FROM US

If you look it up, to “celebrate” is to mark a significant or happy day. Its other meaning is to do something enjoyable to mark such an occasion. This all boils down to one simple question - do we really need a convincing reason to celebrate love’s splendour? The answer is this we celebrate weddings and their intimacies because it’s a jubilant entitlement that everyone embraces. We put these nuptials on a pedestal because well, love comes first. Celebrate offers essential guides, tips from experts and gorgeous themes and real weddings to ignite the creativity in you. From wedding trends and fashion to etiquette and events, Celebrate is a bundle of all things inspiring for anyone and every joyful union. Wedding celebrations are filled with happiness, devotion and admiration. Fittingly, the theme of this issue of Celebrate is “All about Love” and we’ve worked with many inspiring people whose work we truly adore and the ideas we share are the ones we would love to have in own celebrations. It’s for the love of weddings that we took in stride the endless hours of work, sieving through thousands of photos, shooting in the rain for our themed shoot, Tickled Pink and travelling across Singapore on a warm and sunny day with beautiful yet very fragile wedding cakes feature in Beautifully Yours. Just for you, we’ve enjoyed every step taken to make this wedding magazine come alive. So stop searching for a good enough a reason, come celebrate with us! Lots of Love, ELAINE & JOANNE

Editor’s LETTER

ELAINE ANG-GIRAUD Founder & Editor

I can’t get enough of weddings. The creativity, elegance and colourful intricate details that go into crafting such joyous occasions leave me immensely happy. Since managing my online portal, ExtraOrdinary Weddings for many years, the opportunities have allowed me to indulge in all kinds of books and trinkets related to weddings! Weddings are inspiring and I’m always in search of such artistry in my everyday life. I collect pretty ribbons (which I’ve got boxes and boxes of), marvellous fabrics (for my next DIY project) and I am a hoarder (my husband simply sighs in despair each time we move to a new apartment). And now, I’ve got Celebrate - a wedding magazine that will see its first online issue reach many equally excited readers worldwide (well, almost)! Celebrate has really been the most challenging project after starting ExtraOrdinary Weddings but thankfully, I thrive on challenges. I am blessed, with much support from believers, encouraging wedding partners, Joanne, my creative energiser bunny and partner, and a supportive husband and family. So that’s me. My heart beats a little faster whenever the word “wedding” is whispered. Does yours? Time to celebrate!

Celebrate TEAM JOANNE HONG Partner & Creative Director It started with an idea and looking back at where it all began, I'm still amazed that this idea actually became a reality. This issue marks the beginning of many wedding inspirations and ideas. We have gathered inspiration from the latest colour trends, our love of things vintage, my crazy obsession with prints and patterns and simply because we adore pink. I am especially inspired by the endless energy of the founder and chief editor, Elaine, a level headed, brilliant “multi-tasker” who never take 'no' for an answer and most importantly whose vision for wedding I had the pleasure of shaping. I am also honoured to have the privilege to work alongside with a few of the best talents in the trade – their enthusiasm and support helped make our vision come true. This online magazine is an interpretation of what is beautiful and timeless and we hope to share again much more in the future issues of Celebrate.

Tasting MACARONS

PH O TOG RA P H Y BRYAN JEAN PH O TOG RA P H Y

The macarons from Antoinette, Canelé, Paul, SweetSpot and TWG share the spotlight on pretty plates but only one name will outshine the rest as the wedding pastry to have. Wondrous cakes aside, macarons are the next best things to have at a wedding. Yes, they give cupcakes some mean competition! These bite sized wedding treats reveal the whimsicalities of modern fairy tale weddings; your trend du jour. A team of 7 pastry lovers from the wedding circle filled one afternoon with tasty macarons until it was decided that there were more than enough to sustain us for the first quarter of the year! Despite the surfeit of macarons, we celebrate their sweet fancies with a taste test to help you decide which to have at your wedding party.

The team (from left to right): Bryan & Jean from Bryan Jean Photography, Téa Looi from The Ivory Loft, Joanne Hong from Celebrate, Adine Chin, Celebrate’s wordsmith, Nick Oxborrow from Fabulation and Elaine Ang-Giraud from Celebrate.

C E L E B R A T E | 33

Humble Beginnings The magic of macarons date back to 18th century France where they were simply sold as cookies made with ground almonds, egg whites and sugar by two Carmelite nuns. It wasn’t until the early 1900s when the grandson of Louis-Ernest Ladurée, owner of Parisian pastry shop Ladurée's, Pierre Desfontaines, took the idea of sticking two lightly crusted macaron shells together with a moist layer of creamy ganache as filling. Since then, macarons have been the choice of pastry for parties and indulgence.

