ACLA Celebrates 30 Years and Launches New Website
Wednesday Today we visited the Mont Bar volcano. It is a Strombolian type volcano. As we climbed up we looked for “bombs”, these are crystals about the size and shape of a fruit stone, they are denser than lava and don’t have holes. We walked to the crater of the volcano where there was a peat bog (a sort of marsh).

Learning the strokes
We came down from the volcano in time for lunch. In the afternoon, we went to the other side of the volcano to look for bombs and black minerals (augites) in the Mont Bar quarry. It was a great day, and now we’re off for our bedtime stories!!!
Thursday Before leaving for the activities, we remixed a song : « Last chance ». We sang it to the teachers. Today we went mountain biking and canoeing. In canoeing we shot a rapid, it was fantastic!! It was easy!! We mountain biked along the banks of the Loire. We pedalled on grass, sand, tarmac, dirt and gravel. For lunch we ate fries, minced meat and ice cream for dessert. Afterwards we cleared everything away just like grown ups. In the afternoon we did the activitiy we didn’t do in the morning; mountain

biking and canoeing – it was just great! It’s not only sport that’s important, there are games too!! There are tin soldiers and board games of course!! This is how we finished the day, tired, but happy!
Friday Today is our last day in Retournac. Firstly we tidied our rooms and packed our bags ready for departure in the evening. Next, we took the train to Puy en Velay. Upon arriving at the station in Puy we found two guides who took us on a tour of the town. We even visited a lace maker. The tour finished with a much awaited visit to the cathedral. Afterwards, we went to the town park to eat our picnic, before some time to shop for souvenirs! We rushed off to attack the shops!!! Before we knew it the trip was over and it was time to return to the centre to collect our bags and return to Versoix. Continued on Page 3...

As we go on we remember...
Retour sur l’année 2007/2008... By Thomas Rankin Student Council President The 2007-2008 scholastic year has come to an end and all far too soon. From the moment we enter high school we await the end. Students work day in and day out towards one final goal, achieving their diploma. It is amazing that everyone is anticipating the end, and yet just before it arrives we try to seize the moment, and postpone moving on! I had this thought myself, at the beginning of the year. I wanted to make my final year at Collège Du Léman a memorable one, and I feel that the graduating class and the school as a whole has a lot to look back on this year, both happy and sad. A new era was set at the beginning of the year, with the implementation of the Student Government and the changing of its infrastructure. This system worked well in its first year and with time, talent and dedication, our students can further improve it and turn L’année scolaire 2007/2008 s’est écoulée beaucoup trop vite! Cette constatation est assez contradictoire car, dès leur entrée au High School, tous les élèves attendent avec impatience la fin de leur scolarité et focalisent sur l’obtention de leur diplôme final. Pourtant, plus la fin approche, plus ils aimeraient suspendre le temps. En début d’année, je m’étais fixé comme objectif de faire de ma dernière année au Collège du Léman une année mémorable. Aujourd’hui, je peux dire que cette année scolaire, pour nous, élèves de dernière année, comme pour tous les élèves de l’école, a été jalonnée d’évènements positifs et négatifs. Le début de l’année scolaire a été marqué par la création de l’association des étudiants. Une année déjà que cette nouvelle infrastructure est en place et je suis certaine qu’avec du temps et du travail, nos successeurs pourront encore l’améliorer et en faire quelque chose de formidable.

