A WORD FROM EDWARD VILLELLA, FOUNDING ARTISTIC DIRECTOR...

L

ast year, our 25th, was a banner year - not only for its four Company premieres, climaxed by the tremendous artistic and popular success of John Cranko’s Romeo and Juliet, but for the unprecedented triumph of the Company in Paris this July. We had three weeks of sold-out performances of our repertory of fourteen ballets, all danced to roars of excitement and standing ovations. I’ve been touring with ballet companies for more than fifty years and have never seen anything like it.

This fall began with the television program GREAT PERFORMANCES: “Miami City Ballet Dances Balanchine and Tharp,” featuring Balanchine’s Square Dance and Western Symphony together with Tharp’s ‘The Golden Section,’ which aired October 28th to critical acclaim on PBS stations across the country.

Then we move on to our South Florida venues with a thrilling mix of old and new: two of the greatest 19th century classics, Giselle and Coppélia, together with such audience favorites as In the Night and In The Upper Room and, to my great personal pride, a new ballet we’ve commissioned from 25-year-old Liam Scarlett, the youngest choreographer ever invited to stage a ballet, from Britain’s Royal Ballet. When I saw his work in London, I grabbed him for us - his first commission in the U.S., but certainly not his last. It’s called Viscera, and its effect is definitely visceral.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT...

I

t is with great pride that I welcome you to Miami City Ballet’s 26th season! It all began with a triumph in Paris this past July where Edward and his company performed at the famed Théâtre du Châtelet. My wife Bobi and I were fortunate enough to be there to experience first-hand the marvel, the electricity, and the rapturous ovations from a thrilled audience. The 17 performances at Les Étés de la Danse were filled to 95.5% capacity, and concluded every evening with unprecedented acclaim from the city that is the birthplace of ballet. We all share in Edward’s pride and I heartily congratulate him and our world-class dancers for this achievement.

Program I of this season features four masterworks that captured the Parisian audience so passionately: George Balanchine’s Square Dance, Jerome Robbins’ Afternoon of a Faun, Christopher Wheeldon’s Liturgy, and Twyla Tharp’s In The Upper Room. The incomparable Opus One Orchestra will once again fill the house with gorgeous live music thanks to the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, Darla and John Karlton, and Trish and Dan Bell.

I also thank the following dedicated donors for joining Bobi and me in underwriting the ballets in Program I: Margaret and Mike Eidson, and Francinelee Hand and David Siegel as co-underwriters for Liturgy.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN...

W

elcome to Miami City Ballet’s 26th season! We are so delighted to be sharing a new season of high-caliber dance with our loyal and dedicated patrons and friends.

I want to take this opportunity to sing the praises of Edward Villella, whose dream it was to create a world-class ballet company. Twenty-six years later, his artistic vision and genius are still evident in every ballet he stages, and in every dancer he molds. These dancers have the unique honor and distinction of carrying Edward’s legacy. We have the benefit of enjoying the fruits of his labor—an internationally-acclaimed ballet company. Thank you, Edward!

This season will surely not disappoint. We are especially excited about our two new commissions: the first in Program II from Liam Scarlett, a young, fresh choreographer from The Royal Ballet, creating his first piece on an American company; and of course, the world premiere of Symphonic Dances by Alexei Ratmansky, the world’s most sought-after choreographer. The highly-anticipated premiere on March 1, 2012 will also showcase our collaboration with The Cleveland Orchestra, considered one of the “Big 5” symphonic ensembles in the United States. The Gala following the premiere will toast this historic artistic partnership for Miami City Ballet. Preparations are already underway for this momentous event. Our diverse programming features masters of ballet and choreography – past, present, and future. Ana-Marie & Robert Barlick • Ana Codina Barlick, Miami City Ballet’s board chairman and former board president, is a director of development for Codina Partners, a real estate development and investment firm based in Coral Gables. She was born and raised in Miami and has been attending MCB performances since the company's first program in 1986. Rob Barlick is originally from New York and is a vice president at Goldman Sachs Private Wealth Management. He is also deeply committed to the arts, having served as treasurer of the Adrienne Arsht Center Foundation board and as a member of the Arsht Center Endowment Investment Committee. Ana and Rob are the parents of two young children and both passionately believe in the power of the arts to inspire, uplift and improve our community.

