Welcome Dear 2013 GTSS Participant,

The future is definitely very bright, as prices for bison meat prices as well as breeding stock hold strong. New markets are emerging every day as more people incorporate bison as a regular part of their diet. This is definitely the time to look at getting into the bison business, or expanding your existing herd with quality animals from the Gold Trophy Show & Sale. Thank you for attending the 33rd Anniversary Gold Trophy Show and Sale. Please remember to thank sponsors of the class trophies, grand champion awards, and winter conference, as well as the catalog advertisers.

Our business today has changed dramatically since the first buffalo charged into the National Western sale arena in 1980. The consignors and buyers at that first Gold Trophy Show and Sale were blazing a trail into unknown territory, guided only by their passion for the animal, and the confidence that consumers would someday discover the fantastic taste and nutritional qualities of bison meat. We weathered significant setbacks when production preceded demand. Today, as in other times, many of our producers are experiencing diminished capacity due to drought and other economic difficulties. We are grateful that the dedication and vision of our industry pioneers have been rewarded in recent years as customers have Dave Carter discovered the outstanding quality of meat produced on National Bison Association Executive Director bison ranches throughout the United States and Canada. Another change we introduce in 2013 is the introduction of online auction bidding through the services of Cattle in Motion. See details on how to bid online on this page. INTERMOUNTAIN BISON Roger Ball Idaho Fall, ID 83402 208-227-9000 Intermountain Bison began purchasing bull calves and yearlings in 2008. Our meat snack company “Intermountain Natural” was beginning to experience difficulty finding enough lean meat to support our growing bison jerky line. We soon realized the profit potential in starting a cow calf operation and went to work making it happen. We purchased heifer calves, yearlings, and bred heifers from northern Canada to Oklahoma. Within two years we had accumulated near 1400 heifers to place on four separate ranches and found ourselves in the fencing business. Our breeding bulls came primarily from Canada with a few purchased at the premier bull sales in the United States. This is our first year bringing animals to GTSS and we hope they will serve well. We have implemented an aggressive selective breeding program in hopes of building a productive and profitable herd. The heifer calves shown at GTSS are from bred heifers sold to us by Doug Griller. They were sired by pure wood bulls from females with a heavy wood background. The bull calves are a product of our own breeding program. NEBRASKA BISON Randy & Jane Miller www.NebraskaBison.com 15431 Firth Road, Adams, NE 68301 www.MillerBisonAtElkheadRanch.com HC 66 Box 204, Bruner, MO 65620 402-430-7058 / 402-782-2500 The Nebraska Bison ranch and business started in1995 with the purchase of 20 Custer State Park heifers. The herd has steadily grown and is genetically diverse deriving from the original breeding stock. Today, Randy and Jane run 100 cows while growing another 300 to 400 calves, and finishing 500 to 600 head, annually at their Nebraska and Missouri ranching operations. The calves at GTSS are selected for today’s performance and production needs. * PLATTE RIVER POWER AUTHORITY – RAWHIDE ENERGY STATION Contact: Charles Rogers 2000 E. Horsetooth Rd., Ft. Rawhide Energy Station in Northern Colorado. These majestic animals play a very important role in our commitment to be good stewards of the land. Its primary herd lineage came from Custer State Park, M-Line and Colorado Bison Co - Ft. Peck. Rawhide has been a GTSS consignor since 1986 and has seen its bison win numerous awards over the years. The herd has steadily grown and currently numbers 300 production cows. The total herd ranges from 1,000 to 1,200 animals on an annual basis. Many of its breeding bulls are purchased from GTSS, and the ranch currently has 25 bulls, representing all the major breeders. Purchasing top quality animals has enabled this operation to develop an outstanding production herd. We have spent the last decade acquiring several different gene pools of superior producing animals. By utilizing a breeding program crossing animals of superior genetic traits, we have developed an excellent producing animal bred with fertility, daily weight gains, early maturity, and high carcass yields as our main goals. This is the first time we have consigned to the NBA’s GTSS, and we look forward to showcasing the results of our breeding program.

