Talk about exciting times in the beef industry and more specifically the Hereford breed. The North American beef industry is poised to change, as we have never known it. With inventories lower than in the past six decades, supply will struggle to keep with demand. That, paired with a record crop in our part of the world, has pushed feeder cattle to record levels. This will also be reflected in upcoming bull sales. The Hereford breed is experiencing demand not seen in twenty five years in Canada and for those of you south of the forty ninth parallel, the demand for Hereford seed stock is likely stronger than it has ever been. I recently heard that a Montana Angus tour had to change its dates to accommodate breeders that were planning to attend a Hereford sale …that speaks loudly! Here at home the Canadian Hereford Association has announced the hiring of a new general manager, which is exciting, as we look to this man’s guidance leading into the next generation of technologically advanced beef production by a younger generation of breeders. This year’s offering is led by some young exciting herd sire prospects that were sired by former Agribition Champions. Any one of these bulls will offer a degree of consistency and predictability backed up by proven sires and the best cow families both programs have to offer. There are only two bred heifers in the sale, both have strong material traits that you can take home and start a new cow family with. The heifer calves will be competitive at any level, whether you are a junior competing in the toughest junior show in Canada (Bonanza) or a senior. A young heifer calf out of last year’s sale went on to win her division in the show the next day and won her class in Denver for her new owner. As always Agribition is a must attend for those serious about the Hereford breed. From what I have seen in my travels, this will be one of the strongest shows we have had in awhile. We are proud to be consigning to the National Hereford Sale again this year. We again are sending our only female consignment of the year to the Agribition sale.
