(Cen Cal Serenade Shoot p.20) I currently use a Sony a55 with a Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 and a Minolta 85mm f/1.4 for digital photography. For film I use a Minolta Maxxxum 7000i with a 35mm and I also use a Lomography Diana F+ for 120mm film. I don’t really use any fancy lenses or equipment. I’ve always stuck with what I learned with and only upgrade my gear when something stops working.
TRACKS
I got into photography when I was about 6 years old through my uncle who was a photography teacher years ago. I would just get disposable film cameras and snap away at nothing. Then when I was about 8, my dad gave me his Minolta to use and I just fell in love with the sound and the feel of the shutter going off and the mirror just flapping up. I consider myself a self taught photographer even though I was a photo major at BYU-Idaho. I didn’t really learn anything new. Going to school for photography just brought up more opportunities to think of new techniques to capture images in a different way. I just love photography. I will photograph anything. I usually shoot a lot of bands at shows but I also love shooting landscapes and doing portraiture.
r e t u a r Visalia Ryan K CCM Style Shoot p.56 I use a Canon mostly, but I enjoy using all different types of cameras. I got into photography way back in the eighth grade. My first camera was a Pentax K1000. I later got a job taking photos for the Fresno Bee. I studied photography in college and earned a degree from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Ca. I love to photograph people and things that can take me back to when I was a kid.

t’s hard to describe the work of Chilean illustrator and motionographer Tomas Ives. His chaotic, high energy art full of monsters and rain clouds is hypnotising. Ives creates his own little worlds with bold shapes and bright colors that radiate from the page. I have been following Ives for years and with each new piece I become a bigger fan. A fan of California’s neo pop and low brow art, Ives admires work by Rebel 8, Jim Flora and Gary Baseman. He draws influence from the Native American Aboriginal art as well as American pop art. It wasn’t until Ives began studying journalism that he realized his true passion was art. He began drawing political cartoons for a local newspaper and his work grew from there. Once he found his own unique style, everything made sense and people began to really take notice! Ives is currently the Art Director for a local

en Cal Mag has stepped up to a higher power! This month’s Serenade reveals a faith driven five-piece band from San Jose, CA. We checked out I Am Empire at the Burning Bush in Stockton, California and they rocked the house! Photographer Ryan Mannie captured it all, along with a few candid shots of the guys before the show.
I Am Empire have been rocking together since 2008, blending alternative rock with a heavy rhythm sound. They released their first album, the self-titled I Am Empire, in 2009. Their latest album, Kings, delivers a punch right out of the gate with “Saints and Sinners.”
Singer - songwriter, Austin Lyons writes emotional lyrics from dark moments in his past. Lyons was abandoned twice as a child, once by his real father and again by his stepfather. I Am Empire’s album Kings is a reflection of that. Lyons writes

iuseppe’s Cucina Italiana in Pismo Beach
was the location for this issue’s Date Night. Known for great wine and Italian food, Giuseppe’s was founded in 1988 by Giuseppe DiFronzo. A student at Cal Poly, DiFronzo came up with the idea as a senior class project. 25 years later, Giuseppe’s is a huge success and has since opened up a second location,
Palazzo Giuseppe, in San Luis Obispo. Arriving at Giuseppe’s feels like being transported to old world Italy. The Vespas out front, the woodburning oven and the homemade wine all add to its elegant ambiance. Our friendly waiter greeted us with warm bread baked daily from scratch. Right at our table he mixed parmesan cheese with garlic and olive oil making a delightful spread! Our first course was a light Caprese salad made with vine-ripened heirloom tomatoes, fresh mozzarella and basil, all drizzled with a basil olive oil dressing. We paired it with Giuseppe’s own 2011 Di Fronzo
Pinot Grigo, a light and fruity wine perfect with salad or seafood.

The seared Ahi appetizer - Tonno a Modo Mio was next. The tuna was seared to perfection and was seasoned with pepper and lemon on a bed of arugula with red onion, tomatoes and cucumbers. Divine! After our salads came the entrees. I ordered the Pollo con Crema e Basilico - A large parmigiana crusted chicken breast covered in a basil cream sauce, served alongside handmade tortelloni. This was the moistest chicken I can remember and the cream sauce was to die for! He had the
Linguine ai Frutti Di Mare - A seafood lover’s dream! This dish was a medley of shrimp, scallops, mussels, clams, fish and garlic all tossed with linguini in a fresh homemade tomato sauce. We paired our entrees with two more Di Fronzo wines. The 2006 Di Fronzo Syrah was pleasantly smooth with deep plum flavors and the 2009 Di Fronzo Pinot Noir had hints of berry and a nice smoky finish. After dinner we were almost too full for dessert, but when the waiter brought out the delightful trio of homemade gelato we couldn’t resist! In vanilla, strawberry, and mint chip, it was a perfect finish to our delightful Italian experience!

n a side road of Madera’s Ave. 12 lies the quaint Chateau Lasgoity. Surrounded by lush vineyards you follow the dirt road and come to a small house near a large warehouse that serves as the tasting room. Winemaker John Lasgoity has been making wine for 24 years, and he, his wife Alyson and their four children are beginning to make a name for themselves in the California wine world. Watching John beam with ideas and ambition, you can see his passion for winemaking runs deep! He was obviously excited when he showed us his latest blueprints to update the winery by building a new drainage system. Not only had he made the blueprints himself, he was going to do all the work! You can really tell talking to John and Alyson that they are living their dream and doing what they love! They are such a laidback couple! They

recently changed their label to an image of a small home, which is the actual “Chateau Lasgoity,” poking fun at their quaint estate. The first wine we tried at the Chateau was their signature wine, a 2010 Blanc du Val or “White of the Valley” (French Columbard, Malvasia Bianca, and Chardonnay). This soft white has lovely aromas of apricots and grapefruit. This is the bottle we took home and it was the perfect pair to a hot summer night in California. We then tried the 2010 Chardonnay, a very drinkable chard with a light oak flavor. Refreshing and light, this Chardonnay would go great with just about anything! The 2010 Pinot Grigio was surprisingly light,

very crisp and refreshing. The 2010 Merlot is fruit forward with a medium oak tannin finish. The 2010 Syrah was one of the tasting team’s favorites with a smooth and buttery finish; this wine was scrumptious! Another of our favorite Lasgoity reds was their 2010 Lodi Cabernet Sauvignon, a big and bold Cab we were told is mixed with a little Merlot to soften the flavor. We enjoyed our time at the little Chateau in the vineyards of Madera, and hope to get back soon and find out what John has planned for the future! CCM
