“I would strongly encourage students

to do an extended project, whichever university they want to go to. Geoff Parks, Director of Admissions, University of Cambridge.

VISION AND CURRICULUM

The A-level choices offered by Harington School have been carefully selected to keep avenues of future study open. These are the facilitator subjects, recognised by the most prestigious universities as having the most academic rigour and, therefore, giving access to the widest range of degree courses. Harington students will normally take four A-levels or three A-levels and the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). Harington School offers: Biology, Chemistry, Economics, English, French, Geography, History, Mathematics and Further Mathematics, Philosophy, Physics and Spanish. This may be added to pending the results of the consultation process which begins in December. Applicants will be invited to review choices should there be any changes. The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) will be taken by some students and is designed to help them develop the research skills required for university and the project management skills needed in the workplace. There will be an opportunity to take the ABRSM grades in Music. An integral part of our formal curriculum is the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme, which will be undertaken by all students. Achieving a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award shows that someone has the skills, determination and mentality to really succeed and we are proud to be able to offer it at all levels.

The expectation of students at Harington School is that the vast majority will apply for places at the most prestigious universities either in the UK or abroad. Our sixth form curriculum has been designed to facilitate this, developing individual and academic potential. It is an academic sixth form which only offers A-levels. Students will have the opportunity to work with others who share similar abilities and have the same positive attitudes and high aspirations. The curriculum provides opportunities for leadership, and Harington School students are expected to make positive contributions to the School and wider community. Upon entry to the sixth form, students are assigned a personal mentor who will advise and assist them in achieving their full potential. Students opt for at least four subjects in Year 12, with advice regarding suitable combinations of subjects being given on an individual basis. This is reviewed at the end of Year 12, however, it is expected that all students will continue with at least three choices.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR Although academic subjects are a fundamental part of Harington School, we also provide a rich variety of extracurricular activities. Every student will take part in our enrichment programme which will help develop them into well-rounded individuals and provide additional life skills that will make them attractive to the most prestigious universities. Students are given the opportunities to balance their academic and social learning, whilst also contributing to the local and wider community, extending and developing students’ ‘soft skills’. Musical performance and sport form a large part of this with Wednesday afternoons being given over to this aspect of School life.

Every student is expected to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme. The scheme is a vehicle to developing many skill areas such as community work and public speaking; the latter of which is developed further though Youth Speaks and the English Speaking Union. Students’ leadership skills are developed by giving them the opportunity to coach younger students, as well as taking part in the Sports Leadership Award. Harington School has excellent facilities on site, as well as those available local to the School.
