The Gathering Edinburgh, Scotland, July 25 & 26, 2009 From President, Jim Douglas Jacobs Two years ago, when the Douglas Board appointed me to be in charge of coordinating and representing the Clan Douglas Society of North America in Scotland, as well as taking part in The Gathering 2009, little did I know that it would be one of the highlights of my life. It was such an honor to represent Clan Douglas and to return to Scotland for the first time since the Douglas 2002 tour with T George & Pat Douglas and 35 others. We touched down in Edinburgh at 10:40 AM Scotland time on July 19th. It was an easy trip from Houston to Newark and then on to Edinburgh. We (my wife, Sharon, and I), along with Texas Clan Douglas regents Phil and Loretta Morton, hailed a taxi and rode to our apartment that we rented for a week. The apartment was located in an old city office building next to the present parliament buildings, 300 meters from Edinburgh Castle. We asked our taxi driver if he could tell that we were Americans, and he replied, “Yes, too much luggage.” The heavy load was fine until we had to maneuver our luggage and ourselves up three flights of stairs. The accommodations were great, and the location and the view were fabulous. We were so excited to be there that we placed our luggage inside and immediately went back down the stairs to start sight seeing. The beautiful capital city of Edinburgh has a wealth of things to see and do. The Royal Mile, which never fails to fascinate, consists of a series of four streets and is Edinburgh’s greatest concentration of historical interest. It runs down the rocky ridge of land from the Edinburgh Castle to the Palace of Holyrood. One of the highlights was St. Giles Cathedral. The Gothic cathedral has many monuments, and its vast history is too numerous for this writing. Edinburgh Castle has provided Edinburgh with a superb fortress throughout the ages. It is the most visited Scottish tourist site, and we would not have missed seeing it again. The Esplanade outside the entrance is the setting for the Edinburgh Continued on page 6

Military Tattoo that takes place yearly in August. We took the train to Stirling where we toured Stirling Castle and Bannockburn Heritage Center, which included the famous battlefield site and the life-size statues of William Wallace and Robert the Bruce. Another day, Phil Morton rented a car and drove us to Douglas, Scotland where we visited St. Brides Kirk and the Douglas Muesum. Next, Phil drove on to Karmarnock to visit some of his cousins, the Mortons, who live in Scotland. One morning, we took a taxi to the top of Calton Hill to view the scene and take pictures. The view of Edinburgh from this point was breathtakingly spectacular. We also visited the unique Rosslyn Chapel, with its elaborate stone carvings, which is something I had wanted to do for a long time. However, our main reason for being in Edinburgh was The Gathering held in the year of The Homecoming 2009. It was truly a celebration of Scotland culture and heritage, as well as the largest international gathering of Clans. To be among the 47,000+ people who attended the Gathering from all over the world and who share a connection with Scotland was testament to the real connection of the way those of Scottish descent feel toward each other. The people and the connection we felt reminded us of how fortunate we are to be a part of such a distinctive culture with such deep traditions. The Gathering took place in Holyrood Park, located next to Holyrood Palace, at the base of Arthur’s Seat, the highest point in the city. The Clan Village was at the very heart of The Gathering with 124 clans represented. There was also a vast range of activities. Many great athletes and competitors from Scotland and nearly every continent participated in the highland games which consisted of the traditional caber toss, throwing the hammer, throwing the weight, a race around Arthurs seat, and other strongman events. Many still consider the highland athletics to be what the games are all about. There were also other forms of culture pursuits such as music, over 400 highland dancers, bagpipe competitions, genealogy, history, and storytelling. The bagpipers were top-notch and their performances kept everyone entertained. There were performances by eight of the world’s best solo pipers. There was also a “Kids Zone” storytelling center, plus other events to keep children happy and entertained. The emphasis was on folk tales from around the world but especially Scotland’s history and traditional folk tales and songs. Linda Strachan, the children’s writer behind the Hamish McHaggis books, was also present to delight the children once again with “Hamish” tales. The music main stage also kept guests entertained. The performers included, The Red Hot Chilli Pipers, Dougie MacLean and Capercaillie, Julie Fowlis, The Battlefield Band, and the Lothian Gaelic Choir performing from gate opening until closing both days. The “Flavors of Scotland” area was a high draw with its main focus on local and regional food and drink. From fresh fish, scrumptious berries, wild venison, home baked shortbread, and Scottish cheer for the thirsty, there was something for everyone. Of course, there was also the 100% Aberdeen Angus beef burgers, black pudding, bacon and sausages, as well. One could also partake in the traditional Scottish haggis and stovies. I had one of the best burgers I have ever eaten, and it was made of venison! A surprising highlight for me, personally, was the meeting of the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay (Prince Charles and Camilla) on Saturday morning. They wanted to meet the chiefs, heads of, or clan representatives. I was proud to represent Douglas and proud of our Douglas modern tartan as Camilla 6

