THANK YOU TO THE JEWISH FEDERATION! As we near the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Harvey, it is important that we acknowledge the Jewish Federation of Greater Houston's role in our community's recovery efforts. We are so thankful and appreciative of the support they have provided to institutions like ours in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. Our organization was also a beneficiary of these funding efforts. Whether helping local day schools, synagogues, and key institutions rebuild or providing financial support to help families with recovery or children to attend summer camp, the Federation stood by us to meet the needs of our community and ensure Houston’s vibrant Jewish future. For our Congregation, the Federation’s support assisted in the rebuilding of our synagogue. The Jewish Federation continues to work hard to raise more funds as our recovery continues. We are so grateful to have them as part of our community.

2018-2019 PROGRAM SCHEDULE 100 Jewish Men is a group of men dedicated to improving themselves and each other as men, fathers, husbands, brothers, sons, friends and Jews. Through controversial, thought-provoking speakers and small group discussions, we will explore what usually remains unspoken in men’s lives at work and at home. We have an incredible year planned and we hope you choose to be part of it. A complete schedule can be found on our website by visiting: bethyeshurun.org/100JM

Thank you to our Steering Committee! Michael Wiesenthal, Mark Newman, Wayne Arzt, Nir Grossman, Jerry Selzer, Michael Schwartzberg, Bill Schwartz, Paul Katz, Michael Lisch, Eric Gibbs, Marty Peskin, Reid Friedman, and Ryan Kagan. All dinners at 7:00 pm followed by programs at 7:30 pm. Wednesday, October 10 | Helen Sharkey Gebhard | Learning from my Mistakes When Helen Sharkey was hired as an accountant in 1996 by Dynegy—an up-and-coming energy trading company in Houston—she had no idea the job would ultimately lead to 28 days in a maximum-security federal prison. Today, Helen speaks about her experiences with brutal honesty and not a trace of self-pity. She talks about her excitement when she landed her “dream job” at Dynegy, only to be followed by dismay when she began to doubt the ethics of what they were doing and, ultimately, her complete loss of faith in the company. We have a lot to learn from her experiences. For a complete biography visit: helensharkey.info/bio/ Wednesday, November 14 | Jim G. Conway, FBI agent | The Challenges of Protecting Houston from Terrorists James G. Conway has served our nation with distinction for over 35 years, twenty-five of those years as a Special Agent of the FBI. Beginning in 1984, Conway, was a member of the Houston Division of the FBI where he managed a number of successful and complex investigations in the areas of Organized Crime, Violent Crime, and Counterterrorism. Currently, Conway is the President of Global Intel Strategies a Houston-based firm that consults, trains and advises government agencies, academia, and the media on terrorism and national security issues as well as private sector corporations on global and travel security issues, counterterrorism measures and risk mitigation. THE MOST UNDERRATED HOLIDAY

Of all the holidays on the Jewish calendar, there is one which is so underrated you may not have even heard about it. This year, that day is Sunday, September 30th, the last day of Sukkot, also known as Hoshanah Rabbah...beginning at 8:00 A.M. Leave plenty of time; treat it as if it Rabbi Horwitz were a full holiday service, which in many ways it is! (And breakfast will follow.) What’s special about Hoshanah Rabbah, and why does it take more time? It has much content and pageantry: Hallel, Torah reading, Musaf prayers (because it is during Sukkot), and an expanded service with lulav and etrog. On other Sukkot weekdays, we make one procession with lulav and etrog; on the seventh day, we make seven; hence the name Hoshanah Rabbah, the “great,” expanded service when we ask for God’s help in the still new year. But what makes it so meaningful? Hoshanah Rabbah is the finale of the High Holiday season, the “last chance” for a rewrite, an appeal of the decree sealed on Yom Kippur. Because of this, many musical elements from the Days of Awe are heard again this morning; the leader again wears the white kittel. Additionally, one ritual takes place only on this day: the beating of willow branches. For some, it indicates dependence on the rain which brings these unadorned leaves into being; for others, it represents the desire to drive away sin and “the falling away of the sparks of judgment.” At a certain point, following the penitential period, we have to drop the focus on judgment.

9/1 Selichot 9/5 Mindful Prep For the High Holidays 9/9 Erev Rosh Hashanah 9/10 Rosh Hashanah 9/11 Rosh Hashanah II 9/16 Rosh Hodesh Program First Day of Sunday School/Sulam Kever Avot Cemetery Service 9/18 Erev Yom Kippur 9/19 Yom Kippur 9/22 My Shabbat 9/23 Sisterhood’s Sisters in the Hut Erev Sukkot 9/24 Sukkot I 9/25 Sukkot II Pizza in the Hut 9/26 Kehillah High Kick Off 9/27 The Gathering Place Young Adult Sushi in the Sukkah 9/30 Religious School Consecration Hoshanah Rabbah 10/1 Shemini Atzeret/Erev Simchat Torah 10/2 Simchat Torah Every Tuesday: Wisdom of Torah with Rabbi Strauss at 8am Every Wednesday: Meditation & Israeli Dancing

More importantly, the repeated processions around the Chapel may lead to something we don’t usually have in services: a brand of sensory overload, perhaps an expanded consciousness. The service feels like an extension of Neilah, and its conclusion like the Tekiah Gedolah after Yom Kippur. For me, this yearly moment touches on the mystery of our existence in a way few rituals do. We build up to it by including elements from throughout the year: High Holidays, Festivals, and ideas with which our siddur confronts us daily. What would religion be without that confrontation with mystery? I believe my life is richer, my sense of higher realms expanded, my appreciation for Judaism deeper, because of one morning, one peak moment each year. Join us that morning and see. Daniel Horwitz Rabbi of the J.B. Greenfield Chapel 7
