New York Angus Association Mission The object of this association will be to promote in all ways the interests of the Angus cattle producers of New York State, to increase the number of breeders, to advertise and promote New York as an Angus breeding center as an inducement of buyers to visit New York breeders, to assist in furnishing outlets by promoting public sales and otherwise for the sales of surplus breeding and feeder stock of members, to seek to improve the general merit and extend the favorable reputation of New York Angus, and to do any and all proper things necessary to advance the prosperity of the breed and its breeders herein.

President’s Message Welcome Dear NY Angus Members, Welcome to the latest edition of the NYS Angus Directory! Here you will find a wealth of information regarding our members, sponsors and other events throughout New York and the Northeast. The New York Angus Association prides ourselves on the fact that we are an inclusive organization. We strive to make all returning members and new members alike feel right at home. I encourage you to reach out and visit with our breeders. There are many regional and statewide functions throughout the year. In addition, many breeders welcome on-farm visits. So, look them up, I’m sure they’d love to visit with you! Finally, if you are thinking of purchasing a product or service, check out the various agribusinesses listed in the directory. We want to patronize the businesses that support the NY Angus Association. Always feel free to give a call with any questions, comments or concerns. The strength of our organization comes from its membership and our member’s thoughts and opinions are vital! Best of Luck! Nicole Tommell 6

Our Angus Family The Importance of Membership WrittenBy: By:Allen AllenMoczygemba, Moczygemba,American AmericanAngus AngusAssn. Ass. CEO Written CEO Less than 150 years after George Grant brought the first Angus cattle to America, you and your families in New York have built this breed and this Association into one of the great success stories in American agriculture. But that’s why we form organizations like the New York and American Angus Associations, to help each other out, to pool our resources and know-how, to build something significant that wouldn’t be possible without the collective contributions of each and every member. To be a family of a friends – all working for, and supporting, each other. Angus today enjoys a greater than sixty-five percent market share in the genetics marketplace. Premiums for Angus cattle have never been higher. And thanks to Certified Angus Beef, there’s been nine consecutive years of record setting growth. And it’s all driven by the efforts of the Angus family – members and staff – that share a collective commitment to improvement of not only the Angus breed, but also to the rural communities that we live in and the beef industry as a whole. Our charge is to ensure that our growth continues. To ensure that opportunities expand and to ensure that the Association’s resources are focused in ways that continue to drive demand for our cattle. So even though today we’re celebrating unprecedented success, this Association cannot rest on its laurels because we all understand that there are no guarantees for our success. We must continue to push forward with the same shared commitment to advancing the interests of Angus, while finding ways to expand market share and market relevance. www.NY-ANGUS.com

Finally, I believe that market relevance drives, and ultimately, grows market share. In fact, I don’t believe that long-term growth can occur in the marketplace without providing a product that’s relevant. And that applies to both cattle genetics and carcass quality. In order to ensure that we continue to grow in relevance with both commercial cattlemen and consumers, it’s imperative that we continue to approach our mission in a strategic and disciplined manner. But that’s what we’ve done as an Association and what we’ll continue to do moving forward. In the end, however, it’s all about families. Our Angus family is strong, both nationally and in New York, and will continue to serve as the foundation for our growth and relevance in the marketplace.

New York State Angus Female Sale 2016

This year’s New York State Angus Female Sale was once again a great success! The sale was again held at New Penn Farm in Truxton, NY. Our sale hosts, Carl Hinkle and Jeanetta Laudermilk of New Penn Farm deserve our most sincere Thank You for all their hard work and effort to make this year’s sale such a success. We want to also thank the consigners who sold some of the best phenotypical and genetically combined females from within New York State and New England; and also the buyers who came from all over the New England region. A big Thank You goes out to the New Penn 4H club for all their help and willingness to jump in where they were

needed. The sale was a great experience for the kids and they really stepped up and put their best efforts forth, thank you! The facilities at New Penn Farm made for a fantastic sale site and an enjoyable day was had by all. The sale featured 60 lots and the Angus grossed $186,625 with an average of $3110. It is with the help of everyone involved that we were able to have such a successful year this year! The NY Angus Sale is the longest, most continuous sale of its kind in the nation, celebrating its 81st Anniversary this year. We are excited for the 2017 and we’ll see you then!