Broward Cultural Division • Broward Cultural Division congratulates Miami City Ballet on the completion of its 25th anniversary season and on outstanding critical reviews following a successful Paris debut. Dr. Margaret & Mike Eidson • Dr. Margaret and Mike Eidson are proud to support one of the world’s most important ballet companies. In Miami City Ballet’s 26-year history, the Eidsons have seen every program, often attending the same program many times to see different company members dance solo roles. As former president and chairman for nine years, Mike has enjoyed working closely with the great Edward Villella and with the dedicated ballet staff. Margaret is now proud to serve on the ballet’s Board of Trustees. In addition to ballet, the Eidsons support many other nonprofit organizations. Mike serves as Chairman of the Adrienne Arsht Center and Margaret served on the University of Miami Medical School faculty for 25 years. Dr. Eidson and Mike Eidson underwrote an additional performance of Romeo and Juliet and the great Paul Taylor piece Promethean Fire in 2010-2011 and are proud to underwrite Liturgy in the 2011-2012 season. They continue to look forward to every production.

Charlene & Ron Esserman • Charlene and Ron Esserman have been strong supporters of Miami City Ballet since it began 26 years ago. “We were extremely excited when Edward Villella came to Miami because we knew that he would bring a world-class ballet program to South Florida. He has even exceeded our expectations.”

Mr. Esserman, a former president of Miami City Ballet, agrees with Edward Villella that no community can ever consider itself truly great unless it makes a strong statement in the arts. Mr. and Mrs. Esserman are strong supporters of many arts and quality endeavors including Adrienne Arsht Center, Florida Grand Opera, Coconut Grove Theatre, Actors Playhouse, Zoo Miami and many other world-class programs. Mr. Esserman has been in the automobile business for 42 years selling Acura, Honda, Kia, Nissan and Volkswagen vehicles. Marvin Ross Friedman & Adrienne bon Haes • Marvin Ross Friedman and Adrienne bon Haes are vigorously involved and substantial supporters of many cultural, charitable and philanthropic organizations, but none is closer to their heart than Miami City Ballet. They consider MCB to be the crown jewel in the cultural pantheon of our community. As long-time supporters of MCB, they applaud the genius of Edward Villella and the extraordinary virtuosity and sublime artistry of a company that has successfully brought world-class performances to South Florida’s stages. Marvin Ross Friedman, who also serves on MCB’s board, is a senior partner in the litigation law firm of Friedman & Friedman. He is listed in “The Bar Register of Preeminent Lawyers in the United States,” as well as “Guide to Leading American Attorneys.” In addition to his law career, for the past three decades he has been a respected private art dealer handling important modern master and contemporary works of art. Adrienne bon Haes is a multi-faceted artist and creative spirit.

Michele Herbert • Michele Herbert’s passion for dancing was nurtured during her ballet studies at the Metropolitan Opera Ballet School. She worked as a dancer, actress and TV talk show host, and appeared onstage in “The Sunshine Boys.” For nine years, Mrs. Herbert was co-chairman of The Children’s Advocacy Center, now New York Center for Children, a privately-funded child abuse center, and for 19 years served on the board of directors, and now the advisory council of The School of American Ballet. She is on the steering committee of The Alzheimer’s Association and IADAF, chaired three New York City Ballet galas, and just recently chaired the 2010 Rita Hayworth Gala. Her husband, Lawrence, is the creator and former CEO of Pantone, Inc., the international leader in color matching systems, and her son, Loren, currently attends New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. Mr. Herbert is active on the boards of the American Film Institute and New York City Ballet.

Jenny’s Flowers Inc. • Jenny’s Flowers Inc. opened its doors on Valentine’s Day in 1973.