SHADY CREEK BISON Randy & Milissa Linz 24612 County Road 23 Richmond, MN 56368 320-597-3196 Shady Creek Bison (SCB) was established in 1993. Our initial herd began with four animals. Purchased from Dan & Theresa Meyer’s Hidden Bison Ranch were three heifers and a bull that carried the Roosevelt bloodline. We then built our herd purchasing animals from Sand Lake Bison in Wisconsin, as well as animals from Salina, Kan., North Dakota and many other states. Through the years we have culled and replaced our original herd with our best offspring. New bloodlines were introduced by bringing in new breeder bulls every two or three years. Breeder bulls have been purchased throughout the nation from state sales and private ranches. SCB is still home to three descedents of our Roosevelt bull along with 57 handpicked herd mates. Over the years SCB has had numerous placings at the MnBA’s Legends of the Fall Show and Sale, including 1999 DTBA, Gold Trophy - Pen of 3 Heifer Calves; 2001 GTSS, Honorable Mention - Yearling Heifer and a Yearling Bull. Consigned this year are two yearling heifers and two yearling bulls. These buffalo come from Shady Creek Bison cows and are sired by a Corn Husker bull that was purchased as yearling bull. SILVER CREEK BISON Nolan & Nicole Miller (The Miller Family) 204-532-2350 or 204-773-6725 Box 355, Binscarth, MB, Canada R0J0G0 Silver Creek Bison was established by Lorne and Louise Miller in 1988 with the purchase of six bison. Nolan entered the bison business in 1992 and partnered with his parents in 1994. Since then they have increased their bison numbers to 1800. The Millers run a cow calf through to finishing program. With close record keeping they select for their breeding program. They have shown at GTSS in the past and are proud recipients of Grand Champion Bull three times. They have purchased animals at GTSS in previous years, some which have made it back to their ranch in Canada the others going to their coowned herd in Wyoming. The Miller family is looking forward to many more bright years in this exciting industry, and if you are ever in the Great White North, please feel free to stop by; we would love to show you around.

Bulls have come from Budd, Gear, State of Wyoming, Diamond Tail, and some are home raised. The herd gets cake in the winter and in a few winters, they have been fed hay. This year was an extreme drought and we began feeding cake in July. Most of the calves have been eating cake since October. If snow is available during the winter months, it provides the water requirements for the buffalo. Calves are weaned after the first of the year. * WICHITA BUFFALO COMPANY AT SANDY SPRINGS FARMS James Stepp 405-542-6015 28580 Highway 37, Hinton, OK 73047 www.sandyspringsfarms.com james@sandyspringsfarms.com Wichita Buffalo Company at Sandy Springs Farms has suffered through the worst drought and hottest summer in Oklahoma history. And that is saying a lot since we were the center of the Dust Bowl era in the 1930s. We have fed hay every day of 2012. In spite of that, our heifers have turned out beautifully. We are bringing our best of the best to the Gold Trophy Show and Sale. Wichita Buffalo focuses on the restaurant and health food industry within Oklahoma. We would expand, but the demand always outstrips supply. We have expanded our herd, but we intensively focus on raising only the very best. The very best means animals that grow well, offer great cuts and are easy to handle. The past two years we have won GTSS Reserve Grand Champion Female. We come with high hopes again this year and look forward to meeting all of our buffalo friends again this year. . *WOLVERINE BISON COMPANY Mark Silzer and Cec Stumborg (306) 682-4933 (Mark); (306) 682-3987 (Cec) Box 2773 Humboldt, SK Canada S0K 2A0 Wolverine Bison Company began raising bison in 1994. We’ve built our herd on good, solid plains animals that have proven to be early finishers with exceptional yield. We believe in keeping detailed records on all of our animals and have operated a closed herd on the female side for 14 years. We’ve been rewarded many times at both the GTSS and Canadian Western Agribition shows and sales since 1998 and are excited to be returning to the GTSS in 2013. We feel privileged to be a part of this great industry.

