On August 25, 1988, a baby boy was born into the Batchelor family. The father, who already had a daughter, was exhilarated to finally have a son. After he finally got his emotions in check, his wife looked up to him and he knew exactly what she was thinking, “Now Keith,” in a deep southern accent,” what do you want to name him?” The proud new father stood there and begin to ponder. The name Corey had been brought up previously during a dinner discussion, but he knew exactly what he wanted to name him, but would she go for it. How could he explain this wonderful name, and get her to go with it. Hesitantly he began to explain his favorite television show, “The Andy Griffith show.” He told her of the impact it had made on him as a child, and how he always looked forward to watching it before

dinner with his family. After his explanation, the mother, still holding the baby boy figured he was talking about the main character Andy, however she was startled when he instead murmured, “Opey.” He stood there, hesitantly awaiting her answer. She looked down at her new born baby boy and said, “Okay. Under one condition. His middle name will be my maiden name. Bobo.”The newly crowned father stood there and thought. What a name! However, what a name. Not wanting his son to constantly be the but of childrens jokes, he looked at his wife and said, “Well not that I think of it, I think I like Corey.”

A MERICAN I CONS OVERVIEW America strives off icons and heros such as the Founding Fathers and our Presidents. People of this great nation look up to those of the past, for inspiration, guidance, and intelligence. Often times these aspects are founded through memorable quotes. A quote is to repeat, often, a passage or phrase from a book, speech, movie, or article made by a notable individual ranging from people of fame, to a persons personal experience.

CHALLENGE Quotes are one of the most powerful and inspirational aspects of human nature. A quote can inspire millions and define era’s. Throughout American history, many American Icons have inspired people through their intellectual words of wisdom. They also, however, have said some very unintelligent and almost humorous things. American Icons is a series that will highlight, constructively, quotes from famous Americans, primarily political persons, that are not necessarily proper for them to have been cited saying.

SOLUTION Humorous quotes by famous Americans such as the Founding Fathers and Presidents of the past were researched. Quotes that poke playful fun at the Icon who said them, were then translated into humorous portraits that are both witty and intelligent. Some of the images were made into silk screen prints, while others are digital files. The silk screen prints will be showcased at the Flagler BA Art show in April 2011.

M ADRID 2 0 2 0 OVERVIEW The Olympic Games are a major international sports event, featuring thousands of athletes from all over the world. The Olympic Games started in Ancient Greece, with representatives from the different Greek city-states and Kingdoms. All wars and disagreements were set aside during the event, so that the athletes could compete with focus and determination. The first Olympic Games held under the IOC, International Olympic Committee, were held in Athens, Greece in 1896. All Games held from this date onward are considered to be the Modern Olympic Games. The Games are held every two years, alternating with summer and winter events. Today there are Summer, Winter, Special, and Youth Olympic Games under the IOC.

CHALLENGE To obtain the Olympic Games, a city must run a candidacy, provide that their city is able to contain such a massive event, and lastly be voted upon by the IOC. For the 2020 Olympic Games candidacy Madrid, Spain has chosen to go with a new and totally different approach. In the past, their campaign has been very straight forward. To win the vote for the 2020 Olympic Games, Madrid's campaign will have to include a symbol of togetherness, vibrant colors, and a form of which will not fall to others.

SOLUTION A cube is a 6 sided figure that cannot fall. It is tightly compact and can stand together with several other cubes. In some cases each cube builds upon the others to make a larger cube. This symbolic shape was chosen to represent the logo for the candidacy. The cube is built up with several other cubes, which are made up of vibrant colors. The candidacy slogan needed to show that the cube stands for bringing everyone together. “Vamos Por El Oro, Juntos,” which translates to “Lets go for the gold, Together,” was chosen as the campaign slogan to motivate people to bring the gold of the Olympic Games to Madrid. Posters were placed in airports, bus stops, on city buildings, and in subways. Lastly, as a promotional piece, a cube box set in the form of the logo will be handed out at rallies. The promo includes a T-shirt, poster, and transparent cube.