Darla & John Karlton • “Thank you, Miami City Ballet, for 26 years of beautiful and breathtaking ballet. We are looking forward to the future!” Darla and John Karlton happily reside in Bal Harbour, Florida, during the winter and spend their summers in Litchfield County, Connecticut. Mrs. Karlton studies ballet and, at one time, worked in New York for the Richard Rodgers Organization. Mr. Karlton, who completed his graduate studies at New York University, is the chairman of a national real estate investment company. Mrs. Karlton is on the board of Miami City Ballet. R. Kirk Landon & Pamela Garrison • R. Kirk Landon, former chairman and CEO of American Bankers Insurance Group, has been a generous donor to the South Florida community for many years. In his new occupation as philanthropist, he is the president of The Kirk Foundation and The Kirk A. and Dorothy P. Landon Foundation. The Louis B. Mayer Foundation • Louis B. Mayer Foundation was founded in 1947 by Louis B. Mayer, the head of production at MGM from its inception in 1924 until 1950. It has supported a variety of educational, scientific and artistic activities, with a current focus on leading-edge medical research, film preservation and dance. L. Jeffrey Selznick, a grandson of Louis B. Mayer, was the president of the foundation from 1989 until his death in 1997.

Harriet & Henry Pownall • Harriet and Henry Pownall are long-time residents of Broward County where Henry was the owner and CEO of Imagination Farms, a large dairy farm (formerly Velda Farms). Many South Floridians have fond recollections of their class tours of the dairy operation. After retirement, Harriet and Henry began to study ballroom dance and ballet; they were especially enamored of Edward Villella's The Neighborhood Ballroom. Lynn Wolfson • Lynn Wolfson, a native Miamian and philanthropist, has actively devoted herself to the advancement of the arts, culture and education in her community. She is a past member of the Board of Trustees for Miami City Ballet, a board member of the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts Foundation of Miami, a former director of Wometco Enterprises, and a founding member of Young Patronesses of the Opera. The Honorable Louis Wolfson II, her late husband, was a former Florida state representative and senior vice president of Wometco Enterprises. In addition to being a member of the Opera Circle, she served on the Board of Directors and was the honorary chair of the opera’s Magnum Opus Campaign to build the Anderson Opera Center. Ms. Wolfson was the honorary chairman for the gala opening of Adrienne Arsht Center. The opera took place on the Lynn Wolfson Stage at the center’s Ziff Ballet Opera House.

NUTCRACKER ACT I Scene i It is Christmas Eve. A blanket of snow covers the city of Nuremberg, and a bright Christmas star glows in the sky.

As George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker™ opens, Dr. and Frau Stahlbaum add last minute decorations to the magnificent tree in their living room. Their children, Marie and Fritz, are in the drawing room, playing and waiting for family and friends to arrive. When they do, the parents are the first to gather in the living room. They call the children in and watch their excited reactions to the tree and the fancy wrapped gifts surrounding it. The tree is a marvel, with branches full of sugar plum candies, wooden toys, sparkling candles, and marzipan animals.

The children have to wait for Fritz and Marie’s grandparents to arrive before gifts will be distributed, so they go back to play. Dr. Stahlbaum starts them off, leading the boys in a military march around the room. That turns into a dance for the children and Frau Stahlbaum, with the fathers joining in.

When the Stahlbaum grandparents arrive, the adults toast the elders and then — finally — give the children their gifts. The presents are traditional, and very much appreciated: beautiful dolls for the girls, and toy bugles and drums for the boys.

In the midst of the excitement, the grandfather clock begins to chime and startles the children. A mysterious-looking man enters the room, cloaked in an enormous black cape and top hat, and wearing a black patch over one eye.

Oh, it’s only Herr Drosselmeier! He’s an inventor, a magician, and Marie’s godfather. Tonight he has brought more than his usual array of strange gadgets — with him is his handsome young nephew.

Marie seems bashful when they are introduced, but she keeps her eye on the princely boy after she runs back to her mother.

Noticing her shyness, Herr Drosselmeier pulls a fascinating little watch from his pocket. (Besides inventing gadgets and toys, Drosselmeier also fixes clocks.) He leads Marie to the Stahlbaum’s grandfather clock, which he synchronizes to the watch. Marie grabs the watch out of his hands and runs to show it to her friends, who then pester the inventor.

The children eventually quiet down after Drosselmeier performs a magic trick for them, which is just the beginning of his “show.” To the party he has brought three large gift boxes,tied with satin bows. From the first two, he and his nephew remove life-sized dancing dolls, Harlequin and Columbine. The third box yields a toy soldier, who thrills everyone with his military maneuvers.

