The principal symbol of Catholic Junior College (CJC) is the Holy Spirit. The Spirit of God , depicted by the dove, guides the College in every word, thought and deed.
The Spirit helps keep Christ alive, symbolised by the cross, in the CJC community so that we act ‘In Truth and Love’, in and beyond the College.
The college motto, In Veritate et Caritate (‘In Truth and Love’) speaks of our mission to nurture students who will be thinkers and leaders that uphold integrity, and are driven by the desire to serve and improve the world around them.
The College Flame reinforces the idea that the light of God, knowledge and wisdom must lead the way in doing that.
The Crest, in the shape of a shield, depicts the armour needed to guard ourselves from what is contrary to God’s ways. It is clad in gold to signify how we treasure the College’s Catholic identity and to remind us of the pursuit of excellence in learning and living.

As we look back with pride on the kaleidoscope of college activities and achievements in 2023, we celebrate and thank God for the many opportunities and achievements that the CJ family has been blessed with. Throughout the year, CJCians pushed the boundaries in Academic, Leadership and Service Learning pursuits and grew in confidence as Thinkers with a Mission and Leaders with a Heart. We celebrate the sustained good performance of the Class of 2022 in the GCE A-Level examinations. The majority of our students gained admission to reputable institutes of higher learning both locally and overseas, with a sustained number of deserving students receiving prestigious scholarships.
As Singapore emerged fully from the COVID-19 pandemic, the College seized the opportunity to stretch the learning horizons of CJCians through the myriad of enriching learning activities in 2023 which includes STEM week, Economics Week, CJC-NJC ELL Symposium and exchange programmes with our overseas partner schools in Japan and Vietnam.
Besides academic excellence, CJCians strove for excellence in our respective Co-Curricular Activities (CCAs), achieving distinguished individual and team awards at the Singapore Youth Festival Arts Presentation, National School Games and other national competitions. True to the CJC spirit of servant leadership, many CJCians ventured beyond the classroom to participate in a wide range of service learning projects at class, CCA and House level, creating a positive impact on the lives of many in the community. We also partnered a wide range of Voluntary Welfare Organisations in supporting the poor and disadvantaged. We launched our inaugural CJC Caritate Award which enabled CJCians to nominate their peers for notable acts
of kindness and for making a positive difference in the lives of others. These experiences reinforce in CJCians the importance of using their God-given talents to serve others in truth and love. All these initiatives and achievements are made possible through the culture of care that permeates our College community. Our dedicated teachers pave the way as mentors, guiding the students tirelessly towards achieving their aspirations. Supporting the teachers and students are the unsung heroes of the College, our dedicated team of non-teaching staff who work behind the scenes to create a conducive learning environment.
We are also blessed and thankful for the support given by the College’s School Management Committee, Parents and Alumni. Through their advice, support and participation in college events, we have been able to provide a wide range of learning opportunities for our students and sustain CJC’s distinctive brand of holistic education.
As the year closes, my seven-year term as Principal of CJC will come to an end. On this note, I wish to express my gratitude to all my colleagues with whom I have worked over the years. My thanks and appreciation extend to the School Management Committee, parents and the CJ alumni for working tirelessly with me and staff members to support our students and help the College grow. I thank all CJCians for their belief in my leadership, and for always contributing their ideas and talents to make CJ a place of excellence for learning and living, and a better home for all. I pray that God will continue to bless the College, and be a constant source of strength and encouragement for all our students and teachers as they continue to uphold the mission and vision of CJC in the next lap. memories with their newfound friends.

Dr EE PENG LIANG MEMORIAL AWARD
This Award is the highest honour awarded to a student in Catholic Junior College. It is presented to an outstanding student, who has achieved academic excellence, a distinguished record in co-curricular activities and community service, and who also exemplifies the college values of Truth and Love.
Olivia achieved an excellent academic record, having obtained 5 distinctions in H2 Biology, H2 Chemisty, H1 General Paper, H1 Geography and Project Work for her A level results. Oliva possesses scholastic potential and had displayed much commitment to the college’s academic programmes. She demonstrates original and independent thinking, and is able to draw intelligent connections across divergent concepts and ideas.