Can Douglas Tour Scotland July 21 – 24, 2009
The combination of Scottish Ancestral Trail and Jim Fleming as a guide cannot be beat! Lesley and Peter Gray’s professionalism and personal involvement plus Jim’s deep knowledge of Douglas and Scottish History as curator of the Douglas Museum, made for a memorable, entertaining, and enlightening experience for all. It was delightful meeting and being with Jim’s charming wife, Jeanette, who accompanied us on the entire tour. Besides my wife Janet and I, those taking the tour were Greg Christensen and his mother, Marilyn, Mike and Laura Goodrich, and sisters, Judi Marks and Karen Wojcik. I don’t want to forget our driver, Kenny, who did a super job of getting us around in a 16 passenger coach and was masterful at packing away our considerable luggage every day. Our first stop was Stirling Castle and all the history surrounding it (within the castle, not too great Dave & Janet Douglass, Judi Marks, Karen Wojcik, Greg Christensen Marilyn for the Douglases.) On to Christensen, Mike & Laura Goodrich, Jim Bannockburn where Robert the & Jeanette Fleming Bruce won the decisive battle against the English with the Good Sir James at his side. Sited on the bluffs above the River Clyde, Bothwell Castle was a major Douglas Stronghold in a beautiful setting. It was a short hop from Bothwell to the Village of Douglas. Jim provided a running Jim telling us about the Great commentary at the Douglas Museum as Hall at Stirling well as serving as shopkeeper whilst we purchased memorabilia at the museum store. We also spent a good deal of time next door at St. Bride’s, “Mausoleum of the Black Douglases.” We spent the first night at the New Lanark Mill Hotel, part of a World Heritage site. The second day involved an opulent private residence castle, a strikingly beautiful castle ruins, and an American hero. Drumlanrig Castle, for centuries a major Douglas stronghold and now home to the Duke of Buccleach, was a delight. It is a magnificent home full of treasures and with wonderful formal gardens in an exquisite natural setting. But Threave Castle, built by “Archibald the Grim,” was a starkly impressive ruins. With the approach path through farmlands, a boat ride across the River Dee to the island, and the massive block of the castle, it was an unforgettable experience. We then visited the birthplace cottage of our revolutionary war naval hero John Paul Jones, where we learned more about his life than we really wanted to know. Bothwell Castle

