Where StudyWill Abroad Study is About AbroadYour TakeFuture You? Building Global Competency Study abroad is just the first step in developing true global competence. CEA has developed curricula – a combination of in-class study and out-of-class learning – to help students gain knowledge and skills applicable to their future global interactions. CEA’s Global Campus programs are unique in that they include a core course focused on global competence in addition to active learning and immersion components. Moreover, CEA’s commitment to global competence goes beyond the study abroad experience itself

Dear students, parents and valued colleagues in the field of education abroad: In the past 12 years, CEA has helped almost 20,000 students realize their goals by providing the opportunity to experience international education and cultural exchange. During this time, we have been guided by two basic principles: to develop innovative academic options and provide exceptional customer service. We look forward to serving you with the same level of care. We understand that global competency is an important credential in an era of borderless careers. It is also difficult to achieve. Indeed, it is a lifelong journey. That journey begins with studying abroad. CEA has helped thousands of students take that important first step toward true global competency and intercultural understanding. We remain committed to our mission of fostering global citizenship among the students who study in our programs. CEA’s extensive experience as an international education innovator allows us to integrate local resources and cross-cultural learning with broader student goals and a focus on professional preparation. Our unique study abroad curriculum integrates new knowledge, academic collaboration, cultural immersion and hands-on learning methods into a broad and rewarding international experience. Our high-quality, academically sound study abroad options include a diverse portfolio of academic options delivered in fascinating and culturally rich locations around the globe. This is the CEA difference. With options in 16 countries worldwide, CEA programs allow students to select from a course catalog that not only provides a solid foundation for language and cultural understanding, but also serves traditionally under-represented disciplines such as business and engineering. The range of our academic programs, courses and areas of study expands every year. We are proud to be a leader in helping students acquire the tools and skills necessary to address critical issues of the future. We invite you to consider the many ways in which CEA can help you to achieve your goals.

Sincerely,

Brian Boubek Chairman & CEO

At CEA, our commitment to ensuring that you have a positive study abroad experience and successful learning outcome drives everything that we do. We survey our students at several points in the process to assess and enhance our services. Our commitment to quality customer service has resulted in overwhelmingly positive evaluations of our programs every year, reflected in these statistics:

CEA has been providing academic opportunities abroad since 1997. Our steadfast commitment to develop quality programs, offer individualized service and be the “first to market” with innovative technological tools has resulted in unprecedented growth since our inception. We have broken the mold of the tired and dated immersion and home-stay models of study abroad.

What our students say

CEA is by far the best program and takes care of students in the best way possible. I have spoken to other students in various programs and they all applaud CEA because they have the friendliest and most reliable staff. They offer around-the-clock service and enjoy helping students. The experience in itself was unbelievable and I accredit that to CEA and the staff. Dana Leone - 2009 Spring Semester, Seville, Spain (CEA Global Campus)

Exemplary Service

Grants & Scholarships

CEA has helped thousands of students realize their goals by providing the opportunity to experience international education and cultural exchange guided by two basic principles: to develop innovative academic options and provide exceptional customer service.

CEA believes that all students can benefit from a quality study abroad experience. In order to make this experience more affordable and available, CEA awarded $975,000 in grants and scholarships for the 2008/2009 academic year alone.

Service is one of the key factors that can make or break your study abroad experience. By its very nature, studying abroad will provide you with a window into different cultural and social norms. However, how well you are prepared for and adjust to the changes that come with your study abroad experience will largely depend on the caliber of service you receive.

Working closely with students, study abroad and international programs offices and financial aid offices, CEA makes utilizing aid for study abroad a smooth process. CEA has a Financial Aid Coordinator that will work with a student’s financial aid office to determine the amount and types of aid a student can receive for his/her program.

CEA was founded on the principle of providing outstanding service throughout the entire international education process from predeparture planning through your stay abroad and even after you have returned home. Our regionally focused University Relations team also provides the same level of service to U.S. faculty and advisors through campus visits, promotional events for students and instructional opportunities for staff and faculty. Every CEA program is evaluated to ensure that we are not only meeting but exceeding expectations. Program components such as advising, orientation, staff, academic quality and excursions are evaluated by pre-departure and re-entry surveys. Our Web-based evaluation system was designed exclusively for CEA and enables us to continually monitor the quality of our services and programs.

When financial aid questions arise, CEA answers by providing advice and guidance through a Financial Aid Coordinator. All students have the ability to utilize this resource while navigating the different options to finance their study abroad program.

Apply for a CEA Scholarship CEA awards $52,500 in scholarships each year to students studying on semester, trimester, year and summer programs. Scholarships are open to all CEA program participants that meet the eligibility requirements. To learn more about obtaining a CEA scholarship, visit www.GoWithCEA.com/Scholarships

Semester, Trimester and Year-long Programs

Summer Programs

Spending a semester, trimester or year abroad certainly has its advantages. Extended daily exposure and immersion in a foreign culture helps you achieve a higher level of global competency. A longer program provides you with the time to explore and become familiar with the intricacies and subtle differences of your host culture that would be missed in a shorter time frame.

Summer might just be the perfect time for you to explore the world around you while simultaneously earning credits toward the completion of your undergraduate degree. Programs vary in length from two to eight weeks, and offer a wide range of course options. CEA offers summer options in all of our program destinations, with the exception of Australia.

Short Term Programs

Internships

Maybe your academic schedule or budget doesn’t provide you with the opportunity to study abroad for an entire semester. CEA offers programs that can still accommodate your needs. Our short term options include J-Term (January) and Maymester programs, as well as additional 2-Week and 4-Week sessions that occur throughout the year.

Currently these programs are available in: • • • • • • • •

Viña del Mar, Chile San Jose, Costa Rica The French Alps, France Paris, France Guadalajara, Mexico Alicante, Spain Granada, Spain Salamanca, Spain

Participating in an international internship will help you to acquire the knowledge and necessary skills that will set you apart in today’s competitive job market. This kind of learning provides you with insight into global problems while building your resume with hands-on experience.