34 | C E L E B R A T E

C E L E B R A T E | 35

THE 411 OF A GOOD MACARON Appearance: The perfect cookie to filling ratio is 2:1. There shouldn’t be a macaron too small that it disappears along with its taste in one bite, nor one too big that it doesn’t serve the purpose of a light dessert. Crust: Free of air bubbles and thin enough to merit a mess-free snack. Aside from a few wayward crumbs, a good crust should be soft enough for effortless bites into dainty tastes. Taste: Fresh, chewy and sweet, like how the best kinds of macarons should be. Filing: Smooth, firm and light. This layer of cream should neither be too thick nor too thin for that matter. The filing should not escape the macaron shells. Sweetness level: A macaron’s sweetness should not be overwhelming but instead, entice the taste buds with a gentle fancy. Other considerations: Ability to withstand the humidity of the outdoors.

Adine - Praline (Paul) “Consistent in taste and appearance.” Elaine - Framboise (Paul) “Great taste, organic and perfectly imperfect.” Jean - Bain de Rose Tea (TWG) “The sweetness is just nice with all flavours.” Joanne - Vanilla (Paul) “Vanilla is rich!” Téa - Framboise (Paul) “The best brand.”

36 | C E L E B R A T E

ANTOINETTE At first glance, Antoinette’s macarons sat pretty with strong colours and a packaging to match, the combination was picture perfect. However, a bite into the crust revealed air bubbles and taste wise, certain flavours were a tad over the top while others were too subtle. Antoinette does however, deserve credit for introducing interesting flavours like black sesame and orange - something different into the game. Size 5cm, Price at $2.80 each.

CANELÉ Have your napkins with you as you bite into a Canelé macaron. Those napkins will help you keep the crumbly shells at bay and also wipe off any excess filing from your lips. Though rich taste erupts in your mouth, a generous amount of ganache with a brittle crust aren’t what macarons ought to be. The macarons don’t hold together very well and melt when left outside for too long - aspects that aren’t very appropriate for an outdoor wedding. Size 5cm, Price at $2.50 each, $11.50 for 6 and $21.50 for 12.

SWEETSPOT Flavour is fused into the crust, creating a sweet explosion when you sink your teeth into one of its macarons. Visually, the macarons lost out for having an odd mix of colour in its shells and for its uneven crusts. However, the sweetness of SweetSpot’s Dark Chocolate Caramel is near perfection and the ganache is of adequate amount. This flavour also garners approval as the one with the most interesting taste. Size 5cm, Price at $1.80 each.

TWG TWG’s macarons received mixed reviews as the team deliberated on how well their macarons tasted, looked and how well they’d go well with cups of tea at a wedding party. TWG’s Bain de Rose Tea macarons were a hit as it teased our taste-buds with its aromatic flavour and appropriate serving of sweetness. However, the flavour of its Moroccan Mint Tea came off too strong for our liking. Nonetheless, TWG’s macarons hold well in the humidity and again, would be a good choice for outdoor celebrations! Size 4cm, Price at $2.00 each. PA U L It was unanimous; Paul’s macarons are by far the best of the lot as it boasts rich flavours and offers an impartial serving of great taste and visual appeal. The sweetness of the Pralines isn’t overwhelming and the fullness of the Framboise (French word for raspberry) leaves you wanting more. The only issue is its size, it’s a tad too big to fall into the category of petite. But what it exceeds in size it atones in well balanced taste. Size 7.5cm, Price at $6.50 each.

We reversed the roles on one red letter day as wedding vendors became admired guests at our very special Christmas lunch. Our guests were invited to put down their tools for a day as they arrived in their best at a very special luncheon. The partners of ExtraOrdinary Weddings turned up to celebrate Christmas and the announcement of the company’s new partner, Joanne Hong. The good news continued as the team also announced the launch of its much awaited online wedding magazine, Celebrate. It was an afternoon of hearty laughter and delightful conversation as wedding professionals become guests in a setting familiar to everyone in the industry. Cocktail canapÊs and delectable dishes by Villa Halia tickled our fancies throughout the day, accompanying a mood that was refreshing and the company, unforgettable.

ALL’S PLUSH Step into a world where love is quaint and picturesque. Contemporary grace comparable to a diamond's brilliance ascends the throne in romantic hues of purple, red and elegant silver. Matching the gazebo’s appeal are silver tiffany chairs that line the aisle and adorned with little similar bouquets of floral wealth.