I M PA S T O M A G A Z I N E OVERVIEW In painting, impasto refers to a build up of layers, usually in painting. The ideology behind the magazine, Impasto, comes from a quote, “Good artist copy, great artist steal, by Pablo Picasso. Each edition of the magazine features four artist from past and present. The columns focus on different styles of current popular art.

CHALLENGE Create a magazine for people who have developed an opinion of what art is or is not. The featured artist should be in question by the public of their skills and/or talent. Articles need to showcase the artist through interviews, biographies, or personal written accounts.

SOLUTION Impasto magazine is printed for the critic and optimist. The magazine strives to achieve a non biased approach. Each of the articles feature accepted and unaccepted artist among the art world. Most of the featured artist have become popular due to a build up in media, or through references from influential people. Every magazine will have 5 categories for columns: Paint, Print, Illustration, Sculpture, and Design.

A NIMAL F ARM B OX S ET OVERVIEW Animal Farm is an allegorical novel written by English author George Orwell. It was published on August 17, 1945 in England. The story is a critic of Joseph Stalin’s rule over the former Soviet Union. Orwell was inspired to write the book after he saw first hand accounts of Communism during the Spanish Civil War. The story reflects on the corruption of Soviet revolution leaders, through a rebellion by the animals on Manor Farm.

CHALLENGE Along with the book, there are also two film adaptations of George Orwell’s story. However, they are hard to find and not widely sold in commercial stores. Animal Farm is also an older book, and needs a new modern look, or re-release. A package needs to be designed that is appealing to today's generation, include a new way to read the book, and contain the two movie adaptations.

SOLUTION The Animal Farm book has been divided into three different sections. Each booklet features a different color and texture for the packaging; smooth burgundy, scaled silver, and riveted white. The packaging is a black textured box with a die cut of a man transformed into a pig, or a pig transformed into a man. This was inspired by a quote in the story, “The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.” The DVD package has a black scaled texture and includes both versions of the film, as well as a read aloud version of the book.

M OLECULE F ONT OVERVIEW Molecule’s were developed, in theory, as early as ancient Greece. A molecule is an electrically neutral group of at least two atoms held together by a covalent chemical bond. They differ from ions by their electrical charges. A water molecule is made up of two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen (H2O).

CHALLENGE A new typeface will be based off of molecule illustrations, which are primarily drawn up with various sizes of circles. The appearance needs to be bold and be adaptable to several different solutions. Some of these adaptations will include overlapping, stencil uses, and conversion to three dimensional models.

SOLUTION Molecule starts as one large circle, and then two smaller circles to imitate that of a water molecule illustration. A letters complexity determines how many, and what sizes the individual circles should be. The circles not only build up the letters, but are also used to cut some areas out. When the kerning is placed closer together, a stencil, or clipping mask, can easily be adapted to give the letters texture, and create an image as a whole. To convert the letters to appear three dimensionally, a gradient and opacity mask can easily be added to make it appear as if the letters are floating off the flat surface.

C HARACTER D ESIGN OVERVIEW Comic books hit America around 1934 with the publication of Famous Funnies. Other than American Comics, British and Japanese Manga Comics, are the current top manufacturers of comic books. Types of comic books include traditional, underground, alternative, graphic novels, and newspaper comics. Comic books usually feature super heros and villains, or in the simplest forms an antagonist and protagonist.

CHALLENGE Create a book that showcases a variety of characters for Malevolent Studios, a new up and coming comic book company. The book needs a reflective cover, showcase a variety of new characters, and give a brief bio on each character. The book will be used to try and get writers and artist to be inspired by the initial designs, and then help Malevolent Studios create new comics based on the character designs.

SOLUTION An 8”x9” book was spiral bounded, with semi-reflective surface. The Malevolent Logo, and cross style branding was placed on the cover, with “Character Design” as the title. This book can be sent to renown artist, to get them inspired to create new comics for Malevolent. The characters chosen range over several different illustration styles. Seven character designs are placed in the book, each with a four page spread. The opening spread gives a simple synopsis of the characters story line. The following spread showcases the character in a variety of colors or shows how the character was drawn. A quick bio on the person is also included with features such as name, place of birth, and abilities.

