President’s Welcome

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2024 Brass Ring Luncheon & Fashion Show! We appreciate the continued support and the generosity of the Denver community in supporting The Guild of the Children’s Diabetes Foundation (CDF) and the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes (BDC). The BDC provides clinical care for more than 8,000 children, adolescents, and adults with diabetes from the Rocky Mountain Region, not including the national and international referrals they receive as well. In addition, the BDC supports cutting-edge research programs to prevent and ultimately cure this chronic and life-threatening disease.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin. Its onset has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle. There is nothing you can do to prevent it, and for now, there is nothing you can do to get rid of it. That is why we are here. This disease isn’t going away today or tomorrow.

I am so grateful for the generous support and contributions of our Guild members and so many companies, families, and individuals. With your help, The Guild is able to fund research and support type 1 patients and their families with programs like Helping Hand, Holiday Assistance, Helping Little Hands, Charlotte Tucker Scholarships, and T1 Strong All Year Long Day Camps, just to name a few.

Working together, we are changing the lives of those affected by type 1 diabetes. I especially want to thank Carol Hamer and Amie Morozs for chairing the Brass Ring Luncheon & Fashion Show this year. I am appreciative for the time and effort they have put in to making this a fantastic day.

I would also like to thank Mackenzie Atencio, Amanda Miller, and the rest of the CDF team for their dedication and hard work. They never cease to amaze me with their efforts to improve the lives of those living with type 1 diabetes.

Many thanks to Dana Davis for her leadership, support, and friendship. Because of her, the world and the diabetes community are better places. Because of her and her family, no one who gets this diagnosis has to feel alone.

Lastly, my family continues to give me endless love and support and for that I am eternally grateful. I am especially thankful for my daughter, Christina, for showing me that you become strong in the moments when you think you can’t go on but you keep going anyway.

Thank you for spending time with us today. With all your support, a cure for diabetes is within reach.

With love and gratitude,

CO-Chairs’ Welcome

Welcome to the 2024 Brass Ring Luncheon & Fashion Show! Thank you for being here with us today and for supporting the Children’s Diabetes Foundation and the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes. Many do not know that type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that causes a person’s pancreas to stop producing insulin. It is not caused by poor diet or lack of exercise, and people can be diagnosed at any age. The Guild of CDF serves the type 1 community by providing underinsured and underserved pediatric and pregnant type 1 patients with medical supplies, medical alert jewelry, emergency care, travel and accommodations for appointments, and so much more.

The Brass Ring Luncheon is possible because of the hard work and dedication of the CDF staff and volunteers. We would especially like to thank Dana Davis, Amanda Miller, Carter Nelson, Mackenzie Atencio, Miriam Andolini, Morgan Palmer, and the rest of the CDF team. Their support and dedication to those with type 1 diabetes is unwavering.

We are very excited to have Lafayette 148 New York present our fashion show today, offering “understated intelligent design with a modern aesthetic.” They design for the modern, sophisticated woman with the most luxurious fabrics.

Thank you to Charlie Price for producing our show today and to Gina Comminello and THE LOOK Salon and Med Spa

for providing hair and makeup to the stunning models for the show. Thank you also to Rollins Professional Event Productions and Design Works for their part in today’s event, and to the Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel for their amazing facilities, service, and dining.

Many thanks to all our sponsors, media partners, underwriters, contributors, and table hosts; your support of the Brass Ring Luncheon enables the Barbara Davis Center to provide outstanding patient care. Thanks also to Bradley Joseph of SilverSpur Marketing for his continued hard work and support of this event. We are thrilled to have Michael Spencer, CBS News Colorado anchor, join us again this year as our host, and Halie Behr to once again be our auctioneer. Thank you for your support!

To our 2024 Guild President, Lori Finch, we are so lucky to have you in a leadership role for The Guild. We are honored to serve as this year’s Brass Ring Luncheon & Fashion Show co-chairs and to have had the opportunity to work with such an amazing group of people. Finally, to our families, for the love and support you provide, we are so thankful! Thank you all for joining us today. Until there is a cure for type 1 diabetes, we will continue to fight for those affected by this disease.

With gratitude, Carol Hamer and Amie Morozs

HOST

Michael Spencer, CBS Colorado

You can catch Michael Spencer anchoring CBS News Colorado at five, six and 10 p.m. every weeknight alongside his co-anchor Karen Leigh. Michael joined CBS Colorado as Sports Anchor in June of 2016, and made the switch to the news desk in April of 2023. His first assignment for CBS Colorado was at The White House covering the Super Bowl 50 Champion Denver Broncos as they celebrated their Super Bowl victory with President Obama. During his career in sports Michael has covered the Super Bowl, the NBA Finals, the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and the Colorado Avalanche run to the Stanley Cup Final.

Michael graduated from the University of Missouri in 2010 and started his broadcasting career in Midland, Texas covering the Friday Night Lights of high school football. Michael and Hailey enjoy being involved in the community. In addition to his role with the Children’s Diabetes Foundation and serving as host for the Brass Ring Luncheon & Fashion Show, Michael loves being involved with non-profit organizations that make a difference in the lives of families in Colorado.