CEA internships are available for academic credit and are offered in: • • • • • •

Sydney, Australia San Jose, Costa Rica London, England Paris, France Cork, Ireland Madrid, Spain

CEA GLOBAL EDUCATION NETWORK

Academics CEA Global Campus programs foster the acquisition of new knowledge and global competency, and forge perspectives that will shape students’ personal lives and professional careers. Our goal is to offer programs that are responsive to both our students and our colleagues with North American institutions of higher education. Our programs are all learnercentered, interdisciplinary and intercultural in design.

Our academic offerings reach beyond traditional fields of study to include specialized courses on such currently relevant topics as: • • • • • • • •

Sustainable development The global economy and global governance Changing identities in a global world Communication, technology and society Global health Human rights World religions Conflict and conflict resolution

The curriculum throughout CEA’s Global Education Network is focused on two main objectives: developing intercultural skills, and respecting and engaging the local culture. There is no educational experience comparable to direct experience with a city’s historic sites, local language, global business enterprises, modern media, unique architecture and artistic expression. Learning in this “living classroom” is the key to true global awareness.

14

www.GoWithCEA.com | 1-800-266-4441

Faculty CEA’s academic strength is anchored in the quality of our faculty. In addition to advanced study, training and extensive teaching experience with U.S. students, over 40% of the faculty at the CEA Global Campuses hold a Ph.D. degree. In addition, they successfully integrate the host city into the classroom learning experience. Faculty at the campuses undergo particularly rigorous evaluation as to their instructional effectiveness, are held accountable to specific learning objectives and are mentored by the onsite academic leadership team. Five integrated layers of faculty assessment provide both qualitative and quantitative information drawn from student and peer evaluations, which are shared directly with instructors to improve effectiveness and quality.

The five levels of faculty assessment are: • • • • •

Class observation Faculty & course evaluation Faculty self-assessment Faculty development report Faculty performance review

Over the years, we have worked with over 1,000 colleges and universities across North America to successfully translate and transfer credit for coursework completed on CEA programs.

Experiential Learning

Local and Social Activities

Intercultural competence is a critical aspect of the study abroad experience and often manifests itself through immersion in a local community. CEA recognizes the importance of reinforcing academics with cross-cultural activities and excursions that provide ample opportunities for close and meaningful encounters with another culture through the following:

International staff members in each city are experts on local culture and will share their knowledge with you through a host of unique and interactive activities. You can take advantage of workshops, participate in historic tours and visit important government and economic sites.

Active Learning

Academic Excursions

The Global Campus classroom emphasizes an interactive approach to teaching and learning, including debates, group projects, student presentations and guest speakers.

You’ll get a chance to explore and experience the rich history and natural beauty of the regions surrounding the destination city by participating in CEA’s academic field excursions.

Language Exchange An activity that links the student with a native speaker of the host language to enhance language and intercultural skills for both.

Internships Supervised pre-professional learning experiences in which students apply their skills and knowledge in a professional setting under the mentorship of an internship supervisor.

Options in Housing CEA offers a selection of apartments, homestays, dorms, casas universitarias or residence halls, all of which are designed to enhance the international experience and assist students in adapting to their new communities. These varied housing options offer students different choices for language practice, peer interaction, independence, public transportation and study environments.

Iguazú Falls One of the Natural Wonders of the World, Iguazú Falls has been declared a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. Bordering three countries - Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay - the falls officially belong to Argentina. Four times the width of Niagara Falls, Iguazú Falls is spread in a horseshoe across 2,700 meters (1.67 miles). But the sheer size of these falls means nothing until this panorama is experienced in person. From the National Park of Iguazú, one can hike to many of the amazing falls, natural pools, outlooks and catwalks that extend right into the path of the falls. It is from here that the true meaning of the word “iguazú” - great water - is understood.

San Rafael, Mendoza Province Rafting & Wineries Mendoza is known as “the land of sun and good wine.” Blessed by great weather and wealthy soil, it has the perfect combination for grape growing. Housing

As a CEA student in Buenos Aires, you have access to two different housing options. We take pride in the fact that all of our housing options offer students the opportunity to learn about and take part in the local culture. This is a great complement to what students study in the classroom. CEA housing is located throughout the city with easy access to shopping areas, restaurants, and public transportation.

Homestay

Students may choose to live in an Argentine home. CEA homestays are located in various residential neighborhoods throughout the city of Buenos Aires such as Belgrano, Palermo, Barrio Norte and Saavedra. Families are chosen for their friendliness and helpfulness to the student. This option is perfect for students who are looking to experience family life in Argentina, and who are willing to adapt to the structure and values of the family. Homestays allow each participant to continue practicing Spanish outside of class while learning about daily life in Argentina.

Residencia

Students may also choose to live in a Residencia, an off-campus residence hall. CEA has partnered with a quality Residencia located in the neighborhood of Palermo. Students will live with U.S., Argentine, and international students. This option is perfect for students who wish to interact with their U.S. and international peers on a daily basis and who are looking for a bit more independence. The Residencia has proven to be a great way for students to make lifelong friends from Argentina and around the world.

The Viña del Mar Experience Viña del Mar is truly an amazing place to learn Spanish. Lying along the seemingly endless coast of Chile, Viña is very conveniently located to allow visitors the opportunity to enjoy the magnificent natural wonders that the country has to offer. Santiago, the capital, is a short drive away as are the ski slopes of Valle Nevado high up in the Andes Mountains. Viña provides the best possible stepping point into a semester or summer of language and culture study in Chile. An array of museums, theaters, cathedrals, shopping, cafes, restaurants, pubs, discos, beaches and parks, as well as events all around the city will give you the opportunity to experience life Chilean style. While not a cosmopolitan city, Viña attracts Chileans from all over the country. Because of the relaxed atmosphere of this beach city, Chileans know Viña as a great place to escape with the family from the daily grind as well as to enjoy the fresh seafood dishes it is known for (try the ceviche). Chile, known for being geographically one of the longest and most narrow countries in the world, stretches across almost half of the South American continent. As a result it has a great many things to see and experience. The country’s topography ranges from high mountains and arid deserts to beautiful beaches and lakes. CEA makes it easy for you to experience it all by offering you many opportunities and excursions to get to know the country and its culture. Viña del Mar and Chile will provide an unforgettable experience for any student wanting to study Spanish and learn about Latin America first-hand.

