ast February 25, 2013 ,The streets of Divisoria, Magsaysay Park in particular, saw Kagay-anon’s commemoration of the EDSA Revolution’s 27th anniversary in the form of a gathering of Nation Builders and local talents, and the launching of Bayani Challenge in an event dubbed “Let’s Take It 2 The Streets: A People Power Of Artists”. It was a non-profit celebration and the organizers which are NGOs made it a point to emphasize that there are absolutely no politics involved. The event was spearheaded by the coalition of 3 local groups working together for the 1st time, namely Pilipinas Natin CDO, Dire Husi Initiatives, and Support Local Talents Group. One of the highlights of the event was Pilipinas Natin CDO’s launching of their upcoming event, 2013’s Bayani Challenge. The Bayani Challenge has been an annual event since 2006, where volunteers are being challenged to heroically respond to a “5-day test of courage, endurance, and love for the county” through activities such as building of homes, repainting school walls and repairing school tables and chairs; they also have games and various events; they conduct nutrition programs, medical check-ups and health consultations among different barangays that are part of this 5-day (and beyond) call to heroism. Support Local Talents Group (SLTG) also shared their 1st anniversary with

that of the EDSA Revolution’s 27th. SLTG is a project and an advocacy headed by Beerandy Videos to promote CdeO’s talents especially the youth, from musicians, dancers, singers, bands to graphic artists & other creative individuals. For the event, SLTG provided performers to entertain audiences. With flash mobs from local dance crew Urbn Myx attracting the attention of onlookers & passers-by, to a number of original song compositions, rap performances & Rap Batikos (a CdeO based rap battle league) by local hip-hop talents. A fun fact that reflects patriotism is that most of SLTG’s extraordinary talents are also Pilipinas Natin Volunteers and nation builders, after having graduated Pilipinas Natin’s Balangayan Camp. Dire Husi Initiatives has already been a regular feature in our magazine & is continuing to make waves. A community of self-reliant and socially responsible young people collectively reaching their full potential through social entrepreneurship, arts and music, Dire Husi also provided their talents ranging from human beatboxes to fire dancers for the entertainment of the audiences during the event. Apart from that, they headed the on-thespot chalk drawing where everyone was welcome to take part of, & organized a live mural painting, with the design conceptualized by Sir Nicolas Aca, who collaborated with local art groups such as Biswal Mindanao, Dire Husi, Oro Art Guild, Artsada, as well as individual artists.CB

JOURNEY TO MIDDLE EARTH: Migrate or study in New Zealand

NEW ZEALAND ALSO known as “Middle Earth” for being the location set of the famed Lord of the Rings trilogy. The land’s native people the Maoris call it “Aotearoa” meaning the Land of the long white cloud, owing to its unusual cloud formations that seem to line its cerulean skies. But what readily comes to mind when one talks about New Zealand are its pristine, postcard-perfect sceneries and breathtaking landscapes of evergreens & snow-capped mountains - an almost perfect replica of what most of us envision paradise would be.

Benefits of Studying in NZ

It is no wonder that more and more international students are choosing New Zealand as their preferred place of study. With a most conducive environment for learning and a more

temperate climate coupled with a consistently high standard of education, New Zealand produces competent graduates with internationally-recognised qualifications. Anyone equipped with such credentials render themselves highly employable not only locally but also in the global market.

Working & Living in NZ

Possessing the right qualifications & experience to fit the standards of New Zealand’s immigration laws & policies guarantees a job placement, residency even migration. But to ascertain the proper requirements & processes, you should leave it to the hands of immigration experts.

Immigration Assistance

NZIHS (New Zealand Immigration Help Service) will keep you up to date with

the latest policy changes, paperwork, and even give advice on your immigration options and create a plan with you. They will essentially deal with the time consuming and complicated process that is immigration. SUMMER PEACE FESTIVAL 2013

P

TYRIL DANIEL BACAS, CORRESPONDENT

eace has been very elusive for the island of Mindanao for decades. Despite the multitude of peace talks and efforts, violence and corruption continue to run rampant in the region. These have even made it to the mainstream media, tagging the island as a violent hotspot of the country. It is no wonder that the Pinoy population generally sees the southern island as no man’s land. The Summer Peace Festival will use the universal language of the arts to bring together the peoples of Mindanao. The event will be led by young individuals who have roots in the region. The festival will attempt to change the perception of the region to the rest of the country and hopefully, will make a big step forward to lasting peace in Mindanao. The Summer Peace Festival will take place from April 26 to May 1 (Labor Day) and will be held at Cagayan de Oro City and Zamboanga City. The event will showcase traditional and modern art, harmony with nature and celebration of diversity in culture and people for peace in Mindanao. The Festival kicks off at Cagayan De Oro City from April 26 to 28.