Our overnight was at Cavens Country House Hotel near Kirkbean. It was a lovely 7

country estate, surrounded by gardens and fields full of sheep. The food was superb – all locally grown produce, including the beef. The rooms were large and well furnished. A great getaway place! We traveled from the delightful setting at Cavens to the charming village of New Abbey, where we went through a water powered, late 18th century corn mill – had nothing to do with the Douglases – but a very interesting place and a docent who missed his calling as a standup comedian. The main feature of the village is Sweetheart Abbey, but it was closed due to restoration work. We still got a look at it and Sweetheart Abbey learned that it didn’t meet the same fate as some of the abbeys at the hands of the English because it came under the protection of our Archibald the Grim. Then on we went through the hauntingly beautiful “Lands of Douglas,” past St. Mary’s Loch, and along the Douglas Burn – an area that contains the ruins of a number of Douglas “keeps.” We concluded the day’s tour at Melrose Abbey with the burial place of King Robert the Bruce’s heart. It was a lovely ruin with a little challenge – finding the piping pig – which Janet and I did – with some difficulty. Oh, and we did manage to stop and tour the Glenkinchie Distillery and get a wee taste of the “water of life.” We stayed at the Maitlandfield Hotel in East Lothian, handy for our outing to Tantallon in the morning. What can we say about Tantallon? Awe-inspiring, of course, beautiful setting, the awesome Melrose Abbey curtain wall still standing. But the history is even more powerful. William, the 1st earl of Douglas, built the castle around 1350 after gaining control of his father’s lands and those of his uncle, the Good Sir James. It then came into the hands of the Douglas earls of Angus, the “Red” Douglases. The castle was besieged by Scottish and English kings, with the massive curtain wall withstanding it all. We then toured Dirleton Castle (no Douglas history) and its extensive and beautiful gardens. We stopped at the Museum of Flight for lunch and some went through the exhibits. We had a stop at the old church of Athelstaneford, where the Saltire, Scotland’s flag, was first inspired.

Across the Firth of Forth we go, into the Kingdom of Fife, to see Aberdour Castle once held by Dirleton Castle Gardens the Douglas earls of Morton. Next door was the delightful, small St. Fillans Church, with parts of the structure dating back to the 12th century. It is still an active church with regular services – we met a member of the congregation who filled us in on some of the history. From here we headed back across the Forth to Edinburgh where we 8

commented to me that she thought my attire looked very nice. I was delighted to tell her about my writing in our Douglas newsletter that described how all the pictures or paintings of Scotland do not do the country justice; it must be viewed personally. However, the most beautiful thing about Scotland was the people themselves. She said that she agreed. They are gracious, friendly and “real” people. We were overwhelmed by the amount of visitors at the Douglas Clan tent. As soon as the gates opened on Saturday, those interested in Scotland or the Douglas Scottish descent, started arriving to meet us and talk about Scotland and their heritage. Our first visitors were Sarah and Mark Douglas, a brother and sister from Kuranda, Queensland, who were touring Europe for 3 months and did not want to miss The Gathering. There were visitors from Australia, Belgium, Canada, England, Ireland, Mexico, New Zealand, Scotland, South Africa, Switzerland and the USA. A total of 150+ persons signed our register, with 70 of them from Scotland. The first day, someone was signing the guest register every 4½ minutes. One person signed our register and wrote that he had no affiliation with Douglas, but it was his favorite tartan. Quite a few could tell us all about their Douglas heritage but had some ancestral questions that William Douglas, Edinburgh, of the Douglas Archives was very capable of answering. The Douglas Archives is a mix of historical records and biographies. Also, Dr. Deborah Foukes, author of three historical fiction books about the Douglases was at the Douglas tent on Saturday to help answer questions or visit with guests regarding Douglas history. The crowning event was the Parade of Clans. We were placed in alphabetical order, by clans, outside the Holyrood Palace adjacent to the Royal Mile. The Douglas parade participants, some 60+ persons, were placed behind The Caledonian Brewery Pipe Band. Steve Brownlee, life Clan Douglas member from Louisiana, played his bagpipes behind the Douglases. As we entered the Royal mile and started our march to Edinburgh Castle, I 9

TRIP TO SCOTLAND (July 21 - Aug 1)
August 2009 An open letter to family & friends, Ever since I discovered my ancestry was Scottish (1990) from a cousin who had done some family research and found our connection was to Clan Douglas, I have been wanting to visit Scotland. Hearing from several sources over the years how beautiful Scotland was and getting involved in Scottish & clan societies made it seem like a far away, romantic, almost magical place. Seeing Scotland for myself recently - all they said was true!! How thrilling to participate in making history at "The Gathering 2009" in Edinburgh, meeting people from all around the world, meeting people with Douglas connections from Canada, Australia, and parts of the US I had never met before all claiming Douglas/Scottish ancestry was absolutely awesome. Taking part in the historical clan parade up the Royal Mile to Edinburgh Castle with onlookers cheering and waving was inspirational and moving. It was exciting to visit the site of Douglas ancestors at Threave Castle on the River Dee. Glasgow & Edinburgh - hustle & bustle of big cities with old world feel. Most buildings were of sandstone and streets were cobblestone in older areas. Double decker buses by the dozens.

