early two years ago we made an announcement that the Holocaust & Humanity Center would move to Cincinnati’s Union Terminal. This location couldn’t be more fitting since many Holocaust survivors took their first steps at rebuilding their lives when they arrived by train to our community. That generation of survivors and their children created, nurtured and sustained this organization. By flourishing in Cincinnati, survivors defied the Nazis. By telling their stories and keeping Holocaust education and dialogue alive for the next generations, we continue to be defiant with a much larger platform and reach even more throughout the community. This has been an exciting year as we prepare for this historic move. Yet even during this busy time, HHC continues to be committed to our mission and ongoing programs. Within this report you will see the impact of our work touching thousands. Here are some accomplishments I’d like to highlight: • With the incredible leadership of the capital campaign committee chaired by Arna and Bobby Fisher, along with Alison and Bret Caller, Mary Ellen and Tom Cody, Sandy Kaltman and John Isidor and Kim and George Vincent, and the partnership of the Jewish Federation of Cincinnati, HHC has raised more than $11.4 Million in commitments to the capital campaign and additional planned gifts. • A significant part of the campaign was the visionary gift from Nancy & David Wolf. We were honored to announce that HHC will now bear their name. • The Violins of Hope programming and concert at Music Hall reached more than 6,000 community members and students. Nine years ago, HHC was excited to have the opportunity to expand our museum and to find a new family at Rockwern Academy. For the last nine years, HHC has been fortunate to share a space with the students, teachers and families of Rockwern Academy who have been part of tours, run with us in the Great Human Race and have been a wonderful part of our everyday lives. We thank Rockwern for their partnership and hospitality. Now, as we prepare again for expansion, we are excited for the new opportunities that await us at Union Terminal. As we recognize a new chapter in the evolution of the organization, we hope it serves as a symbol of hope for all. We look forward to welcoming you to our new home! Warmly,

rowing up at Rockwern, one reason I always waited for sixth grade was because I knew we would start learning about the Holocaust and going to the Holocaust and Humanity Center. Even though learning about the Holocaust can be scary and depressing, we always talked about how studying it can make us better people today. Some of my family died in the Holocaust, and I was always proud of going to a school that had programs where we went there, and heard survivors, and learned about their lives. We did interesting and challenging things in the attic, and had to think about complicated topics. ” Jacob, Rockwern student

RESOURCES & PROGRAMS

Educator Professional Development By offering meaningful professional development opportunities to educators through courses and workshops, HHC reaches hundreds of educators. This includes the Roma & Sam Kaltman Holocaust Studies for Educators summer institute presented annually in partnership with Xavier University. The institute is designed to provide teachers with the knowledge and resources to effectively teach the Holocaust in the classroom.

The Coppel Speakers’ Bureau HHC offers schools, civic groups, and other organizations the opportunity to hear accounts of the Holocaust from speakers who share their personal experiences. Every year, our speakers reach hundreds of different audiences, providing groups and individuals with moving and memorable experiences of listening to them recount their stories of suffering, loss, and resilience.

Holocaust Awareness Programs “Remembering, informing and transforming” through community programs including lectures, films, performances and exhibits in collaboration with more than 30 area organizations, universities, synagogues and churches. This includes the annual community-wide Yom HaShoah commemoration.

ttending Rockwern while the Holocaust museum was located downstairs made studying the Holocaust in 6th grade much more meaningful. It was so convenient to be able to visit there as many times as we wanted during the year. We got to experience so many first hand accounts and see objects up close that we might not have been able to see in a large field trip type of group. Having the HHC in Rockwern Academy really influenced my learning and understanding of the Holocaust.” Alex, Rockwern student

Echoing Voices Educational exhibits accompanied by trained educators that travel to area schools. This unique exhibit features artifact facsimiles and testimonies from eyewitnesses and survivors of the Holocaust.

Traveling Exhibits HHC offers several original exhibits related to the Holocaust that can be borrowed by families, schools, community centers, libraries and other public places. The exhibits are portable and affordable. They encourage multidisciplinary approaches to Holocaust education.

Program featuring Jeanne Opdyke Smith, daughter of rescuer Irene Opdyke

Resource Center and Archives The Coppel Library includes books, journals, DVDs, curriculum resources and more. Trained staff are available to help with research and curriculum development. HHC maintains Archives encompassing authentic documents, photographs and artifacts from survivors and eyewitnesses who settled in Cincinnati after WWII.

The Benjamin Lerhaupt International Shared Reading Project The International Shared Reading Project (ISRP) is a school-based educational program linking American and Israeli students in the reading, study, and online discussion of Holocaust literature and history. This project aims to help American and Israeli students comprehend the complexity of the Holocaust while encouraging discussion and reflection with a person of their own age, but from a different culture.

STATE-OF-THE-ART

MUSEUM

O

verlooking the train tracks that brought many survivors to their new home, the new 7,500 square foot museum will share the history of the Holocaust, while exploring the potential each of us has to be an upstander. The museum is being designed by our staff along with a renowned team of experts, educators, artists and designers. Through eyewitness accounts, interactive experiences, artifacts and art, visitors will bear witness to the strength and courage of the human spirit set against the backdrop of one of the darkest chapters in human history. The museum will share the rise of Nazism and the dismantling of democracy, the attacks against Jews and their loss of essential freedoms and protections. It will show the manifestations of the worst of humanity, but also highlight resistance and rescue; of messengers who warned the world while there was still time to act, and upstanders who risked their lives to assist the beleaguered. It will tell the story of survivors who rebuilt their lives in Cincinnati,

HHC Annual Report 10/17/18.indd 8

who have taught us in word and deed that darkness and evil, no matter how powerful, cannot triumph over basic human decency. The new museum also features the Humanity Gallery, an experience where visitors will be introduced to local and global topics that affect us all. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore moments in which individuals were activated to bring about change to our community and world. We envision an experience that has a lasting impact and inspires visitors to make a difference by activating their core strengths to be an upstander.

“A

s a Holocaust Survivor and a teacher here at Rockwern Academy, it has been particularly meaningful for me to have the Holocaust and Humanity Center here on our campus. Watching all the student groups come here to go through the Mapping Our Tears exhibit, reassured me that future generations were learning the history of the Holocaust. It is only through education that we can be sure that Holocaust deniers do not have their way. I will miss having the visual confirmation of HHC’s educational mission, but am excited to know that the new museum will be in Cincinnati’s cultural center and will be accessible to so many more people.” Zahava, Rockwern teacher