Behind the scenes

Charlie Price Fashion Show Producer

Charlie Price is an award-winning hairstylist who travels the world inspiring and entertaining other hairstylists. His career has been wide and varied in scope. He has seen his photo work published globally and collaborated with many product manufacturers such as Aveda, Sassoon and Revlon Professional. He has created runway looks as lead hairstylist at NY Fashion Week for designers such as Jason Wu, Jeremy Scott and Cynthia Rowley—and even made a memorable appearance on Shear Genius, the Bravo TV series about hairdressers which aired in 22 countries. Price was also instrumental in bringing fashion designers Richard Tyler and Vivienne Westwood to The Denver Art Museum to mount shows (and Westwood’s first ever museum exhibition). When he’s not behind the chair tending to the manes of clients (as he has for the last 35 years), he focuses on his latest projects; Haute Coiffure Francaise USA Chapter, the Paris-based hair industry advocacy club, recently named him their Artistic Director. Additionally, he produces runway shows and photo shoots for a variety of designers, organizations and publications through the CO-OP Fashion Collective.

Behind the scenes

Gina Comminello

Hair & Makeup

Gina Comminello has an eye for beauty and style—she is one of the nation’s most landed makeup artists, with a 20+ year career traveling for cosmetic companies like Chanel, Christian Dior, and YSL. Gina has cemented her place as Denver’s go-to beauty guru and can be found at THE LOOK Salon and Med Spa, her beauty destination for the past 16 years. With a staff of 18, Gina created THE LOOK Salon and Med Spa so busy people can obtain much of their beauty and skin services under one roof: makeup application and tutorials, full hair care services, lash extensions, hair extensions, barbering, and eyebrow designs. The second floor is the Med Spa side of THE LOOK, offering laser hair reduction, Botox, fillers, RF Microneedling, BBL, IPL, sculpture, teeth whitening, IV therapy, and many other skincare services. THE LOOK Salon and Med Spa is home to experienced and talented professionals who are passionate about their craft and their clients. Gina is known for her makeup lessons, flawless makeup applications, and her cosmetic line FLAUNT YOU! She believes everyone has their own unique beauty and that makeup is a way to enhance one’s features, not something to hide behind. She loves to empower her guests by bringing out the YOU in FLAUNT YOU! Gina’s makeup line is coveted by mile high beauty mavens for its rich pigments, long wearing lipsticks and custom-blend foundation…perfectly colored match with coverage unique to one’s skin type, tone, texture, and lifestyle. This celebrated artist is not only known locally, but Gina’s work has also graced the cover of dozens of magazines and runway fashion shows like Vera Wang, Oscar de la Renta, Dior and Chanel. Gina’s chair is filled with Colorado’s most boldfaced names and everyday women alike.

Prayer CHild

Ryder Terry

Dear God,

Thank you for the strength and bravery you have given to all the type 1 diabetics in this room. Thank you for the grace and determination you have given the caregivers, the wisdom and dedication of the doctors and nurses, and the generosity and compassion of all the other people in attendance today.

The ups and downs and daily challenges of this disease can be hard to manage, so please continue to bless the technology that helps us, the Barbara Davis Center, the Children’s Diabetes Foundation and all the people who are here today, fighting for a cure.

With your guidance and support, we believe that together, we can make a difference.

The Meaning behind Slover’s heroes

Dr. Robert Slover had a major impact on pediatric endocrinology and diabetes during his long career. He was known for his compassion and commitment to the highest level of patient care to thousands of patients and families.

He served as a mentor and educator for faculty, fellows, residents and students at the Colorado University Anschutz Medical Campus. His research contributions as a clinical investigator impacted clinical care of diabetes at the international level. Prior to joining the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes (BDC) in 1994, he contributed 20 years of service in the U.S. Army Medical Corps and retired at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 1994.

When Dr. Slover joined the BDC, he engaged in clinical care, clinical research, and administrative roles. His clinical research most recently focused on the implementation of diabetes technology and the artificial pancreas to benefit pediatric and young adult patients with type 1 diabetes. He served as the site principal investigator for several studies at the Barbara Davis Center, including pre-pivotal and pivotal trials of hybrid closed loop systems in children as young as 8 years. In addition, he authored over 250 peer-reviewed publications.

From 2011 to 2021, Dr. Slover served as the Director of the Barbara Davis Center Pediatric Clinic and was the first holder of the Wagner Family Chair in Childhood Diabetes. He was a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. During his time as director, the division doubled its clinical and research operations.

The impact he had during his career will continue to benefit countless colleagues, trainees, patients and families for many years to come. In honor of Dr. Slover, we are naming the Brass Ring Luncheon & Fashion Show patients who walk the runway “Slover’s Heroes.”

“These children, to me, having seen them the last 45 years of my life, are my heroes.”