Countryside - The country as a whole (or at least the part we saw) was neat as a pin - no trash or litter, no abandoned, dilapidated buildings. Picturesque, quaint villages & farms looked like pictures from storybooks. Window boxes full of flowers & hanging baskets in the small towns we passed or made stops in. And sheep sheep sheep everywhere! The population of Scotland is around 5 million whereas they claim 20 million sheep! I believe we saw at least a million of them especially in Ayrshire. Some were even grazing within a few feet of the highway! Beautiful, pastoral settings grandiose highland mountains. Storybook castles & ruins. Charming, charming, charming. Weather - very changeable. Had to wear sweater/jacket even in height of summer. Lots of mist/rain. Food - fish & chips, haggis, neeps & tatties on every menu. Our breakfast each morning was provided at the hotel we slept in. The group at Dunkeld Kippers, blood pudding, beans were offered on several buffets. Pots of tea were common as well as porridge, fruit, yogurt (sometimes rhubarb yogurt). The only "fast food" places we saw were Mc Donald's. I believe the locals want to avoid commercialism & keep it simple, true to historical look & feel, and promote local food vendors. People - for the most part the people were warm, friendly and helpful. Sometimes hard to understand their thick Scottish brogue. Our drivers (Rabbie's Trail Burners) were very knowledgeable and often took us to out of the way places of interest that weren't on our itinerary. They were Duncan Mc Nabb and Eric Nichol. Eric even sang Scottish ballads to us as we traveled along. If at all possible you should plan to visit Scotland. I believe I could live there. We were all sad to leave. Judy Deitz, former Regent (N. Alabama) Additional comment by Penny Jones: In conjunction with the Clan Gathering in Edinburgh in July, Don and Judy Deitz and Laurie Azumi of AL, Penny Jones and Stan McKinney of SC, and Betty McKee of LA, enjoyed a 10-day tour of Scotland July 22-August 1 which included Glasgow, Ayr, Douglas, Edinburgh, Arrachar, Fort William, Loch Lomand, Loch Ness, Culloden Battlefield, Inverness, Pitlochry, and Dunkeld. Penny tried Haggis, Neeps and Tatties in six different towns and found the best in Glasgow and a close second best in a tea room in Edinburgh. The taste and presentation varied in each place and was a very delightful experience. Our entire tour of Scotland was wonderful and we are looking forward to returning one day. 10