Vladimir Nefedov was an intelligent, kind and loveable person who unfortunately passed away earlier this year. During these times students came together not only to be by each others side, but to rightfully pay respect to the life of Vladimir. Today we can all pay respect to Vladimir by visiting the school memorial that is on campus and continuing the efforts to raise funds, in his name, for the charity Water Aid. At the end of it all we can all be happy, with the largest number of graduates this year we mark a milestone, Collège Du Léman is growing even more and with that opportunities open up. As we, the graduates of Collège Du Léman enter into the summer, diplomas in hand, we enter the unknown, but one thing is certain, as we go on, we will always remember our days at Collège Du Léman. Cette année a aussi démontré que les élèves du Collège du Léman savent être solidaires dans les moments heureux, mais également dans les moments malheureux. Avec la disparition brutale de Valdimir Nefedov en début d’année, nous avons tous perdu un ami. Nous nous sommes tous serrés les coudes, non seulement pour nous soutenir mutuellement, mais surtout pour rendre à Vladimir, un hommage bien mérité. Aujourd’hui, un mémorial a été mis en place sur le campus de l’école, en souvenir du garçon gentil et intelligent qu’était Vladimir. Du côté des évènements réjouissants, on note la croissance du Collège du Léman. Cette année, le nombre de “graduating students” a été le plus élevé jamais enregistré dans l’histoire de l’école. Diplômes en poche, nous allons vers l’inconnu. Une seule certitude: jamais nous n’oublierons les moments passés au Collège du Léman!
CDL 2008 Business Week Raises CHF 7058 for WaterAid Récolte d’un montant de CHF 7058 pour l’organisation WaterAid By Janet Barrow Business Studies Teacher Congratulations to CDL’s budding business magnates from IGCSE 1, Pre-IB, Grade 11 and Grade 12 who, with much enthusiasm, hard work and varying degrees of success, launched their fledgling businesses during the week of 26th May. The project, started in class over a period of several weeks, encompassed full business planning, market research and analysis, sourcing investigation, financial forecasting, advertising and plan-variance analysis. Joint winners of the title ‘CDL Business Team of the Year’ were i-Smell, who sold perfumes, and Gex and Co., a sushi and drinks stall. The CHF 7058 proceeds of the annual competition will be donated to the Vladimir Nefedov Water Fund, in memory of a former student who tragically died this year, and hence to WaterAid, a charity which helps the world’s poorest perople to gain access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene education.

L’après-midi, nous sommes allés de l’autre côté du volcan pour chercher des bombes et des minéraux noirs (augites) dans la carrière du Mont Bar. C’était une superbe journée, et maintenant nous partons pour la veillée contes !!!

Mercredi : Aujourd’hui, nous sommes allés visiter le volcan du Mont Bar. C’est un volcan de type Strombolien. Pendant la montée, nous avons cherché des bombes, ce sont des cristaux en forme de noyau (de mini madeleines), ils sont plus lourds que les scories de laves et n’ont pas de trous. Nous avons marché jusqu’au cratère du volcan, et nous avons fait le tour du cratère

Jeudi: Avant de partir pour les activités, nous avons remixé une chanson : « Dernière chance ». Nous l’avons chantée aux maîtresses. Ce matin, nous avons fait du VTT et du canoë. Au canoë, nous avons descendu une cascade, c’était super bien !!! C’était facile !! Nous avons fait du VTT sur les bords de la Loire. Nous sommes allés pédaler sur l’herbe, le sable, le goudron, la terre et les cailloux. A midi, nous avons mangé des frites, du steak haché et de la glace en dessert. Nous avons tout débarrassé comme des grands !!! Cet après-midi, nous nous sommes bien amusés. Nous avons fait du VTT et du canoë.

La preuve : Et le VTT, on l’oublie ? Mais NON ! Il n’y a pas que le sport qui compte, les jeux aussi !!!!! Il y a les soldats de plomb et les jeux de société bien sûr !!! La journée s’est finie ainsi, nous sommes fatigués mais heureux. Vendredi :Aujourd’hui, c’est le dernier jour à Retournac. Il faut d’abord ranger nos chambres et préparer les valises pour le départ de ce soir. Ensuite, en route pour la gare de Retournac. Nous avons pris le train pour le Puy en Velay. Arrivés à la gare du Puy, nous avons retrouvé deux guides avec qui nous avons visité la ville. Nous avons même vu une dentellière. Nous avons terminé la visite par la cathédrale tant attendue. Ensuite, nous sommes partis au parc de la ville pour le pique-nique, avant de partir à la chasse aux souvenirs. En route, à l’assaut des magasins !!! Voilà, il faut retourner au centre pour récupérer nos bagages pour revenir à Versoix.

