With the demise of Windows 7, maybe it’s time for a change? Linux has been around since the mid-1990s when Linus Torvalds, then studying Computer Science at Helsinki University, began a personal project to create a new operating system because he wanted to use his own hardware and extend its capabilities. Since then Linux has grown into a ser ious contender for running desktops, servers, and embedded systems across the globe.Did you know that as of January 2020, Windows 7 is no longer supported by Microsoft? Meaning no more security updates! Linux is everywhere: It’s on our phones, in our cars, refrigerators, and smart TV’s. Most Internet ser vers, all the world’s top 500 supercomputers, and the world’s stock exchanges all run on Linux. Undeniably Linux is one of the most reliable, secure and headache-free operating systems available. Here are some reasons why it is worthwhile considering Linux.

system requirements, as little as 128 MB RAM. In fact some Linux Distros can run off a USB stick. Better updating process. Updates in Linux is like a breath of fresh air unlike Windows updates which are really painful. How many times have you had the dreaded blue screen with a message like “preparing to configure Windows, do n ot shut down your system” and the wait begins. With Linux, you are regularly notified that systems, applications and security updates are a vailable. Updating in desktop Linux is a matter of one click – that’s it! Software repository. Linux has it’s own software repository. Any software installed from the repository will be safe, compatible with your OS and will be immediately setup for automatic updates.

It’s free – and always will be. Linux is absolutely free, you don’t pay for it or the applications you want to use. It is a free download, the installation is relatively straightfor ward, you can make copies of it to give it to your frie nds, family and colleagues. More Secure, no need of any antivirus. Linux is built for security. No need for antivirus software in Linux, al l you need to do is make sure you keep your Linux updated. Linux never asks for information to be sent to them in the event of any issue – we have all seen the screen asking for permission to gather data – I wonder what other data they collect? Keep your old computer alive. Other op erating systems typically require at least 1GB of RAM. But running on that minimum is sure to render it slow and frustratingly unusable. Worse, if your computer’s configuration doesn’t meet the minimum criteria you will have no option but to buy a new device. But don’t throw your old computer out just yet. Linux comes with very low 8

“Portugal. The Man” What’s in a Name?

T

he winner of the Best Pop Group Performance at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards was the band “Portugal. The Man”. Their winning song was “Fee l it Still” an d has been a m assive hit during the last t wo years. It has a fantastic beat and dominated the radio station playlists and, indeed, we often hear it still. But what about that name – “Portugal. T he Man”? Let’s ask a few questions... The group is Portuguese, right? Wrong! So, the The Man is one guy? Nope, there are four. OK, they have some connection with Portugal? Wrong again, originally from Alaska and now live in Portland, Oregon. So, nothing to do with Portugal, then! We’ll just have to ask the band to explain...

Q: As our readers live in Portugal, we’re wondering what that name means? Band: It’s an interesting name, I guess. It is kind of an alter ego like Ziggy Stardust and Sgt Pepper. It’s our character to represent us as a band. In picking a country’s name, Portugal just came to mind as one name that represents a group of people. It made sense for a while, but we have regretted it ever since that day (laughs). Q: Is there a reason for the pronunciation and spelling of Portugal, period, the Man? Band: We did that to state that Portugal was the man’s name and he is the man; he’s the sh*t. Hmm, well, I suppose we’re sorry we asked now. Moral of the story: forget the name, just listen to the fab music!

One Jump Ahead Some people think of the Algarve as Sun, Sand and....what is the third one? However, for those of us who live here we know there is a plethora of opportunities whether sporting, social or cultural.

I

t is just a case of finding out what is on. For the keen eques trian in the Algarve we have a great choice of diff erent types of riding centres to choose from, areas of different scenery for rid es out, and also some top class competitions to enjoy as a spectator. Only a 10 minute drive away, in Vilamoura, there are various International Show Jumping events held during the year at the Vilamoura Equestrian Centre, which is located on the west side of the resort. The owner, António Moura, has gradually invested over the years to upgrade the facilities. In the Spring, the Atlantic Tour from 28th January to 8th March averaged 1,300 horses during the period! This is a real treat for the spectator to see top class equines benefiting from the well designed courses and gaining exper ience for the season ahead. As well as a little retail therapy, you can join the “jet set” of the show jumping world watching the classes from the restaurant decking over a glass of wine. My preferred day is Sunday afternoon when they have the Grand Prix. I advise you to look up the location on line to verify the directions as it is not so easy to find and see the programme timings.

