From Rabbi Sarah Fort

This is the guy Israelis celebrate in the name of on December 31st?

Celebrating Jewish holidays in Israel is such a special opportunity. Seeing menorahs in every window, restaurants with special Passover menus—it truly feels like the Jewish state. But what about non-Jewish holidays?

For one thing, secular New Year’s in Israel is not particularly popular. Only two-thirds of Israelis stay up til midnight on December 31st. The country certainly doesn’t shut down the way it does in the States and elsewhere. My memories of Sylvester in Israel were of I wasn’t surprised, when I lived there, to see not the biggest parties being at hotels (full of tourists) and a single Christmas ornament. I was, however, quite hostels (full of students from abroad). surprised that not only was New Year’s celebrated, but But I actually think it’s nice that Israel has it had a completely different name: Sylvester! claimed Sylvester as her own. Yes, Pope Sylvester My Israeli friends looked at me like I was the crazy was a horrendous human being. He would have been one. Who hadn’t heard of ‘Sylvester?!’ I had to do some devastated to know that a country full of millions research. In Israel, those who do celebrate the new of—oh yes, Pope!—Jews is celebrating in his name. year (of the Gregorian calendar), call it ‘Sylvester.’ But Perhaps that’s the point, too. Here was a man who who was that? And here’s where the story gets weirder. tried his darndest to keep us down, to keep us out of Jerusalem—home of the Jewish soul! And yet there, Pope Sylvester was also a saint, and his saint’s and elsewhere, we survive. We thrive. Davka, despite day is December 31st. That a Jewish country—nay, THE everything, we dance and drink and sing, generation Jewish country—celebrates the saint’s day of a pope is after generation. Despite those who would see our difficult enough to believe. But this particular pope— end, we live on joyously. With a wry smile on my face, wowza! Pope Sylvester was a vicious anti-Semite, I’d raise a glass of champagne to Sylvester for that. instrumental in Constantine’s barring Jews from living in Jerusalem in 324, among other anti-Semitic laws. We Value Our Members Beth Yeshurun is a community institution with a vital mission: to offer spiritual experiences that inspire and uplift all ages, to educate children and adults, and to provide a setting in which Judaism can be joyously lived and experienced.

AROUND THE SHUL MENSCH OF THE MONTH

MAZEL MOMENTS

Congregation Beth Yeshurun would like to acknowledge with a hearty Mazel Tov our Day School, its Board, and Head of School, Jennifer LeVine, for implementing a new tuition model that makes our school more affordable to every parent who desires a strong Jewish day school education for their children. Jennifer and her team recognized that tuition costs have been rising across the country and Jewish families were struggling with the financial aspects of their educational decisions. In October, the powers-that-be determined that money should never be the primary deterrent to anyone who wants a solid foundation in Judaism to their children. They made the critical decision to lessen the burden on its young families by cutting tuition costs across the board. We welcome this move by our Day School and sincerely hope that the new tuition model will allow more children to benefit from the outstanding secular and Jewish day school education BYDS offers.

Lori Herzog is our welldeserving “Mensch of the Month” for December 2019. A Vice President of the Executive Board, Lori has chaired the High Holiday Committee for the past 10 years where she coordinates all of the honors for the High Holiday services. From opening and closing the Ark, to assigning Torah readers and holders for over 100 Aliyot for six services in Barg Sanctuary, Lori works behind-thescenes to ensure the holy days run smoothly and on schedule. “I find it a great honor to be a part of such important services in our community and help bring this participation to so many in the congregation who want to be an active part of the High Holidays,” said Lori. Lori joined Beth Yeshurun as a young adult when she married her husband, Benny. Her mother-in-law, Zelda Herzog, ran the shul’s catering department for years and Lori knew early on that her new synagogue was going to be a big part of her life. “When I lost my dad, I started going to Friday night services regularly, and noticed a lack of young families throughout the synagogue; thus, I started my mission to get the next generation of Houston Jews engaged and involved in synagogue life.” Lori and Benny have two daughter, Allie (Eric) Danziger and Meg (Jacob) Grossman and two grandkids Milly (2 ½) and Eve (1). We are so fortunate Lori “married” into our shul family and has worked tirelessly for the past decade in her role on the Board. In her honor, Rabbi Strauss will make a donation to the Jeffrey Feinstein Foundation to provide assistive technology equipment to spinal cord injury patients at TIRR (The Institute for Rehabilitation and Research) Memorial Hermann.