could hear “Douglas, Douglas” repeatedly being called out by the people watching along the parade. As we progressed forward, we yelled the Douglas war cry, “A Douglas, A Douglas.” The crowd cheered loudly as cameras continually snapped pictures. When we slowed down or stopped, some would come out of the sideline to have their photograph made with Dr. Murray Frick, who carried a beautifully embroidered Douglas crest on a Douglas tartan banner. Many shook hands with us as we passed. It was breathtaking, emotional, and very hard to put into words. It was an experience that I will never forget, and one that I will treasure the rest of my life. It was truly an honor to represent you in Scotland at “The Gathering” and in the parade. It was everything I expected and so very much more. IN NUMBERS: 47,000 persons came through the gates with at least 150+ persons signing in at our register at the Douglas tent. 20,000 estimated lined the Royal Mile to watch the Parade of Clans. 124 clans and societies were represented at The Gathering. 200 performers took part in “Aisling’s Children; Tales of the Homecoming,” the pageant staged on the Esplanade outside Edinburgh Castle. The performance took place after the march. 400 participants competed in the official Highland Dancing competition. I would like to give special thanks to Phil and Loretta Morton for all the things they did to help, and Mark and Cora Peterson for their help in meeting and greeting at the Douglas tent. Thank you also to Tim Tyler and Janet and David Douglass our newspaper editor. Dr. Murray Frick provided the four Douglas tartans for our tent as well as the beautiful embroidered winged heart crest on the Douglas modern tartan banner that he graciously carried in the Clan parade. Thanks also to Steward Douglas, Lord Aberdour, who also helped greet visitors to the tent. Thanks to Mark Peterson for bringing a clan banner with our sept names and his banner with “Douglas” on it that he and Cora carried in the Clan parade. A picture of them carrying it made it into a Scotland newspaper. Tim Tyler also brought a special banner that he and his wife, Mary, carried in the Clan parade. Thanks to Jim Fleming, curator of the Douglas Museum, and his wife for helping meet guests and talk to some about Douglas and the museum. Thanks to William Douglas of the Douglas Archives for spending time with visitors and helping with the Douglas Clan tent. We appreciate so much all of your efforts to help make this event so very successful. Last, but not least, I would like to add a special thanks from Clan Douglas to Lord Jamie Semphill for planning, organizing, and directing The Gathering. We could not have done it without all of you. In fact, I am much more interested in my ancestry after The Gathering. I am so fortunate that my great grandmother Sara, was a Douglas. Kristie and I visited quite a few clan tents (she has quite a few ancestors from other clans), and none of them could compare to the warmth and acceptance we found in the Douglas tent! CLAN DOUGLAS AT BLAIRSVILLE, GEORGIA GAMES June 13 and 14, 2009 The June heat in the North Georgia Mountains was kept at bay in the Douglas tent as we settled easily beside the babbling creek and in the shade of the many trees. The games were once again well attended by visitors and many clans.

Tim and Missy Justice joined Regent Don Brown on Saturday for the Don Brown and Tim Justice Parade of Clans and kept the tent busy by stamping the passports of the children, handing out candy, and providing information on Clan Douglas to the many who stopped by.
Old World Renaissance Faire Duluth, MN
On June 13 - 14, 2009, the Old World Renaissance Faire was held on a farm field just north of Duluth, MN. Clan Douglas was one of three in Clan Row. We, along with the Stewarts and the Donalds, participated. It was a great, fun, renaissance event. There, Michaelle Douglas joined the clan this weekend. Shaun Hengel and Sharon Gustafson, who attended, were to be married in July.
We were happy to receive 5 new members to the Clan during the games. Those joining were Mrs. Joan Visitor in latest Scottish Attire Kirkland Maynard Morris of Atlanta, Georgia who signed as a Life Member and was accompanied by husband George, a Gordon; Mrs. Gwen Hall (Douglas) of St. Petersburg, Florida; Mr. Gordon Gowder (Ingliss) of Dallas, Georgia who was accompanied by his wife Debbie and daughter Mariel; Mr. Ken Morton of Ooltewah, Tennessee and his wife Cynthia; and Mr. Douglas Williams (Douglas) of Douglasville, Georgia with his friend Cynthia, a Hamilton.

OHIO REGENT REPORT 2009
BY: STEPHEN & ANGELA DOUGLAS Our first game to report on is “A Celtic Gathering” in Lancaster, Ohio held in May. This was our first year being invited to this event that was partially hosted by Paul Irwin of Clan Irwin. It was held at the fairgrounds in Lancaster and it is their 2nd year for this event. It mostly was a Celtic event, but there were 6 other clans there including us. In addition, it was a very family event, even a few pooches showed! The event was held inside as there was such a high chance of rain, but the rain held off ‘til later and did not ruin the day, that’s for sure! We stayed quite

We would like to welcome our new members Pam Douglas Brust of Belpre, Ohio and Roxanna Lehman who has a family history of Foster and Forrester of Logan, Ohio. Her son has been piping since he was 10 years old and still enjoys it today. We look forward to next year!