Pick a rosy spot and celebrate joy with us! The smitten hues of subtle beauty invite you to play at this party, to dine and to be witness to a dream that’s really quite divine. Orchestrated to a theme of pink and cream coloured inspirations, vintage modernism takes the romantic out on a lunch date outdoors. The essence of vintage love is captured in the choice of crockery - elaborate tea cup sets, fair water goblets and rosy tableware. Romanticism is alive in the details of lace doilies, wistful confectionary and demure ribbons sashaying in the wind.

BEAUTY SPEAKS Charming blooms rest quietly in soft blushes by fair candles and wine glasses to hold fragrant wine. What delight they’ll be as they chaperone enlivened hearts that go aflutter with resonant conversations and select dining! These petite centrepieces are excellent in avoiding clutter and over-embellishment at the table. Sitting in the eager tranquillity of coral flush, complicated flower vases are substituted with water glasses for that clean, crisp effect. This way, attention is paid to the fetching flowers and the contrast of its green is enhanced.

CHARISMATIC DREAMS At the table, these secrets playfully reveal themselves to hopeful eyes. The intricate lace that entwines, delicious cookies, candy treats and sugar sticks with crystal-like impressions make for modest embellishments that supplement the theme with their winsome details. Bottles of coloured water are great ideas when you want to implement a colour blocking concept without having too bold a shade. With a dash of soft, crusty brown and distinct pink, experiment with the fluidity of colours in every shape and form and play with a variety of styles at your wedding party. EXPERT ADVICE

HOW

Inviting

I N VI TATI O N DESI G N & PH O TO G RAP H Y by PAPER TI G ER PRE S S

Can’t tell a place card from an escort card? Fret not - here’s a handy guide to help you decode 20 stationery jargons and understand exactly what constitutes a wedding invitation suite. While only the most formal weddings require a complete invitation suite, it’s always helpful to explore all your options before deciding which of these you’ll need. If in doubt, go with an invitation, reception and response card. This classic combination checks all the invitation etiquette boxes and won’t cost a fortune to print or send.

Emily Loke is the founder of Paper Tiger Press, Singapore's first letterpress studio, and specialises in elegant designs for luxurious wedding invitations. Emily loves weddings because they are the one occasion where reality takes a backseat to HappilyEver-Afters.

EMILY’S TAKE ON ... INVITATION: This is the first impression your wedding gets to make on a guest, so use it to set the tone for your event through design and print elements, colours and wording options. RECEPTION CARD: Traditionally it was only the ceremony everyone was invited to, so this was used to invite close friends and family to the reception afterwards. These days, it’s usually the reverse with most couples opting for a Ceremony card instead. RESPONSE CARD: Along with spaces for guests’ names, head count and meal preference, a modern bride might include an email address and a phone number here to facilitate RSVPs. DIRECTIONS CARD OR MAP: Even with GPS on every smart phone, directions can sometimes be necessary for venues that are off the beaten path. TRAVEL AND ACCOMMODATIONS CARD: If you’re having a destination wedding or inviting overseas guests, travel tips like the destination airport code and local weather information can be extremely helpful. As for hotels, most will give you good group rates if you call in advance. Be sure to list a few options to cover a variety of travel budgets. FESTIVITIES CARD: Having more events than just the ceremony and reception? Instead of sending out multiple invitations, use this one card to keep your guests posted on the time, venue and dress codes for all your wedding-related celebrations. WITHIN-THE-RIBBON CARD: Think of this as a VIP card that’s sent to guests whom you want front and centre at the ceremony. Recipients show them to the ushers, who direct them to their front-row seats (which are usually cordoned off with a ribbon, hence the name). AT-HOME CARD: For couples that don’t already live together, this card is traditionally used inform guests of your post-honeymoon mailing address. WEDDING WEBSITE CARD: Wedding websites are best used to convey information that doesn’t have a place in your main suite, like registry details or a no-kids policy. Maintain the tone of your suite with a formal printed directive to the site. OUTER ENVELOPE: Make sure your invitation suite fits comfortably in here by allowing at least a 1cm difference between your invite and envelope dimensions. Keep in mind that a fuller suite will require an even wider buffer. INNER ENVELOPE: Also known as a response envelope. Attaching the correct postage and emblazoning your address on these will make replying easier on guests. ENVELOPE LINING: Pasted in by hand, envelope lining is a fantastic way to accessorise your invitation suite through solid, textured and patterned papers. ENCLOSURE: Here it’s a folder with ribbon holders for the inserts, but an invitation enclosure is anything that keeps all your cards together in a neat package. Be it a laser-cut sleeve or a custom silk box, the options are endless.