Olivia is also a natural leader who has won the respect of her peers. She exhibited commendable leadership qualities as an Assistant Home Tutorial Councillor (AHTC) of the class. A friendly and caring individual, she often looked out for the welfare of her peers. She made the effort in being mindful of the
feelings of others and affirmed them through her words and deeds. As a student leader, Olivia held herself to a higher standard by taking the initiative to help her peers and to recognize their strengths and contributions. She worked well with teachers and peers in carrying out her responsibilities. She played an essential role in the daily functioning of the class as she formed the crucial link between the college administration and her classmates.
Olivia’s leadership and personal effectiveness were also evident in other roles that she undertook. As an Excecutive Committee member of her CCA; Modern dance, she worked closely with the other members of the Executive Committee, teachers and instructor in ensuring a positive experience for all members of the CCA.
In addition, as a senior in college, she played an important role serving as a mentor to the new student leaders in the 2022 Class Management Committee (CMC) Training, sharing with them her breadth of experiences as a senior student, providing them invaluable guidance to assist them in adjusting to a new environment. A sociable and friendly person, Olivia was instrumental in easing her juniors into life in junior college. This demonstrated her willingness to take up new responsibilities and duties.
Olivia also receives the Subject Prize Award for H1 Geography.
MR BERNARD CHEN MEMORIAL AWARD
This Award honours an outstanding student leader. Its recipient must show impressive leadership skills and a high standard of integrity and commitment to the college.
Nivish served as the Student Council President and was also a member of the Community Involvement (CI) wing, one of three wings that strived to build school community and increase inclusivity and voice of students. Nivish displayed the qualities of a leader who is willing to make personal sacrifices upfront, establish open communication to build understanding and strong relationships among team members, and genuine in wanting to serve others.
Even though he was the president, Nivish behaved as an ordinary and diligent member of CI wing, because he believed in empowering the wing leaders. He gave the opportunity and
space for the wing leaders to lead yet he would mentor them behind the scenes to ensure that they succeed.
As the president, he was well-loved by all the members in council for his caring nature and the three wings were well integrated with each other under his leadership. He role modelled servant leadership and inspired the student councillors to help one another regardless of which wing they came from.
Nivish’s care and concern for the people extended to the entire student body. He often took initiative to support the Class Management Committee or to help his teachers and peers. Despite his heavy commitments, he took time to encourage and work alongside his classmates who were struggling academically.
Nivish is also awarded the Harvard Prize Book, Singapore. This award is given to caring individuals who have, over a sustained period of time, gone beyond the call of duty, to perform acts of kindness and care, and who may have influenced his or her peers or family members to do likewise.
In addition, Nivish also receives the CCA Outstanding Contribution Award for his outstanding contribution and service at college level in Student Council CCA.
This award is presented to Gwen Ashley in recognition of her invaluable contribution in helping to shape the spiritual character of the college community.
Gwen Ashley was the Vice-President of the Catholic Activities wing of the Student Council from 2021 to 2022.
She was a competent leader who displayed a deep faith and desire to make God known to her peers. She conducted herself with integrity and kindness, serving as an excellent Catholic role model for her peers. Gwen’s strong interpersonal skills were
reflected in her ability to inspire her team towards a shared vision. She helmed critical projects during her time in CJC such as the JC1 Religious Education Programme session held during Orientation, the 2022 virtual Lenten Evening, and the inaugural Mental Wellness Week. These initiatives not only helped connect students to the wider CJC community but formed a valuable avenue for them to explore their faith.
Gwen Ashley was also a regular presence at events such as college Masses and Genesis sessions, serving wherever called upon. Her sincerity and dedication to building up the Catholic ethos of the college are truly commendable, and we thank her for her leadership.
Gwen Ashley also receives the CCA Outstanding Contribution Award for her outstanding contribution and service at college level in Student Council CCA.
This award is given to students who have faced considerable challenges in their school life and have overcome these obstacles. This award recognises their courage, indomitable spirit and resilience.
