As Dr. Barbara-Jayne Lewthwaite noted in her “Welcoming the Future” message, there is much we can learn from our predecessors. The President’s upcoming inauguration on April 9, 2010, is an optimum time to honor the past by highlighting the history and achievements of the 11 other individuals who led Centenary College. Dr. George H. Whitney, 1869–1895 When the Newark Conference of the United Methodist Church founded the College in 1867, they selected Dr. George H. Whitney as the Centenary Collegiate Institute’s first President. Dr. Whitney oversaw the early development of the main campus in Hackettstown. Upon his retirement in 1895, Dr. Whitney held the title of President Emeritus until his death in 1913.

Dr. Wilbert P. Ferguson, 1895–1900 Centenary’s second President also faced one of the institution’s greatest challenges: the fire that destroyed the main building on October 31, 1899. The cause of the fire was unknown; 65 students escaped unharmed. Dr. Charles Wesley McCormick, 1900–1902 Elected President in the wake of the 1899 fire, Centenary’s third President encountered his fair share of challenges: a smallpox epidemic that quarantined the Town of Hackettstown in 1901. Dr. McCormick is also the first faculty member to become President of Centenary College. Continued on page 9 7