Reaching Your Customers Are you having a sale, large or small, or marketing a group privately? If you are selling cattle this year, then I am sure you’re looking for ways to market your cattle. The team at Angus Media is your perfect partner for all your marketing needs. Here’s what you should know about the American Angus Association’s media company. Angus Media is home to a unique range of print, digital and television programs. Everyone is familiar with the Angus Journal®, but Angus Media also has many marketing tools, as well. Those opportunities include advertising through the Angus Journal, the Angus Beef Bulletin, sale book production, direct marketing pieces (postcards, flyers, etc.) production and distribution, websites, e-blasts, and The Angus Report, a weekly television show on RFD-TV. The Angus Journal has a more than 13,000 circulation with the targeted audience of other registered Angus producers. The Angus Journal reaches these prospection registered Angus buyers, but it’s also very affordable to keep your farm’s name in front of prospective buyers through your state breeder’s page — at only $630 annually. The Angus Beef Bulletin, which has a September, October, January, February, and March issues, is geared toward commercial cattlemen, specifically those using Angus genetics. The Angus Beef Bulletin is free for commercial cattlemen using Angus genetics and has a circulation of 65,000-plus. Essentially, every Angus bull buyer from the past two years receives a copy of the Angus Beef Bulletin. Within Angus Media, there are also many great options for sale books (large or small) or direct mail pieces, such as a postcard, flyer, pamphlet, brochure, or farm newsletter. Sale books or direct mail pieces can be designed for sales of all types and 16

sizes, even online sales. We’re able to send these direct mailings or catalogs to Angus members and/or non-member bull and female buyers who have had cattle transferred into their name. These non-member bull and female buyers would essentially be commercial producers. We can also specify a certain mile radius around your sale location or to certain states of your choosing. Postcards or flyers are a cost-effective way for you to reach targeted prospective buyers in our area. Sale books produced through Angus Media are also posted digitally on the website, www.angus.media, and on the American Angus Association calendar of events. Having your sale book available online is critical, as viewership has been growing every year. Using the link to your website within an e-blast or sharing it on Facebook can drive viewership of your sale book and increase the exposure of your sale. As we all know, having a website is important to market your program and reach new potential customers. Angus Media can design and host your website to meet your needs. They also are able to send e-blast email advertisements for a very economical rate. If you have any questions or would like to visit about the many great marketing options available through Angus Media and the American Angus Association, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Setting the Standard

So, what make the CAB brand stand above the rest? Since there are dozens of “Angus” programs out there, including 40 other USDA-certified, we’d like to clarify that.

Live Animal Identification Step 1

Consistent Sizing

4 10- to 16-square-inch ribeye area Phenotypic: Predominantly (51%) solid black hair coat 5 OR Genotypic: AngusSource® program enroll- 1,500-pound hot carcass weight or less ment 6 AngusSource®, USDA-approved as a process Verified Program (PVP) since fall Less than 1-inch fat thickness 2005, documents source and group age while ensuring cattle have a minimum of 50% Angus genetics. Eligible cattle must be sired by a registered Angus bull Quality Appearance and and enrolled by the ranch of origin with month, day and year of birth for the oldest Tenderness calf in the group. For more information, 7 visit www.angussource.com. Superior muscling (restricts dairy influence) Carcass Specifications This screens out the influence of dairyStep 2 type cattle to maintain consistent yields Marbling and plate presentation. 1 Modest or higher marbling That qualifies a carcass for average Choice and ensures superior flavor and juiciness. Few other branded programs have this level of marbling, and it is the single largest barrier to CAB acceptance. 2 Medium or fine marbling texture Many small flecks of fat, as opposed to fewer, larger and coarser characteristics. Smaller flecks ensure consistent flavor and juiciness in each bite.

Maturity 3 “A” maturity for each, lean and skeletal characteristics All CAB carcasses are of “A” maturity, which is typically less than 30 months of age. Beef from younger animals is more tender than that from older animals. 70

8 Practically free of capillary rupture Limiting internal hemorrhaging in beef provides a more attractive meat case display. 9 No dark cutters Usually only a problem in animals that are stressed prior to harvest and caused by a drop in muscle glycogen levels, the beef appears dark brown to purplish and is not appealing to consumers. 10 No neck hump exceeding 2 inches This limits the influence of bos indicus (Brahman-type) cattle to address tenderness concerns.

FOOT SCORE GUIDELINES

The American Angus Association accepts foot scores from its members through a simple system aimed at the development of future decision-making genetic tools. Breeders can score feet using two categories, foot angle and claw set, and by following the guidelines below.

Guidelines 1 Animals must be scored prior to hoof trimming. 2 When there is variation among an animal’s feet, score the worst foot. 3 Score yearling bulls and heifers

• bulls must be between 320 and 440 days • heifers must be between 320 and 460 days

females can be scored following guidelines used when collecting mature weights. 4 Older (Note: Foot structure changes as animals age. Scores will be adjusted for age as part of the analysis. Scores should describe the animal as they are at the time of scoring, without consideration of age).