Once the dolls are returned to their boxes, Drosselmeier brings out more gifts for Marie.

The first is a hobby-horse, which becomes the center of a struggle between Marie and her brother, won by Fritz. Drosselmeier organizes a tug-of-war to try to smooth things over (silly Drosselmeier!), and then unveils his final gift for Marie.

The gift is a charming wooden doll with big expressive eyes, a fuzzy white beard, and a special talent for cracking nuts. Drosselmeier demonstrates its abilities before giving the Nutcracker to Marie. As she admires the Nutcracker’s dashing uniform, the very jealous Fritz pulls the wooden figure away. He runs across the room, throws the Nutcracker to the floor, and stomps on it!

Drosselmeier scolds Fritz and then tries to comfort Marie. He carefully wraps the Nutcracker’s now-broken jaw with his handkerchief, and returns the doll to the heartbroken little girl. Her friends cluster around her, and Drosselmeier’s nephew presents Marie with a special bed for the injured Nutcracker.

The boys return one last time to disrupt the girls, but their play ends when Dr. Stahlbaum invites everyone to dance a final dance of the evening, in tribute to Fritz and Marie’s grandparents.

When the dance ends, the guests bid farewell and the children reluctantly leave. Marie and the nephew are the last to say goodbye: they reach toward each other, but Herr Drosselmeier and Frau Stahlbaum separate the pair. Her mother sends Marie upstairs and turns out the lights. As midnight draws near, only the sweet sounds of a violin are heard, floating through the darkened house.

ACT I Scene ii The excitement of the evening has been too much for Marie, who is unable to fall asleep. She sneaks down-stairs to visit her beloved Nutcracker and finally falls asleep on the couch with the doll clutched to her heart. Within moments, a dark shadow — Drosselmeier — crosses the room. He looks for the Nutcracker in the special bed, but it’s not there. He notices Marie on the couch and moves to her side. Drosselmeier loosens the Nutcracker from her grasp,waves his hands as if performing more magic to repair the doll, then carefully replaces the Nutcracker beside her.

All of the sudden, the lights flicker and wake a startled Marie. She sees Drosselmeier, perched on top of the grandfather clock! She runs to hide behind the Christmas tree but a huge, ragged-looking mouse enters the room and frightens her terribly! Marie dodges the mouse, but another mouse follows, jumping past Marie’s head. A third comes and a fourth!

As she backs away, the room starts to spin. The Christmas tree trembles and starts to grow. Life-sized soldiers appear, and then a rabbit, a sentry, and a bugler emerge from the shadows. Marie runs to protect her Nutcracker and manages to place him safely in his bed at the foot of the tree. She looks up to the tree for reassurance but it, too, continues to change, growing bigger and bigger. Glancing back, she sees that the Nutcracker’s toy bed has been replaced by one that is human-sized, and the Nutcracker in it is larger than she!

The toy sentry sends a warning shot at the return of a mouse, to no avail: an entire army of mice soon appears! With a toot on his horn, the bugler calls the toy soldiers to war. Led by the sentry and the rabbit drummer, the soldiers look to Marie for a command. She points them toward the mice, then wakes the Nutcracker so he can assume command of his troops.

The Nutcracker leads charge after charge. He orders his troops to fire the cannon but it doesn’t shoot a cannonball...it shoots cheese, and the mice grab the food and return to CENTERSTAGEMAGAZINES.COM

King draws his sword but misses the rabbit, striking his own tail instead.

Thankful for the rabbit’s diversion and back on his feet, the Nutcracker returns to battle the Mouse King but is again driven down. In desperation, Marie throws her slipper at the evil rodent. He turns and chases her to the Nutcracker’s bed where she then faints, frightened by the pursuit. Her brave act has saved the Nutcracker, who pushes his sword through the Mouse King’s heart. As the wicked brute lies dead on the floor, the Nutcracker cuts off the king’s crown and walks to the bed where Marie now sleeps.

fight. The Nutcracker organizes one last charge into the heart of the army but the mice surround the soldiers and carry them all away — all but the Nutcracker and the rabbit.