Incidentally there is no entry charge for spectators. In July (20th - 26th ) they will hold the European Championships for Young Riders. This is a wonderful opportunity for the riders of tomorrow to gain valuable competition experience. In the Autumn there is also a prestigious event, the Champions Tour, with 3* and 4* star level competition, from 8th October to 15th November. Many of our clients at Pinetrees plan their holiday to incorporate a visit to Vilamoura and also to enjoy a spot of riding themselves. Whether training in the arena, working on improving your skills or enjoying the tranquillity of the forest trails and admiring nature within the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve, we will look after you. We have riders from 4 to 70 and can even kit you out in all the gear for the ride. So, whether a complete beginner, a nervous novice, or wishing to prepare for Vilamoura, Pinetrees will look after you. Beverley Gibbons www.pinetrees.pt Map reference C3

FEELING CONFUSED? COMMON GOLF TOURNAMENT F O R M AT S

T

he thing about golf, unlike football, soccer, and rugby, is that it has a variety of formats and rules to play by. Each has its own set of rules and scoring. There’s Match play, Stroke Play, Stableford and a few others. Feeling a bit confused? Golf tournament formats are easier to grasp than you ma y think. Golf Tournament Formats Basically, there are 5 types of golf tournament formats you should know about if you’re to play the sport. Each tournament format is played in a different way, for example, you may play as an individual or in a team. The scoring is what ultimately differentiates each format from another. If you’re heading into a tournament as a newcomer, it’s always a good idea to try to get off early in the morning so you have more time to get to grips with the format that you’re playing. 1. Match Play The Match Play format is where two players play each hole as its own separate contest against each other. The one wit h the lowest score wins that particular hole. It is irrelevant how many shots it took to complete the hole, provided that your shots were less than your opponents. So, you can win a Match Play tournament with Double Bogeys throughout, if the opposing team has hit all Triple Bogeys! At the end of Match Play, the team that won the most holes will win the game. 2. Stroke Play Stroke or Medal Play is the most widely used tournament format at a competition level in golf. Each player competes as an individual. The player totals the number of shots taken

26

for the whole round. Aplayer can deduct his handicap from his gross score in order to get a 'net score'. At the end of the tournament, the player with the lowest net score wins the game. 3. Scramble Format A four-ball can choose the best shot from the group's series of hits. Basically, all four players will tee o ff and the players within that team then get to decide which shot was best and play from the position of that ball. This is how the game progresses on each hole until the round is finished. 4. Best Ball Format The Best Ball format is played in teams, and will have the basis of match or stroke play as the underlying rules. Each player within a team will play with their ow n ball for the duration of the round. After each hole, the best score from the team is taken. Sometimes, with teams that have four players, the top two scores are used to determine the score. At the end of the tournament, the team with the lowest scores will be determined the winner as it would be in stroke play. 5. Bingo-Bango-Bongo Bingo-Bango-Bongo is basically golf’s form of the popular game Bingo. You get a point for the following accomplishments: The first player in the four-ball to land on the putting green receives 1 point. The player who is closest to the pin in the four-ball, once all other players are on the green receives 1 point. The first player to get their ball in the cup receives 1 point. id you know tha t chillies have a variety of health benefits f or us? It’s amazing that they are proved to improve our digestive tract as well as promote a healthy heart! Peppers provide trace amounts of antioxidants and other chemicals to aid digestive issues such as healing an upset stomach, reducing bloating, curing diarrhea and actin g as a natural remedy for cramps. Spicy chillies can increase our metabolic rate because they promote thermogenic processes in our body, this process is what helps our body to burn excess calories. Eating a chilli with your breakfast can also suppress your appetite for the rest of the day which can aid in your weight loss journey. Hot peppers are full of antioxidants that will support your immun e system and aid in fighting off colds and the flu. Certain research has found that the increased body temperature resulting from the ingestion of chillies can trigger your immune system into fighting off these viruses. The kicker? Considering that chillies have such great antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, researchers have entered them into cancer fighting studies. So far, they’ve found out that ingesting chillies can reduce the growth of prostate cancer cells and leave normal cel ls unharmed. Not only do they aid in fighting prostate cancer, but the studies also showed that the consumption of larger quantities of peppers can be effective in the fight against breast, pancreatic and bladder cancer! Generally, this refers to the ingestion of about 8 habanero chillies per week. 30