5 Large groups of 18-month or 2-year-old bulls can also be submitted, if available.

Comparing different breeds on a common Angus scale

Researchers at the Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (MARC) in Clay Center, Nebraska, annually calculate across breed adjustment factors to compare the genetic value of the 18 most utilized breeds. The 2016 report allows for bulls of differing breed compositions to be compared on a common EPD scale. Appropriate across-breed adjustment factors found in Table 1 are applied to EPDs produced in the most recent genetic evaluations to create across breed EPDs (AB-EPDs). The adjustment factors, given relative to an Angus equivalent of zero for each trait, take into account breed differences measured in the Germplasm Evaluation Project at MARC, as well as differences in breed average EPDs and base year. Add the specific adjustment factor to EPDs produced in the most recent genetic evaluations to directly compare EPDs that were formerly breed-specific. Commercial producers may find AB-EPDs most useful to decipher differences among breeds when making bull buying decisions. It is important for a producer to examine his/her own situation in order to find the most appropriate way to apply the AB-EPDs in their own selection program. Across breed EPDs are a very useful tool, stemming from a long standing, well-designed research program, but it is important to remember these predictions are not perfect. The accuracy of AB-EPD prediction depends on the within-breed EPD accuracy of the individual bulls being compared. In other words, AB-EPDs predict breed differences more accurately between two highly-proven bulls of different breed compositions than younger, less proven individuals. To examine the report in its entirety visit http://beefimprovement. org/content/uploads/2016/06/2016-BIF-Proceedings-1.pdf.

AAA Login is a free data entry and herd management service provided to Angus members, which allows you to submit registration applications and performance data on-line. The Login access allows producers to streamline information on their herds and submit data 24/7. The following is quick reference guide for registering and transferring animals via the AAA Login system. There are several key components necessary to register an Angus calf. Requirements include sire and dam registration number, permanent calf identification, sex, twin indicator, date of birth, animal name, and type of service on the dam, as well as the name, location, and member code of the first owner. Permanent Identification - Permanent identification marks shall be limited to a maximum of five (5) characters per animal. No two animals of the same sex, born in the same calendar year and registered under the name of the first owner, shall be given identical permanent identification marks in the same calendar year. Tattoo Module: http://www.angus.org/Education/Video/tattooing.htm Freeze Brand Module: http://www.angus.org/Education/Video/FreezebrandingModule.htm Registered Name - An animal’s name cannot contain more than 28 characters and spaces. All letters must be in English, and numerals may be Arabic and/or Roman. For any questions concerning the permanent identification or registration name process, please refer to the Breeders Reference Guide at http://www.angus.org/Pub/brg_part2.pdf or you may contact us at 816-383-5100 and request to speak with Registration. Quick Reference Guide for AAA Login Instructions: Please log in to your AAA Login account, and then follow the steps listed below to submit a registration for a calf. Manage Herd, Registration/Transfer/Performance, Registration/Transfer, Registrations -Includes EZ Registrations (Select the ‘Click Here for Online Entry’), All Eligible Dams, Search. You will now have a spreadsheet type list of active dams in the herd. Select the dam you’d like to register progeny from by clicking on the pen and paper icon to left of her information. A Registration Entry screen will open to submit her calf. From this point, it is fill in the blank from left to right, and all columns marked with an asterisk are a required field. If all of the data looks true and correct on your screen, you will click Save and it will put that registration into your cart, which automatically returns you to the All Eligible Dams list to then submit another calf. Now that you have entered all the information on the calves you wish to record, you may then click on the Cart option to review and check out. To complete your registration application, you must now check out your cart, select payment, and finally, submit the order for the request to be sent electronically to AAA. 80

Transferring Animals with Electronically Stored Pedigrees: An exciting feature via our AAA Login is the option to now store your registration certificates electronically rather than receiving a paper certificate. By selecting the option to electronically store your certificates at the time of registration, you will then also have the opportunity to transfer these animals via this method, should they be sold at a future time. Once logged in to your AAA Login, please follow the steps listed below to transfer animal with an electronically stored pedigree. Manage Herd, Registration/Transfer/Performance, Registration/Transfer, Transfers- For animals with electronically stored pedigrees (Select ‘Click Here for Online Entry), Search. This will generate a spreadsheet type list of all animals in your herd with electronically stored pedigrees. After you have selected the animal you wish to transfer, please select the coordinating pen and paper icon to the left of the registration number, which will then generate a Transfer Entry screen to submit the transfer information. This too, is a fill in the blank format and all required fields are marked with an asterisk. Additionally, please note the autofill option for the previous buyer information. Once you begin typing at least 3 letters of the name of a previous buyer, a pop-up option under the name box will appear which you may click on to select to autofill their information. Please note that there are 3 commonly missed sections of the Transfer Entry screen: 1. If you are transferring only a partial interest of said animal, please make sure to check the box which signifies that you are in fact, retaining an interest of ownership. 2. The Buyer 1 line, first box, is for the member code of the buyer. Should that information not be available, please leave this box blank. 3. Service information or open status at the time of transfer is vital to the transfer of all females. If she is bred, please list any and all service/sires/dates. However, if she is open please be sure to mark the box on the bottom of the screen that indicates she is open at transfer. If the information looks true and correct, you will now click Save and it will put the transfer request into your cart and return to your list of electronically stored animals to submit another transfer. Once complete, you may go to your cart, select check out, select payment, and finally, submit your order. We hope that you find these steps useful in helping you to register and/or transfer your Angus animals via the AAA Login system. Should you have any questions or need assistance in navigating your Login account, either on-line or via our Angus Mobile application, please do not hesitate to contact us at 816-383-5100. Requests for our Life of a Calf document regarding further AAA Login instructions and options may be sent to us at AAASupport@angus.org