The first leg is called Luna Musikalawaig; with Luna pertaining to the moon as it starts on the full moon of the month of April, and Musikalawaig which is a portmanteau of Musika and Kalawaig (Kalawaig is a Higaonon word for “water for the thirsty”). This leg will feature the musical talents of CDO’s mainstay bands WIZ, Superflirts and Gasulina. It will also feature local artists like Ryan Carreon, Agnes Arellano, Rene Kiefer and many more. This will also include workshops from local professional groups like ONE HAPPY STORY and Viajero Outdoor Team as well as Filipino native games workshops, fire dancing, recycling workshops and cosplay by Cause Play. Activities lined-up include, but not limited to, whitewater rafting, trekking, and tree planting. The CdeO leg of the Summer Peace festival will be held at Ki Bathala Gardens in Sitio Balaon, Brgy. San Isidro, Talakag; the venue is a permaculture farm beside the Kalawaig River. The second leg will be held in Zamboanga City dubbed Paz Musica del Mar. The event will be held from April 29 to May 1. Paz is the Chavacano word for Peace while Musica del Mar refers to the music and art of the peoples native to the peninsula of Zamboanga who

www.facebook.com/cdeosbest | www.cdeosbest.com

have played a significant role in the history of the region since time immemorial. This leg of the festival aims to establish lasting peace in Zamboanga City through shared experiences of food, art, music, yoga, water sports, and environmental rehabilitation. Activities include foods old and new that are favorites of the Zamboanganos brought by renowned Zamboanga chefs like Gene and Gino Gonzales, Him Uy de Baron and Ed Bugia to name a few. Yoga will be led by Rebecca de Villa, Will Tan and Gino Scarella. Other activities will include watersports as well as cleanup drives (coastal cleanups) to restore beauty in the peninsula’s coastlines. The event culminates with music from Siri Svegler, Thomas Walter and Isa Tabasuares. Other bands include The Mush Project, Sinyma, Humanfolk and Steady Machine. CdeO leg ticket sales are on Feb 18 to March 1 (P 500) / March 2 to April 1 (P 750) / April 2 to April 26 (P 1,000); Zamboanga leg ticket sales are on Feb 18 to March 1 (P 500), March 2 to April 1 (P 750), April 2 to April 26 (P 1,000) with all ticket sales before April 28 at only P500. RAFESSA BOUTIQUE:

A SUMMER

AFFAIR

S

ummer draws near and we look forward to some of the much anticipated things we can dawdle on while the season lasts— your coveted vacation, festive beach parties, fine sand, sweet breezes, bikinis and martinis, soothing reggae music and yeah, the tans. As we cruise and plunge into this year’s summertime, we strut with a rundown of the season’s freshest and boldest fashion surges. This year’s summerwear are bursting, be it with floral prints and pastel colors that embody an ultra-femme aura, or with safari and earth-mixed patterns that don a chic ensemble for a summer antic, or with paisley palettes that spell a sultry summer affair. So, ready for summer? The answer is just lurking around Rafessa, which parades its hypertropical presents fit for your summer escapade.

Prints are in! WHO SAYS PRINTS are dead? This summer, prints just get savvier, and its details are more sumptuous than ever. This paisley piece from Rafessa will never fail to flaunt your sexiness. Its prints are playful and exciting for the eyes, while the wide range of tints and patterns gives it more character. The black satin spread-type collar also

offers a semi-formal impression to the dress. When you haul it with a neon suit, you’re no longer a summer siren but a corporate-chic lass. Engineered in a classic style of clothing construction, you can basically wear it anywhere. During off-thecuff events, you can easily put this on. It is also perfect to wear during

cocktail parties set in a romantic garden or in a beautiful beach. Aside from having a mélange of hues, it also promises a comfortable wearing. This asymmetrically designed dress is at its best when paired with an equally multi-printed pair of shoes and some metallic bangles and aqua-inspired earrings. (Php 1, 600.00)

Simple, light and elegant BY ANY MEANS, SUMmer should be about chilling out and vibrancy at the same time. Just like this white sleeveless top that works its function very well. Plain white clothes are excellent light reflectors, disallowing absorption of the heat from the scorching sun (which normally happens to black clothes and other dark-toned colors) so you won’t feel suffocated. The thinner the top, the breezier it gets.