Association of Collège du Léman Alumni (ACLA) celebrates 30 years and launches new website L’Association des Anciens Elèves du Collège du Léman (ACLA) célèbre ses 30 ans et vous propose un nouveau site internet By Alexis Boyer-Meyerman ACLA Coordinator, Class of 2003 The Association of Collège du Léman Alumni was created on the occasion of Mr. Pierre Olivier’s 80th birthday on April 24th, 1978. Mr. Olivier was an outstanding and Mr Olivier beloved veteran teacher who joined the teaching staff in the first year of CDL’s existence and was a major player in its development throughout the following decades.
M. Olivier believed that CDL was much more than just a school, as its mission was also to provide a loving home-away-from-home and second family to its students and staff, many of whom came from faraway countries. This tradition is profoundly rooted in the school’s staff and lives on in the hearts of its alumni association. As part of its anniversary celebration, ACLA is proud to present a new website and a renewed commitment to bringing together the CDL family. La Rentrée By Maya Grodman IB student and High School President The newly elected student government executive committee of the 2008-2009 school year invites all students, teachers and staff members of CDL to a back-toschool party on the first day of school, Monday, August 25 at the Concha, starting at 12:00pm. There will be lots of food for sale, as well as raffle tickets for fabulous prizes, brand new T-shirts unique to each grade, and much more, so don’t forget to bring money on the first day of school.

A youngster floats motionless, face down in a swimming pool. At dinner, someone chokes on food, unable to breathe. These things happen every day, but would you know how to help?

There will also be special performances and lots of exciting surprises. On Monday, May 19th, and Tuesday, May 20th, Maria Zenzola, Rafael Cabrera, Cihan Yalgin Cazgir, and Tural Mammadov became the first four CDL students to participate in an Emergency First Response Course hosted at College Du Leman. Students learned everything from CPR, to treating serious injuries,and even how to use a defibrillator! They learned to apply

Dans une salle de sport, un homme âgé s’effondre suite à une crise cardiaque. Lors d’un tournoi sportif, un garçon perd connaissance. Deux voitures entrent en collision, les occupants sont gravement blessés. Un enfant flotte, inanimé, dans une piscine. Au cours d’un dîner, une personne s’étouffe en mangeant. Il s’agit de situations qui se produisent quotidiennement. Issue fatale ou non? Même si tout ne dépend pas de nous, savoir effectuer les bons gestes peut très souvent permettre de sauver des vies. Maria Zenzola, Rafael Cabrera, Cihan Yalgin Cazgir, et Tural Mammadov ont été les premiers élèves du CDL à participer, les 19 et 20 mai derniers, à un cours de premiers

The intensive course taught exactly what to do and how to help in case of any emergency. Congratulations to these students for becoming Emergency Responders! Everyone and anyone can take this course, and is encouraged to do so. You never know when an emergency will take place, but by becoming an Emergency Responder, you could save lives!

Un examen écrit ainsi que des mises en situation où les formateurs simulent des accidents, ont permis de tester les connaissances des élèves. Toutes nos félicitations aux élèves ayant participé à cette formation! Nous vous encourageons tous à faire comme eux! Quand l’accident survient, en attendant l’arrivée des secours, des réflexes simples et des gestes vitaux peuvent faire la différence !

A Week In Leysins Une semaine à Leysins

By Grade 5 and CM2 students. We arrived safely on Monday, with 106 anglophone and francophone pupils from Grade 5m and CM2, our first joint venture. The children started their team building activities immediately upon arrival. It was great to see the two sections working together. On Tuesday, the day of writing this article, three groups went off fearlessly on their Pour la première fois, quelque 106 élèves de section anglophone (Grade 5) et francophone (CM2) sont partis en classe verte ensemble. Ils ont effectué un séjour d’une semaine à Leysin. Le premier jour (lundi), les enseignants ont organisé des activités visant à permettre aux élèves de « briser la glace » et d’apprendre à se connaître. C’était formidable de voir des élèves des deux sections partager ces instants ! Le mardi, trois groupes d’élèves fort courageux sont partis en randonnée. Ils sont rentrés fatigués mais ravis de leur escapade. M. Schranz a supervisé les activités sur le mur d’escalade, concrétisant les explications données en salle de classe auparavant. Les élèves ont incroyablement progressé et développé leur confiance en

