Hymn 488

Slane

A Prayer for the Evening Stay with us, Lord, since the day is far spent and the night is coming; kindle our hearts on the Way, that we may recognize you in the scriptures, in the breaking of the bread, and in each other. Amen. Please be seated.

Psalm 139:1-5, 12-17

Domine, probasti

LORD, you have searched me out and known me; you know my sitting down and my rising up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You trace my journeys and my resting-places and are acquainted with all my ways. Indeed, there is not a word on my lips, but you, O LORD, know it altogether. You press upon me behind and before and lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is so high that I cannot attain to it. 1

For you yourself created my inmost parts; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I will thank you because I am marvelously made; your works are wonderful, and I know it well. My body was not hidden from you, while I was being made in secret and woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes beheld my limbs, yet unfinished in the womb; all of them were written in your book; they were fashioned day by day, when as yet there was none of them. How deep I find your thoughts, O God! how great is the sum of them! If I were to count them, they would be more in number than the sand; to count them all, my life span would need to be like yours.

Collect of the Day Summoning God, inviting us to see what we find so hard to notice — the blinkers we wear, the lies we accept: as we are held in your gaze, may our faith awaken to see your kingdom growing and heaven open wide; through Jesus Christ, son of Joseph. Amen. Please stand.

The Holy Gospel Priest People

John 1:43–51

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.” Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him about whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth.” Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” When Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, he said of him, “Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!” Nathanael asked him, “Where did you get to know me?” Jesus answered, “I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you.” Nathanael replied, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” Jesus answered, “Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these.” And he said to him, “Very truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.” Priest People

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ.

A period of silence is observed. 2

The Reflection Two minutes of silence is observed following the reflection.

Prayers of the People Holy and Most Gracious God, we pray for our siblings who live in every state of need this night. We pray for those in need of shelter, and the dignity that comes from having a place to call home. We pray for those around the world, around the country, and in this very city who will go to sleep hungry this night. We pray for those who are persecuted and punished for the color of their skin, what they believe, where they come from, how they worship, or who they love. We pray for those whose desperation, vulnerability and innocence are leveraged for profit. We pray for those who are afflicted in body, mind, and spirit, and call out in the night for relief. We pray for those who live in constant fear of violence on their streets, from their skies, in their houses of worship, and in their homes. We pray especially for children who have never known a life free of fear and need. We pray for those who have died and see no more, especially for those who have given the last full measure of devotion for the cause of freedom and dignity, that they may find rest in the place you have prepared for them. Grant us, O God, a sense of purpose to use our many blessings, talents, and privilege to house the homeless, feed the hungry, liberate the persecuted and oppressed, heal the sick, comfort the grieving, make peace in our world, and by your grace bring about your kingdom on earth as it is in heaven; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Additional Prayers of Intercession & Thanksgiving Following the Prayers of the People during the instrumental music and hymn, and at any time hereafter, you are welcome to come forward to light a votive candle as a symbol of your prayer. As we see others light candles, we recognize that we are all carrying prayer concerns known to us alone, and we are reminded to treat one another with kindness and care. Tapers and votives are located to the right of the altar and in front of the transept to the left. Please feel free to go to either of these places to light a candle. 3

The people stand.

The Holy Communion The Great Thanksgiving Celebrant The Lord be with you.

And also with you. Celebrant Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give God thanks and praise. People

We praise you, God of many names, whose Spirit runs free through all the earth, whose image lies deep in every mortal soul. In your grace your Word is made known to every people, calling forth the best they have to offer; your Beloved is immersed in the waters of creation healing the chaos that floods our world; your Son is the guest who offers new wine changing hearts grown withered and cold. Therefore we celebrate the rays of morning light that bathe the world in glory and kindle a new song: 5

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. We ask that your Holy Spirit will fall upon us and upon these gifts that these fragile, earthly things may be to us the body and blood of our lord and brother, Jesus Christ; who, on the night that he was betrayed, gathered with his faltering friends for a meal that tasted of freedom. Calling them to his table, he took bread and broke it and said: ‘THis is my body, which is given for you. Do this to remember me. In the same way after supper, he took the cup saying: THis cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, whenever you drink it, to remember me.’ As on that night, so here and now he offers himself in touch and taste beyond all words can hold. Great is the mystery of faith: Christ has died Christ is risen Christ will come again. Therefore, in our eating and drinking we are filled with the life-giving presence of Christ; we proclaim him as creation’s host, transforming poverty into plenty in the reckless generosity of love. Inspire us with the hope that one day death and greed will be no more, and people without number will come from east and west, north and south, to share the kingdom meal. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom and with whom and in whom in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory be yours, Mother of blessings, forever and ever. AMEN.

The Lord’s Prayer And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. 6

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Breaking Of The Bread Celebrant People Celebrant People

We break this bread to share in the Body of Christ; We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread. Bread and wine; the gifts of God for the people of God. May we who share these gifts be found in Christ and Christ in us.

Post Communion Prayer Celebrant Let us pray.

Lord of the wedding feast, we thank you for sharing with us the abundance of your life: in the beauty of humility may we receive with joy the stranger’s gift, the water’s grace, the living wine of love’s desire. Amen.

The Blessing May Christ, who draws the nations to himself, teach us to love our enemies; may Christ, who enters the water of baptism, lead us to die to all but love; may Christ, who gives new wine for the world, turn our bitterness into joy; and the blessing of God, Creator, Redeemer and Sustainer, be with you this night and always. Amen.
