march 2016 Volume XLIII, Number 9

While Central Illinois is often under snow during the month of March, we still look to the first day of spring on March 20 as a time of new beginnings. We anticipate green grass, a rise in temperatures, and blooming bulbs. It is a time that calls for fresh, modern growth and innovative ideas. However, spring will come a week early this year at WILL as we launch an all-new weekly lineup on WILL-AM 580, beginning March 14. On page 1 we provide you more information about The 21st, our locally-produced talk show featuring issues that matter to Illinoisans with a modern mix of interviews, phone calls, and social media interactions. We also welcome back Central Illinois native Tom Ashbrook as host of NPR’s On Point. This twohour morning news-analysis program will precede The 21st, ensuring that morning listeners will be up-to-date on both national and local topics. You can read more on page 2 about this popular series. Among the new broadcasts, listeners will also find that some shows have changed their broadcast time as well. Page 2 gives the scoop on changes in times to favorite shows such as Science Friday, Bookworm, and NPR’s Here & Now and Fresh Air. As we enter this new period in WILL-AM 580’s programming, we again thank you, dear Friend, for your continued support. Now more than ever, as both our state and country undergo vast economic and political change, we guarantee to bring you the best in programming.

What is usually in a digital space.” said Niala Boodhoo (below), host and executive producer of The 21st. “Public radio is a rare, respectful space where people meet because of their mutual love of the medium, so we are bringing those two spaces together.”

J

ust last month we shared the exciting news with you that Illinois Public Media is launching a brand new, hourlong talk show airing weekdays at 11 am starting March 14th. The 21st promises to be 21st century radio for the 21st state, but what does that mean for you, the listener?

The 21st wants to surface digital conversations that may be happening in isolation and bring them to a broader audience. The show’s creators are working closely with the College of Media’s Social Analytics Lab to also monitor, sift through and analyze how people in Illinois are reacting to events.

“We want to create a warm, respectful and welcoming environment for people to talk about issues of importance to them,” said Scott Cameron, News and Public Affairs Director. “I also hope our listeners will find they’re being connected to ideas and stories they might not otherwise encounter.” In keeping with the station’s goals of building a public radio audience of the future, The 21st wants to serve as a bridge between the traditional radio call-in talk show that you’re used to and the digital space where conversations are happening. The show doesn’t simply begin or end during its one-hour broadcast, but rather starts before and continues well past the broadcast hour—constantly tapping into a digital audience, and the conversations happening there, via social media. “Our firm belief is that people want to have common sense, rational conversations with those of differing viewpoints. And these conversations are happening, but

Beginning March 14th, the show will bring you the news, culture and stories that matter to Illinois, with a goal of connecting communities throughout the state. You’ll hear a mix of interviews with the people shaping the news on a variety of topics here in Illinois, from current events and politics to arts, culture and everyday life.

You can join the conversation now by following The 21st on Facebook @The21stShow and on Twitter @21stShow, or calling (217) 300-2121. The show also strives to be the talk show for the 21st century listener, serving a wider range of listening habits. In many ways, for many people, today’s listening habits have changed with our ever-changing and busier-than-ever schedules; so, not only is the show available for streaming via our mobile app and website, The 21st’s daily show will be available as a podcast on iTunes. No matter where the conversation originates—on the air, on social media, or on the phone—The 21st will connect you with what is going on in Illinois. continued on page 3 PATTERNS • MARCH 2016 1

Big changes to WILL-AM 580 Back On Point

The new WILL-AM 580 schedule welcomes back NPR’s On Point at 9 am weekdays. Broadcast live from Boston, the two-hour call-in show is hosted by award-winning journalist Tom Ashbrook. The show’s lively conversation covers everything from breaking news to ancient poetry and features writers, politicians, journalists, artists, scientists, and ordinary citizens from around the world. Each hour is structured as a stand-alone show, focusing on a specific topic, with the first hour segment of Friday’s show to wrap up the week’s top stories. Ashbrook, a native of Bloomington, Ill., began his career in public radio following the attacks of September 11, 2001, when he was asked by NPR and WBUR-Boston for special coverage. His career in journalism spans two decades and includes acting as foreign correspondent, newspaper editor, and author. He studied American history at Yale University and Gandhi’s independence movement at Andhra University, India. A recipient of the Livingston Prize for National Reporting, Ashbrook describes On Point as “unflinchingly honest” with “Fresh voices. Passionate voices.” Illinois Public Media is proud to welcome this Central Illinois native back to our airwaves! 2 PATTERNS • MARCH 2016