USID OVERVIEW After the age of 16, and in some cases even before, most American citizens have to or choose to carry some form of identification. Types of identification include drivers licenses, birth certificates, Passports, and ID cards. A persons ID may be used for purchasing alcohol, confirming who a person is, or for leaving the country and later re-entering.

CHALLENGE Of all 50 states in the US, none have the same form of identification. Some states even Have several designs for each of their ID cards. Each states form of ID varies in style, card consistency, and color. A variety of identification cards results in consumption of underage drinking, false identification, and confusion for law enforcement. A passport is rather large and has several pages in it, making it difficult to carry around on a regular basis. Drivers licenses are the most common form of identification, but can easily replicated and often hard to see inside a persons wallet where they often get stuck.

SOLUTION USID, or United States Identification, is the new system for aiding in identifying a person. US citizens will receive their new USID in the mail. It will be a small tag that fits easily onto a set of keys, but could also fit in a wallet or onto a necklace. On the front of the USID card is a persons portrait, DOB, and scannable data chip. On the back is that persons state and flag, USID number, persons name and signature, and a few key facts about the person including height and eye color. Once received, the recipient can go online to their new account with their activation code and begin to add or take away information. To give citizens the feel that the government is not taking over their lives, the information placed on the USID is up to the user. Items such as DOB, name, address, ect. will be constant, however things such as emergency contacts and insurance may be edited. To help law enforcement or medical needs, the scanner will be able to be used and information about the persons will be brought up.

P APER P UZZLE OVERVIEW Origami is the traditional Japanese art form of folding paper. It started around the 17th century AD and became widely popular in the mid - 1900s. Today it is considered a modern art form in which the goal is to turn a flat sheet of material, usually paper, into a finished sculpture by folding. Traditionally the use of cutting and glue are not used in origami. Typography has its origins in ancient Greece between 1850 and 1600 BC. It is the art and technique of arranging type into designs and/or forms. It is widely popular in Graphic Design and used buy inspirational designers such as Stefan Sagmeister and David Carson.

CHALLENGE Paper Puzzle set out to combine two traditional art forms and set them into a modern activity. The overall goal was to create a usable and visually pleasing typeface from folded paper. First, each letter of the alphabet was to be created by using 8” x 8” sheets of paper. Due to the complexity of the alphabet and for visual aesthetic cutting was decided to be aloud. This also gets Paper Puzzle away from being considered Origami, and instead a fun activity for creating letter forms. Also, each form needed to stand upright and not lay flat on the surface to get a sculptural feel. Second, the finished folded paper product was to be translated into a usable typeface. The font could then be dually used with the paper forms.

SOLUTION Each letter was created by folding and cutting the 8” x 8” pieces of paper. From the finished sculptures, a typeface was developed to imitate each letter form. The folds and cuts from the original sculptures were translated into colorful grids so that the user knows where to fold the paper. If a cut is necessary, a dotted line is placed to indicate the user to cut. After each grid was completed, they were mixed and placed into the packaging. The packaging is a wooden box that appears to be complex to open, however it easily opens up. From the final letter forms, a digital version of each letter form was translated into a usable type face. This typeface can be downloaded online. The final product consists of a box package with two of each letter to solve and a password to print off more letters online

M ACRO P HOTOGRAPHY OVERVIEW Macro Photography is a form of photography where the subject matter is usually up close images of very small objects. The subject in the photo’s usually appears to be life size. A limited depth of field usually enhances the photograph, making the viewer focus on the most important aspects of the subject matter. Model train sets often use small scale figurines to add people to their train set up. The scale of the figures range in sizes including 0, N, HO.

CHALLENGE Set up small scale instillations using N scale train figurines, to showcase macro photography skills. They need to be humorous and interesting arrangements. Instillations can range from outdoors settings, to studio set ups.

SOLUTION The train figures are set up, indoor and outdoor, around St. Augustine preforming a variety of tasks. The first series are figurines performing work or jobs. These jobs range from cleaning up things, to delivering items. The second series are people doing a variety of common everyday events. Lastly, some of the figures were set up in a studio to interact with a regular sized Coca-cola, and the new mini Coke can.

