HOW DOES A 4-H MEMBER COME UP WITH THEIR PRICE?

Typically 4-H members research current market prices, as well as retail grocery store prices. They usually consult with a mentor, which could be a parent, a producer they look up to, or their 4-H leader. Using these factors, they calculate a price on their home-raised beef or lamb that is a fair premium for the quality meat they have raised.

WHAT ELSE DOES 4-H PROMOTE?

The 4-H program is designed to foster confidence, competency, and hands-on skill development in youth. The 4-H members must keep detailed records on the feeding & health of their project(s), participate in public speaking & community volunteer initiatives each year.

WHAT GOES INTO RAISING 4-H BEEF & LAMB?

The 4-H program promotes the "learn to do by doing" mindset in youngsters. The process of selecting, caring for, & raising these animals to the best of their ability is the sole job of the 4-H youth, who range in age from 9 - 21 years. Through mentors they discover what cattle/sheep like to eat & what makes their animal most comfortable (large pen size, clean bedding, feed variety are examples) & how to train these animals to follow a lead, have a bath & learn to accept pets & scratches from their human caretakers. Raising a 4-H project animal is hard work! 4-H members start a market beef project in October & a market lamb project in March & typically finish in May or June.

indicates project animal was born and raised on the 4-H member's family ranch or farm

Hello! My name is Peyton Christman and this is my 6th year participating in 4-H. I am in the 8th grade and some of my favourite things are playing sports, watching movies, and hanging out with friends.

I thoroughly enjoy raising cattle and I am so excited to present to you my latest beef market project, his name is Ferrari and he is an Angus Clubby cross. He has been superior to my other projects in his wide frame that packs on the steaks, depth and structure. Ferrari will have you racing to the BBQ as fast as your feet can carry you!

I'd like to thank my buyer Michael Grimes and the Grimes family for purchasing my steer last year!

This is my last year in 4-H and I'm only leaving because I'm too old to be a member. I hope to continue in the future as a 4-H leader because it has had such a huge impact on my life. 4-H has taught me how to speak in public, how to be a leader and a mentor, how to commit to something and see it through and how to give back to my community. It’s given me a place to be myself and made it possible to meet people with who I have so much in common with. I’m excited to close out my career with my very first homebred steer, Loki. He’s small, but he’s mighty and his weight is all in the right places. I expect for him to yield some great tasting beef. Thank you to Basement Technologies (Erica and Brock Couillard) and Michelle Barrett and Family who have continued to support me in my 4-H career by buying many of my past steers. I appreciate them staying with me during the “learning” years and I’m so happy that their loyalty has paid off with some really fantastic beef. If you ever wonder if you should put your kid in 4-H, my answer is yes! Not only will they learn some really important skills (like raising the best tasting beef in the west) they’ll make some really strong connections with some of the finest people around.

I’m a first-year 4-H member with a passion for all things hands on. From fluffy lambs to seasoned steers, I’m eager to learn and grow in the world of sheep and agriculture. Whether it’s feeding, breeding, or showing, count me in I’m ready to roll up my sleeves and get my hands (and maybe a little wooly). My first-year experience with my lamb project is a rewarding experience that blossoms a lifelong appreciation for agriculture, animal welfare, and personal growth the one take away was how, the speed of raising lambs for sale can be quite eye-opening. It's amazing to see how quickly they grow and develop. In my free time I enjoy biking and camping to maximize my outdoor time.

My name is Sage and I’m a senior member. I’ve been in the Millarville Stockland 4-H Club for about 13 years, doing both sheep and beef projects.

This years market lamb is a home raised Suffolk wether who loves to eat. Mister should finish nicely at about 110 to 115 pounds. This sale is bittersweet because it’s my first time selling a market lamb through the club sale in what is likely my last year in the club before heading away to school. Thank you for your consideration.

I’ve been in 4-H for two years and I am doing lambs this year. I joined 4-H because I thought would be a cool experience to teach animals, have animals and get to know different things. 4-H it is good it has excellent activities and really really fun activities. We do different types of things that if you were in the city or you didn’t do 4-H before you would not get to do. I will do 4-H again for my third year.

I have been with this club for 13 years and I have raised many market lambs and steers over this time. My lamb, Marvin is from my own flock and is one of the nicest lambs I’ve raised to date. I’d like to thank Teradan Farms for purchasing my market lamb last year. I’m looking forward to showing Marvin at our Club Achievement Day and at the 4-H District Show.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE IN THE DLMS FARM GATE TIMED AUCTION WITH

EXTENDED BIDDING

1.Visit dlms.ca and follow the link to the DLMS FarmGate timed auction site www.farmgatetimedauctions.ca, click the LOGIN/REGISTRATION button. First time users will select the REGISTER button from this page Fill out the registration form to signup for a free user account and it allows you to select a username and password for use on all Farm Gate Timed auctions. This program will send you text and email messages whenever there is activity on your favorite lots or someone challenges your proxy bid and this is why you will be asked for both your current email and cell phone number If you are a past participant in the Farm Gate Timed auctions simply enter your user name and password to continue. This takes you to a list of both current and upcoming Farm Gate Auctions.

2. You can choose your favourite lots in this sale at this time and the program will allow you to open either all sale lots or just your favorite lots on your screen. Any time there is active bidding on a lot you have identified on your favorite list you will get a text and/or an email noting this activity.

3. The program allows you to place a proxy bid on any sale lot. This in fact protects your interest in any lot of interest for you to a specified dollar value you set, when you may not be able to give 100% attention to the sale. If the lot has a $2000 bid on it and you place a proxy bid of $3500 into the system, the computer will bid $2100 for you but if some one else bids $2200, the computer will again bid for you, this time at $2300. The system will look after your interest to a maximum of $3500 If another bidder is on at $3600, your proxy will no longer be effective and you will no longer have the winning bid on this lot without once again logging in and bidding again or moving your attention to a second lot of interest.

4. At closing time of the sale the entire sale will extend bidding if a bid is placed on any lot in the sale. Any bid received after close time will extend the sale by the time listed on each sale. In Most cases the time gets shorter the longer in to extended bidding the sale is. When no bidding occurs for the extended time the computer will declare the sale finished.

5 Following the sale the Owner or Sale Manager will invoice all buyers in the sale, please contact the seller with questions or to arrange delivery, pick up or shipping of your purchases. For more info and assistance with bidding contact any of the sale contacts listed on the DLMS Website; DLMS FarmGate Timed Auctions ~ Mark Shologan Ph: 780-699-5082

Frequently Asked Questions:

WHAT IS RACEHORSE STYLE SALE CLOSE? Racehorse style sale close is when the entire sale stays open in extended bidding. This type of sale allows you as the bidder to change to a different lot within the same sale if the bidding has gone in to extended bidding.

HOW WILL EXTENDED BIDDING WORK? When we get to the close out end time the clock for close extends with any bid placed with less than 5 min on the clock. This type of extended bidding turns the end time to more of a soft time. Extended bidding allows bidders to compete in lots like a real auction and give all bidders the same time to make a decision. Always follow the clock to see how much time remains in the sale you are interested in