An outstanding student, Gabriel achieved the CJC Flame Scholarship in 2021 but had an extremely difficult year in 2022 because of family circumstances. His mother underwent a brain tumour biopsy in December 2021 that went wrong and was in a coma for quite a while at the hospital. Although his mother eventually regained consciousness, she was never the same again.

Elaine is a highly dependable and passionate Vice President of Interact Club CCA. In her role, she demonstrated the ability to lead through example and worked closely with the executive members in the execution of the various projects in the club. She was able
report to college without fail, completing his assignments and trying his best in his studies. He also continued to excel as the Vice President (Head of People Development) of the CJC Nexus Society where he trained members in the area of financial literacy and investment knowledge. He also headed and organised a Financial Literacy Week and Business Week in CJC. A dutiful son, he had to help his father out at home with various chores. It was not visible to all that Gabriel was undergoing such challenging circumstances. In the mid year examination, Gabriel suffered from a relapse of hyperthyroidism which affected his grades. Between the period of the mid year to the preliminary examination, Gabriel still managed a significant improvement in his grades as a result of his hard work and tenacity.
In addition, for his excellent achievement as well as contribution to Nexus Investment & Entrepreneurship Society CCA, Gabriel is also awarded The CCA Achievement Award under the Excellence category and for Teams and Outstanding Contribution Award respectively. Gabriel also receives the Subject Prize Award for H1 General Paper.

In order to inspire and empower other members, she also encouraged club members to initiate their own projects to serve others. She guided and supported them until they completed their projects. She was well regarded by her peers for her servant leadership.
In the years that she served, she has led the club in 2 major projects, which are Valentines Day Project and Project Apricus. In addition, she has participated in 4 other projects such as the Migrant Workers Project.
Elaine also receives the CCA Outstanding Contribution Award for her contribution to the Interact Club CCA.

Mrs Phyllis Lim, Principal of CJC, commended the Class of 2022 for their results and said, “you picked up the pace and seized opportunities to embrace full learning activities once the easing of Safe Management Measures took effect. Clara is an enthusiastic learner who embraces opportunities to learn and stretch her thinking. She participated in the History Stretch Programme in CJC where she participated in discussions of higher-order historical content, skills, and concepts. She also took on the role of a facilitator for “Litera”, an event organized by the College’s Literature Department, where she engaged her cohort peers in literary discussions. In addition, Clara was a participant in the Youth Ecosperity Dialogue which equipped her with new perspectives and insight into our society and environment. Academically, Clara did consistently well in College examinations. She attained the Ministry of Education Merit Award in 2021 in recognition of her consistently good academic results.
Clara displayed admirable leadership during her time as Vice-Captain of the Floorball Team. She motivated and led her teammates to challenge themselves beyond their capabilities; she also fostered a positive culture within the CCA where everyone was valued and uplifted. During the competition season, whenever morale was low, she actively reaffirmed her team’s effort which helped them to sustain their drive towards winning their matches. Eventually, they managed to place 4th at the National School Games Floorball Championships ‘A’ Division Girls in 2022.
Olivia is a focused individual who values discipline and effort to achieve her academic goals. Responsive and attentive in class, she faithfully took down notes and organised her resources for effective revision. She also contributed ideas in class and asked good questions. In recognition of her good academic achievement, she was eligible for the Edusave Merit Bursary in 2021.
Olivia’s leadership and personal effectiveness were also evident in other roles that she undertook. As a senior in college, she played an important role as a mentor to the new student leaders at the 2022 Class Management Committee Training. A sociable and friendly person, Olivia was instrumental in easing her juniors into their roles in CJC.
In the area of community service, Olivia’s contributions are commendable. As the Assistant Home Tutorial Councillor, she led a partnership between her class and the Singapore Association for Mental Health. Olivia worked well with her peers in the design and presentation of an online workshop for the public on the topic of trauma-informed care. At her own initiative, she served as a student helper in facilitating a Blood Donation Drive event for the Health Sciences Authority. Olivia clearly demonstrated deep care and concern for members of the community.