The Shanghai Experience The largest and most populous city in all of China, Shanghai is vibrant with ancient cultural traditions, dynamic arts and architecture and cutting-edge technology and business development. Shanghai is one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world, with over 20 million inhabitants. Located on China’s central eastern coast at the mouth of the Yangtze River, Shanghai was originally based in fishing and textiles industries, both of which still play prominent roles today. The city flourished as an important center of commerce between the east and the west, and has become a multinational hub of finance and business. Its relatively new reputation as a cosmopolitan center of culture and design has led to Shanghai being described as the “showpiece” of the world’s fastest-growing economy. Students studying History or Culture take part in such traditional Chinese ceremonies and practices as Tai Chi, one of the original Chinese martial arts; or the Chinese Tea Ceremony, including preparation methods, tasting methods and the occasions upon which tea is traditionally consumed. You’ll view a performance by the Shanghai Acrobatics Troupe at the Shanghai Center or take in a live jazz performance, celebrating Shanghai’s little-known but long tradition of jazz music appreciation. If you’re a Language student, you can practice your Mandarin skills with your contemporary Chinese students and help them to improve their own English skills in the process. As a CEA student in Shanghai, regardless of your area of study, the immersion activities and excursions that CEA hosts are designed specifically to draw real-world and compelling connections to your academic goals.

The San Jose Experience The city of San Jose is guarded by majestic volcanoes and green hills that radiate the natural beauty of the diverse country of Costa Rica. One of the most unique features of studying in San Jose is your exposure to areas representative of practically every climate and ecosystem, as the territory extends from almost sea level at several points near the central Pacific coast up to the country’s highest peak, Mt. Chirripó, at an elevation of 3,820 meters; and down to the very wet eastern slopes of the Central Volcanic Cordillera in a section of Braulio Carrillo National Park. San Jose is a breathtaking area of the world. There are few other locations where you can experience critical lessons in Preservation and Environmental Studies as well as in Business, Economics, Political Science and Social Justice. Attend the Costa Rica International Arts Festival, where the rich and diverse program includes parades, music, dance, theater and film. Cultural Studies majors will not want to miss the Dia de los Boyeros, in the town of San Antonio of Escazú, a fascinating, colorful parade of oxcarts, competitions and a traditional “blessing of the animals” ceremony. Costa Rica’s Independence Day is an opportunity for History students to see the real manifestation of their classroom curriculum ― nearly all celebrations include a parade in which regional schools perform the national anthem, carry the Costa Rican Flag and twirl batons.

The Prague Experience In Prague, old-world charm meets a hip, contemporary urban atmosphere. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, Prague offers centuries of history as well as innovative art and music. You will explore the cultural and artistic expression of the ages through Prague’s beautiful architecture. Sometimes called the “sleeper” of Europe’s post-Cold War cities, Prague boasts a dynamic commercial and artistic culture, world-renowned for its ever-changing opportunities. As a CEA student, experiential learning is nurtured within your program’s curriculum. Designed to help you make relevant connections between the subjects you’re studying and Prague’s position on the world map, you’ll participate in exclusive activities that are learner-centered and culturally rich. If you’re an Anthropology major or just a history buff, your textbook comes to life at the Burning of Witches, an event celebrating the old pagan tradition of welcoming spring through bonfire gatherings and live musical concerts. Unique events such as the International Film Festival in Karlovy Vary or the Summer Shakespeare Festival are ideal, real-world stages for you as a Film or Media Studies student. Architectural and Engineering theory is given context by visiting and studying first-hand, such extraordinary masterpieces as the Wallenstein Palace, the Charles Bridge and the Belvedere Summer Palace.

Why Choose Prague

Where East meets West and past meets present Prague is one of the most historically and culturally rich cities in Europe, where students will find countless theaters, symphonies, museums and cafés among the blackened statues, cobblestoned streets and magnificent architecture that ranges from medieval to Renaissance and from cubist to socialist styles. It has been said that Prague stands at the crossroads of Europe, where the East meets the West and the past meets the present. Experience the city’s growing cosmopolitan character and its economic transformation as a member of the European Union, while taking in the history and scenery of a time gone by. This combination of past and present makes Prague the perfect location for a truly rewarding study abroad experience.

Active Learning Example in Prague Prague Art & Architecture Explore the city of Prague while studying art and architecture spanning more than ten centuries, from the styles of Romanesque through the various stages of Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and into the 20th century (including art nouveau, Czech cubism and socialist realism). Students will explore first-hand Prague’s Castle and many of the city’s glorious churches and monuments as examples of Europe’s most important architectural styles. Through a combination of lectures and excursions into the city, including numerous museums and galleries, the aim of the course is to have students develop an understanding of art and architecture in Prague as products not only of individual artists, but also of the larger cultural influences of their age.

“To make accessible to students of Central Europe, and all parts of the world, the highest values of Anglo-American educational principles, and the best of Central European traditions. Our aim is to prepare graduates to excel as citizens, leaders and specialists in their chosen fields of work.”

Studying abroad in Prague is an experience I will never forget. Looking back, I enjoyed the language barrier and the intensity of differences to that of my home country, as it taught me to be less of a talker and more of a listener/observer. I was given the chance to witness the aftermath of a country that is trying to built itself up from Communism – a historically tied opportunity that I feel few get to experience. Further, Prague was a great place to meet people from all over the world, and has great proximity to other countries as far as travel is concerned. CEA’s Prague program I would recommend to people who don’t want their study abroad program to overshadow their experience. CEA is always there when you need them, but gives you the space to discover and explore, which I enjoyed. Kelly Russell - 2008 Fall Semester (Liberal Arts & Social Sciences)

The London Experience As the capital city, London is home to hundreds of art galleries and museums, thousands of restaurants and pubs, and more than 150 theaters. It is a magnificent mix of historical landmarks and modern sights (the London Eye and the Tate Modern), excellent shopping, open spaces and an eclectic range of the arts. CEA is committed to making the connection between your classroom studies and the London that exists outside of the textbooks. From the pomp and ceremony of the Changing of the Guard to the grandeur of Buckingham Palace, London’s culture and history is at your fingertips. London is literally a playground for students of the arts and those who appreciate the arts - the National Gallery houses one of the world’s richest collections of Renaissance and Impressionist paintings, while the British Museum has a wealth of treasures with seven million objects representing the rich history of human cultures, mirroring the city of London’s global variety.