Judges Live Animal Judges Ken Klemm has been in the buffalo industry since 1987. After working for two large Colorado buffalo operations, he and his family moved their own herd to a plot of land they purchased in northwestern Kansas. This ranch has grown to approximately 3500 acres and currently is home to some 550 buffalo and 125 cattle. In 2000, Ken teamed up with a fellow buffalo producer to form a simple company with which to market the quality meat from their ranches. This small company has grown and is now known as The Buffalo Guys. Its meat, hot dogs, sausages, jerky and seasonings can be found in over 1100 natural/ gourmet groceries coast-to-coast. The Buffalo Guys also have a large presence on the internet and ship to homes and restaurants in all 50 states. A first generation American and native of Chicago, Ken also worked as a trapper and a licensed guide in the Yellowstone region.

Alan Oborny and his wife Sheila live in rural Garden County, Neb. Their daughter Chelsea is a junior at Cornell College and son Justin is a freshman at the University of Wyoming. Alan and Sheila married in 1986 and began operating their family-owned farming and ranching operation in western Kansas. Over the next 19 years, they became owner/operators of a diversified agricultural operation including farming, Black Angus cattle and buffalo production. They purchased

their first ten head of buffalo in the spring of 1990 and eventually grew the herd to approximately 130 head. Alan is a current and charter member of the Kansas Buffalo Association and has served in many capacities, including a three-year term as president of the KBA. The Obornys have been members of the National Buffalo/Bison Association since 1989 and were also members of the American Bison Association. Over the years, Alan’s agricultural interests gravitated toward the buffalo, and in the fall of 2005 he was offered a position as manager of Blue Creek Ranch for Turner Enterprises, Inc. Blue Creek Ranch is 86,000 acres of mainly of native sandhills rangeland and is home to approximately 3500 head of buffalo. The Obornys operate Blue Creek Ranch primarily as a cow/calf production operation. Alan recently was elected to the board of directors of the Nebraska Grazing Land Coalition, an organization that promotes rangeland education, conservation and stewardship programs on a state level and is affiliated with the Grazing Land Conservation Initiative on a national level. Alan’s most recent and “ highest” accolade, much to his wife’s delight, is that he is one of the newest inductees of AARP. “I am honored to be a judge for the GTSS and look forward to the opportunity,” said Alan.

Marielle Graese, 23, lives in Rice Lake, Wisc., where her family owns and operates Northstar Bison, a vertically integrated company. The business began in 1994 when she was just a little girl. Not long after raising their first calves to finish they began marketing their 100 percent grassfed meat. The overwhelming demand for their product grew rapidly into what now has become possibly the nation’s largest

Judges-continued grassfed bison company. They purchased their own processing facility in 2005, completing the vertical integration. Continued demand for the product has caused them to outgrow their current facility, leading to the purchase of a second processing facility. Early on Marielle could be found outside working with the animals with her father, Lee Graese, and can still be found there today. She has now become the herdsman overseeing the health of their 700 head herd. She has developed a keen eye for judging live animals for soundness and carcass quality. She has accompanied her father during much of his show and sale judging in the United States and Canada. She was a youth judge at the 2009 MNBA sale and has competed and placed in the junior judging events at the Gold Trophy in Denver. She judged the Western Bison Association show the last two years as well. Marielle and her three siblings recently started selling breeding stock from their award winning cow herd, which is proving to be a sustainable venture. She currently serves as secretary/treasurer for the Dakota Territories Buffalo Association, is a member of the NBA youth committee, and youth representative on GTSS Winter Conference committee.