Without warning, the King of the Mice appears, jumping toward Marie. He’s an ugly fellow with a crown on his head.

Drawing his saber,the Nutcracker protects Marie but the Mouse King returns the attack, swinging a gigantic sword of his own. The Nutcracker jumps on the creature’s back but is thrown off and trapped on the ground by the Mouse King’s sword. From behind, the rabbit pulls the Mouse King’s tail, causing the royal mouse to about-face. The Mouse

ACT I Scene iii The Nutcracker beckons Marie’s bed to follow him on a journey. Moving on its own, the bed transports the sleeping Marie into another world, where the Nutcracker is magically transformed into a prince. He wakes Marie and presents her with the crown he captured in battle.

Together, they behold a breathtaking scene, a winter forest come to life in a sparkling dance of snowflakes. They pass through the flurry and begin their journey to the Land of the Sugar Plum Fairy. As they walk, Marie notices that the Prince bears a striking resemblance to Drosselmeier’s nephew.

ACT II Golden¬winged angels prepare the enchanted Marzipan Castle for the arrival of the Sugar Plum Fairy, who reigns over the Land of the Sweets. She soon enters and, bearing her magic wand, sweetly dances with the little angels before summoning the other members of her kingdom to join her.

Marie and the Prince come upon the gathering,and are warmly greeted.The Sugar Plum Fairy welcomes them to the Land of the Sweets and invites the Prince to tell his tale. He describes the battle: how the toy soldiers fought the mice, and how he accepted the Mouse King’s challenge to fight for Marie’s safety. Finally, he tells of how Marie saved his life.

The Sugar Plum Fairy is impressed by their courage. She praises the Prince and his Princess, and then leads them to a special throne, specially set to give them the best view of the celebration, which is about to begin.

It’s a celebration of things delicious!

Sumptuous Spanish Hot Chocolate heat up in a spicy fandango...Arabian Coffee moves languidly through a Middle Eastern dance...three Chinese Teas leap acrobatically around a lacquer box.

Candy Canes exuberantly prance before their royal guests,led by an athletic Peppermint Stick who jumps through a whirling hoop. Marzipan Shepherdesses remind Marie of the decorations on her Christmas tree and, with great fanfare, Mother Commedia reveals miniature Italian polichinelles who dart out and dance in pairs.

Next, a beautiful group of dancing flowers, a whirl of brilliant orange, magenta, and green, make their entrance. Marie and the Prince taste sugar petals while the honey Dewdrop spins through the blooms in the Waltz of the Flowers.

Now comes the time when the Sugar Plum Fairy, in a golden tutu, is escorted by her Cavalier to perform for her guests. They begin their classical pas de deux.

with soft adagio movements, and build to an exciting crescendo. Holding hands, Marie and the Prince are overwhelmed, hoping someday to dance as magically as that.

Everyone joins in for a lively finale, a blaze of color and celebration.

As the time to leave draws near, the Sugar Plum Fairy leads her guests to a magic sleigh. The Prince and Princess wave goodbye and are flown to where the moon meets the sun. Daybreak awaits and Marie will soon wake. It is Christmas day.