Soul and Jazz in the Algarve M

illions of music lovers throughout the world have fallen in love with the sounds of Jazz, Funk and Soul music. This kind of music can take over your entire body, mind and, excuse the pun, soul. For some, soul and jazz can bring to mind visions of Afro hairstyles, bell-bottom trousers, disco balls and wacky dance moves. For those of us who love the genre though, where do we find this type of music on The Algarve? Our first step along our search for jazz, funk and soul brings us to a small establishment in the hills above Boliqueime. At Jax Bar , you can find yourself surrounded by ten different nationalities at once, enjoying a cold beer and tapping your foot to the sweet sounds of Jax herself on the saxophone. Whether it’s prawns or pizza you’re after, Aretha or Al Green, Jax Bar is the place to be. Fo llow their Facebook page facebook.com/jaxbaralgarve to keep up to date with events.

in addition to the concert, wine tasting, tapas, a voucher to visit Silves Castle and Municipal Museum of Archeology and a bottle of wine), the trip is totally worth it. With performances on different weeks by various artists, you’re sure to get your groove on. You can find more information at: www.cm-silves.pt. Don’t fancy the drive out? With spring in the air and the weather warming up, lighting up the barbecue and spending afternoons outside sounds like a grand idea. What’s missing? The sound of that funk, jazz and soul filling the air. If you’re stayi ng in, then you need to head on over to Soul Spectrum Radio , a new digital, online radio station dedicated to all us jazz, soul and funk music lovers from all around the world. Soul Spectrum Radio was created by Mark Sebastian.

Further up into th e hills, our trip takes you into the municipality of Silves. Ever heard of Jazz in the Wine Cellar ?

Passionate about soul music, Mark decided to launch the radio station. Previously a familiar voice on London’s airwaves working for the capitals Choice and Jazz FM, he now also presents the Kiss FM ‘Drive Time Show’ in Portugal.

The concert runs from October right through until the end of May, featuring many differe nt performers. At only 12€ per ticket (includes,

Did you know that Alte, a quaint little town not far from the Central Algarve, is famous for being the home of the poet, Candido Guerreiro? The town itself can be found a short 20 minute drive from the Central Algarve region, heading inland. Alte is home to the literary walk of Candido Guerreiro. If you park as close as you can to t h e f o n t e i n t h e c e n t r e o f A l t e , y o u ’l l be at the start of the literary walk. Each plaque is accompanied with a QR code that guides the walker through the poetic delights of Candido. With the beautiful poems displayed in traditional Portuguese tile designs.

Candido was born in Alte in 1871, and died in Lisbon in 1953. Not only was he a poet, but a lawyer and a notary in the Loule area for many years. Would you Risk your Life for ‘Lucifer’s Fingers’? Portuguese fishermen risk life and limb to harvest goose barnacles.

K

no w n a s Perc e bes i n P o rtu g u e s e , t he s e s e a f ood d e l i caci e s are g i ve n tw o ra t h e r m or e il l u s tri o u s name s i n Eng l i sh : G oos e Barnacl e s o r L u ci fe r’s Fin g e rs. It is said that sailors once suspected, due to their gooseneck shape, that these crustaceans

the head and anyone could drown ’, cautions one of the rock-scarred locals. Working in pairs for safety (although safety may not be the right word!), some descend ropes and try to keep a foothold at the base o f the slippery cliffs. Others approach by boat and risk the full might of the ocean dashing them on the rocks. Either way, it’s not for the faint-hearted. Even so, many of the fishermen would still argue that the risk is worth the prize. The daily harvest is restricted to 15kg per diver, with prices reaching between €30 and €60/kg depending on the quality and size. The barnacles are boiled in salt water for no more than a minute, or more traditionally – the time it takes to recite the lord’s prayer. They can be eaten hot or cold, and the more simply, the better. When told that celebrity chef Gordon Ramsey serves the barnacles in a creamy sauce, the locals threw their arms in the air. Enough said!

eventually grew into Barnacle Geese. Needless to say, that was before the days of Charles Darwin. The nickname Lucifer’s Fingers does not require any explanation beyond seeing a plate of them! These scaly creatures are most abundant i n the tidal areas close to Sagres (far-west Algarve) where fisherman pry them off the rocks whilst taking a pounding from the waves. ‘ One bang on

58

If you see Percebes on the menu, you should give them a try – there is nothing to compare that could bring the taste of the ocean so evocatively to your palate. As a footnote, this fishermen’s frien d is not so appreciated by sailors. Barnacles, amongst other creatures and plants, will foul the hull of any boat left in the water. In severe cases, this will dramatically affect the performanc e and, as you may imagine, are difficult to remove.

Brexit Withdrawal Agreement How does this affect British Expatriates?

N

ow that Brexit has finally happened, we are in the transition stage which is plan ned to end on 31 Dec 2020. All Brits who become resident in an EU country before that date will have their rights pro tected under the Withdrawal Agreement for life.

to obtain a S1 form from the UK which will also provide the right to a European Health Insurance Card. Any temporary eligibility regarding pensions and health have now been replaced with lifetime rights under the Withdrawal Agreement.

