2018 ANNUAL GIVING PROGRAM Annually, Jana’s Campaign seeks financial gifts and donations from our friends and supporters to provide the needed resources for us to serve our mission. Our financial foundation is built on (1) private gifts and donations, (2) corporate support and private foundations and (3) our own earned income. Again, in 2018, we hope to raise $75,000 from private individual donors. All donations, large and small, are highly appreciated and go directly to our violence prevention programming. Jana’s Campaign is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization and contributions are tax deductible under section 170 of the Internal Revenue Service.

Jana’s Campaign is a national education and violence prevention organization with the single mission of reducing gender and relationship violence. In honor of the late Jana Mackey and other victims and survivors of gender and relationship violence, Jana’s Campaign delivers comprehensive educational programming that prevents domestic and dating violence, sexual violence and stalking.

Our mission is to provide quality educational programming that prevents gender and relationship violence. Working with secondary schools, colleges and universities, and community-based organizations and agencies, Jana’s Campaign delivers specialized and comprehensive prevention programming that is designed to prevent violence, build healthy relationships and create new social norms.

Our direct work with students and citizens is possible by partnering with and through allies. Our prevention model is based on delivering our prevention work through secondary schools, colleges and universities and community-based organizations. By building strong and collaborative partnerships with these local entities, we can better leverage resources, build on each other’s strengths and talents, and enhance organizational capacity that encourages sustainability.

We believe in the power of speaking out about the issues of gender and relationship violence. In partnership with community organizations, we work to provide community-wide educational and prevention programs that reduce violence. Our efforts also include mobilizing others to volunteer and make a difference in their communities. This past year, staff and board members were directly involved in several major community educational activities. This included local community forums, as well as regional and national conferences. Most notably was our work with the Colorado Action Conference, Mercy College Medical Center/St. Elizabeth Hospital of Youngstown, Ohio, the Kansas Court Services Annual Conference and Muscogee Creek Nation of Okmulgee, Oklahoma.

2017 HIGHLIGHTS Jana’s Campaign receives national award In January, we received the national ‘commended program award’ by the Mary Byron Project (Louisville, KY) for our work in teen dating violence prevention. On July 3, 2008, Jana Mackey lost her life to violence perpetrated by an ex-boyfriend in Lawrence, Kansas. The 25-year-old University of Kansas law student was an advocate for women’s rights and had spent years volunteering to aid victims of sexual assault and domestic violence. Jana represented the new generation of American feminists. As a passionate social and women’s activist, Jana fought for equality and social justice at every turn. Described as “honey on steel,” Jana Lynne Mackey was the kind of woman that inspired others. She inspired through her words, her song, and her actions. Jana was beautiful, intelligent and kind. She was an advocate, a friend, a sister, and a daughter. She was magnetic. She was a bright spot in an ordinary day. She was a hero.

We exceeded our fundraising goal with the IMPACT Project This past October, we completed our $500,000 national fundraising campaign. We raised $557,955 in 22 short months.

Our secondary education program grows in Colorado and Nebraska In 2017, our work with middle and high schools in the states of Colorado and Nebraska have more than doubled.

Jana’s Campaign hosts the first Midwest Campus Safety Summit

As we reflect over the eight plus years of Jana’s Campaign, we are proud of what we have built in honor of Jana. With the help of many of you, we have created an impactful organization that works to prevent gender and relationship violence. While our educational programs and activities have evolved over time, our goal has always remained the same: to reduce and eliminate gender and relationship violence. What makes Jana’s Campaign unique and different is that we specialize solely in the area of education and gender violence prevention. This single-focused mission is designed to have the greatest societal impact. This past year, we published a detailed document on the impact of our work. The 2013-2016 Assessment Data and Impact Report illustrated the scale and scope of our work, but most importantly, it also showed that we are having the impact desired. Simply, we believe in the “power of education.” We believe that education is the most powerful instrument of social change and development. We believe that through education, we can change and improve social attitudes, behaviors, customs, interactions, relations and social norms. We are a passionate team of violence prevention educators who are dedicated to empowering others for social change. Finally, we again want to thank each of you who continue to support us - month after month and year after year. Collectively, WE ARE BUILDING A SAFER WORLD. Warmly, Curt and Christie Brungardt

Last April, we hosted the first Midwest Campus Safety Summit on the campus of Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. Over 100 attendees representing 9 states participated.

We added two new full time educators to our staff In the spring of 2017, we added two full time Education and Prevention Specialists to our staff. Kaiti Dinges, is housed in our Hays, KS office, and Tiffani Clark works out of our Colorado Springs, CO office.

Jana’s Campaign pilots new ‘Athletes as Leaders’ program We are proud to announce that we piloted a new national educational program designed for high school female student athletes. The program is being implemented at Hays High School (KS).

Published The 2013-2016 Assessment Data and Impact Report In April of 2017, we completed and published The Assessment Data and Impact Report, a comprehensive summary of all of our educational activities for the 2013-2016 calendar year. This report illustrated program outputs, program outcomes and the impact of our programming.

Secondary Education work now includes bystander intervention trainings This past year, we expanded our secondary education work to include bystander intervention trainings. National evaluation data illustrates the tremendous impact of this educational strategy in reducing abuse and violence.

PROGRAM FOCUS AREAS

OUR TEAM Board Officers Heather Lambert, Ph.D., Lincoln, NE (President)

We believe that one of the most effective ways to prevent gender and relationship violence is to educate adolescents about what constitutes a healthy vs. unhealthy relationship at the very time they begin to enter their first relationships. We can ultimately reduce the instances of gender and relationship violence by empowering young people to engage in healthy and supportive relationships and to create a strong culture of respect. Our goal as prevention educators is to stop the violence before it begins. Over this past year, we have continued our efforts in Kansas, but the scope of our work is expanding further into Nebraska and Colorado. In 2017, we worked with 201 middle and high schools and impacted nearly 20,000 students! Using our comprehensive model, we offer schools tailor-made, multilevel education and prevention programs that meets the specific needs of each individual school.

Kari Ann Rinker, MPA, Wichita, KS This past year, our higher education work has grown immensely. Now more than ever, we believe that colleges and universities can and should do more to prevent gender and relationship violence. Our programming provides higher education institutions with the training and resources they need to improve both their prevention and response efforts to sexual violence, partner violence and stalking on campus. For the first time in 2017, we implemented three regional campus safety summits. In April, we hosted our newest summit, the Midwest Campus Safety Summit at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. This inaugural summit had over 100 participants from nine states and 34 colleges and universities. On June 7-8, we hosted the Rocky Mountain Campus Safety Summit on the campus of Colorado College, in Colorado Springs. This 2nd annual summit had over 100 attendees, representing nine states and 40 colleges and universities. We finished the year with the 5th annual Heartland Campus Safety Summit on November 15-16 in Overland Park, Kansas on the campus of Johnson County Community College. This longest running summit, hosted nearly 200 participants from 12 states and 76 different colleges and universities.