The second game to report on was the Ohio Scottish Games in Wellington, Ohio, held the last weekend in June. To sum the games up was “fantastic!” The weather was great. They had us situated in the barn again this year, due to problems in previous years with the weather. We had around 20 people that marched with us in the “clan march” and stayed very busy! We had some folks stop by that we haven’t seen in a number of years, which was great, and some that were looking for information on their history. And, we always have the dieCharles and Joyce Douglas hards that come every year, and we are so thankful for your support!! We would like to welcome our newest members, Charles and Joyce Douglas of The Plains, Ohio, and Robert and Randine Weaver of Youngstown, Ohio who have Douglas history in their family. This game was the first time we would launch the new Douglas Castle faรงade, having replaced the former poles that held up the flags over the top of the tent. It looked fantastic! Many thanks to my partner, Kel, whose stagecraft The Douglas Castle Faรงade background made this fete possible. The castle drew many complimentary comments especially from other clans. Children loved the castle and brought their parents to see it. We even included a current photo of Douglas Castle within one of the tower windows which several passersby stopped to read. If you're a fan of the TV show Judge Judy, you may recall our appearance on the show in Nov. of 2008 in which we were in a tug-o-war over the ownership of the tent poles. The poles, long-gone, have now been replaced by the handsome castle, bigger, better than ever! We are so proud! Next year we hope to add some kind of William Wallace (Braveheart) feature to further attract people to our tent, impressing upon them the part that the Leslie and Kel working Douglases the Douglas Tent played in the historical events surrounding Wallace.
Great weather and temperatures in the high 80s; good traffic and got to see several old friends. We sold three memberships before noon; a record! I couldn't have done it without the coaching of the new Clan Douglas Western VP, Diana Kay Stell. She offered great advice and mentorship that I sincerely appreciated getting. Edinboro Highland Games July 25, 2009 For the last two years, Andy Pierce, John Douglas and Roger Pierce have voluntarily set up and manned a Douglas Tent at the games in Edinboro, PA. This year, the date was moved from late May to July 25th in hopes of friendlier weather. So, Harriet and I drove up to see everyone and to see if the fairer weather drew bigger crowds. The day started out nicely till the rain and then winds changed things for awhile, but what can you do when you’re just 20 miles away from Lake Erie. It makes for more resilient folks!!

Dear Clansmen and Ladies: The time has come for me to say good-bye and join the ranks of the “Old Guard”. As I approach my 90th. birthday, I took the option given to me by the Executive to pick my successor as Ass’t VP and Regent in Canada for the Clan Douglas Society. I was fortunate in this instance, to have Mr. Kenneth Simmons of Milton Ontario, step forward and accept the position. Ken has been a member of the Society since 2001, and was acting as Provincial Regent for Ontario. He is well versed in Genealogy, has been to Scotland recently, and can discuss the Historical aspects of the Douglas people and the Sept families associated with them. Ken will look after the collection of Canadian dues and your questions concerning membership and other matters related to CDSNA. I respectfully request that you give our new Regent the same co-operation you afforded me over the years. The Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held during the month of July, and it is expected that we will have a new President and a Secretary coming out of that event. I urge you all to keep your interest in the Society ans promote it whenever possible to your friends and associates, and hope that it provides the same satisfaction to you as it has given me for the last 30 years! CLAN DOUGLAS SOCIETY OF NORTH AMERICA, LTD. SCHOLARSHIP ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA 1. Each fiscal year Clan Douglas Society of North America, Ltd. (Clan Douglas) will award up to $1000.00 in scholarships provided no individual will receive a scholarship in excess of $250.00. 2. Applicants must be dedicated to continuing their instruction and furthering their education in the field of Scottish arts, which includes piping, drumming, dancing, Scottish related languages or general Scottish studies. 3. To be eligible, an applicant must have been an active member in Clan Douglas for a minimum of one year or a direct descendant of such an active member. Active membership will be certified by the Secretary and determined as of April 30th following receipt of application for scholarship. Members of the scholarship committee and their descendants are not eligible. 4. Applications must be post marked by May 1st. 5. Applications will be reviewed by the Scholarship Committee, which will make recommendations to the Board of Directors for approval. Recipients will be announced at the Annual General Meeting of Clan Douglas. 6. 路 路 路