14 0 | C E L E B R A T E

CLOSURE: This is what holds your enclosure shut. We’ve used a silk ribbon here, but you could also use paper belly band, a seal, or a monogrammed sticker to do the job. PROGRAMME: An especially helpful guide for guests during religious ceremonies, programmes can also be used to honour the bridal party, explain cultural wedding traditions or serve as a reference guide to the day’s readings and music choices. ESCORT CARDS: Also known as table cards, escort cards tell each guest which table they are seated at. They can be handed out at registration or worked into a display where welcome cocktails are served. PLACE CARDS: These are placed at each setting to designate each guest’s seat at a table. The proper format is to alternate between ladies and gentlemen, and to split up partners to ensure conversational flow. MENU: If you’ve put a lot of effort into crafting a special wedding meal, individual menus allow guests to truly appreciate what they’re tasting - particularly if you plan to have wine pairings throughout. FAVOUR TAGS: Usually, these bear little more than the couple’s names (or monogramme), wedding date and a generic line of thanks, but couples with small wedding parties might choose to personalise each one. THANK YOU CARDS: Sadly, too many couples skip this step. Thank you cards should be handwritten, tailored to thank each guest for their attendance and/or gift, and signed by both the bride and groom. If you have a photo of the guest at your wedding, enclosing it with your thank you card is always a nice touch.

Photograph h WITH KELVIN LIM PHOTOGRAPHY, THERE’S MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE AS ADINE SPENDS A DAY AT HIS STUDIO TO DISCOVER HIS WORLD OF PHOTOGRAPHY AND PAINT. Walking into the home of an artist takes your breath away. Photographer Kelvin Lim, greets me with a warm smile as I enter and meet with an air nostalgia that fills his home; a taste of old world charm quenched in new world expressions. It’s a home fused with beauty made possible with an artist's keen eye. His artistic style fills the room, blending enigmatic surrealism with a dash of romanticism as beautiful photography lines the white walls.

“The works that I’m inspired by have one thing in common: they don't belong to what is widely known as "Contemporary Art". I think 'classic' sounds best.” He indulges himself in his form of work and brings across his own unique ideas onto canvas. “I prefer to put myself into my art, instead of attempting to create a message. I simply want to express things which I find moving or beautiful.” Kelvin offers you his eyes, he can change the way you see things.

Kelvin Lim Photography is famed for their excellent wedding photography, made possible with Kelvin’s complementary and skilful knowledge of oil painting. His artistry in mixed media techniques is expressive in his sophisticated portfolio of nude photography which he paints over selectively to reveal a depth of softness. Together with partner Elaine, Kelvin embraces a world of creativity that’s indispensable to his work as a photographer, painter and artist.

HIS CURIOUS CREATIVITY

Kelvin is inspired by the French Impressionism and studies the works of many artists, and each of them moves me in different ways. His collection of books is filled with art from orient to western impressionists.

Photography alone could not fully express his imagination. So Kelvin painted on them. The experience was overwhelming as he could express anything, and beyond.

144 | C E L E B R A T E

Anything that triggers an emotional response, in particular, profound feelings of love, sadness, and solitude gets him going. With people, Kelvin is especially moved by the sensuality of women, and is forever intrigued by human expressions, body language, and the physical and emotional attraction between the opposite sexes. Kelvin is also deeply in love with nature, in particular, the forest.

The only things that got in the way were the technical problems (becoming technically proficient with the mediums), and patience (it's not easy switching between the immediacy of digital work and the much slower pace of working with traditional media). Kelvin enjoys the technique of oil on photographs the most, though he had experimented with charcoal, ink, acrylics, and oil on photographic prints, as well as "digital painting". “The clients who choose my oil on photography want something special and unique,” Kelvin explains. “So we’d choose a photograph that encapsulates what they want to say about themselves - and what I feel is special and beautiful about them.” HIS FAVOURITE STYLE Kelvin enjoys something warm, subtle, and emotive. His favourite photographs of people, including brides and grooms, are soft, dreamy, and have the feeling of appreciating the person from a distance.

This photograph of Sophia expresses my appreciation for the modern oriental woman - beautiful, sensual, and dignified. Created in 2009.