U NCLEAR OVERVIEW A nuclear weapon is an explosive bomb that uses the force of nuclear reactions, with either fission or a combination of fission and fusion to create a devastating explosion. The United States is the only country to have used nuclear weapons offensively. During World War II they dropped two nuclear bombs onto Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan. To this day, countries still test bombs on testing sites, and over the oceans. In 1985 there were over 600,000 nuclear weapons in circulation. Today nine nations still have posession of active nuclear weapons.

CHALLENGE The use of nuclear weapons could easily end the world. The scarce of using nuclear weapons was at its peak during the Cold War between the United States and former Soviet Union, during the 1980s. The generation who grew up during that time period paid close attention to the news, and were familiar with a bomb shelter. Todays generation is widely known to neglect world news, and have been nullified to nuclear weapons because of video games and movies. To re-introduce the very real threat of nuclear war, an ad campaign will reach out to these youths and to those who neglect to watch the news. The campaign will need to be seen on posters in populated cities, and be created by the public to get them involved.

SOLUTION Since todays generation is unclear about nuclear war, the term ‘unclear’ was chosen as the logo. It is also nuclear with the n and u switched. Comic book heros and villains were chosen as the subject matter to appeal to the generated target audience. When the viewer sees a collage of his or her favorite super hero’s, they will be intrigued to read further and figure out what is being advertised. The connection was made that if the world were attacked by aliens, Superman could save us, however when the world is attacked by a nuclear war head, who will we call upon? Thus the tag line, “We don’t need a superhero, we just need someone to care!” The use of ‘Someone’ is to individualize the viewer and motivate them. The posters were hung in major cities, and play on digital screens to filter through fan made collages. A web site is set up to let fans sign up to learn more information on nuclear weapons, and to let fans create their own collages to be posted.

Since 1985 there has been an estimated 40% decrease in Nuclear Bombs. That’s almost half gone, now lets finish the job! to find out more information visit www.unclear.com

R ING OVERVIEW Ring of Fire is a song that was recorded on March 25, 1963, by singer and songwriter Johnny Cash. It was the most popular song of his career, and stayed number one on the charts for seven weeks. In June of 2010, the Ring of Fire: Honky Tonk bar opened in Saint Augustine, FL. Owner Danny Harmon has since expanded the building, and has made it a premier spot for late night life in Saint Augustine. On April 5, 2011, the bar acquired their liquor license.

OF

F IRE

CHALLENGE With the Ring of Fire bar acquiring a liquor license, a huge celebration was to ensue. To celebrate, an event title, posters, merchandise, and a house rum design were to be developed. The poster needed to resemble an old western type poster. Most of the names for the drink specials are ironic and witty, so the theme of the designed items needed to stay within this style.

SOLUTION The event was named, “The Liquor License Ho Down.” A typographic poster, using old western typefaces was designed. These are also translated into smaller flyers to place in local businesses. The merchandise for the even included cowboy hats, and denim button up shirts. The house rum was named, “Liqa ya awn lady up” as a reference to a humorous saying amongst the regulars at the bar.

V I S UA L D I S E A S E OVERVIEW During mid 2010, a concept was developed that there was an epidemic amongst design. Design can either be good or bad, and it is never finished. Since it is never finished, it can always be improved, and thus the Visual Disease was created to help designers rage war on bad design.

CHALLENGE To help cure the world of bad design, Visual Disease created weapons made out of helvetica punctuation marks. The helvetica typeface was chosen since it is regarded as one of the greatest typefaces of all time, and it is very visually pleasing. The goal is to get the name of Visual Disease known to the public, and then have designers or fans begin to paste them onto designs.

SOLUTION After developing a wide range of weapons out of type, the weapons were posted online at www.visualdisease.com. Over 400 people visited the site on the second day of the blogs launch. The twitter account had over 17 followers within its first hour. The web site is currently up and running and still generating a large number of hits daily. Shirts and stickers are in the making and Visual Disease is an ongoing project amongst creator Corey Batchelor and partner Jennifer Griner.
