Faculty Spotlight Greg Bowden, Ed. D.

Director, Organizational Change and Administration Program (Online)

I have always been interested in leadership and how some people seem better at it than others. In my years of teaching, I have worked at each level in K-12 education and post-secondary education, and I have always relished my work with students and enjoyed the transfer of knowledge in teaching. However, my passion is supporting teachers to be effective in the classroom. When I decided to pursue a position in K-12 school administration, I was fortunate to enroll in the first Leadership Studies program in the country and study with a leading author in the field, Dr. Joseph Rost, author of “Leadership for the 21st Century.” The program completely changed my concept of effective interdisciplinary leadership and shaped who I was as a leader during the 18 years I served as an administrator in public schools. Effective teaching requires so many skills, and leading teachers requires even more. Throughout my career, I have been interested in the pedagogy of teaching and learning. As my career progressed and I transitioned to higher education, I focused on learning andragogy principles. I found that one key to successful online adult learning strategies is for students to use the process of metacognition. Indeed, addressing how this connects to the teaching and learning of effective leadership among adults is another theme. The need for engaged followership and knowing how to support effective collaboration is commensurate with leadership. Finally, I am interested in the development of online doctoral students – and how university faculty and staff can best help them. All of these are outshoots of my work here at CBU.