Gwyneth is an inquisitive individual who possesses a fine analytical mind. She reads widely, writes lucidly, and has shown a good ability to explore issues from different perspectives. Gwyneth’s intellectual capacity earned her a place in CJC’s Ignite programme, a two-year interdisciplinary programme that challenge students to think critically and creatively. She was also the recipient of a number of awards for academic achievement including the CJC Outstanding Academic Achievement Award, Best Project Work Group award, and the Higher Education Community (CDC-CCC) Education Merit Award in 2021.
An enthusiastic member of the CJC Choir, her Co-Curricular Activity (CCA), Gwyneth participated in numerous performances including CJCelebrates 2021 and 2022 (a virtual college concert) and Open House 2022. She was also selected as a member of the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Arts Presentation Choir, overcoming COVID-19 constraints to put together two wonderful pieces for the Singapore Youth Festival Arts Presentation.
Despite the limitations and challenges brought about by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Gwyneth participated in various enrichment and leadership programmes. These included the 2021 year-end programme organised by the CJC Humanities Department in partnership with Tran Phu High School in Hanoi, Vietnam. Over two days, Gwyneth took on the perspective of a Southeast Asian country and participated in lively virtual discussions with fellow CJC students and their Vietnamese counterparts on the topic of COVID-19 Vaccines Global Access (COVAX) in the region. This experience sparked her interest in such programmes, and she went on to participate in CJC Model United Nations (MUN) in 2022, clinching the Outstanding Delegate Award.
Anjana is an amiable and self-disciplined individual who needs minimal structured guidance from his tutors. He actively advocates for inclusivity and always seeks to make others within a group feel a sense of belonging. He believes in the importance of collaboration and strives to seek common ground with others of differing views. Due to his strong work ethic, Anjana attained the Outstanding Academic Achievement awards in 2021 and 2022.
Anjana struck an effective balance between his academic endeavours and his responsibilities as a member of his Co-Curricular Activity (CCA), Floorball. He challenged himself both physically and mentally during training sessions. He was a key player in the team that went far during the 2022 National School Games ‘A’ Division Floorball Championships. Anjana also contributed to the college as an Aesthetics Leader. He worked with his other class committee members to create a harmonious class culture where everyone felt included.
A diligent and motivated student, Keene has demonstrated the tenacity to see things through in difficult situations. He was awarded with the Edusave Merit Bursary Award in 2021 and 2022 in recognition of his strong academic achievement. Keene took part in the General Paper-Economics Stretch Programme organised by CJC in 2021 where he learnt about the challenges of sustainability in Singapore, and attended various talks by renowned speakers from Prime Minister’s Office Singapore (PMO). Pursuing his interest in the studies of political issues, he also participated in the CJ-Mun Parliament in 2022. He acted as a delegate for a Member of Parliament and discussed issues related to the resolution of inequality during simulated parliamentary discussions.
Keene also showed strength of character as a member of his Co-Curricular Activity (CCA), Tennis. He committed himself fully to the physically demanding tennis training sessions, and earnestly welcomed feedback from his coach, be it to improve individual technical skills or gameplay tactics. His efforts paid off when he was chosen to represent the college at the National School Games Tennis Championships ‘A’ Division Boys in 2022.
Furthermore, Keene exhibited a strong sense of initiative by stepping up to serve the class as the Subject Representative for Economics. He also went beyond his role to help manage class finances for the subject and served the class well by giving presentations to his class during the College’s Economics Week in 2021. He stepped up to become the Publicity Manager for Economics Week in 2022 where he collaborated with his schoolmates to design posters and film promotional videos for the event.
Yida is an independent and inquisitive learner. He has an analytical mind which enables him to organise and present information systematically. His consistent hard work contributed to his good results. He attained the Academic Achievement Award for excellence in H1 Chemistry and was placed on the Principal’s Honour Roll for the 2021 Promotional Examinations.
Aside from his academic achievements, Yida also demonstrated strong interpersonal skills as a member of his Co-Curricular Activity (CCA), Floorball. He was able to rally his team to set aside differences and make decisions that best suited the team. For his hard work, he was chosen to represent the school at the National School Games (NSG) ‘A’ Division Floorball Championships in 2022.