EDWARD VILLELLA

Founding Artistic Director Long before there was a Miami City Ballet, Eddie Villella - he hadn’t yet graduated to “Edward” - had been recognized as the greatest male ballet dancer ever produced in America. And his primacy hasn’t been challenged in the thirty-four years since his dancing career came to a premature end. Villella showed that a tough brash kid out of Maritime College could turn into a major artist, and in doing so, changed the way men danced in America as well as the way male dancers were perceived. Since 1986, he has focused his talent, his intelligence and his energy on creating and maintaining a world-famous ballet company in South Florida. In recognition of his achievements, President Clinton presented Mr. Villella with the 1997 National Medal of Arts. Also in 1997, he was named a Kennedy Center Honoree and was inducted into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame. Recently, Villella was elected as a Fellow into the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. Edward Villella was born in Bayside, New York in 1936. He entered the School of American Ballet at age ten but interrupted his dance training to complete academic studies. A graduate of the New York Maritime Academy, he obtained a B.S. in marine transportation, lettered in baseball and was a championship boxer. He returned to SAB following graduation in 1955 and, in 1957 was invited to join the New York City Ballet, where he was quickly promoted to Soloist (1958) and then to Principal Dancer (1960). Mr. Villella was the original male lead in many important ballets in New York City Ballet repertoire among them Tarantella, the “Rubies” section of Jewels, Symphony in Three Movements, Dances at a Gathering, Watermill and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Oberon). Perhaps his most famous role was in the 1960 revival of Balanchines’s 1929 masterpiece, Prodigal Son. Mr. Villella was the first American male dancer to perform with the Royal Danish Ballet and the only American ever to be asked to dance an encore at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow. He danced for President Kennedy’s inauguration and for Presidents Johnson, Nixon and Ford. He was producer/director for the PBS series “Dance in America” for over a year and in 1975 won an Emmy Award for his CBS television production of “Harlequinade”. He currently serves on the Board of Trustees of the School of American Ballet. The University of Pittsburgh Press reissued Villella’s 1992 autobiography, Prodigal Son: Dancing for Balanchine in a World of Pain and Magic, written with Larry Kaplan, in March 1998. He is married to Linda Villella, the Director of Miami City Ballet School.

PAMELA GARDINER

Executive Vice President, Artistic Affairs has been an arts management executive for the past twenty-six years, her working partnership with Artistic Director Edward Villella began in 1984 at the Madison Festival of the Lakes, where Villella served as Artistic Director and she served as Executive Director. Prior to that, she served as Assistant Dean of Student Academic Affairs in the College of Letters and Science at University of Wisconsin-Madison and as an Assistant Trust Officer at the Cleveland Trust Company. Gardiner holds a B.A. degree in English Literature from University of Wisconsin-Madison; an M.A. degree in English and Comparative Literature from Columbia University and a J.D. degree from Case Western Reserve University. Since 1993, she has served on the Board of Directors of the Performing Arts Foundation of Greater Miami. She is a member of the Florida, Wisconsin and Ohio Bars and of the Entertainment, Arts and Sports Law Section of the Florida Bar Association.

NICHOLAS T. GOLDSBOROUGH

Executive Director recently joined Miami City Ballet and brings his extensive background in performing arts management, administration and fund-raising to the Company. He is the former President of The Nicholas Goldsborough Group, LLC, a national strategic management consulting and fund-raising counsel. Prior to that, he served as Managing Director of the Shakespeare Theatre Company (STC) in Washington, DC where he oversaw the construction and funding of the $89 million Harman Center for the Arts. He was the Executive Vice President of the Music Center of Los Angeles County, overseeing the managing and planning of the Walt Disney Concert Hall capital campaign. He established a presenting organization for dance and ballet that is now called “Gloria Kaufman Presents Dance at the Music Center.” Mr. Goldsborough was also Deputy Director of University Development at UCLA, Los Angeles. He was Vice Chairman and Chief Operating Officer of the New York City consulting firm C.W. Shaver and Co., which was instrumental in the building of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark. In addition, he oversaw the planning and gifts phase of Carnegie Hall’s $60 million restoration campaign and the $50 million campaign to rebuild New York City’s Jewish Museum. He also served as Senior Development Officer at Harvard University for seven years.

BACKSTAGE ROMA SOSENKO Principal Ballet Mistress A former soloist with New York City Ballet, Roma Sosenko works closely with Miami City Ballet dancers re-staging ballets and rehearsing them for each performance. During her career as a dancer, Sosenko performed roles in Jerome Robbins’ The Four Seasons, The Goldberg Variations and Interplay and George Balanchine’s Ballo della Regina, Symphony in C, Chaconne, Coppélia, Jewels and Scotch Symphony, among others.

She has been seen on PBS in several productions: Balanchine’s “L’Enfant et les Sortiléges”, “A Lincoln Center Special: A Tribute to George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins”, “Live From Studio 8H” and also performed the role of Columbine in the film of George Balanchine’s The NutcrackerTM. JOAN LATHAM

Ballet Mistress joined Miami City Ballet in 1992 as a dancer and now serves as ballet mistress, responsible for re-staging and rehearsing the dancers in much of the repertoire. She began her dance training with Damara Bennett at City Ballet School in her native city of San Francisco. She also studied at the Pacific Northwest Ballet School where she performed and toured with their company. As a soloist with Miami City Ballet she performed principal roles in such ballets as Balanchine’s Apollo, Symphony in C, Agon and others. She was also featured in works by Paul Taylor, Twyla Tharp, and Edward Villella as well as classics such as Swan Lake, Giselle and Coppélia.