Same shows, different times With the addition of The 21st, Illinois Edition, and NPR’s On Point, several of your favorite shows will now air at different times. The changes include: • NPR’s Here and Now at 1 pm weekdays • NPR’s Fresh Air at 3 pm, with a repeat at 8 pm, weekdays • Science Friday at 9 pm Fridays, with a repeat at 5 pm Saturday • Big Picture Science at 6 pm Saturday • Commonwealth Club at 10 pm Saturday • Bookworm at 11:30 pm Saturday • The Treatment at 1 pm Sunday Unable to listen live? Go to iTunes to search for your favorite shows.

Parting is such sweet sorrow On March 14, we say farewell to some of our current series. PRI’s The World, A Way With Words, New Letters on the Air, and NPR’s All Songs Considered will no longer air on our live broadcast. But all is not lost, as these shows are still available online! Search iTunes for on-demand access to these classics.

The Charitable IRA Rollover Is Back — For Good! On December 18, 2015, President Obama signed legislation that reinstated and made permanent the Charitable IRA Rollover. If you are 70½ or older, you can make a tax-free gift directly to WILL from your Individual Retirement Account (IRA) now and for years to come. It’s a smart way to enjoy tax savings and support the mission of Illinois Public Media. Here’s how it works: Who? You must be 70½ or older to make an IRA rollover gift to WILL. What? You can give up to $100,000 from your Traditional or Roth IRA. How? Instruct your plan administrator to send a specific dollar amount directly to WILL. (You cannot withdraw the funds yourself.) Your IRA administrator can send the gift by check or electronic transfer. You can contact WILL (see right) for assistance. Please let us know of your charitable intentions so we can ensure your gift is processed in an accurate and timely manner.

When? Anytime! Benefits to You: RMD. Your donation will count towards your required minimum distribution for the current year. Tax Savings. You can exclude up to $100,000 of this gift from your federal gross income — resulting in lower taxable income and possible tax savings ($200K exclusion may apply for taxpayers who are married and filing a joint return). Tip: This tax savings is especially valuable to donors who are non-itemizers and donors who have reached their limit on itemized charitable deductions. Impact. You will have the personal satisfaction of benefiting our community more than you may have originally thought possible. Contact us for more information at 800-898-1065

continued from page 1 Make sure to also visit 21stshow.org to check out the show’s pre-launch work, including interviews with University of Illinois Interim Chancellor Barbara Wilson on the impact of Illinois’ budget impasse, as well as Bob Woodward on the 2016 Presidential Race and Abraham Lincoln.

“I believe that at its best, public radio talk shows can bridge divides, spark insightful conversations and, perhaps most importantly, give us all a chance to see that we maybe have more in common than we think we do,” said Niala. “We want to set a new standard for conversation in Illinois.” WUIS in Springfield joins WILL as a launch partner, bringing The 21st to their Springfield audience. As part of the launch partnership between WILL and WUIS, WILL-AM 580 will also air Springfield’s midday news magazine Illinois Edition. PATTERNS • MARCH 2016 3

The Legend of

Stan “The Man” Musial broadcaster Jack Buck. It will air at 7 pm Monday, March 14 as part of our WILL-TV pledge drive.

Musial, widely considered to be one of the greatest and most consistent hitters in baseball history, played for the St. Louis Cardinals from 1941–1945 and 1946–1963. The outfielder and first baseman set multiple National League records and led St. Louis to three World Series Championship titles. Take a look back at The Legend of Stan “The Man” Musial, a documentary commissioned by the Musial family in 1990 and narrated by former St. Louis Cardinals

Watch interviews with author James Michener; broadcasters Harry Caray and Jay Randolph; sportswriter Bob Broeg; baseball commissioner Bowie Kuhn; baseball executive Branch Rickey; baseball players Terry Moore, Enos Slaughter and Frenchy Bordagaray; various coaches; Musial’s mother, Mary; his wife, Lillian; and Stan the Man himself as they discuss the amazing career of the 2013 Presidential Medal of Freedom winner. The film covers Musial’s early life in Donora, Penn.; meeting his wife; and making his way from minor league class D to the majors. It also touches on Musial’s other interests, such as music, and is packed with anecdotes from those who watched Musial develop his baseball skills. This biopic is a can’t-miss for dedicated Cardinals fan.