Cockney For Beginners Ask an American friend to ‘pop the hood’ and it is understood; ask an English person the same thing, and they might look at you as if you had just landed from another planet. Spending time abroad not only broadens your horizons, but also your language skills and vocabulary. Different dialects, expressions and phrases all contribute to the richness of the English language, and London is certainly no exception. This fact is most evident in the wayward accent known as Cockney. To truly be considered Cockney the speaker is supposed to be born “within the sounds of the Bow bells,” or no more than three miles from St. Mary-le-Bow Church in the Cheapside district of London. However, Cockney encompasses more than just one’s origins or the distinct accent – it also has its own set of slang. Known as rhyming slang, it was created by thieves and those afoul of the law to communicate with one another without the authorities knowing what they were saying. To make a Cockney rhyme, the word you want to say is replaced with a word or phrase that sounds similar. As if this weren’t confusing enough, part of the rhyming phrase is dropped so that it becomes a sort of code. For example, “trouble” rhymes with “Rubble,” as in “Barney Rubble”; therefore, instead of saying “Stay out of trouble,” a Cockney might say, “Stay out of Barney.”

The Aix-en-Provence Experience Often referred to as the “city of fountains and light,” Aix is one of the most beautiful and liveliest towns in the south of France. You’ll undoubtedly feel the essence of one of Aix’s most favored sons, Paul Cezanne, who seems to have painted the city in all of its aesthetic loveliness. The bustling daily outdoor markets, the open air concerts and cultural events, the busy student nightlife and the nearby Mediterranean coast and French Alps all make Aix-enProvence a perfect study abroad destination year-round. You’ll have every opportunity as a CEA student in Aix to get involved and develop hands-on experience. Fine and Performing Arts students will find out-of-the-classroom opportunities to hone their crafts, whether it be studying oil painting under the tutelage of a local artist or studying theater with an Aix native. Architecture and Religious Studies students will particularly enjoy the excursion to Avignon, where you will visit the Pope’s Palace, the largest Gothic palace in Europe, as well as the nearby Pont du Gard, built shortly before the Christian era to allow the aqueduct of Nîmes to cross the Gard River. Biology or Environmental Studies will come alive through an excursion to the Camargue, home to more than 400 species of birds as well as the famous white Camarguais horses.

The French Riviera Experience Located in the south of France on the Mediterranean Sea, the French Riviera is at the crossroads of Italy, the Alps, Monaco and Provence. It is one of the most stunningly beautiful areas of the country, boasting a sub-tropical climate, sandy beaches, vineyards and an average of 300 days of sunshine a year. Sophia Antipolis itself was founded as a modern research park, bringing together research, technology and business with cultural and social modernity. This program provides CEA students with the chance to study in a modern seat of technology and business while living in the charm, culture and sophistication of the French Riviera. Students of History or the Arts will relish the opportunity to participate in an excursion to Grasse, the center of the perfume industry since the Renaissance. Film, Music and Performing and Media Arts students can view their crafts in motion during a visit to the “star” of the French Riviera, Cannes, world-renowned for its International Film Festival. Follow the footsteps of Matisse and Chagall in Nice, the largest town on the Riviera, and walk along the famous Formula 1 racing track in the glamorous principality of Monaco. Or simply get away from it all on a trip to the charming perched villages of Eze or Saint-Paul-de-Vence.

Cannes Film Festival CEA students studying on a Spring program have an exclusive opportunity to participate in an internship at the Cannes Film Festival. Go online to learn more! Known throughout the world for its annual international film festival, where movie stars and other celebrities shine, Cannes is probably the most glamorous spot on the French Riviera. Le Festival de Cannes (the Cannes Film Festival) began in 1939 and has since become the “granddaddy of all film festivals.” This prestigious event is renowned not just for the critical role it plays in launching careers and movies, but for defining art in cinema. The festival is held annually for two weeks each May at the Palais des Festivals, with the 63st celebration set to be held May 2010. Although thousands of films are screened during this time and over 200,000 people flood the event, it is predominately reserved for professionals in the film industry and the press. However, as a CEA intern at the festival, you may find yourself face-to-face with some of the world’s biggest stars.

The Paris Experience One of the great cultural and intellectual centers of the world, Paris is said to be the heart, soul and imagination of its nation. It also stands tall as thea administrative, commercial and industrial center of France. Renowned for its intellectuals, artists, writers and revolutionaries, Paris represents the perfect combination of tradition and modernity. As home to French haute couture, a rich and varied cuisine, and internationally renowned landmarks and museums such as the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower, this fashionable capital is among the most vibrant and intriguing in Europe. Continued innovation and trendsetting art, politics and commerce extend Paris’ influence well beyond its borders. Paris was host to the first CEA Global Campus site, which opened its doors to students in 2005. Curriculum comes to life through real-world experiences and professionally focused active learning opportunities. Diversity is celebrated at CEA’s evening at the Paris Mosque, where students experience a historical Mosque and its remarkable mosaic walls and gardens. An Islamic specialist will discuss the symbolic significance of the decoration and the Islamic rituals that have influenced its architecture. Fine Arts students enjoy visiting Giverny, whose museums trace Monet’s life and whose gardens continue to reveal inspiration for his work; while History students benefit from visiting Reims, whose Cathédrale Notre-Dame was the stage for crowning French kings from Clovis to Charles X.

