EDUCATION about and PREVENTION against gender and relationship violence ANNUAL REPORT 2018

OUR MISSION

WORKING THROUGH ALLIES

Our mission is to provide quality educational programming that prevents gender and relationship violence. Working through secondary schools, colleges and universities and community-based organizations and agencies, Jana’s Campaign delivers specialized prevention strategies and curricula designed to prevent violence, build healthy relationships and create new social norms.

Our direct work with students and citizens is possible by partnering with and through allies. Our prevention model is based on delivering our prevention education through secondary schools, colleges and universities and community-based organizations. By building strong and collaborative partnerships with these local entities, we can better leverage resources, build on each other’s strengths and talents and enhance organizational capacity that encourages sustainability.

ABOUT JANA

On July 3, 2008, Jana Lynne Mackey lost her life to violence perpetrated by an exboyfriend in Lawrence, Kansas. The 25-year-old University of Kansas law student was an advocate for women’s rights and spent years volunteering to aid victims of sexual assault and domestic violence. As a passionate social and women’s activist, Jana fought for equality and social justice at every turn. Described as “honey on steel,” Jana Mackey was the kind of woman that inspired others. She inspired through her words, her song, her actions. In March 2008, Jana attended a Women’s Leadership Conference, where she was asked to prioritize her top personal values. Jana identified her most important value as “equality for all persons,” and her second most important as “the courage to stand up for her own beliefs.” Jana ‘walked’ her values. With these values, coupled with her years of activism and political experience, Jana believed a law degree was the next step in her journey to become the most effective advocate possible for women and other underrepresented groups.

Jana was beautiful, intelligent and kind. She was an advocate, a friend, a sister, a daughter. She was magnetic. She was a bright spot on an ordinary day. Jana was a hero. Jana is missed.

A LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR A decade without Jana. What a powerful void she leaves, and though tremendous work has been accomplished in her honor, we cannot help but ponder all she might have accomplished on her own in these past ten years. When I joined Jana’s Campaign in early 2018, I could not quite comprehend the massive impact this organization has each year. The passion co-founders Christie and Curt Brungardt put into this work, into making our world a safer place, is awe-inspiring. The dedication of each team member to put forth the best possible programming and to tackle each challenge with vigor and determination amazes me each and every day. The treasures all of you invest in Jana’s Campaign make this labor of love possible. As a true believer in the #PowerofPrevention, the investment into prevention work and our youth resonates deeply with me. Education continues to be the key to our prevention model. Using education to change and improve attitudes, behaviors, interactions and ultimately social norms, we can end gender and relationship violence together. I am humbled and proud to be a part of this organization and this team. I look forward to the continued impact and growth we will have in the coming year. The successes and differences we make are made possible by all of you – our friends, family, supporters, donors and partners of Jana’s Campaign. Thank you for all you do and we look forward to the next decade of making a difference in Jana’s honor.

PROGRAM FOCUS AREAS Secondary Education We are dedicated to helping schools and youth organizations reduce gender and relationship violence by promoting healthy relationship behaviors to ultimately create a culture of strong respect among adolescents. We utilize prevention programs, including curricular and co-curricular activities, to make teen dating violence less likely to occur. Working directly with middle and high schools, we offer tailor-made, multilevel education and prevention programs to meet the specific needs of each school. In 2018, we continued to grow our footprint throughout Kansas, Colorado and Nebraska. As of this year, in Kansas we have provided prevention programming in 84% of the 105 counties. This year alone, our team provided 279 presentations and workshops. Since 2013, we have impacted 542 schools and 59,534 students in middle and high schools across nine states. Higher Education We believe colleges and universities can and should do more to prevent gender and relationship violence. We work to provide higher education institutions with training opportunities and resources to improve their prevention and response efforts to sexual assault, dating violence and stalking on campus. In 2018, we added another regional Campus Safety Summit, increasing to four total summits. In partnership with the Conference on Crimes Against Women (CCAW), we held our newest summit in Dallas, Texas in April. CCAW draws in over 2,500 attendees who all learned of Jana’s Campaign and over 800 people attended our Campus Safety Summit specific sessions in 2018. In April, we also hosted the Midwest Campus Safety Summit at Ball State University sharing our prevention education with nearly 80 people from 10 states and 32 different colleges and organizations. Jana’s Campaign hosted the Rocky Mountain Campus Safety Summit at Colorado College in June, reaching over 70 people from eight states and 33 colleges and organizations. Our longest running summit, the 6th Annual Heartland Campus Safety Summit, was hosted at Johnson County Community College in November. We welcomed almost 200 attendees from nine states and 64 different colleges and organizations. We also have the pleasure of working directly with students on college and university campuses. In addition to our prevention education, we provide meaningful and engaging opportunities for students to volunteer and assist in raising awareness of these important issues. Activities include walks or marches, participation in art shows, and putting together information packets to distribute to middle and high school students. States Impacted by our 2018 Summits