hikes, coming back tired, but happy. Mr Schranz assisted greatly at the climbing wall, showing skills yet undiscovered in the classroom. It was wonderful to see children develop and progress in their confidence. There was a lot of co-operation and team building even more in evidence between the two sections. Other groups learned how to construct shelters and to build a fire; they loved eating marshmallow brochettes toasted in the flames! Others still studied the environment at “Village Camps” and learnt about ecosystems and the scientific approach. It was interesting to see them using their knowledge outside the classroom. Others participated in orienteering. At the end of the activities some students were able to go to the shops they were delighted!

The teachers are tired, but happy! eux. Les activités se sont déroulées dans un extraordinaire esprit de camaraderie entre les élèves des deux sections. D’autres groupes ont appris à faire des cabanes et du feu et se sont régalés en mangeant des brochettes de ‘Marshmallow’. D’autres ont étudié l’environnement du ‘village camp’ et ont réfléchi à ce qu’était une démarche scientifique et un écosystème. C’était intéressant de les voir mobiliser leurs connaissances en dehors d’une salle de classe. D’autres ont participé à une course d’orientation. Une fois les activités terminées, certains ont pu faire un peu de shopping pour leur plus grand plaisir ! Les enseignants fatigués mais contents !

ESL Students give top marks to Olympic Museum Trip
La visite du musée Olympique a fait l’unanimité! By Students and staff from the ESL (English as a Second Language) Department

After a breakfast of croissants we followed the English speaking guide who talked us through some of the amazing facts Staff and students from the ESL about the Olympic Games. Idem pour la barre utilisée pour l’épreuve du saut à la perche, qui semble impossible à atteindre, même avec une perche! In April all of the students in ESL visited the Olympic Museum in Ouchy, Lausanne, accompanied by Mrs. Sell, Mrs. Poppleton and Ms. Duchatelle, for a day of sporting fun.
Au mois d’avril, tous les élèves ESL ont eu la chance de visiter le Musée Olympique de Lausanne/Ouchy accompagnés par Mesdames Sell, Poppleton et Duchatelle.

Nous avons ensuite abordé la question du déroulement du relais international de la flamme olympique, qui, cette année, a été fortement perturbé par les opposants. Nous sommes rentrés au CDL chargés de souvenirs achetés à la boutique du musée. Tous les élèves, enthousiasmés par la visite, mais aussi par la magnifique vue sur le lac Léman depuis Ouchy, ont décidé de retourner au Musée Olympique avec leurs parents.
On Wednesday 14th May, a conference on language teaching was organized for parents of students in the primary section. The guest of the conference, led by Alain Delaune and Steve Robbins, was Pamela Walsh, an expert in this field, who has spent many hours in the classroom collecting best practices with the aim of developing curricula and teaching techniques. The event began with a discussion about the definitions of bi-multi-lingualism. This was followed by the unveiling of the results of the parents’ survey conducted in December 2007, as well as ideas for action and reflection in the years to come. Finally, Ms. Walsh dealt with different learning styles, with practical examples. The conference will be held again at the beginning of September 2008.

L’invitée de cette conférence, menée par Alain Delaune et Steve Robbins, était Pamela Walsh, experte dans ce domaine, qui a passé de nombreuses heures dans les classes afin d’y collecter des pratiques (best practice) dans le but de revoir le curriculum et la pédagogie. Une première partie a abordé les définitions du bi-pluri-linguisme, puis les grandes lignes du résultat du sondage auprès des parents réalisé en décembre 2007 ont été dévoilées, ainsi que des pistes d’action et de réflexion pour les années à venir. Enfin, Mme Walsh a traité des différents styles d’apprentissage, avec des exemples pratiques. La conférence sera donnée à nouveau à la rentrée de septembre 2008.

