Local IGA Helps Fund Community Lawrence’s IGA has been busy these past few weeks! Johnny and the staff presented a cheque to the Fitness Path working party for $4000 last week. The cheque was made up from the Community Chest loyalty point program which runs all year and is raised in a variety of ways including purchasing products with the IGA Community Chest logo printed on the label. Julie Middleton from the Fitness Path working party was thrilled to receive this injection of funds into the project, “Lawrence’s IGA has been so supportive of this community project and we are very grateful for this donation which will go towards landscaping the exercise sites” she said “the final piece of equipment, the ‘King Kong’, was installed last week and edging and mulching of this area will be happening in the near fu-
ture.” The ‘King Kong’ is the only one of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere and completes the circuit of fitness equipment that is now available at the Oval. The IGA also donated $4000 to the Canowindra Preschool from the Community Chest points collected. ‘We were delighted with the generosity and thank the community for supporting local businesses and their local preschool” says Adelaide Dunn, “the money will go towards equipment and improving the preschool.” When asked why johnny Lawrence chose to donate the money to these segments of the community he said, “I felt like they were worthy causes.” Keep up the generous work IGA! Cranky Rock Debate Continues... Dear Editor, In relation to Bob Sherwood’s letter I can think of other words than loose cannon! It absolutely amazes me the reaction that dams have on misguided people. In our last drought the river ran dry that is correct, dry, although Lake Rowlands had plenty of water in it. This water is being earmarked for everywhere except it’s natural water flow of the Belubula River. There was a cloud over whether water was being pumped further upstream however land owners never got an answer. Where were the people then screaming about water viability? The greenies didn’t care about our plight then when it was needed. For people unaccustomed to the Belubula valley, it is unique for its series of billabongs and sub terrain rivers, it has water very close to the surface allowing us to grow crops like Lucerne which this valley is famous for with-

This is with a dam at Carcoar that is effectively built on a hill, which irrigators only having access to approximately 1% of water that flow through this valley. Now for the next issue the Labour Government bought a vast amount of licenses on the Lachlan Scheme, they send this water down every year and every year it doesn’t make the Murray because there are marshes at the end of the river. Now this is the most interesting thing, these marshes are for native flora and fauna. So what do we do? Instead of flooding the marshes once every five or so years when there is a heavy rainfall event, we flood them every year. This has resulted in bird’s nests being flooded (for they know where the water height should be) and the big old river gums being so badly waterlogged that they have all died. It is now a haven for blackberry bushes, foxes and pigs. But you don’t hear the greenies say anything, they sit back in their city homes eating food produced in rural Australia and think they are doing their duty towards the environment. The world is running out of places to grow crops, this dam will see Canowindra blossom in tourism and intensive farming. The result will be more jobs and a more sustainable town not wholly dependent on broad acre cropping. We need this dam supported in meetings in Canberra and Sydney. Dear Editor, I hope, with the state election happening on Saturday, that every voter does their research prior. It appears that this election seem to be predominantly about whether of not to lease (for 99 years) the poles and wires. Voters should note that: • The Liberal government propose to privatise only 49% of the poles and wires • We, out here, are under the umbrella of ‘Essential Energy’ • Essential Energy is a NSW government corporation • This leasing proposal does not include Essential Energy and consequently will not affect us out here. I make this claim through the research I have done and I stand to be corrected if my research has let me down.I also understand that, in the event of a Liberal government being returned to office, a proportional chunk of the proposed sale will be spent on infrastructure in the Central West. Recently I have heard rumours of whispers that there are plans in place to privatise all sewer pipes and, can you believe it, the Opera House! I wouldn’t be surprised with the Opera House, believe it or not, I worked on the site installing precast concrete panels when alterations were made to get the building back in line with the ‘original’ plans. For starters, the idea of beauty is to make someone feel good and to emphasise their features rather than covering them up under a trowel laden layer of foundation. Feeling beautiful should be a pain free, luxurious process. Here’s some easy, cheap ways to get you on the way to feeling fabulous! • Sugar Scrub Sugar may be bad for your body but it’s great for your skin! Because your skin doesn’t metabolize fructose and glucose like your fat cells do it is a great way to tighten up pores and smooth out skin! A sugar scrub in a shop might set you back $20 so head to your kitchen instead. Mix equal parts white, brown or raw sugar with olive or almond oil and add essential oils of choice (to give it a nice smell). Rub this mixture onto your skin and massage for a couple of minutes then rinse off with warm water!