Yida takes responsibility for his own learning and inspires others to do the same. In 2021, he took the initiative to participate in the Physics Olympiad where he honed his mental agility as well as his time management skills.
Ethan is a conscientious and self-motivated student who constantly sought to improve in his studies throughout his time in CJC. He managed his time well and was an independent learner. He was able to voice his opinions or clarify his doubts in class to facilitate his own learning and thus benefited others in the process. He did well in Project Work, for which he scored a distinction at the GCE A-Level examination in November 2021. Ethan also did well in his science subjects, namely, Chemistry and Biology.
Ethan was passionate about sports and community service. He was an active member of his Co-curricular Activity (CCA), Football. He proved to be a strong team player who worked cohesively with his teammates during practices and competitions. He trained hard and was enthusiastic about improving his skills. He learned that trust and communication were important for his team to play well on the pitch. His interest in physical activities led his teachers to select him as the Sports Leader for his class — a role which he performed competently.
Ethan is an observant and reflective individual. He was polite to his teachers and helpful to his classmates. He is mature, sets realistic goals for himself and strives to achieve them. He is open to advice and welcomes new experiences. He hopes to pursue Dentistry at the university and use his skills to help society and join social service missions to less developed communities.
Millicent is a conscientious, and highly capable student where all subjects are concerned. She displays a marked ability to competently engage with subjects that demand both literacy and numeracy with equal ease. Her most favourite area of academic inquiry is General Paper, given its focus on global issues, and its engagement with philosophical ideas. Its wide-ranging concerns and diversity of topics also greatly appealed to her equally wide-ranging intellectual curiosity.
Where Co-Curricular Activities were concerned, Millicent was an active and committed member of the college Oratorical Society. She sharpened her argumentative and public speaking skills during training sessions.
Millicent was also appointed as Assistant Home Tutorial Councillor (AHTC), and in this capacity, among the many duties she had to assume, she took charge of strategically planning, steering, and implementing the class Service Learning Project (2021). Her capable leadership and meticulous planning ensured that the project ran smoothly.
Ryan is an effective communicator and an inquisitve individual with a strong desire to expand his intellectual boundaries. He contributed insightful and well-informed views during class discussions. Tenacious and diligent, Ryan excelled in his academic endeavours during his time in CJC. He was one of the top scorers in his cohort for the JC1 Promotional Examination.
As the Secretary of the Oratorical Society, Ryan was focused and efficient. He participated in numerous debate competitions where he honed his capacity for logical reasoning and persuasive argumentation.
Calista held the position of Vice-President of the debating wing of the Oratorical Society. Apart from being a skillful public speaker and debater, she was also a competent leader. Her responsibilities included planning debate-related sessions and acting as the main point of contact for competitions. Given her public speaking skills, Calista was often the emcee and facilitator for school-wide events. In addition, Calista developed her leadership skills and served the college community by taking on the role of Orientation Group Leader for the 2022 JC1 cohort.
Calista’s capacity for critical reasoning is reflected in her commendable General Paper essays. As a further testimony to flair for writing, she obtained second position for her philosophy essay in the annual World Philosophy Day Essay writing competition organised by the college. Calista has also shown her academic prowess by performing consistently at the top of her cohort for overall results and especially for General Paper.
Tiffany expresses herself confidently and eloquently and is energised by intellectually-stimulating ideas. She is vocal and respectful when articulating her thoughts and engages deeply with others in discussions.
Tiffany was a member of the Student Council and served in the Community Involvement Wing. Her duties involved planning college-wide events, and facilitating communication between the student body, teachers, and the school leaders. Notably, she led the organisation of the college’s Co-Curricular Activity (CCA) Bazaar, which showcased the various CCAs and college spirit to the freshly-inducted JC1 students. Her keenness to contribute to the mentoring and induction of her juniors also compelled her to volunteer her services as an Orientation Group Leader. During the entire course of the orientation programme, she exhibited the ability to connect with others effectively. She was able to engage the students confidently and built a strong sense of camaraderie amongst them by the end of the programme.
