Canadian

capabilities

in

Communication

Technology

(ICT).

ICT is an important pillar of the Canadian economy and is a driver of Canada’s economic growth and innovation. The ICT sector is instrumental to advancing Canada’s future as an innovative society through research and development (R&D) of over 39,000 Canadian ICT firms. In Canada, ICT companies are the largest performer of R&D and over 40% of all R&D scientists work within the ICT sector. Canada has internationally recognized expertise in big data and analytics (artificial intelligence, machine learning), communications technologies (wireless and wired equipment, fibre optics and communications software), digital media (gaming, animation and special effects) and microelectronics. Other areas of potential technology and market opportunity for the ICT sector include cloud computing, microsystems, e-health applications and software as a service (SaaS). According to the International Monetary Fund, five of the world’s 20 fastest-growing economies are in sub-Saharan Africa. The Government of Canada is expanding its trade and investment in sub-Saharan Africa, and significant opportunities exist for partnerships between Canadian ICT companies and African countries. The Government of Canada takes pride in Canadian companies and encourages you to visit the Canada Pavilion to discover more about Canada’s expertise in ICT. On behalf of the Government of Canada, I wish all of the delegates a successful and productive AfricaCom.