JEWISH EXPERIENCE Remember those wonderful “smells” of Shabbat when we arrived at Bubbie’s home on Fridays? Unfortunately, too many of us are too busy these days to prepare a Shabbat dinner and celebrate the holiest of days. Well, your friends at Beth Yeshurun want to bring back those family memories and will even do the heavy lifting (and December “mensch,” Lori Herzog, is spearheading these efforts). For the past few months, our Catering Department has been preparing wonderful Shabbat Meals to-go every other week so congregants can create new memories with family and friends. So let us do the cooking and provide your family with chicken or brisket or salmon with all the extras (and, of course, a challah). For a mere $18 per person, all you have to do is heat the oven, chant the Kiddush, recite the motzi, light the candles and enjoy a home cooked KOSHER Shabbat meal, just like Bubbie used to make. For more information, check out www. bethyeshurn.org/shabbattogo.

THE SCHTICK When the famed writer Isaac Bashevis Singer reached the age of sixty, he told his friend he knew he would live to 120. “How can you be so sure?” his friend asked. “Because” explained Singer, “when I went for my checkup my doctor told me I was half dead.”

Please send all nominations and ideas to Ron Brounes at ron@ronbrounes.com Only submitted material will be considered for publication. 3

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 11 - SCOTT SONENSHEIN

What does the condition of our lawns tell us about our most important endeavors in life—how to build businesses, prosper in a career, or even raise families? It turns out quite a lot. Drawing from his wealth of scientific studies in the past decade, Scott Sonenshein shows that our strong desire to keep up with others—our colleagues’ work titles and budgets, our friends’ accomplishments, and even our neighbors’ green grass—has put us on a destructive path that makes us ultimately less successful and satisfied. He explains how to redirect the energy spent chasing after what others have to realizing our own goals and dreams. Using research interwoven with stories, he explains why the most important skill to navigating life’s challenges is resourcefulness—getting the most out of what’s already in hand.

Wisdom of Torah

with Rabbi Brian Strauss Tuesday Mornings, 8:00am Together, over breakfast, we will explore the ancient wisdom of Torah and how it can be applied in today’s modern world. All are welcome!

CURATOR’S FAVORITES “…these are a few of my favorite things. ♩♫♩” For the past 15 years, Daniel Musher has overseen the Mollie and Louis Kaplan Museum of Judaica. During that time, the collection has doubled in size, and the display areas have been expanded and are constantly updated. Each year since 2010, the Museum has brought in a speaker to lecture on the collection. On Sunday, January 12th, at 4:00pm, Daniel will be the lecturer, speaking about his favorite pieces in the collection, many of which have been added during his tenure as head of the Museum Committee for CBY. He will show enlarged images and discuss fine points that you may not ordinarily notice when you visit the museum. He states that “This is one of the finest Judaica collections currently on view in the United States,” and he plans for his talk to justify this view. This lecture will be free and open to the public. There will be time for questions and answers, and a reception will follow. Please make plans to join us! 7

BETH YESHURUN HAS HAD A GREAT YEAR OF YOUTH PROGRAMS SO FAR! Middle school and high schoolers enjoyed celebrating the High Holy Days together with interactive and thought-provoking programs. BYT (9th-12th grade) hung out in the Sukkah together while eating edible cookie dough and decorating bags to be donated to Kid’s Meals. The inaugural Teen Leadership Council recently met to discuss and envision the future of teen engagement at Beth Yeshurun and are looking forward to implementing their ideas soon. BYachad (6th-8th grade) started off the year with a trip to Candytopia, enjoying candy samples and interactive displays. In November, middle schoolers also participated in the Synagogue Scavenger Hunt where they raced around the building searching for clues. Bonim (3rd-5th grade) will have its first event on December 14. We can’t wait for more excitement in 2020! For more information about CBY’s Youth Programs, contact Sarah Goldberg at sgoldberg@bethyeshurun. org or 713-666-1881.

HANUKKAH 2019

anukkah is a Jewish holiday which celebrates the victory of the Maccabees over the larger Syrian army. It also celebrates a miracle that happened during this time, where just a day’s supply of oil allowed the menorah in the rededicated Temple in Jerusalem to remain lit for eight days. Therefore, Jewish people celebrate Hanukkah for eight days. Hanukkah begins on the 25th day of Kislev, this year it begins December 22nd. The Hebrew word hanukkah means rededication. The hanukiah (or hanukkah menorah) is a candle holder, an important Hanukkah symbol. It has nine candles. Traditionally, one candle is separated from the rest, usually by being higher than the other eight. On the first night, only one candle is lit, on the right side of the hanukiah. On the second night, a second candle is added, and they are lit from right to left,. This continues for all eight nights. The candles are never lit directly - instead, the higher candle, (called a shamash, meaning “attendant”) is lit first, and then used to light the rest of the candles. While the candles are lit, blessings are said over them. Jewish children often play a game called dreidel. The dreidel is a foursided spinning top, each side having a Hebrew letter. The fire letters (nun, gimel, hey, shin) stand for the Hebrew phrase, “Nes gadol Haiya shaam,” meaning, “A great miracle happened there.” In Israel, by contrast, the dreidel reads “Po” instead of “shaam,” meaning “here.” So in Israel the phrase is, “a great miracle happened here.”