He believes that memorable wedding photographs convey how people feel about each other. “It's something you'll cherish when you look back at your wedding after many years. It's therefore very important for me, as a photographer, to create a totally relaxed, enjoyable environment where couples can express themselves naturally,” he adds. “We may forget the details but we always remember the mood and feeling. This is what creates memories, and stories to tell the grandkids!” “Follow your heart,” is what Kelvin would say to any aspiring photographer who would need advice. “Make art not to entertain and amuse a paying public, but to express what you're truly in love with.” There, the master has said it.

I was moved by the soft, romantic texture of her wedding gown that was made with tulle and lace; like feathers of a swan. Created in 2007. C E L E B R A T E | 145

I poured my feelings into this photograph. I’m lucky to witness something so beautiful, pure and mysterious beyond words. Created in 2010.

ESSENTIAL GUIDES

THE MALE

Perspective

WE THIN K WE K NOW, BUT WE’V E GO T NO I DE A. ANT O I NE GI R AUD S HAR E S T H E HO N EST MALE P E RSPECT IV E ON WE DDI NGS . A wedding is a contradiction: you want it to be amazing and unforgettable and yet, you don't want to blow your life’s savings on it. That’s the first dilemma - your bride wants it dazzling and romantic. Everything should be perfect! At this point in time, you’ll probably hear this phrase from her more often than ever, “But darling, it’s a once–in-a-lifetime event.” This sentence alone justifies all extravagances to come. You’ll realise that she has a point - would the wedding be grand enough without her insistence? Reason fairly with her and negotiate until you both reach an agreement that satisfies both parties. M A N A G E E X P E C TAT I O N S Set paths straight in the beginning by being absolutely clear about each other’s expectations. The first step is to define a budget and stick to it. Don’t micro-manage. In other words, don’t pick on the nitty- gritty. Let your bride decide on how and where she’ll use the portion of the funds on, as long as it’s within the agreed budget. This will allow the wedding preparation to start on a healthy basis. Brides these days are able and willing to contribute financially to the wedding. Many girls would readily chip in to achieve that little extra bit that could change everything. Don’t hesitate to discuss it with her and don’t let the stress accumulate to a boiling point. Think of it this way: when it’s their money, they’ll tend to understand your point of view a better, if you get my drift. G E T I N V O LV E D One other important thing which she’ll really appreciate is that you get involved in the wedding preparations. She has a lot of fun during this time and will love for you to share these moments with her. While the next few tasks may appear boring, it’s really not that bad. Be sure to spend time with her when picking venues, photography, photography spots, flowers, a wedding theme and invitation cards designs among many other aspects. Whatever you do, she’ll certainly tell you that your effort’s not enough. But in her heart, she really appreciates your time a lot, and more so in the years to come. Getting married is a genuine commitment so take it as such from the very beginning. SUIT UP Besides your suit, tie and a matching boutonnière, you usually don’t need anything else. Make sure that you always get something nice for yourself. She’ll appreciate it when you pay attention to details. If you’ve never worn cuff links before, then it’s probably a good time to try. After all, you can never be overdressed on your wedding day. D - D AY Don’t sweat the small stuff and have fun! Go ahead, be merry, and enjoy the moment. Don’t be shy to play silly games too. You’ll treasure the memories all the more. There are and will always be things that don’t go according to plan but when you do encounter such situations, take it easy and relax; don’t let petty problems spoil the day. A word of caution though - regardless of how long you’ve been with her before, you’ll be expected to perform that night, so pay close attention to how much you drink.

SHOWCASES

Splendor A wedding experience at Raffles Hotel has always been about prestige, exclusivity, impeccable service and most of all perfection. Fittingly named “Raffles Romance – Timeless Charm with a New Attitude”, the wedding fair held in March 2012 unveiled an elegance unlike any other with whimsical wedding concepts for that perfect celebration. We were surrounded by elaborate floral ensembles of old world roses, elegant peonies and graceful lilies as we explored the wedding spaces. A surreal theme of romantic reds, gorgeous gold and plush purples by Heaven’s Gift lit up the room and created a stunning setting to the day’s programmes.