Market Class Judges Stephen H. Cave has judged the GTSS market division since its inception in 2000. He is assistant director with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Marketing Service, Livestock, Poultry and Seed Program, Grading and Verification Division. He is a 35+ year veteran with USDA, having started his career in 1977 as a USDA Meat Grader 12

in Omaha, Neb. In his current position in Golden, Colo., he manages the federal grading of carcass beef, lamb and veal and calf throughout the United States, ensuring nationwide accuracy and uniformity of grading. Cave also assists in the administration of the national school lunch and other federal feeding programs for red meats, including bison purchases for Indian reservations. This is his 14th consecutive year to judge bison carcasses for the National Bison Association’s annual GTSS contest. Cave is a graduate of Kansas State University with a degree in animal science.

Assisting Cave in judging the GTSS market classes is Paul A. Wiggins. In his current position as product verification branch chief at the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Meat Grading Verfication Division, Paul manages the federal grading of carcass beef, lamb, veal and calf throughout the United States and Puerto Rico, ensuring accuracy and uniformity of grading in his area of responsibility. He is also responsible for the production of commodity meat items that are eventually further processed into final school lunch items. Other areas of responsibility include grading items traded on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and the certification of certain branded products such as Certified Angus Beef.

Market Classes-Host & Judging Criteria The National Bison Association is pleased to again host its 2013 market classes in partnership with Double J Meat Packing, Inc. of Pierce, Colo. Double J Meat Packing, Inc. is an 11-year-old business, owned and operated by the Hasbrouck family. Over the past seven years, Double J has experienced steady growth and profitability by expanding in niche markets. By focusing on premium natural beef and bison, both growth industries, Double J has proven itself as the leader in custom slaughter and fabrication along the front range. Several of the leading bison marketers currently utilize Double J Meat Packing. With extensive experience, Toy Archer, director of operations, and Phil Wicke, plant manager, have spear-

headed the growth of Double J Meat Packing. Additional fabrication and coolers have facilitated supplementary key accounts to provide the stability and longevity essential to the meat industry. Additionally, Double J houses the “Rinse and Chill” system to enhance the quality, yields and shelf life of the products distributed by this business. Kelli (Hasbrouck) Crider, president since 2002, acknowledged the importance of partnerships with industry groups such as the NBA. “We are proud to serve the bison industry and its association by hosting the Market Class for the sixth consecutive year. It’s through programs such as this that we can give back to the industry that has provided so much for us.” Double J Meat Packing is located on Main Street in Pierce, Colo., and can be reached at 970-834-1388.

OIL ON CANVAS BY REID CHRISTIE, CODY, WY

The Story of the Legendary American Bison known as BJR Ten Bears In the fall of 1984 Merlin Maass visited Dennis Rowe of Buffalo Jump Ranch located near Bozeman, Montana. While viewing Rowe’s bison, Merlin noticed one bull calf that stood out. He was exceptionally wide and deep bodied even for a calf. The calf always presented himself out in front of the herd, showing he was already the leader, protective of his mom and the other calves and their moms. The following spring Merlin purchased this bull calf and several other bison and moved them to Colorado. This calf, BJR Ten Bears grew into an exceptional bison bull. He was shown at the National Bison Association’s Gold Trophy Show and Sale and won Gold in his class each year: Yearling Bull-1986, 2-Year-Old Bull- 1987 and Mature Bull-1988. He is the only bull in the history of GTSS to win Gold three times. BJR Ten Bears became the nucleus of Colorado Bison Co.’s award winning herd. His offspring inherited his superior genetics and are also recipients of many GTSS trophies. His greatness lives on in these descendants which are dispersed throughout the United States.

Late in age at his passing, BJR Ten Bears was laid to rest facing west between two pine trees in the sunset shadow of Rocky Mountain National Park near the residence of Merlin Maass. Maass and his best friend, a standard poodle named Ms. Fancy Pants, take daily walks in the BJR Ten Bears Park in Buffalo Highlands which is dedicated to the memory of this magnificent bison bull.

And so, The Legend Lives On...