Active Learning Example in Paris Human Rights: Universal Principles in World Politics Focusing on the ever-present threat to international human rights law and the many victims of the abuse of state power, activists from Amnesty International (AI) meet with students to discuss the principles, methods and experiences of human-rights defenders as they confront ambassadors and officials of rights-violating states. Students visit the French chapter of AI to meet with researchers and volunteers engaged in documenting human rights violations, drafting emergency appeals and organizing demonstrations. Students in this class organize and run, in conjunction with AI youth programs, a branch office for student activism and volunteer service. The legal/institutional approach to human rights is a subject students address directly at UNESCO headquarters in Paris. Students are given the opportunity to challenge state representatives and UNESCO officials on the resources of UNESCO human rights budgets and on the response to human rights violations of many of the organization’s member states.

The Berlin Experience Berlin, the capital city and one of the 16 German states, is lively and dynamic, with countless cultural, political and commercial events taking place around the clock. Berlin boasts three opera houses and hundreds of theaters, museums and galleries. It is one of the most influential centers in European politics, culture and science, and the city serves as an important hub of continental transportation. Berlin’s economy is based on the service sector, encompassing a diverse range of media and life-science corporations, convention venues, research institutes and creative industries. With CEA you will not only tour Berlin by bike, visit flea markets and attend the world-famous Berlin Beer Festival, you’ll become a part of this city steeped in truly transformative political history. Starting from the Allied Checkpoint Charlie to the Brandenburg Gate, you will follow the route of the famed Berlin Wall and learn the history of the country’s 28-year separation. Instead of simply reading about it, you will come to understand why the Wall was erected, how it fell and how Berlin is dealing with the scars of its past. Religious Studies and History students will make emotional, real-world connections to their curriculum by touring the city’s traditional Jewish quarter. Traces of the old Jewish community can be found by visiting the New Synagogue, galleries of the Jewish Renaissance, and the Holocaust Memorial.

The Cork Experience The largest city of the Republic of Ireland, Cork is a charming city and a major Irish seaport. The two channels of the River Lee, which embrace the city center, are spanned by many bridges, giving it a distinctive continental air. The people of Cork exuberate the welcoming, talkative and proud nature for which their long heritage has come to be known. It is often said that despite its small size, Cork has all of the amenities of a large city while still retaining its pleasant atmosphere and extreme friendliness. CEA students make powerful connections to their academic courses through participation in immersion activities and excursions, all carefully designed to relate to classroom lessons and discussion. The Cork Folk Festival’s annual objective is straightforward ― to present the best of local, national and international folk and traditional music, song and dance. Attend this celebration of music as you dig deeper into your Cultural Studies curriculum. Be a part of the Frank O’Connor International Short Story Festival, the longest established annual festival dedicated to the form in the English-speaking world, as you draw critical ties to your Literature and Humanities coursework. As you study Fine or Performing Arts, you’ll have an opportunity to discuss your craft with contemporary artists in Cork by participating in the annual Art Trail, in which students, staff and the wider community are invited to experience international, national and local artists. The breadth and depth of your connections to the people of Cork and the culture of Ireland are endless as a CEA student.

The Gaelic Athletic Association (the G.A.A) is deeply rooted in Irish identity through its nationwide network of clubs promoting Hurling, Gaelic Football, Camogie and other Irish sports. Students will learn how politics, revolution, sports and culture were woven into the history of the GAA. Students will meet with representatives of the GAA at Croke Park, their HQ and see hurling and Gaelic football played at the highest level. Through observation and personal interviews, students gain insights into how popular culture is preserved, created and expressed as well as how such cultural manifestations shape individual and national identities within contemporary Ireland.

The Florence Experience The capital of the Tuscan region, and a historic world-leader in culture and politics, this Renaissance city is also a contemporary and cosmopolitan hub of groundbreaking fashion, design and business. The CEA Global Campus offers countless opportunities to make Florence your “living classroom”. As a student at the Florence CEA Global Campus, you enjoy exclusive opportunities to take your learning experiences into the real world. Instead of just lecturing about painting-conservation techniques, your instructor will take you to workshops to observe restorers in action. Rather than studying business principles from a textbook, you can meet face-to-face with successful business owners for discussions about the global marketplace. As a student of Sociology and the Arts, real experiences in the field will develop an awareness of sophisticated ways of looking at food, its rich cultural history and Italy’s many regional variations. As a Fashion student, experience Florence as a mecca of the industry by attending the annual Pitti Uomo Fashion Fair, walking the trade markets and talking to designers and manufacturers about their creations and business operations. The home of philosophers and artists such as da Vinci and Michelangelo will become your home, while the Galleria dell’Accademia and the Uffizi Gallery will become your classrooms. History and culture will come alive during several feast days, including the festival of Florence’s Patron Saint John the Baptist, celebrated with a local parade, a calcio storico (historical soccer) game and a fantastic fireworks display over the Arno. Whatever your area of study, CEA welcomes you as la bella vita awaits!

They take part in lectures, readings and discussions. Students apply their visual and manual skills to produce several painted works during the course. The course ends with the collaborative production of a show and a “book of the show.”

The Rome Experience Rome is called the Eternal City, and has enjoyed an almost uninterrupted history of global power and cultural leadership for more than two millennia. Today “Roma” is also a hub of contemporary culture, cuisine and fashion, and is one of Europe’s major capitals of politics and commerce. As a student at the CEA Global Campus in Rome, you have many exclusive opportunities to take your learning a step further. Instead of just reading about the history of the Catholic Church, visit the Vatican and talk with church leaders and theologians about the history and future of their institution. Rather than merely exploring textbook principles of human rights, meet face-to-face with immigrant leaders and state officials to discuss the tensions and challenges of global migration and ethnic minorities. Perhaps one of the most important weeks of the year in Rome is Holy Week, for which the Pope leads the procession for the “Via Crucis” on Good Friday through the streets of Rome to the Coliseum, where he greets the crowds waiting for him. It is a dramatic event that History and Religious Studies students will not want to miss. History, Political Science and Sociology students all find unique parallels to their lessons by celebrating the Festa della Repubblica and attending the grand military parade in honor of the founding of the Italian Republic after World War II.