CRISTA VILLELLA Ballet Mistress practically grew up at Miami City Ballet. She trained at Miami City Ballet School, and was Marie in the Company’s first production of George Balanchine’s The NutcrackerTM. Villella returned to MCB in 2006 after graduating with a BFA in theater from NYU and now works closely with the dancers rehearsing and preparing them for performances. She has served as the Ballet Mistress on many ballets including “The Golden Section,” In The Upper Room, Nine Sinatra Songs, The Neighborhood Ballroom and Liturgy and she’s the Children’s Ballet Mistress for George Balanchine’s The NutcrackerTM. During the 2007-2008 season, Villella worked closely with Twyla Tharp as the Ballet Mistress on the World Premiere of NIGHTSPOT. GARY SHELDON Principal Conductor returns to Miami City Ballet in his second season, following outstanding acclaim in his first – “impressive debut” (South Florida Classical Review); “fine performance” (Miami Herald).

Maestro Sheldon is the winner of the 2010 American Prize in Orchestral Conducting, awarded for recorded performances conducting William Bolcom's music with clarinetist Richard Stoltzman and the Lancaster Festival Orchestra on the Marquis Classics label. He is former principal guest conductor for the San Francisco Ballet and conductor for Ballet Met in Columbus, Ohio. He is also former Music Director of the Marin Symphony in California, where he received the Distinguished Citizen Award from the Marin Cultural Center and Museum. Sheldon has guest conducted major orchestras including the BBC Symphony – London, Montreal Symphony, St. Louis Symphony and St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. He is currently Artistic Director of the Lancaster Festival in Ohio and Principal Conductor at the Festival at Sandpoint in Idaho. He is a native of Bay Shore, New York and a graduate of the Juilliard School.

BACKSTAGE HAYDÉE MORALES

Costume Designer and Director Born in Puerto Rico and raised in New York City. Her career has enveloped both design and production for dance, Broadway, opera and film. Morales acquired her theatrical training at Barbara Matera Costume Shop in New York. She joined Miami City Ballet in 1986. Since then, Morales has designed and over-seen countless productions including George Balanchine’s The NutcrackerTM in collaboration with Jose Varona and Edward Villella’s full-length ballet The Neighborhood Ballroom and Gismonti Brasil. Also, Lynne-Taylor Corbett’s Kennedy Center commission The Mystery of the Dancing Princesses. Ms. Morales has also recreated costumes from the original designs of many Balanchine ballets as well as for dances by Paul Taylor, Twyla Tharp, Jerome Robbins, Christopher Wheeldon and Trey McIntyre. Morales recently designed the costumes for the off-Broadway Show Celia: The Life and Music of Celia Cruz.

FRANCISCO RENNÓ

Music Advisor to the Artistic Director is the winner of various piano competitions and has appeared as soloist with orchestras in North and South America. He has given solo and chamber-music recitals throughout the two continents, including appearances at Carnegie Recital Hall and The Phillips Collection. For ballet performances, he has performed as soloist with the symphony orchestras of Kansas City, St. Louis, Berkeley, Naples, Torino and The Kennedy Center. Rennó was company pianist for the Kansas City Ballet from its inception in 1981 until he joined Miami City Ballet in 1999. He composed the music to Edward Villella’s “THE WALTZ: Our Lady of Oblivion.”

JOHN HALL Production and Lighting Director joined Miami City Ballet in 1995 and is responsible for coordinating all lighting and scenic design elements for the Company. Some of his lighting design highlights since joining MCB include Jewels, Slaughter on Tenth Avenue, Giselle, Coppélia, Edward Villella’s The Neighborhood Ballroom and Twyla Tharp-Elvis Costello’s NIGHTSPOT. Mr. Hall and his wife Shannon have two sons, John and William.