Surviving

ESSENTIAL GUIDES

A BRIDAL SHOW

Bridal shows are overwhelming only if you visit them unprepared. Well, fret not because we’ve got 20 tips to see you through these events! The excitement that comes with wedding planning is invigorating! Ideas fly and you might feel a little overwhelmed but thank goodness for bridal shows. Bridal shows (also popularly known as Wedding Fairs, Exhibitions, Showcases or Workshops) are held regularly throughout the year. Every show is different; some try to sell, some want to give you an experience. To know what you’re getting into, checking out the programme line-up will be your best bet. Some bridal shows channel inspiration as they showcase ideas and trends for your wedding decor and stationery amidst esteemed works of wedding photographers and videographers. Food tasting sessions are also provided to fulfil your cake and catering solutions. However, surviving a bridal show can be a tad overwhelming or confusing, and attending one feeling swamped can even lead to making mistakes that can be difficult to undo, especially if you haven’t figured out your wedding plans yet. So avoid being the haphazard soon-to-benewlyweds by using our 20 tips and you’ll be in good hands!

Images by TinyDot Photography C E L E B R A T E | 15 6

1. Always Register First. Once you’ve done that, you’re officially eligible to enter the show. This gets you into the list of guests who’ll receive exclusive door gifts, offers and discounts from participating vendors after the show. 2. Have An Open Mind. Take in everything with a pinch of salt. At this point, you may or may not know exactly the kind wedding services you actually need. However, don’t limit yourself to what you think you may need. Look around more and you might be inspired! 3. Do A Walkthrough. Visit as many booths as you can. Spend the time to do a complete walkthrough of all the vendors. You’ll never know which services might surprise you and end up on your personal list of potential vendors. 4. Mark It Down. Remember what they say about always having a notebook with you when inspiration strikes? The same goes for bridal shows - always bring a appointment book or have your smart phones ready to assist you. You’ll be able to talk to preferred vendors and set appointment dates easily. 5. Watch And Learn. Walk into bridal shows and learn as much as possible. Take it as an inspirational experience and digest whatever you can, as well as you can. 6. Dress Appropriately. First impression counts! Arriving in branded apparel from head to toe will only make you a target for sales. Dress to the occasion but try not to be over the top. 7. Be Comfortable. One bridal show will keep you occupied from 30 minutes to 3 hours. So keep those 4½ inch heels at home. A comfortable pair of ballerinas will be your best friend. Guys, grab a pair of leather shoes or loafers. Leave the slippers at home! 8. Get The Groom Involved. Yes, he is important! You'll probably want his ideas, comments and maybe credit card too before confirming any vendors.

9. Get Family And Friends Involved. Have the trusted few with you. These few are also known to be ruthless in talking you out of an impulse purchase. 10. Ask Questions. The purpose of a bridal show is for vendors to provide a personal and casual setting for you to ask about their products and services. The more you discuss with a vendor, the more you’re able to understand what they can and can’t do for you. To make the best out of the shows, these are the things you need to do: • Check if the vendors are available on your wedding date. Otherwise, you can skip to the next booth • Pick up their brochures • Keep a mental note of the vendor • Take time to chat with the vendor • Bounce ideas with them 11. Be Organised. Your wedding planning notebook should be attached to you at all times. Add comments and remarks about your experience with vendors and take note about what you liked about them. Collate their business cards and brochures right away and you’ll have less of a problem when you’re trying to sort them out at home. This allows you to quickly sort through vendors that you feel are a good fit. Being organised provides you focus as you narrow the vendors down to your final choice. 12. Create Your Name Card. It’s likely that every vendor you meet will be asking for your contact information. To minimise this repetition and to save yourself time, distribute cards printed your contact information: • • • •

Name Contact number Email address Wedding date

It’s also important that you never disclose your contact number unless you really want to be contacted by the vendor. Emails will give you a little more space and time to consider your replies.

C E L E B R A T E | 157

13. A Wedding Email Account. Create an email account especially for your wedding needs, one that both of you can access it easily. You’ll be amazed at how this simple step can help you weed out spam effectively. 14. Bring Your Research. It’s not uncommon to have with you colour swatches, magazine tear outs or any other inspiration that reflects your wedding theme. This makes it easy for you to ask about ideas and suggestions like wedding flowers, attire and even the cake to match your wedding. 15. Bring Your Camera. If photography is allowed, it’d be helpful to take some pictures that inspire your theme. These pictures not only serve as reminders of the vendors’ products and styles, they can also be used to create your mood boards. 16. Be Firm. Don’t be tempted by the promotions unless you’re absolutely sure that the products and services are really what you need. Confidence can always be built as you learn to use the following sentences: • I need some time to think about it. • I’d like to discuss with my family / wedding planner before making a decision. • No, thank you. I don’t want to sign up for a package now. Its okay with me if I don’t enjoy today’s promotion. I’ll look forward to the next one. • I’m just starting to plan the wedding, so I’d prefer to look around first. 17. Be Eco-Chic. Many vendors provide freebies like product samples and merchandise like pens, magnets and calendars. Only take the items when you are interested in the vendor. Unless if you really think it’s a cool freebie, then there’s no reason to clutter your home with odds and ends that you don’t need.