Hannah is part of the College’s Ignite Programme, which has allowed her the unique opportunity to explore interdisciplinary learning and to grow as an active contributor to her community.
As a member of the Guitar Ensemble, Hannah’s Co-Curricular Activity (CCA), she represented the school at the Singapore Youth Festival Arts Presentation in 2021, and the ensemble successfully clinched a Distinction. Despite being a novice at playing the guitar, Hannah did not back down from the challenge, and worked doubly hard at mastering the pieces to keep up with her seniors. Hannah displayed diligence and consistency, and a strong willingness to work collaboratively with her fellow CCA members. She performed her role as the Secretary and Treasurer of her CCA with aplomb. Together with her fellow Executive Committee (EXCO) members, Hannah took charge of CCA sessions and organised performances as part of college events.
Hannah’s leadership ability was also demonstrated through her role as an Orientation Group Leader (OGL) in 2022. Hannah took on the responsibility of guiding the incoming J1s during their first week of school, bringing out her warm and enthusiastic side. Hannah was able to build a strong rapport with her juniors and was a dependable and friendly mentor.
Heraldo was an exemplary student who took ownership of his learning and set high standards for himself. Heraldo was placed on the Principal’s Honour Roll in Term 1 in 2021 and received the award for outstanding academic performance for the Promotional Exams in 2021. He remained consistent in his academic endeavours and went on to receive the award for outstanding academic performance for the JC2 Mid-Year Examinations in 2022. To stretch his learning further,
Heraldo participated in the Singapore Physics League Competition in 2022 where he gained many useful insights after competing against more than a hundred teams. Heraldo was a member of the College’s Swimming Club. Despite the tough nature of the sport which requires intense physical training and resilience, Heraldo persevered and took on the additional responsibility of planning training exercises for his team. Heraldo was the class Pastoral Care Councillor, a role he was nominated for by his classmates due to his friendly disposition. To cater to the needs of his class, Heraldo was often tasked to give presentations on a range of topics such as mental health and bullying. Heraldo was also heavily involved in the implementation of Autism Awareness Week in the college.
Jian Wen is a reflective learner who is earnest and always keen to improve. His proficiency in using appropriate mathematical and scientific principles to solve problems earned him an opportunity to represent the college at the 33rd Singapore Chemistry Olympiad and the 34th Singapore Physics Olympiad in 2021. In addition, he was awarded the Edusave Merit Bursary and the Edusave Certificate of Academic Achievement in 2021 in recognition of his strong academic achievements.
During his time in CJC, Jian Wen was awarded the Certificate of Academic Achievement and placed on the Principal’s Honour Roll in recognition of his strong academic achievements in the Mid-Year Examinations in 2021. His positive attitude towards learning won him several other achievements such as the Certificate of Academic Achievement for H2 Physics and H1 Economics in 2021. He was also awarded the Academic Award for Excellence in H2 Physics and was placed on the Principal’s Honour Roll in the Promotional Examinations in 2021 and the Mid-Year Examinations in 2022.
Despite his heavy academic workload, Jian Wen took time to serve the class and the wider community. He volunteered to lead his Project Work group and was also part of his Class Management Committee (CMC); in addition, he played an active role in his CCA, Basketball. His dedication to Basketball as a sport was evident in the effort he put in for every training session.
Mervin was a well-motivated student who possessed a keen interest in learning. At his own initiative, he attended Harvard’s CS50 course on Computer Science. Independently, he read up on effective study methods from award-winning books and watched online videos on how to improve productivity. A reflective learner, he constantly adjusted his revision strategies to cope with the demands of the A-level curriculum.
Mervin also honed his interpersonal and communication skills during his Co-Curricular Activity, the Strategy Games Club, and through his class-based service learning project in collaboration with Calvary Community Care. Pandemic-induced limitations that affected the frequency or quality of in-person interactions was a challenge he faced, but he still found ways to enjoy his time with others and encourage them through tough times. During his time in CJC, Mervin has developed more awareness of his own potential and ability to positively impact the lives of others.
