GAZETTE REPORTER Hundreds of people are killed or maimed in domestic fires across the country each year. To help people prepare for winter, Chubb has put together a 12-point guide to fire safety: z Fit a fire or smoke alarm. Test your alarm and change the batteries at least once a year. z Never leave fires, candles or any form of naked flame unattended in the home unattended and ensure candles are secure before lighting. z Never leave children unsupervised around fires, candles or matches unsupervised. z Keep a fire blanket and suitable extinguisher handy in the kitchen. A fire blanket is able to smother flames either on a person or on a stove. z Avoid wearing baggy

clothes while cooking and around heaters, candles and open fires. z Never smoke in bed and ensure all cigarettes and candles are extinguished before retiring for the night. zIn case of fire, have a plan. Make sure you have more than one escape route should your route become blocked. z If you have gas, oil or coalburning appliances be aware of carbon monoxide. Ensure your home is properly ventilated and equipment is regularly serviced and maintained. z Turn off portable heaters, as well as gas and electric fires before going to bed. z If you have an open fire make sure the fire guard is secure and in place. zKeep heaters away from furniture and curtains.

BEARING GIFTS: Reservist constable Warren Saitowitz and Captain Maidi Mfopa donate 80 yo-yos, 200 diaries, 300 colouring books and 100 lunch boxes to the Nokuthula special school on behalf of the Bramley police and reservist unit.

Fly the flag with caution GAZETTE REPORTER Vehicles bearing a South African flag as well as one or more from another country are being followed home by thieves. The properties where vehicle owners reside are being targeted for house robberies in the belief that they are

hosting visitors from other countries and thus contain valuables and large amounts of cash. Captain Cynthia Magoai of Parkview police advised residents, particularly bed and breakfast owners, to be on high alert when driving home.