C E L E B R A T E | 15 8

18. Know Your Dress. Never sign up with a bridal boutique when you’ve neither seen their workmanship nor tried on their gowns. 19. Stay Till The End. Lucky draws and fashion shows are common highlights of any bridal show. The catch is that they’re usually the last items on the programme list. 20. You’re Overseas? Send Help. If you’re planning from out of town, send your trusted bridesmaids or parents to check out the event for you. They can collect vital wedding information just by using all of our tips (Okay, they probably can’t bring the groom but that’s it!) and report their findings. Above all, you’ve got to be bold, be firm and don’t forget to be nice. Take time to taste the cake; be sure to smell the flowers. Now, are you ready to have fun at your next bridal show?

Absolute love is a mix of companionship and intimacy; a lethal concoction that refreshes the utter devotion that lovers share. Lawrence couldn’t let this gift slip by and proposed with white roses and a diamond ring over a cozy, romantic dinner at home. Being in love was the most natural thing for Kelly and Lawrence as they sought an innate connection in each other. With a shared interest in traveling and dining, both endeavoured cultural splendour and painted their romance against the quiet of Bali’s riches.

IDOWEDDING

The stars are known to bring love together and so they’ve led Angeline and Jeri to Seoul where they were embraced in enchanting softness and the beloved sentiments of irresistible urbanity. Jeri had planned the proposal in Thailand and the simple moment was swathed in sweet honesty. A mandarin love song played on as he got down on one knee and proposed to a very surprised Angeline. Urged to release her too eager grip on his hands, she let go to receive the promise ring, and the hope of even greater things to come.

Who would have thought that a surprise birthday party for Kenneth could end in a surprise proposal for Joanne? Urged to open a present which was “meant” for him, Joanne was astonished to see a stunning ring staring back at her. So on bended knees he went and her heart became his prize. Their common pursuits of wellness retreats and yoga sessions were a hint of indulgence; and that same indulgence saw this couple through in Paris. The captivating beauty of Paris’ historical romance surpassed the thousand words that pictures paint and instead, endowed this remarkable love with an admired joie de vivre.

They travelled the world and from all the wonders they’ve gathered, Fiona and Alistair created an explosive celebration of love in Phuket by the ocean’s serene blues and nature’s garden greens. Their wedding revels in Thailand’s grace and their spirited personalities are reflected in a gorgeous tailor made wedding (right down from floral choices to stationery) that seamlessly fuses the elements of East meet West.

THE PROPOSAL - Alistair cleverly planned the proposal to be as forgettable as romantic skylines. His wishes were granted when Fiona said yes on a private yacht travelling along the Hudson River in New York.

THE GRAND MIX - the outdoor beckons and adventure is no stranger to this pair of love birds. Out on the beach, every smile was a chummy greeting and the laughter a familiar camaraderie. Their wedding was draped in gladness and grandeur; nothing less than spectacular.

The colours create a gorgeous memory of matching paper umbrellas, bridesmaid dresses, groomsmen’s ties and pure joy.

Space

EXPERT ADVICE

THEORY

Every location has its quirks and charms. As impossible as some may seem, Nick Oxborrow believes that with the right mind set and expertise, every venue has the potential to be beautiful. Creating a space for a wedding is making a setting that is personal for your special occasion. My mantra is that no space is ugly; with the right touches a space can become beautiful. Some locations will need more work than others, but the potential will always be there. The single most important aspect of styling a wedding is to achieve results that are over the expectation of the couple. The host and the guests should simply have a great time. In order to achieve that, I have to identify what a couple wants and work the ideas into the available space. It’s not always possible to create a wedding concept and make it fit the space; most often the wedding concept needs to be adjusted to fit the space. THE RIGHT FIT The most important decision a couple make when thinking about the style of their wedding is to make a concept fit a space. One should not ignore the obvious nature of the space. For example, a space with heavy gold carpet and deep wood interior is not an ideal space for electric pink. COMPLEMENT COLOURS Work with your space, not against it. The use of colour is a fine art between fashion and personal taste. Some people believe that black and blue clash; Giorgio Armani once mentioned that “when chosen correctly, it can match”. This is also my approach. Some classic rules:

Rule 1

Opposites attract. Look at a colour wheel and all the colours that are opposite to each other match perfectly.