• Egg-Nana Hair Treatment This is a good one if you have any extra breakfast food left over. Want shiny locks? Open the fridge and mix up one egg and a mashed banana. Apply this as a thick paste to your hair and leave on for half an hour. Wash out as you usually would and you’ll have touchable tresses in no time. • Honey Face Mask Raw honey is one of the natural world’s greatest treasures. Not only is it anti-bacterial and never goes off but it is also great for getting soft skin! Once a week gently warm a tablespoon of raw honey by rubbing in-between your fingers and rub it evenly onto your face. Leave on for ten minutes and then delight in your after honey-glow after you rinse off with warm water. • Pesky Black Heads Be Gone! Drizzle raw honey over a fresh lemon wedge and rub the wedge into your problem areas for a minute. Leave the mixture to work it’s magic for five minutes and rinse with cold water. Easter Trading The Easter Bunny’s been today, he dropped some eggs along the way, follow the clues - you must be wise, as they will lead you to your prize… Easter is almost upon us once more! This Christian holiday is recognised by religious and non-religious alike as a celebration of new life. A great way to enjoy Easter Sunday is with egg hunts. These are fun for children of all ages and you don’t need to spend a fortune! You can buy small chocolate eggs or even hard boil real eggs and get the kids to paint them. For baskets any old bucket or bag will do and again to add to the fun get the little ones to paint their basket before the hunt begins. Easter egg hunts can be colour coded, laden with clues or can even consist of parts of the Easters story so each sentence they find has to be organised to make sense. Another integral part of Easter celebrations
is the Easter bonnet. Bonnets can be made from a variety of materials- from straw to felt or even a hat you have lying around the house that you don’t mind decorating with fluffy chicks, flowers and ribbons. Opening hours for shops and other businesses vary over Easter so be stock up on what you need before the weekend beginning on the 3rd April. GREEN Thumb ‘Plants suitable for growing in pots’ is the theme for Green Thumbs this month. Whether you want to “dress up” a verandah, entrance porch, balcony or courtyard; you want pretty flowers or striking foliage or interesting shaped plants- there is a huge range of options available. Some of my favourite plants to grow in containers are: Geraniums: beautiful long flowering, sun hardy plants that you see in magnificent hanging baskets or tall pots in gardens throughout Europe. Ivy leaf geraniums in various colours, Big Red and Pink Splash are some popular new cultivars. Standard patio roses: short (60cm) standard forms of many of your favourite roses are available. We’ve had a couple of Bonica patio roses in pots on the verandah for years, with masses of small pink flowers through spring, summer, autumn if you give them a regular trim back. Acacia cognata: a small, compact Australian native shrub with narrow, weeping lime green foliage. Cultivars Mini Cog and Limelight are striking for their form and foliage colour. Strappy leaved plants: such as Phormium or Cordyline are very hardy and come in a range of striking leaf colours. A couple of favourites are Cordyline electric pink and Phormium Choc n Cherry or Phormium yellow wave. Dwarf conifers: for a “formal” look, it’s hard to beat a couple of small, compact conifers in pots either side of the entrance to a house or section of the garden. Thuja smaragd is one of the light green conical forms that looks great and Thuja aurea nana is a more compact form with golden coloured foliage. Dwarf fruit trees: if you have limited space in the garden for growing fruit trees, container grown, dwarf fruit trees are a practical, achievable option. Trixzie cultivars of peaches and nectarines grow well in our region and produce full size fruit from trees no larger than a meter high. I’ve also had dwarf cultivars of popular apple varieties such as pink lady and granny smith, as well as productive lemon and lime trees grafted onto dwarf rootstock that can be grown very effectively in pots. Be wary of buying a PC just because it’s on special as you may not get such a bargain after all. Windows 7 is still ok especially if you are used to it or need it for business. Get Your Irish On! The Tullamore Irish Festival is held during Easter and this year will be the 12th. Weaving through the festival grounds will be market stalls, Irish food, BBQ, cakes, hot coffee and ice creams to keep all the family happy. The main stage will be chock full of Irish entertainment including U2 Elevation tribute band and Eric Bogle. There will also be the famous Tullamore Irish Hurdles, the Irish Tug of War and generous cash prizes for the ‘wearing of the green’ competition. Free entertainment for the children including rides, jumping castles and more will keep the little ones occupied. Entry is $30 for adults and under 18’s go free. The Tullamore Irish Festival is a family event which brings the community together and also shows visitors what a fantastic town Tullamore is. It’s a fabulous excuse to get outside, have a yarn and meet you people. If you’re lucky you might even experience the famous Irish charm!