Primary School International Day Attracts Record Numbers Record d’affluence pour la Journée Internationale de l’école Primaire By Alain Delaune Primary School Principal On May 24, 2008, the Parent Student Association of the Primary School celebrated another successful edition of its International Day, a fun filled family day of games and entertainment for all primary school children which was held at the CDL Collex Bossy Garage. After a few drops of rain at the beginning of the afternoon, the sun eventually came out so that all outdoor activities could take place as planned. With a total of 1254 tickets sold, this year’s International Day boosted a record number of visitors! The afternoon was of to a good start with the traditional Parade of Costumes whereby children of over 60 different nationalities, often in traditional costumes, proudly represented their countries in a colorful march over the grounds of Collex Bossy. CDL’s new Director General, Mr. Paloma, introduced by headmaster Mr. Gale, addressed a warm welcome to all children and parents, where after everyone was invited to savior the many different culinary specialties from all corners L’association de parents d’élèves de l’école Primaire (PSA, Parent Student Association) se réjouit du succès rencontré par la Journée Internationale qui s’est déroulée le 24 mai dernier au garage du CDL à Collex-Bossy. Cette année encore, jeux et divertissements étaient au rendez-vous pour les élèves du Primaire et leurs familles. Malgré une météo incertaine, toutes les activités prévues à l’extérieur ont pu se dérouler normalement. L’édition 2008 de la Journée Internationale a enregistré un nombre record de visiteurs avec un total de 1254 billets d’entrée vendus! L’après-midi a débuté avec le traditionnel “défilé de costumes”. Des enfants, de

The afternoon continued with the ID Talent Show, during which over a 120 young artists from within the Flying the flag Primary School enthralled an enthusiastic audience with a sparkling spectacle of song and dance, which provided them with a unique opportunity to be real stars for a day! Other highlights of the day included the numerous fun games and rides, craft activities, three huge bouncy castles and the very successful lucky numbers stand. As is traditional, all proceeds from International Day were donated to a selected charity which this year was again Sok Sabay, a children’s plus de 60 nationalités différentes, ont fièrement représenté leurs pays respectifs, en costumes colorés, bien souvent en costumes traditionnels. Le nouveau Directeur Général du Collège du Léman, Monsieur Paloma, a ensuite été présenté par Monsieur Gale aux élèves et à leurs parents. Tous lui ont réservé un accueil très chaleureux. Au niveau restauration, en plus des deux stands proposant des glaces et des viandes grillées, les visiteurs ont pu déguster de nombreuses spécialités culinaires du monde entier, aimablement préparées par des parents volontaires. L’après-midi s’est poursuivie avec le “ID

L’association de parents d’élèves (PSA) souhaite tout particulièrement remercier les nombreux parents bénévoles qui ont travaillé sans relâche, et ce, durant plusieurs mois à la préparation de la Journée Internationale, ainsi que l’école, qui comme toujours, a généreusement soutenu cette manifestation.

Peter Pan: Grade 8 pay tribute to Mrs Marquis Peter Pan: Les élèves du Grade 8 rendent homage à Mrs Marquis By Ian Menzies Middle School Principal Few teachers have accomplished so much for the Middle School in two years as Mrs Teresa Marquis. Last Mrs/Mme Marquis year Grade 6 were fortunate to have Mrs Marquis as their class teacher. This year she took over our Drama programme, and the grade 8 kids produced a memorable Peter Pan.
There were 85 students in the show, and the excellent Middle School ‘Pan band’ accompanied our budding actors. This was the first show in the Eiger Auditorium with amazing new lighting and sound facilities. The new equipment was being set up during the rehearsals so the audience had a first sense of what it will be like to work in sophisticated theatre installations. The Middle School students and faculty all join together to wish Terry Marquis the very best fortune for her posting in New Delhi.

En deux ans, Mme Teresa Marquis a énormément apporté à la section Middle School. L’an passé, les élèves de Grade 6 ont eu la chance d’avoir Mme Marquis comme professeur principal. Cette année, elle a pris en charge le programme de théâtre et les élèves de grade 8 ont présenté un magnifique spectacle: “Peter Pan”.

