Vermonters Helping Vermonters Go To College
Dear CCV Donors and Friends, While there are many reasons to be grateful 2021 is behind us, there is also real cause for celebration. One silver lining from the past year is the unprecedented level of investment in college affordability in Vermont. Public and private funding initiatives have given thousands of Vermonters the opportunity to attend CCV for free or at very little cost. When asked, our students repeatedly tell us they feel college would not be affordable without financial support. Prices can deter so many, but the perception of affordability provides students with the hope and confidence to walk through our doors and change their lives forever. As we express our gratitude to the many donors who support CCV and our students, we recognize the role philanthropy plays in ‘Vermonters helping Vermonters go to college.’ In this report, we celebrate donors who have funded scholarships and grants that make CCV more affordable for our students. The impact of philanthropy extends beyond helping to cover a student’s tuition bill. The success of a 2020 scholarship program paved the way for increased state support in 2021 by demonstrating that when the financial barrier is removed, Vermonters continue their education. Providing greater access to college and career training is a win-win for Vermont, helping to strengthen our economy, solve persistent workforce challenges, and enable students to seek a brighter future. CCV Scholarship Carries On a Legacy of Learning CCV alumna Jennifer Frey ’97 was a lifelong learner born with a rare condition called trichorhinophalangeal syndrome. When Jenny passed away in 2001, her parents Bob and Lois Frey established the Jennifer Frey Memorial Scholarship to help students with special learning needs, or those who are studying to work as special educators. The Freys are proud and loving parents. They are also exceptionally generous people. Since retiring from long careers, they have been volunteering in their community in Johnson, Vermont, and for close to 20 years, they’ve supported CCV students through the endowed scholarship memorializing their daughter.

A N A F F O R DA B L E E D U C AT I O N F O R V E R M O N T ’ S F U T U R E T E AC H E R S Rebecca Busichio completed her CCV degree this past fall, before transferring to Northern Vermont University-Johnson. “I’ve always liked working one-on-one or with students that just needed a little extra support. I can really relate to them, because when I was in elementary school I was constantly pulled out of the classroom and I was always working with special educators or literacy teachers, so I can understand what they might be going through.” Simply put, the Jennifer Frey scholarship, and other financial support, has made Rebecca’s education possible. “Without it, I don’t think I would be able to go to college. I wouldn’t be able to afford the tuition and the fees associated with it, so it’s been a really big help.”

Taking on the Child Care Challenge, One Scholarship at a Time CCV’s Early Childhood Education Portfolio Scholarship was established by a private donor with a keen interest in seeing that child care providers are better compensated and are regarded with greater respect and appreciation, and ultimately that families can secure more reliable access to affordable, high-quality care.
Her generous gift covered the full cost for ten early educators to enroll in one of CCV’s Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) portfolio courses, in which students can earn credit for college-level learning they’ve gained outside of a classroom setting.
“This scholarship represents the best of our community, where Vermonters help Vermonters. For many of our adult learners, the idea of enrolling in 60 credits over a two-year period to complete a degree is especially daunting. Getting a semester or years’ worth of credits from one portfolio course puts students that much closer to a degree and boosts their confidence. The added incentive of a scholarship helps adult students take the plunge, and it’s inspiring to watch as they build momentum toward a goal that previously seemed unattainable.” — Melissa DeBlois, CCV Director of Prior Learning Assessment

It’s not just supporting a one-time event, but it sort of propels people into doing greater things with their lives.” — Anonymous donor This scholarship program honors educators’ experience in the field while launching them on the fast track to earning a college degree, which can simultaneously accelerate their career trajectory and increase the availability of high-quality care. For donors and students, PLA scholarships provide a huge return on investment. In total, scholarship recipients in the spring 2021 Focused Portfolio Development class earned 46 credits and saved $12,880 in tuition, and those who completed Assessment of Prior Learning earned 182 credits and saved $50,960 in tuition.

Advocates for CCV When Kate and Bill Schubart heard about CCV’s Life Gap Grants, they sprang into action. They reached out to their personal network and advocated for gifts to help CCV students overcome challenging situations that threaten their ability to stay in school. LIFE GAP PLUS
Extra Support to Meet Student Needs Unmet Student Need In 2020-2021, 61% of respondents in a student survey said they experienced at least one form of basic needs insecurity during the pandemic. Despite our efforts to make students aware of Life Gap Grants and other supports, nearly a third did not apply for aid because they did not know how or had not heard of emergency aid programs such as Life Gap.
Doing More Recognizing the need to do more, CCV embarked on developing a comprehensive program to address the basic needs of our students. This year, with a large gift from private donors,
CCV developed Life Gap Plus to increase access to resources that meet basic student needs.
Bridging the Gap Through Life Gap Plus, we are establishing food pantries in our centers coupled with peer-to-peer outreach around eligibility for 3SquaresVT, a partnership with Vermont Foodbank to address food insecurity among students. We are also expanding partnerships with other community organizations such as United Way’s Working Bridges to connect students with resources that can help meet other basic needs such as transportation, child care, and housing.
