Thank you to our gracious hosts Willow Ridge Country Club in Harrison, New York.

Rabbi Strom was born in northeast Philadelphia and raised in the suburb

of Yardley, in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He is the younger of two sons born to Rabbi Elliot and Susan Strom, brother to Adam. He grew up spending summers at URJ Camp Harlam in the Poconos, through which he made many lifelong friends and met his wife, Tali, and many

weekends throughout the school year with NFTY-PAR. He graduated Pennsbury High School in 1998 and went on to attend Colgate University in Hamilton, New York, where he received a BA in English, graduating magna cum laude in 2002. While matriculating at Colgate, Rabbi Strom became very involved in the men’s a cappella group, the Colgate 13, as well as musical and dramatic theater, appearing in half a dozen productions of various genres. Colgate is also the place where Rabbi Strom discovered his aspirations for a career in the congregational rabbinate, as well as where he learned to tolerate the cold and love the beautiful game of hockey. In the year following his graduation, while applying to the rabbinical school of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, he worked at Congregation Beth Chaim in Princeton Junction, New Jersey as the assistant director of the religious school and youth group advisor. He began his rabbinical studies in the summer of 2003 in Jerusalem, and returned the following spring to begin studying at the New York campus. He served Temple Beth El in Chappaqua as a rabbinic intern for that year, and also began to teach at Temple Shaaray Tefila of New York City, where he would eventually become a rabbinic intern. Upon his ordination from HUC-JIR in 2008, Rabbi Strom went on to serve Shaaray Tefila as their assistant and then associate rabbi until the spring of 2015.

Rabbi Strom and Tali were married just weeks after his rabbinic ordination

in 2008, and are now blessed with sons Jonah, born in May 2010, and Gabriel, born in December 2013. Rabbi Strom and his family live in Chappaqua, NY.

Dear Shelly and Bernie,

It is quite remarkable to think about how our lives have become so

connected and intertwined after such a short period of time. From my first interview over Skype when Shelly and I met, to the various visits getting to know you and the leadership better, to rejoicing for your growing family, welcoming Grayson and Skylar into the Covenant of the Jewish people—there couldn’t possibly be a better family with which to share this celebration of the future of B’nai Yisrael.

For decades you have made the congregation a focal point in your lives,

centered around commitment, tradition, and Jewish values; a foundation upon which your beautiful family continues to grow. And truly your relationship with CBY is reciprocal: the love you have shown us all is repaid in kind, and then many, many times over, as is evident from the outpouring of affection for you this evening. From the bottom of my heart, thank you both so much for being pillars of our community and for your tireless dedication to strengthening our congregation.

I pray that, even as we have had much cause for celebration already, we will

have many, many more simchas to enjoy together, in the lives of our families and in the life of the congregation.

May we go from strength to strength! Mazal tov!

Yours, Josh, Tali, Jonah, and Gabriel

Shelly W. Jacob

From 1998 to 2000, served as President of Congregation B’nai Yisrael after six years on the Board of Trustees and having served as Vice President and Treasurer. Many of her years at CBY were spent planning and fundraising for our current home, and she feels lucky to have been President during the construction and dedication of our new building. She can honestly say it was the highlight of her years of service, when she was able to preside over its dedication. Shelly joined our congregation when she first moved to Pleasantville, and felt at home immediately. Her decision to become involved began as a desire to learn more about “what it means to be Jewish,” and a need to impart Jewish ideas, values and culture to her family. She continues to be involved in synagogue life by working on special projects for the congregation, and most recently chaired the interim search committee for Rabbi Katz and the search committee for Rabbi Strom. She enjoys taking advantage of CBY’s many religious, educational and cultural offerings.

After marrying her high school sweetheart, and a short career on Wall Street, Shelly decided to become a full time stay at home mother after the birth of her second daughter. She and Bernie have three daughters, three sons-in-law and five beautiful grandchildren. She loves spending time with all of them, and is so grateful that they can be such an integral part of her life. She has always said that she enjoyed every minute of raising her children, and is thrilled that she can now have that same pleasure watching her grandchildren grow. Shelly enjoys spending her free time in the company of good friends, her family and two dogs. She is always ready for an adventure, and enjoys entertaining, traveling, playing golf, reading and exercise. Lastly, Shelly is so thankful to Bernie, with whom she has built a life she could never have imagined.

Bernard J. Jacob

is a Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for the US and International businesses of Prudential Financial, Inc. His career at Prudential has spanned over 14 years, where he has also served as Treasurer. Prior to joining Prudential, Bernie served as Chief Financial Officer for 2 other investment firms, and as Senior Vice President and Group Executive of Global Mergers and Acquisitions at The Chase Manhattan Bank N.A. He currently sits on the Accenture Insurance Executive Advisory Board and IBM North American Client Counsel. Bernie is a graduate of Brandeis University and holds an M.A. in International Affairs in Foreign Policy and Finance from The School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University. He is lucky to call himself Papa to five wonderful grandchildren, and Dad to three daughters and sons-in-law. They bring him endless pride and pleasure, and he points to his family as his greatest accomplishment. He is thrilled to share his love of sports and traveling with them. Bernie is an avid golfer, and has already bought golf clubs for his young grandchildren! As a strong supporter of Congregation B’nai Yisrael, he is a part of the Long Range Planning Committee, and previously a member of the Strategic Planning Committee. He is proud to be a part of the congregation’s past, present and future, and appreciates the role CBY plays in both our local and larger community.

Dear Rabbi Strom,

We are so happy to be sharing this honor with you. It has been our pleasure

to get to know you this past year, to share worship, study and life cycle events with you. Your love of Judaism is inspiring and infectious, and is felt by all our members, longstanding and new, seniors and children, our staff and students alike.

Our synagogue is filled with a renewed sense of optimism and enthusiasm

as you help shepherd in a new chapter in our history. We appreciate your efforts and initiatives thus far, and know that our future will be filled with vibrancy and meaning as we explore our Jewish world together.

We speak for the entire congregation when we say we are thankful that you

have chosen Congregation B’nai Yisrael as your home, and couldn’t be prouder to call you our Rabbi. Mazel Tov, Shelly and Bernie

Honoring you at this Gala is a very long time coming. Growing up, talks of “Temple meetings, construction schedules, Hebrew school, Mitzvah projects, and Shabbat onegs were a constant in our house.