Rule 2

Colours that are next to each other on the wheel match.

Rule 3

Colours of the same hue and vibrancy match. For instance, mixing electric and pastel colours usually won’t work!

2 56 | C E L E B R A T E

Nick Oxborrow is the founder of Fabulation. With 18 years of events experiences, he currently specialises in styling spaces for wedding events. Nick is in wedding because he loves all things beautiful.

PLAY WITH SPACE Use your space. Whatever you believe, be it Feng Shui, Zen or Roman symmetry - it's all about balance; so work with the nature of the room. If there are large pillars, don’t ignore them. I was once asked what I could do about two pillars that were blocking the stage. The fact is, if a table is sitting behind a pillar, the table won’t see the stage; there is nothing I can do about that. What can be done is either not lay the tables out in a way that blocks the stage or give the affected table projector screens or live video broadcast to view the activities on the stage (do note that these can help but are costly and can be a little impersonal).

BUDGET WISELY When it comes to weddings, the sky’s the limit. The sooner you have a clear budget in mind to make your space magical; the faster the stylist can tell you what is achievable. There are always solutions to budget versus style, the key is to work with the right people to make the best decision for the money you have. WORK CREATIVELY Find yourself with a less than perfect venue to have the wedding of your dreams? Remember that style itself is free; it is what you need to make the style that is the costly bit. A wedding which I had planned recently was to take place in a large open space, enclosed by a fairly large plain wall. As the solemnisation was not going to fill the space entirely, we were going to have large areas that were going to need some work. The initial idea was to board up the space entirely but it is not cost effective and the large blank wall would still be seen looming in the background. I used a few stunning trees to fill the space and accent it, instead of blocking it away. Guests sat under the trees as if they were in a forest whilst the bride walked down an aisle that was created by the branches of the trees we placed. The dynamics of distance is a luxury and the space felt grander and the cost much less exorbitant. BE BOLD The venue is one of the main decisions about physicality which you have to make regarding a wedding. The location, the logistics and the size all relate to the type of occasion that you will have. No matter what space you have, it can be made stunning if you can think outside the box. Stylists love challenges and taking an uninteresting space and turning it into something fabulous is great fun. Happy venue hunting.

Melissa in LONDON MELISSA TRAVELS THROUGH LONDON AND FINDS A BOUQUET OF FLORISTRY TALENTS.

March was an exciting month for Wonderland for Detailed Planners. Flowers are our new foray in the business and it was vital that I gain greater insight and experience working and learning from florists who were ahead of trends and tastes. So I did my research and wrote in to Jamie Aston, the esteemed floral designer based in London who is lauded as one of the city’s leading florist, and who himself has gained quite a large following in Korea and Japan. I took a week out and spent it learning, practising and visiting other pretty amazing florists in London as well. It was definitely an inspiring week.

25 8 | C E L E B R A T E

F E A T U R E

During one of the days spent with Jamie’s team, one of his staffed members, Katie who has studied floristry, took me to the London wholesale floral market at the New Covent Garden. The array of floral variety, bloom sizes, colours and freshness was just beyond belief! I had never seen anything like that in Singapore. From huge vintage-coloured roses to the fresh anemones available in such great abundance in the market made me extremely envious of the florists there.

C E L E B R A T E | 259

Back in the shop, we worked on numerous arrangements, using flowers that would otherwise be such treasured varieties in Singapore. We created vintage-coloured bouquets, centrepieces with tons of gorgeous ranunculus and even worked with fruits in hatbox arrangements which made for such perfect gifts. The experience and time spent with Jamie and his team was priceless, and now it is for me to work hard towards being able to send my team for the very exposure and training I undertook.

On the days when I didn’t have classes with Jamie, I scoured the London floral scene. I made a trip to Scarlet and Violet, to meet Vic Brotherson, and to visit the gorgeous shops owned by florist Nicky Tibbles of Wild at Heart. Vic of Scarlet and Violet was behind the flowers for Kate Moss wedding. I had the rare opportunity to meet and speak with Vic – and was star struck! For me, her style is the way forward for floral. It is less about deliberately arranged flowers but more about being natural and letting the beauty of flowers speak for themselves. Her gift for understanding texture, balance and being able to put flowers together has gained her great recognition in London.

26 0 | C E L E B R A T E

This was my first time seeing London with an objective and appreciating the floristry talent, and not as a student residing in the city or as a tourist. I look forward to greater exposure and hopefully bringing it back and sharing it with my team the best I can.