This will be unaffected by whatever the UK and the EU agree upon as a longer term deal.

So what’s not covered in the Withdrawal Agreement? As we have seen, for most British residents, little seems to have changed. However, there are a few notable differ ences:

Therefore, if no agreement on a future relationship is reached, the UK and EU could default to World Trade Organisation rules. However, the Withdrawal Agreement itself would continue as an international treaty in its own right and we may be covered by it for the rest of our lives. This means that expatriates effectively retain the same rights as they did before Brexit, although this only applies to the host country in which we live, Portugal. Naturally, this assumes that anyone who has not registered their residency should do so before the end of the year. Residents who have been here less than 5 years can still be absent abroad for up to 6 months each time. After 5 years they are entitled to become permanent residents of Portugal and retain their rights after absences of up to 5 years. Anyone working in Portugal and paying social security will have automatic rights to health care and other welfare benefits. Others are advised

60

• Freedom of movement: This is still under negotiation. However, as things stand, you can spend up to 90 days in every 180 days in the Schengen area without requiring a visa or residency. • Cross border services: Unless you are registered as a frontier worker, you may not be able to offer your services beyond Portugal. • Professional Qualification: You should try to register your qualification in Portugal before 31 Dec 2020. • Future Spouses: If you wish to later return to the UK with a non-EU spouse, you may have to comply with more stringent UK rules. • Voting Rights: Many of the voting rights available to UK expats are being withdrawn. If you wish to read more about the effects of the Withdrawal Agreement, we recomm end the following website: https://britishineurope.org

Hydrogen is the missing link! Everyone seems to agree, we urgently need clean, low-carbon energy. Otherwise, we will have no solution to climate change, which is already the biggest global health threat of the 21st century.

W

ith India and China burning enormous quantities of coal, and even Germany is currently bringing online a new coal-fired power sta tion in 2020, we need to urgently change our sources of energy. There is easily enough energy being generated by the sun, wind and waves. Yet, these energy sources are often far away from the cities which they need to power. For example, solar pane ls covering the Sahara desert could generate enough solar energy to meet the entire global demand. However, how could we connect to the rest of the world and then, perhaps even more difficult, store enough energy to keep everything going during the night? Those who are shouting “extra-long cables and a huge battery”, please bear with me. The answer is probably going to be hydrogen, the most abundant element in the universe. At wind and solar energy sites, excess electricit y not supplied directly to the power grid can be used to perform electrolysis to split water molecules into oxygen and hydrogen, with the hydrogen stored for later reuse, ensuring that not a single kilowatt-hour is wasted. This concept is already being demonstrated in Scotland’s Orkney Islands where tidal and wave generators create more clean electricity that its 21, 000 inhabitants need.

Even after exporting to the UK natio nal grid, the islands’ winds, waves and tides generate about 130% of the electricity required. That surplus energy no longer goes to waste, but produces hydrogen. This gas then powers the islanders’ cars and even the local ferry. This is not just a small, isolated project, but a vision shared by Japan’s government and its world-leading auto industry, which are together making a huge bet that hydrogen — rather than batteries — will provide power for the emission-free cars of the future. Starting with the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, they want to put millions of hydrogen vehicles onto the nation’s roads. Visitors to Tokyo may still find vehiclecongested roads, but the exhaust pipes will only produce a few drops of water, and the air will be clean! “Hydrogen, as both a primary source, and more importantly, a carrier of energy, must become cheaper and more easily affordable,” declared Japan’s prime minister Shinzo Abe in Davos this year. “My government is aiming to reduce the production cost of hydrogen by at least 90 per cent by the year 2050, to make it cheaper than natural gas.” Here in the Algarve, we can share th at vision. Surplus energy from our enormous solar potential could produce sufficient hydrogen to

run our vehicles and even sell to fund public services. If that plan becomes a reality, we’ll be well on the way to a clean and sustainable hydrogen economy. 62

Portugal Still Has Low Cost of Living Experts measured 132 countries by a range of living costs including accommodation, clothing, taxi fares, utilities, internet, groceries, transport, and eating out.

W

ithin the EU, Portugal (no.54) still represents great value – the only cheaper countries were the Eastern-bloc countries (who most recently joined). The UK (no.27), was classified as cheaper than the US or Canada but a little more expensive than Italy or Germany. As expected, at the top of the list, Switzerland and the Scandanavian countries continue to be eye-wateringly ex pensive.