Go Team! Team Canowindra consists of 12 people from various backgrounds including nursing, paramedics, teachers and farmers. The team will be taking part in The Weekend to End Women’s Cancer in Sydney which will consist of two 30km walks for 2 days in a row to raise funds for Chris O’Brien Lifehouse. Sasha Mckenzie, who moved to Canowindra last year, completed the 2014 walk, “the girls from Canowindra supported me on my last walk and then decided they wanted to take part this year…then next minute husbands wanted to be involved and we had a team!” she said “we all have different reasons for doing this but one common goal is to help improve treatments. The research done at Lifehouse will spread to surrounding areas and hopefully benefit us in the Central West.” Hats are available to buy at the Canowindra

Ladies Golf
Wednesday 18th March we held our Monthly Medal & Putting Competition. Results: Division1 Julie Fairley. Division 2 was Edna Hughes who also took out the monthly medal. Annette was the winner of our putting comp. Our 9 hole competition will be held over to next week. We held an afternoon tea to send off one of our fond members Pauline Laurie. Ros & Rolly made a very appropriate & tasty cake. Pauline has been an asset to our club always friendly, a keen & stylish golfer. She has entertained us as a member from the Bee Gee’s, Sister Act and ABBA. Pauline, you will be missed. Paul & Pauline are heading to greener pastures and we wish them all the best health so as to be able to hit the course in their retirement. This Week - Wed 25th is President V Captain Day 4BBB Stableford which will be sponsored by Edna & Janet.
Canowindra Pythons
It was a great start to the season for the Pythons, who were runners-up in the Orange City Rugby Invitational 10’s Division 2 Final. With half the team not able to play, a fair few being in Melbourne for Aaron Woolley’s bucks party, the Pythons only entered 12 players deciding to enjoy it and not take the day too seriously. Pythons lost to Orange City Colts 26-5, won against Island Boys 19-12, won against CSU Aggies 10-0 an then went down to Narromine 28-12.
CATCH of the week
The boys were set for a much needed ale when it was announced they came 4th in Division 2 and had to play the number 1 qualifier Orange City Colts in the semi-final. The Colts had a few seniors in their side to boost the forward pack so luck was against the Pythons. Half time score was 7-7 but Orange took the lead 12-7 in the second half. With seconds remaining the Pythons also scored, making it 12 all. The game then went into golden and the Python scored meaning they’d reached the final! Unfortunately Jack Beath hurt his shoulder during this game and was sent to hospital. This mean the Pythons had to play Narromine one player short. The Pythons put up a gallant effort but went down 28-7. Mick Grant, Jack Knight, Craig McKenzie, Jake Baker, Jack Beath, Ben Schaefer, Will (Cazza) Ryan and Tom Roth all played exceptionally. Next Saturday 28th March the Pythons will have a trial against a Wagga Aggies side at Cowra.
Men’s Golf
On Sunday 22nd March the event was a medal stroke. Winner on the day was Doug Rice on a count back from Tot Fisher with a nett 64. Tot Fisher won the monthly medal. Thanks to Ross Noble for sponsoring the day. Thanks also to Pam for cooking the BBQ. Sponsors day is next Friday 27th. If teams could be there ready to go by 9am and presentation for the day will be at 5pm. The golf club AGM will be next Sunday 29th at 9.30am. No golf until the AGM is over.