Considering the quality of the fabric is a must, too. It also comes with a subtle allusion of your inner wear or your bikini. The lower part of this one-piece is a geometric odd-even-cut skirt that highlights the lower part of the entire outfit. Suede blue and lemon yellow vertical zigzag stripes add a bold yet quirky personality while exposing your lean legs as your assets. The dress is as comfortable as it looks. You can walk

with it by the seashore with the white sand under your feet as the summer wind whips. The perfect place to wear this piece is at the beach while basking under the sun or while attending a party by the bay. You can also top it up with one of the multilayered semi-precious stones neckpieces available at Rafessa. (Php 520.00)

Shorts for comfort SHORTS HAVE A long way to go in the fashion scene. Folks say that summer won’t be summer without wearing shorts— short shorts, that is. This high-waist pair of black shorts, however, has a twist in this entry. Covered and overextended in great length by a black tulle above the ankle, it makes the whole look edgy with a hint of mystery. The high-waist also

creates a sexy illusion while being in a restructured 80s fashion style. Combining a silk oriental floral print with the black piece is classic, therefore it is wearable even if it’s not summertime. The mixture of black and bright hues is a mixture of sweetness and sophistication. You can positively play with it by wearing a pair of eye-catching pumps and some bright

floral bangles. 250.00)CB

The

WEDDING INDUSTRY

W

Ball

edding Zone Events Coordinator together with their official media partner ABS-CBN, will be launching the very first Wedding Industry Ball in Cagayan de Oro City. This gathering of well-acknowledged wedding suppliers inculcates to manifest strong business ties, and to produce an avenue for suppliers to be acquainted with one another, and not have to think about business-related workloads for the night. “This idea all started when I attended an event by the Philippine Association of Wedding Planners (PAWP) in Manila. From then on, I have this urge to make something alike [in Mindanao]. I talked to several resource persons […] about it. Then, finally after the whole process of exhaustive decisionmaking and preparation, we are about to launch our first ever Wedding Industry Ball,” says Marichu Jaca-Bacus, of Wedding Zones. “[The] fact that we would be able to gather […] the veterans and the rising suppliers in the wedding industry in one setting is a big achievement already.” The event will take place in Grand Caprice Restaurant, Limketkai Center on the 19th of March 2013, with its theme in line with the most talked about event this year: the 85th Oscar Academy Awards. It will not just be a night of plain socialization, but a night of glamour and fashion as well, where alluring and sophisticated evening gowns of the ladies will be showcased, along with the masculinity of the men in their best suits. “The people who were invited to join in the ball are all wedding supplier, and this includes coordinators, make-up artists, designers, photographers, videographers, event hosts […]. However, we will not only settle in inviting those who are residing in Cagayan de Oro City; we also invited guests from as far as Iligan City, Bukidnon and Surigao, to name a few,” says Marichu. With the Wedding Industry Ball as a head start, the future for the wedding industry in Mindanao seems bright. In fact, the gathering also connotes a much deeper essence, as it will be a fund raising event for a specific plan that will give rise to a community-based program: a free mass wedding this coming May.”We, in behalf of the wedding suppliers, want to give back to our valued clients through our collaborative artistic efforts. This will then be achieved by taking part in the community where we belong,” says Marichu. The Ball definitely signifies much better days for the whole industry. Indeed, the local wedding scene has grown into a much mature industry, where individuals who are in its cyclical framework are no longer seeing competition in a personal way, but rather in a perspective that views teamwork and ethics religiously.CB

classic hair metal, punk, alternative, glam and new wave with a twist, although more recent songs were also performed. Some of CdeO’s best and hottest rising bands were there including Soundmachine, The Superflirts, Jxamaria, Arthur, South Bliss Projekt, Bears of the South, Tonskie, Novelista Pasta.CB

#YOLO (@ CLUB TILT) YOLO (YOU ONLY LIVE Once) is a philosophy of youngsters aimed at encouraging people to push boundaries, to celebrate life, to live young, and to break conventions. The expression is the inspiration behind the #YOLO Party, held last February 2, 2013 at Club TILT, as a celebration of the young, hip, and free-spirited lifestyle of today’s youth; the “hashtag” (#), having been made popular by today’s social networking sites (Twitter/

Instagram,) symbolizes “trend”. The Party was a collaborative event of Rainbow Gunz Productions (an independent CdeO-based event promoter partnered by Ms. Jillian Gabaon and Mr. Karl Laurea) and Club Tilt CdeO. The event’s main DJ was DJ Red, one of CdeO’s hippest and coolest party DJs. With media partners CdeO’s BEST and GALA Publications, other sponsors include Royal Chateau Salon, Chick n’ Shack Diner, Kenko Naicha,

Essenza Nails and Massage, Delecta, Mon Cardenas, Baba Pelaez Photography and Nikko Cordero Photography.CB