Community Education We believe in the power of speaking out about the issues of gender and relationship violence. In partnership with community organizations, we work to provide community-wide educational prevention programs that reduce violence. Our efforts also include mobilizing others to volunteer and make a difference in their communities. Jana’s Campaign staff and board members were actively involved in several community events. From speaking to local civic groups like Kiwanis and the Chamber of Commerce, to our advocacy related work at the Kansas Capitol and Women’s March, to art exhibits like the “What Were You Wearing” display and the Hays Arts Council Winter Art Walk; the team kept busy engaging community members from all walks of life to learn more about ending domestic and dating violence, sexual violence and stalking.

2018 HIGHLIGHTS

The event focused on bringing awareness to the issues of gender and relationship violence and to raise funds to help support our prevention education efforts. Partnership with the Conference on Crimes Against Women Solidified Jana’s Campaign hosted our newest Campus Safety Summit in conjunction with the Conference on Crimes Against Women in Dallas, Texas in April. One of the largest and most successful conferences bringing together law enforcement, prosecutors, advocates and others to learn more about ending gender and relationship violence, our summit brought more college and university faculty, staff and students to the event. Jana’s Campaign Receives Nebraska Community Partnership Award The Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) Teachers of Nebraska awarded Jana’s Campaign the 2018 Partnership Award at their annual Recognition Banquet. This award recognizes individuals or groups who help support FCS Education in Nebraska schools. Empty Place at the Table Gala Shatters Fundraising Goal Hosting over 200 attendees at the annual fundraising gala in Hays, Kansas, Jana’s Campaign raised more than $70,000, doubling the amount raised in 2017. Secondary Education Program Receives National Recognition Rural Health Models and Innovations, a national collection of successful rural health programs and interventions maintained by the Rural Health Information Hub featured our teen gender violence and prevention programming. Local Accounting Firm Conducts Independent Financial Audit Brungardt Hower Ward Elliott & Pfeifer L.C. conducted a full, independent financial audit for Jana’s Campaign. An external financial audit is an intensive examination of the organization’s systems and records to provide the highest level of assurances to donors. The accounting firm issued a favorable report of an unqualified audit indicating all financial statements are presented fairly and without material misstatements. National Office in Hays, KS Becomes the Sole Office Location While education efforts continue to grow all across Kansas, Nebraska and Colorado, the board of directors determined the organization would be better poised to grow by consolidating all staff members in the National Office located in Hays, Kansas. Outside Evaluation of Jana’s Campaign Data Collection Complete Independent evaluators reviewed and assessed the data collected through our prevention education efforts, enabling Jana’s Campaign to further articulate the goals and impact of the organization.

WE BELIEVE........ gender and relationship violence is preventable. Violence is learned; therefore, it can be addressed with effective education. educating teens, young adults, and community members about healthy and unhealthy relationship behaviors can stop the violence before it begins. in the power of the story, and by sharing the story of Jana’s life and the story of her death we can move people to action. by working with thousands of activists around the world, this social disease can be eradicated in a single generation.