Active Learning Example in Rome Microeconomics Students visit the leading Rome-based institutions on economic decision-making: the Senate, Chamber of Deputies, Prime Minister’s office, the Central Bank of Italy, the headquarters of the President of the Republic and the Constitutional Court. Examples are taken from present events in order to analyze their likely impact on the students’ lives as well as on society at large, furthering their awareness of the most recurrent microeconomic manifestations encountered today. This enables students to identify, explain and discuss many of the features of markets, business decisions and the forces that drive consumption and production.

The Krakow Experience Krakow is a magical place ― a city wrapped in legend, a fascinating historic town oozing with charm and character, and one of Central Europe’s most ancient and beautiful cities. Named the European City of Culture in 2000 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Krakow is undoubtedly Poland’s cultural capital. The city’s rich legacy of unique historical relics reflects some of the most important trends in European culture. Such famed sites as the Renaissance Royal Castle at Wawel, the gothic St. Mary’s Basilica, the historical trade pavilions of the Cloth Hall and the formerly separate Jewish city of Kazimierz are must-sees for international students studying in Krakow, as are tours of its socialist-realist, industrial architecture, unique to this jewel of Central Europe. As a CEA student, your access to first-hand perspectives and recantations of the Holocaust and World War II is unprecedented and exclusive. Your CEA studies will connect the valuable lessons of Culture and History embedded in your curriculum with engaging and active learning opportunities such as a visit to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial, a tour of the Krakow Ghetto area accompanied and narrated by a Holocaust survivor and an academic excursion to the factory of Oskar Schindler. Hiking, river-rafting and a visit to the Wieliczka salt mine are also activities designed to help you to get to know your host city in a meaningful way. You will not want to miss the Jewish Cultural Festival, packed with special events, workshops, concerts and exhibitions. With a student population of more than 120,000, Krakow is a study environment unlike any other.

You will embark on a walking tour to see the ruins of the Plaszów concentration camp and the two remaining parts of the ghetto wall as Mr. Offen describes what Jewish life was like before the War and during the war in the ghetto.

“In my family, over 50 people were murdered by the Nazis and only three survived – my two older brothers and I. Through sharing my story with you and my "Journey of Witnessing and Healing," my dream and hope is to create "Second Generation Witnesses." You don't have to be Jewish or a Holocaust survivor. It's for all the wounded who want to understand the power of good and evil and want to create goodness in the world. It is about a process of self-confrontation. As a way of witnessing, and to better understand what happened, we will walk and try to experience some of the actual sites where this global tragedy occurred, my birthplace and places where my family and I lived during the war.... It's still in the earth and in the air.” - Bernard Offen www.GoWithCEA.com | 1-800-266-4441

The St. Petersburg Experience World-class museums, elegant palaces and stunning architecture make St. Petersburg a breathtaking city. While its lively arts and vibrant nightlife make it a draw for international students, the city’s magnificence, its imperial history and its palaces steeped in political and cultural importance are what make St. Petersburg such an intriguing and complex host city. This Russian gem has retained much of its historic architecture, from pastel-colored palaces to towering gilded spires and grand monuments. Through CEA, you will experience academic excursions and immersion activities that connect you to your studies. Cultural Studies enthusiasts appreciate a visit to a traditional Russian “banya,” an integral part of Russian culture since the Middle Ages. A visit to the Baltika brewery, established in the last days of the former USSR (which has since become a joint venture), gives Business and Economics students firsthand access to strategists who explain the business side of how the brewery operates, followed by a hands-on lesson on how the beer is brewed. Students of the Fine and Performing Arts appreciate the organized visits to internationally famed museums including the Russian Museum, the Ethnographic Museum, the Hermitage Museum and the Alexander Pushkin Memorial Museum. Architecture students appreciate visits to St. Isaak’s Cathedral, the Peter and Paul Fortress and Yusupov Palace.

The Barcelona Experience Barcelona is a city unlike any other, gracefully bridging tradition and contemporary life. From its bustling central boulevards and stylish modern streets to its revered architecture and user-friendly urban design, Barcelona is a mecca of preservation and renovation, combining the charm of its medieval Gothic quarter with its awe-inspiring surrealist facades. Barcelona, CEA’s most popular Global Campus site, has been prominent in the geo- and socio-political systems that have defined Spain and its autonomous regions for centuries. The autonomous community of Catalonia, of which Barcelona is the capital, has a complex and historical identity. From its first independent establishment to the long period of domination by Castile, and even during the Franco dictatorship, it proved impossible to stifle Catalan ethnicity. Barcelona has long been at the forefront of Spanish political activism and is one of the most dynamic and prosperous commercial centers in all of Spain. Catalonia continues to evolve with the arrival of large numbers of immigrants from Asia, Africa and South America. As a CEA student, you will have unprecedented access to activities that will deepen your understanding of the culture, politics, economy and history of this incredible city.

Nestled on a hill at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, the Alhambra has watched over the city of Granada since the 9th century. Considered to be Spain’s most important architectural monument, it is an expansive castle that housed Granada’s rulers for more than six centuries. It was originally built as a fortress, strategically placed to overlook the valley below, and its name, Alhambra, actually comes from an Arabic word meaning “red fort.” The original structure, however, was expanded through centuries of different rulers, leading to a fascinating blend of contrasting architectural styles found throughout the complex. Today, the Alhambra is made up of three distinct sections: Palacios Nazaríes (Royal Palace or Nasrid Palaces), the Gardens of the Generalife and the Alcazaba, which is the original fortress. The Alcazaba, the oldest and perhaps most primitive of the three sections, boasts the most spectacular views of the mountains, city and outlaying valley below. The Generalife offers tranquil gardens filled with shaded walkways, patios, fountains, flowers and lush vegetation. The Palacio Nazaríes, however, is the architectural highlight of the entire structure. Made up of a complex series of rooms and courtyards, its ceilings feature finely knotted wood and elaborate honeycombed stucco, while the walls are intricately carved with Arabic poetry and scripture or are beautifully tiled in ceramic mosaics. The patios incorporate water, an important element in Arab culture, in beautiful fountains and reflecting pools. The Alhambra must be experienced first-hand to truly understand the impact of its beauty. It has been said that those who can only visit one monument in Spain should make it the Alhambra. A single visit can make anyone find themselves promising to return again someday.

