor frecuencia. Este programa busca obtener datos exactos para entender qué está pasando. Tomando mediciones regulares de posición, tasa de derretimiento y lecturas climáticas; podemos contribuir al modelamiento de los cambios que están ocurriendo y apoyar la pre1>8 Días Days dicción de futuras situaciones. Description: We have noticed, during the last 10 years, some rapid changes to the glaciers that we most frequently visit. This program is aimed at gathering reliable data to understand what is occurring. By taking regular measurements of position, rate of melt and climate readings we contribute to the modeling of changes taking place and support predictions of future events and situations. Activity Type and Level: Hiking over rough ground and ice, open boat journeys and camping.