85 élèves ont participé au spectacle et l’excellent groupe de musique “Pan band”, composé d’élèves du Middle School, a accompagné nos acteurs en herbe. “Peter Pan” fut le premier spectacle présenté dans l’auditorium Eiger depuis l’installation des nouvelles infrastructures lumineuses et sonores. Le nouvel équipement ultramoderne
a été mis en place lors des répétitions, ce qui a permis aux spectateurs présents de se rendre compte de sa qualité. Les élèves et les professeurs du Middle School adressent à Terry Marquis tous leurs voeux de réussite pour son nouveau poste à New Delhi.

Art Attack!
L’art au Primaire This year the Primary Art Department chose the work of Russian artist Marc Chagall as its main theme. A visit to the Chagall Exhibition at the Fondation Pierre Gianadda in Martigny, exposed the students to his wonderful original work. They were shown first hand how Chagall applied his paint and used various mixed media; as well as his vivid imagination. Following the visit the students completed projects based on Chagall’s work. Many art disciplines were used throughout the grade levels, including, painting, line drawing, printing, collage and sculpture. All these projects were then displayed in the May art exhibition. Using every available wall and floor space throughout the Primary school, over 1000 artworks were on show. The talent and enthusiasm of all our students was clear for all to see! The work of Chagall proved to be a perfect catalyst to unleash new skills, ideas and creativity from the children. Cette année, le département des arts du Primaire a choisi de s’intéresser à l’oeuvre de l’artiste russe Marc Chagall. Les élèves se sont rendus à la Fondation Pierre Gianadda à Martigny où ils ont pu voir l’exposition des œuvres originales du peintre. Ils ont découvert sa technique de peinture ainsi que son esprit inventif. Suite à la visite, les élèves ont travaillé sur des projets en rapport avec l’œuvre de Chagall. Selon les classes, des disciplines artistiques différentes ont été utilisées : peinture, dessin, imprimerie, collage et sculpture. Toutes les œuvres réalisées ont ensuite été exposées lors de l’exposition d’art du Primaire au mois de mai. Plus de 1000 œuvres ont envahi les murs et le sol de l’école primaire ! Tous ont pu se rendre compte du talent et de l’enthousiasme de nos élèves. L’œuvre de Chagall a donné naissaince à de nouvelles techniques, à de nouvelles idées et à une formidable créativité chez nos artistes en herbe !

College Du Leman’s magicians are known to rock quite hard when it comes to live performances. On Monday May 26th The National Honour Society hosted another great annual event, the Rock Fest and all proceeds went to help charity.
Throughout the night fans participated in loud screaming, head banging, and the occasional Mosh fever. One particular band got the crowd pumping and received a well earned encore. Devine Turmoil worked like a well oiled machine and kept the fans wanting more, even after their set was done.