CEA Granada is the most culturally eclectic experience that a young person could undertake. The infusion of culture, the diverse landscape and its position in Spain all give it qualities that give it the accessability of a metropolitan city but the quaintness of a small town. If you want to learn the Spanish language, I would definitely recommend going to Granada, and if you enjoy the arts, I would recommend going to Granada, and if you enjoy the nightlife, I would go to Granada. Basically, Granada is one of those places – at first you’re cynical of it because of the extreme cultural adaptation, but then you grow to love it passionately and by the time you have to leave, you feel as though you are leaving a part of you there. I think everyone should go there just once, because it is more different than any city you’ ll ever find. Tiffany Meier - 2008 Fall Semester - Early Start (Spanish Language & Culture)

The Madrid Experience Madrid is a regal, modern and progressive capital city. It´s a city of aesthetic intrigue, where tall, glass skyscrapers rise above historic royal palaces and lush, open-air parks. Madrid´s many museums and art galleries provide a feast for modern culture lovers. The city has history rich in political development and a prominent significance in modern-day Europe. It has undergone many alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries, which are reflected in a mixture of architectural styles, political ideologies and historical landmarks. As one of the CEA Global Campus sites, Madrid becomes a “living classroom” as we take you from the textbook curriculum into the real world of this magnificent capital city. For students majoring in History or Political Science, your guided tour of the Royal Palace, including the armory and pharmacy, will bring your textbook studies to life. An academic excursion to the neighboring city of Toledo gives Literature students access to one of the greatest literary settings of all times, the capital of Castilla-La Mancha, the land of Don Quixote. There is perhaps no better example of Medieval architecture for students to experience than that of the two incredible cities of Avila and Salamanca. You´ll learn first-hand about preserved treasures such as the 11th century stonewalls encircling Avila, and the many striking Baroque sandstone buildings of Salamanca.

The Seville Experience Seville is one of the most beloved, mystical and quintessentially Spanish cities in all of Spain. It lies in the region of Andalusia, and was a cultural epicenter even before the centuries-long Moorish occupancy. Seville’s charming character is legendary, and it is known for its comfortable size, its many Spanish traditions such as bullfighting and flamenco dancing, incredible cuisine, colorful festivals and celebrations that take place all year long. Your experience in Seville – one of the CEA Global Campus sites - will be marked by active learning and hands-on curriculum. History and Cultural Studies students will find an academic excursion to Cordoba to be fascinating, as you explore famed sites such as the Alcazar, the world-famous Mezquita, the Moorish mosque and neighboring Cathedral, the lively Andalusian traditions of flamenco and bullfighting, and the old Jewish quarter, where a synagogue built in 1315 is located. Performing Arts, Music and Dance students will see their studies come to life through taking in a Flamenco show in the Triana neighborhood in Seville, often considered the birthplace of flamenco. Perhaps the most emblematic symbol of Spanish culture and considered to be a dynastic art form, the Flamenco is passed down and developed from generation to generation. You´ll learn all about the importance and meaning of this dance to Andalusia, Spain and the world over.

Agreement & Release 1. I understand that my participation in a study abroad program (“Program”) organized by CULTURAL EXPERIENCES ABROAD, INC. (“CEA”), an Illinois corporation, is contingent on CEA’s review and acceptance of my CEA Application (“Application”). 2. I acknowledge that I have read and accept the terms and conditions set forth in CEA’s Polices, available on CEA’s website at www.GoWithCEA.com/policies, which are incorporated herein by reference and which constitute part of this Application. This agreement is a legally binding contract. 3. I acknowledge that I may engage in activities that involve risk of loss of property, personal injury, illness or death. I hereby assume all of the foregoing risks and I release, waive, discharge and agree to hold harmless CEA and its officers, directors, employees and agents from any loss or liability in any way relating thereto. I unconditionally release CEA from any claims for damage, injury, loss or expense of any nature resulting from events beyond its control, including but not limited to acts of God, war, strikes, crime, terrorism, sickness, or quarantine, government restrictions or regulations. This release also applies to any losses arising from the use of any vehicle or from the selection of, or from any act or omission by, any housing agency, host family, travel agency, transportation provider, hotel or excursion provider, host institution, company or individual. 4. I understand that I will be traveling to a foreign country, with different customs, standards, laws and risks than I am unaccustomed to. I understand and acknowledge that (a) I may become sick or injured while participating in a Program; (b) I may be arrested or imprisoned if I do not conform to local laws; (c) there exists crime in foreign countries and that I may be a victim of crime; and (d) I may not agree with local customs and standards. I accept the above-described risks and other risks associated with travel in, to and among foreign countries. I understand that I am responsible for exercising caution and common sense at all times and that CEA is not responsible for my safety or acts of third parties, and I agree to release and not hold CEA responsible for any such problems I encounter in a Program. 5. I understand that as a Participant in the Program, I will be residing in housing arranged by CEA. I also understand that during the Program orientation, housing practices will be explained to me and a housing contract will be presented. I agree to abide by the terms of this Agreement and Release as well as any additional agreements or contracts required during the pendency of the program. In particular, and with respect to housing, I acknowledge and understand that I am solely responsible for my own possessions and safety of those possessions and, that CEA is not responsible for theft or burglary of my possessions, nor is CEA responsible for lost or misplaced possessions of mine at any time. I also acknowledge that it is my sole responsibility, relating to my personal possessions, that I inquire from my insurance company, whether any particular property or rental insurance policy I maintain or that are maintained for me, cover my possessions, will be valid in the location of my study abroad program, and if not, that if I wish for my possessions to be insured, that it is my sole responsibility to deal with insurance providers who will cover my possessions in the location of my study abroad program, and it is my sole responsibility to understand, make available, or obtain coverage for my personal possessions in the location of my study abroad program. 6. If I am sick or injured while participating in the Program, I authorize CEA to take such action as it considers necessary to secure treatment and/or transportation back to the United States. I release CEA from any liability relating to this medical care. I agree to provide the name of an Emergency Contact whom CEA may contact should CEA deem it necessary. If CEA incurs and expense on my behalf that is not covered by insurance, I agree to make immediate repayment upon my return. I hereby acknowledge that this Application does not create any affirmative duty or responsibility for CEA to take any action should I become sick or injured while participating in a Program. 7. I also authorize release to CEA, through my signature below, protected health and mental health records, such release expiring on completion of the Program. By signing below and providing this release, I understand that: • I can revoke this Authorization at any time by giving my written revocation to the Disclosing Provider/Covered Entity. My revocation is not effective as to disclosures already made and actions already taken in reliance upon this Authorization. • I can refuse to sign this Authorization, and the disclosing provider/plan may NOT condition treatment, enrollment in the health plan or eligibility for benefits on whether I sign this Authorization. • I am authorizing disclosure of information protected under federal law. This information, once disclosed, may be subject to re-disclosure by the recipient and may no longer be protected by state and federal law. • I may ask the provider/covered entity for a copy of the protected health information being disclosed under this Authorization.

