HUMBER’S AWARDS PROGRAM—INNOVATIONS OF THE YEAR

PURPOSE The purpose of the Innovation of the Year Awards is to recognize college employees who have designed and implemented significant innovations that positively impact the education of students at Humber College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning.

ELIGIBILITY Employees from all employee groups (full and part-time faculty, administrators, and support personnel) are eligible for nomination.

CRITERIA The major criterion for nomination is that the innovation has a positive impact on the students’ educational process. Additional criteria to be used for judging the merit of an innovation and its impact on students’ education are: yy Creativity—The innovation should be as original as possible or be a unique adaptation of an existing program, process or concept. yy Effectiveness—There is evidence that the innovation leads to a better process for accomplishing a task. yy Replication—The significant components of the innovation can be replicated in other institutions with a minimal amount of difficulty. (The description of the innovation should include any conditions necessary for replication.) yy Timeliness—The innovation must have been in existence long enough to have been tested. yy Value Addition—There is evidence that the innovation adds value to, or improves, student education. yy Currency—There is evidence that the innovation is current in content and adaptive to technological application as appropriate.

LEAGUE FOR INNOVATION IN THE COMMUNITY COLLEGE AWARD

HumberOnline.Solutions

Hanadi Alnawab, Faculty of Business

HumberOnline.Solutions connects multidisciplinary teams of Humber students and faculty with small businesses in Ontario to develop digital solutions to support their online needs. With the support of Humber’s Applied Research and Innovation, Hanadi Alnawab took the lead and successfully applied for funding from the Ontario Centres of Excellence. The program engages students and professors from across Humber: the Faculty of Business, the Faculty of Media and Creative Arts and the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Sciences and Innovative Learning are all involved. Teams of Humber students work collaboratively on solving real business problems by working directly with a business owner. The program offers services ranging from website development, graphic design and brand development through to professional writing and communications. By also providing training for longterm sustainability and maintenance of the website, the program creates a truly unique and valuable opportunity for small businesses. These hands-on industry experiences are key for students, but they also foster economic growth in Ontario by providing small businesses with sustainable digital solutions.

INNOVATION OF THE YEAR

Implementation of Cyberbahn Platform and Fast Company Software for Corporate Law Procedure course

Farah Jamal Karmali, Faculty of Business

Farah Jamal Karmali, partnered with two industry leaders to provide law clerk students with cutting-edge “hands on experiential learning. For the Corporate Procedures Law Clerk class, Karmali collaborated with Cyberbahn to give students mock access to the ONBIS database and the ability to incorporate companies or perform other law clerk functions as if they were on the job. Karmali also worked with industry leader Do Process to provide Humber students with free access to Fast Company, the dominant corporate database and document production software in the legal market. Students can now create minute books using this software, just as they would on the job. These innovations provide greatly enhanced, 21st-century learning experiences for Humber law clerk students, and give them a distinct advantage in the marketplace.