This event was held at the garage in Collex-Bossy and it was successful to say the least. With over 10 bands and 30 songs the night was sure to be a hit, we even had aN out of school band bless us with their melodies. Different from the M7 concert which featured some of the same musicians, Rock fest is for the rockers at heart, quiet people beware, right in front Les musiciens du Collège du Léman sont réputés pour savoir mettre de l’ambiance lorsqu’ils se produisent sur scène. Ceci s’est largement confirmé lors du Rockfest du 26 mai dernier organisé par “The National Honour Society” (NHS) et dont les bénéfices ont été versés à des œuvres caritatives. Plus de 10 groupes se sont produits, parmi lesquels un groupe externe à l’école qui nous a fait l’honneur de sa présence. La traditionnelle cérémonie de remise des prix sportifs s’est déroulée fin mai dans le cadre des festivités de la Journée Internationale. Dix-huit coupes de première place ont été remportées par nos équipes, tous sports confondus. Cette année fut mémorable, non seulement du point de vue des excellents résultats sportifs réalisés par nos athlètes mais plus encore au vu des efforts, du dévouement et de l’esprit d’équipe dont ils ont fait preuve. Un certain nombre d’athlètes se sont particulièrement démarqués et ont eu l’honneur d’être élus membres du “All-Panther Sports Team” (voir noms ci-dessous). Parmi les nombreux excellents résultats enregistrés, trois méritent tout spécialement d’être soulignés. Tout d’abord, nous tenons à féliciter les joueurs de l’équipe Junior Varsity Boys de basketball pour avoir remporté, et ce pour la 16ème année consecutive, le “Swiss Group of International School tournament” qui s’est déroulé au CDL. Ensuite, nous saluons la victoire de nos équipes de football, Junior Girls et Primary Boys, lors du tournoi interscolaire de Genève. Elles auront l’honneur de représenter le Canton de Genève lors des championnats
The traditional Sports Awards Ceremony took place at the end of May as part of the International Day festivities. On display were an amazing 18 first place cups won by our teams in various sports. The year was considered a huge success not only because of the outstanding results but equally for the participation, sportsmanship and spirit demonstrated by our students. Select Varsity athletes who distinguished themselves with sports excellence, sportsmanship and dedication were honoured by being voted to the first ever All-Panther Sports Team (see below). Among the many excellent team results achieved, three truly deserve to be highlighted. Firstly, congratulations to the boys J.V. Basketball Team for winning the Swiss Group of International Schools tournament, hosted by CDL, for an amazing 16 consecutive years! Secondly, well done to our Junior Girls’ and
Primary Boys’ Soccer teams for winning the Geneva Inter-Scolaire Tournament. They now have the honour of representing the Canton of Geneva in the Swiss Championships, to be played in Thoune on June 18th. Last but by no means least, out of more than 60 teams at the outset of the season, the CDL/ Versoix Club Boys Varsity Basketball Team (composed of many CDL students and players from the community, along with our very own Coach T) are now the official SWISS CHAMPIONS!! A special thanks is extended to the Student Coaching Association, volunteer parents and members of staff, whose assistance with the organization and coaching of our teams and sports events greatly contributed to the success of the season and the well-being of our students. Meritas Academic Olympiad Jeremy Lo NBPS Teacher loj@nbps.org “Let us think of education as the means of developing our greatest abilities, because in each of us there is a private hope and dream which, fulfilled, can be translated into benefit for everyone and greater strength for our nation.” - John F. Kennedy (1917-1963) Thirty-fifth President of the USA There are no other words, in my mind, that can better express the true depth of what transpired in Boston than those of our former President. Held true even at the nascence of human civilization, education has been the direct progenitor of social evolution. It allows us to see past boundaries and reach out our hands in filial respect to all members of this diverse planet. On April 9th, it was Meritas’ turn to call forth this clarion song in a worldwide competition that measured the mind while showing how bonds can be made in the oddest of circumstance. Students from nine Meritas schools around the world came together in Boston to compete in the first ever Meritas Academic Olympiad. Students from different schools competed against each other individually in a Geography Bee, Spelling Bee, Math Bee, Declamation, Problem Solving, and Chess, and as a team in the Prep Bowl event. Challenged for three days, our students developed their “greatest abilities” and knew the delights and heartbreaks of successes and defeats. While inspired, it was not the competition itself that mattered but what occurred in the midst of it. Complete strangers at the beginning, the students quickly became friends with each other in ways that enhanced them and made them stronger so that very soon, students were almost never seen without a partner from a different school. From competitors whispering, “Good job” to their opponents, to quick conspiratorial giggles in the wings of the Old South Boston church, there was never a student who wasn’t promoting and encouraging their peers from their sister schools. It was a bittersweet departure as students gave their e-mail addresses and phone numbers to their new friends. Upon reflection, the importance of such competitions becomes clearer. Through interactions with our sister schools, each school becomes stronger both academically and in world citizenship. As we become more interdependent, the different strengths of our schools are pooled, raising the bar and enhancing our potential. Each of us holds dear a private dream and ambition that makes us persevere but it is only with the sharing of knowledge in the form of education that we can lay claim to those dreams. Let the flames of the Olympiad burn brightly as an inspiration to future students to hold tight to their private hopes while sharing them with the rest of the world.