Religious School Kindergarten Consecration Held Â

Kindergarten Consecration in the Religious School was held on October 20 with the Kindergarten families and the entire Religious School in attendance. After the students sang several songs and were blessed by Rabbi Strauss, Rabbi Morgen led the kindergarten parents and grandparents in a parents’ prayer. During the ceremony, each student was presented with a small Torah and Consecration certificate to mark the beginning of their formal Jewish education. They also received a few pieces of candy so that they will associate the Torah with sweetness. After a benediction was given by Rabbi Fort, the Kindergarten families were invited to a reception in the sukkah. The program was coordinated by Music teacher, Marcia Sterling, and Kindergarten teachers, Chaya Lazenga and Shelly Riklin. 15

A MAJOR PIECE OF BAROQUE JEWISH ART RIGHT HERE IN OUR OWN MUSEUM! This is a magnificent, highly elaborate hanukiyah with remarkable silver and gilt filigree from Austria, 1820. Eight lions with hinged heads on a “stage” (perhaps to catch drips) serve as holders for Hanukah lamps. Side candle holders are for Sabbath candles. Tendrils and grill surround an urn with flowers on a pedestal in an archway made of two twisted columns topped by a small urn of flowers similar to the larger centerpiece. Further decorations of heavy filigree of animals and vines can be seen on the front as well as an elaborately etched back.

VOTE MERCAZ IN THE UPCOMING WORLD ZIONIST CONGRESS ELECTION We know that elections have consequences, both in Israel, and here in the United States. However, as Americans, we have very few opportunities to affect change in Israel. This is our chance. As American Jews who care deeply about Israel, we are facing a rare opportunity to make a difference - one that comes only every 5 years. Beginning January 21, 2020, we can vote to elect MERCAZ representatives to the World Zionist Congress, where they will champion the need for a vibrant pluralistic movement in Israel and specifically demonstrate American support for the core values of religious pluralism, democracy and equality for all Jews. This opportunity is fleeting. The Congress meets once only every five years. This is our one opportunity to make a strong showing in this election and help us secure leadership positions and influence critical funding decisions for the future of the Conservative/Masorti Movement. Your vote for MERCAZ, the official slate of the Conservative Movement, couldn’t be more important. Voting begins on January 21, 2020 but you can sign-up now by Pledging to Vote - just go to MERCAZ2020.org or text VOTE to 917-336-1162. Once you take the Pledge – you will get updated information on the campaign and also be reminded when the election begins. We are asking for a strong turnout from Beth Yeshurun and encourage you to sign-up family, friends, colleagues, as well. Finally, if you would like to get more involved in the campaign, please reach out to the Clergy or contact us at votemercaz@mercazusa.org. IN PRIVATE AS IN PUBLIC Whenever a new siddur gets printed, a few things get changed. Most of them are minor, but there is one change in recent prayer books that is very significant, and it has to do with Chanukah...and it’s good to know before it starts. When Rabbi Horwitz we light the candles, the second blessing, traditionally, says that we thank God who did miracles for our ancestors, ba-yamim ha-hem, ba-z’man ha-zeh, in those days in this season. But our books have one small change. It says there, ba-yamim ha-hem u’va-z’man ha-zeh. They added the letter vav to the word ba-z’man. How does that change the meaning? It says, in those days, AND in this era, in our time.

Chanukah is not just a reminder of an ancient miracle. It also reminds us of the miracle of Jewish survival and rebirth and rejuvenation (or, if you prefer, reJEWvenation), and all of this is going on today! Miracles are still happening, and we should be aware of them. And you know what? We can even participate in them. When we are active in Jewish life, when we take actions to support Jewish community, when we take actions to support the State of Israel, we are participating in a miracle.

A Notice About Bereavement Communications Bereavement notices for our synagogue family are distributed with the permission of the deceased’s family, and the timing of these notices is dictated by the family’s request. Of course, each family grieves in its own way, and we are grateful for our congregation’s patience and understanding with different families’ preferences about how their loss is publicized.