Tips for Showing Appreciation for Stock Shows Courtesy of Sure Champ Showing livestock is about more than taking home banners and ribbons. That’s what everyone says. Besides the lessons of daily responsibility, winning and losing with grace and feeding and caring for animals, there is also a lot to be learned in how to be thankful. Livestock shows don’t happen without great leaders, even better volunteers and lots of financial support. When T.R., Dax and Colby Putz leave a show they are looking for whom to thank for their experience. They place strong emphasis on saying thank you to judges, ring help and sponsors. The Putz boys say they certainly enjoy the value of showing, meeting new people and hanging out with friends from across their home state of Iowa. But these young men are keen to how a simple thank you might help keep the show industry that they love growing and thriving. T.R., who is ten-years-old has earned awards in showmanship and exhibiting Champion heifers or steers at jackpots, the Iowa State Fair and the National Junior Hereford Expo shows. Dax shows Hereford cattle as well and his twin brother, Colby, shows chickens and sells eggs. T.R. says the awards make him proud to be a livestock showman and the fun he has makes him happy on the inside. The ribbons and trophies are icing on the cake. After they get home from a show Dax says he and his mom write down on a piece a paper whom he needs to send thank-you cards. “I start with, ‘Dear’ and the person’s name,” he says. “Then I say, ‘Thank you for sponsoring my show prize.’ The thank-you card is for the donor so they can feel good inside and proud too. They’re giving us something so we should give them something nice too.” Dax and Colby say it’s about showing respect and appreciation for the ribbon, premium or prize. The seven-year-old Putz boys prefer to thank people face to face, simply because it’s easier than writing for them. This may make some kids nervous but Dax says it’s really important to try to do. T.R. says at shows he will listen to the named

sponsors announced on the microphone. If there is a sponsor listed to a breed or showmanship award then he will make a note of that name too. At the recent Iowa Beef Expo, he says John Sullivan of Sullivan Show Supply was a major sponsor. T.R. intends to send Sullivan a note of appreciation for supporting such a big show. “Sometimes they will give a gift bag to every exhibitor and inside might be a new product from Sullivans,” T.R. says. “I think it’s important to tell him thank you because you feel good saying it and he probably appreciates hearing it.” Here are a few tips from the Putz boys on how to say thank you. 1. Have confidence. Dax says to just walk up to a sponsor at a show and say thank you for donating money or gifts. 2. Challenge others. If you are going up to a sponsor to say thank you, take your friends along and encourage them to do so. At the show maybe the only time you have to thank them in person, so do it. 3. Do more than write a thank you. When the Putz boys finish unloading their trailer and setting up stalls at a show they will offer help to others to do the same. T.R. says sometimes people need help unloading and loading chutes and show supplies and helping them feels really great.“Usually they just say thank you and I say,

‘No problem,” he says. 4. Use the right format on a card. Start each thank you card with the word, “Dear” then the persons’ name it goes to. Then, the Putz boys say to specifically thank the sponsor for whatever they gave. 5. Have an attitude for gratitude. Remember who sponsors a livestock award and how it feels to win something. Then when exhibitors grow up they should remember to sponsor an award too and pay it forward. 6. Thank everyone at home. The Putz boys are very aware of how much time and money their own parents sink into showing livestock. Dax says he is thankful to his mom for helping them in the show barn. Colby says he is grateful to his whole family for helping him with chicken chores and for having a good attitude.“We don’t build anyone

down,” he says. “We build them up.” 7. Thank the neighbors. The Putz family has a neighbor, Cade VanVliet, who travels with them to shows. VanVliet helps their family but they also carpool together to jackpot shows. The neighbor friend is teaching the Putz boys to fit and clip as well. T.R. says he is working to master front legs then VanVliet will put him on back legs. The boys say VanVliet has never accepted money from them as payment for help or travel expenses. So to thank him the family finds ways to treat him by giving gift cards or a new sweatshirt. 8. Don’t use email to send a thank you. T.R. says it takes longer to write a hand-written thank you card than to type an email. This means a handwritten card means more.“That and John Sullivan probably gets enough email as it is,” T.R. says.
