s the finale dress of the Rodarte Spring 2009 collection floated down the runway at New York’s Gagosian Gallery, Vogue magazine’s newly engaged West Coast Fashion Editor Lawren Howell sat transfixed. “I luckily knew the designers from work and after the show, I called to see if they thought the dress could be transformed into a wedding gown.” Howell was married to Kristopher Moller last fall in San Francisco in the designers’ answer: a custom Rodarte silk tulle one-shoulder gown layered with inter-worked sequin panels. The dove grey tint, which was achieved using an intricate dip-dye technique, set the tone for the rustic yet refined affair. L.A.’s Gregory Parkinson designed the bridesmaid gowns in a palette of “dusty and destroyed ballet colors,” while guests were shuttled from the chapel to S.F.’s stately Ferry Building in eco-friendly yellow school buses. arried beneath a majestic grove of Redwoods looking over her family’s Napa vineyards, Claiborne Swanson wed James Frank in a June ceremony that was equal parts romantic bohemian and old-world elegant. Walking down the aisle to the jubilant voices of the Joyful Sounds gospel choir, Swanson (in a Monique Lhuillier gown) and Frank gracefully mixed the traditional with the unexpected. The reception took place beneath a sweeping tent arrayed with blooms of every imaginable size: Cascading mixed-scale bouquets adorned every surface (the vision of Swanson and florists Torryne Choate of Birch and Kate Stanley Designs). “If I had to describe a feeling or a mood, it would be a marriage of opposites—Hollywood in the ’20s meets Paris on a warm summer night in the middle of a vineyard,” says the bride. Toasting the evening, the bride’s winemaker father gave the newlyweds a special bottle of vintage dessert wine, etched with their names, and the couple then drove off in her parents’ 1969 Mercedes under a full summer moon. herise Angelle and Aaron Hurlburt’s August wedding reception at Montecito’s storied Hahn Estate reminded the bride (President of Omelle luxury shoes) of a soiree straight out of The Great Gatsby. With sprawling lawns, flowing fountains and swans, the private setting was an exquisite backdrop for their wedding celebration. The decor, overseen by Lisa Vorce of Oh How Charming, included classic elements such as cozy white lounge vignettes, heirloom silver and vintage mercury glass mixed with edgier textiles like soft nude python skins, Chanel cuff napkin treatments and a custom high-gloss charcoal dance floor. Mindy Rice Floral design added pale blossoms throughout. Guests enjoyed a familystyle dinner at long feasting tables. Vintage cut glass lanterns hung from the pergolas, while mercury glass votives and candlesticks sparkled on the tabletops. After dinner, the couple danced under the stars to a 10-piece band. Late into the night, “comfort” snacks including croque monsieurs and “Dirty Chips” (the couple’s Louisiana hometown favorite) were passed as the evening came to a storybook end. J.M.H.

owntown L.A. might not be the spot every California couple dreams of for their big day, but for Negar Ali and Peter Kline, The California Club provided the perfect backdrop for vintage glamour. “We wanted an indoor venue—something that would feel more like an intimate dinner party,” explains Ali, a fashion stylist. That vision came to light with the help of close friends David Rodgers and Joseph Free. Known more for their high-profile events and clients, they collaborated with the couple to create their dream “un-wedding.” From candelabras and champagne coupes to towering vases loaded with lace-like baby’s breath, the effect was pure luminance. Wearing Monique Lhuillier adorned with Neil Lane vintage diamond bows, Ali’s Persian heritage was incorporated into the ceremony with traditional rituals. The lovely surprise of the evening came during the toast by Ali’s father: Their wedding date was 35 years to the day that her parents had left Tehran for a new life in California. ecalling a trip to the Parker hotel in Palm Springs years earlier, freelance writer Lizzie Garrett was instantly drawn to the desert destination after her engagement to Matt Mettler. Knowing that her mother, a tradition-minded State Senator in Illinois, would never approve of their more laid-back plans, the couple enlisted a team of local experts to pull off modern CA bohemia without turning convention completely on its head. “If I approached the wedding as a guest, what would I want?” she asked. Details such as a photobooth to replace a traditional guestbook, a banjo player and a pair of Prada gladiator sandals for the night added the desired flair. After a picturesque desert sunset, the midOctober celebration, which took place entirely outside, had guests dancing to afro-funk jazz beneath a firework-filled sky. K.M.