• I will be provided with a signed copy of this Authorization. • A photostatic copy of this document shall have the same effect as the original of same. Authorization to release health and mental health records does not create an affirmative duty or obligation for CEA to do a background check of Applicant as Applicant remains obligated to be honest and forthright, and not omit or misrepresent information requested. CEA reserves the right to obtain records pursuant to this release, within the applicable period, in the event of ambiguity of information, disputes or unanticipated or unusual conduct exhibited during the Program. 8. I will comply with all CEA’s Policies, including its rules, standards, instructions and practices for program participation behavior, including housing. I understand that failure to do so may result in disciplinary action up to and including dismissal from the Program. If dismissed, I understand that (a) the cost of returning home is my own expense, and (b) I will not receive a refund of any kind. I understand that my participation may be terminated if I am expelled from school, deemed academically ineligible by the school, or otherwise disciplined by school or civil authorities, or if CEA, in its sole discretion, determines that my conduct is incompatible with the safety or welfare of other participants and/or myself, or, in any way undermines the Program. I agree to indemnify CEA if I do anything that causes CEA to sustain financial loss or liability. 9. I understand that CEA requires all participants to enroll in the CEA insurance plan. I understand it provides insurance coverage for my benefit while in the Program, including health, accident and accidental death insurance. I acknowledge that it is my responsibility to understand the limitations of this coverage and agree that CEA is not responsible for any uninsured losses. 10. I understand that CEA reserves the absolute right to reject my application or dismiss me from a Program if, after acceptance, CEA learns of a condition (personal, medical, academic and/ or psychological) which in the reasonable opinion of CEA may endanger me or others, and/or puts me at risk in a foreign country, and/or shows a history of an inability to adapt to challenging situations, and/or creates or requires burdens and resources not required or necessary to maintain other students. 11. I understand that CEA occasionally uses statements made by its students and/or their photographs in marketing materials on the web and in print. I consent to such use of my statements or photographs of me. I agree that CEA may add my name and email address to an email distribution list which will be shared by other participants on my Program, unless I notify CEA in writing otherwise. 12. I authorize CEA to release my Application and supporting documentation to my host institution(s), my home institution(s), their personnel and CEA Staff. 13. I understand that CEA or the sponsoring academic institution reserves the right to make changes, cancellations or substitutions to the Program for insufficient enrollment, emergency or changed conditions or based upon the interest of the group. I understand that any expenses incurred due to these changes, cancellations or substitutions are at my expense. If I choose to leave the Program as a result of these changes, I understand there will be no refund of program fees or of any expenses already paid. 14. I understand that obtaining a passport and any other required travel documents is my sole responsibility. Whether I am a U.S. citizen or not, I shall hold CEA harmless in the event I cannot or choose not to obtain the necessary documents for participation in the Program. I understand hat the inability to obtain these visas and other documents does not constitute grounds for a refund or waiving any program fees. 15. Any action or suit brought relating to this Application or my participation in a Program must be commenced and maintained in the appropriate state court of Arizona, located in Phoenix, Arizona or a Federal district court located in Phoenix, Arizona as applicable. The parties irrevocably consent to jurisdiction and venue in such courts for such purposes and agree not to seek transfer or removal of any action commenced in any such court, and agree that Arizona law applies irrespective of any conflict of laws analysis. In the event either party hereto institutes an action or other proceedings to enforce any rights arising under this Application, the party prevailing in such action or other proceeding will be paid all reasonable costs and attorney’s fees by the other party. Such fees to be set by the court and not by a jury and to be included in any judgment or award entered in such proceeding. 16. References in this agreement to “Applicant”, or “I”, shall include the Applicant, any legal guardian or parent of the Applicant, and the Applicant’s spouse and heirs. References in this Agreement to “CEA” shall include Cultural Experiences Abroad, Inc., and its subsidiaries, and all of its officers, directors, employees, agents, interns, representatives, group leaders and host school officials.

I (or if I am a minor, my undersigned parent or legal guardian) certify that all of the information I have provided on this Application is true and accurate to the best of my knowledge and I agree to inform CEA as soon as I learn of any error or change to this information. I understand that any misrepresentation, irrespective of whether innocent or intentional, may result in rejection of my application and dismissal from the CEA Program, irrespective of whether the Program commenced or not. I agree with the above Agreement and Release, including but not limited to paragraph 6 above. I acknowledge that the terms and conditions outlined in CEA’s Policies constitute part of my agreement with CEA including but not limited to sections concerning program costs, payment obligations, program changes, housing, and student code of conduct. I have read and agree to CEA's Policies and program information. This agreement will be effective as of the date stated below and shall be governed by the laws of the State of Arizona.