Lynette is a confident and critical thinker who possesses a strong flair for writing. Her essays, which are fluent and insightful, are a joy to read.
Lynette was a member of the college’s Interact Club, where she served as the International Understanding Director. Her duties involved heading the 2021 Cambodian Young Farmers Project as well as working together with the rest of her Executive Committee members to plan weekly Co-Curricular (CCA) sessions. The CCA required heavy commitment, honing her ability to manage the planning of numerous projects simultaneously. Initiating projects gave her the confidence to lead and speak in front of her members, and her CCA peers grew to express their respect for her.
In addition, Lynette participated in a six-month project, “Trigen”, which brought students together with healthcare professionals to make home visits to the homes of elderly with dementia. As part of the project, she and her peers devised an application that colourcoded other applications on a mobile phone according to function to help seniors identify them easily. Lynette’s experience in the Interact Club has spurred her interest to pursue a career in the areas of social work and psychology.
Dang Hoang Anh Khoa is very diligent in achieving his goals, as he is able to focus and persevere to see them through. He is receptive to feedback and works hard towards self-improvement. He also proved himself to be a capable leader as the Home Tutorial Councillor (HTC) of his class.
Khoa’s favourite subject is Physics as he has always been fascinated by how the subject explains the various phenomena in everyday life and allows him to solve challenging problems. In pursuit of his passion, Khoa managed to offer H3 Physics and also participated in the Singapore Physics Olympiad. He has become more well-informed about global issues due to the lessons he attended that were part of the Ignite Programme. Khoa has also improved in his ability to express his thoughts more clearly and precisely, as he learnt about the importance of effective communication.
In the future, Khoa would like to pursue a career in engineering or architecture. He hopes to put his talents to good use by improving the lives of others through his skill sets. As someone who has a strong sense of purpose and genuine care for others, Khoa embodies the college values of being a Thinker with a Mission, Leader with a Heart.

The Harvard Prize Book award is presented to promising students all around the world who go beyond the call of duty to show kindness and care to others. With its origins dating back to 1910, the Harvard Prize Book award recognises promising young service leaders who have inspired others to engage in authentic and sustainable acts of kindness.
Nivish has been commended for his contributions to the college community as well as his involvement in his neighbourhood. Robocup Asia-Pacific (RCAP) CoSpace Autonomous
Two teams from CJC participated in the Robocup AsiaPacific (RCAP) CoSpace Autonomous Driving Challenges where they each programmed autonomous vehicles to navigate through a smart city in both real and virtual environments. Team Ignition (Dang Vu Hai Dang and Max Liu Yufeng) and Team Chromium (Nicole Tan Ziyi, Neo Rui Feng Nigel and See Zhe An Bryan) achieved First and Third place respectively.
Gwyneth Tan (2T05, Class of 2022)
Gwyneth Tan (2T05, Class of 2022) received the Merit Award for the 2023 Edwin Thumboo Prize. The prestigious prize, awarded by NUS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, recognises only three pre-university students annually for excellence in literary criticism.
Gwyneth’s wonderful essay explored, at length, the presentation of temporality in shaping selfhood in James Joyce’s “A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.” Her achievement is a testament to her love for English Literature and maturity of thought.
One of our J2 teams participated in the International Space Challenge (Starter Category). They attained a Merit award for their efforts. This marks the first time that CJC has attained an award at this competition.
The daVinci@SUTD STEAMxD Immersion Programme 2023, an MOE-funded STEAMxD (STEAM = Science, Technology, Environment, Engineering, Arts, and Math, and D = Design) workshop, took place in January 2023. There were participating students from 18 different Junior Colleges and Integrated Programme (IP) schools.
Rayner Wan (2T28) attained the Top Team and Best Innovative Solution awards for the Drone Technologies track while Hazel Ngo (2T25) attained the Certificate of Participation for her involvement in the AI Robots track.

The CJC team worked collaboratively to understand and apply mathematics to a realworld problem. For the second year in a row, the team has achieved a Distinction, putting CJC in the same league as NUS High School of Mathematics and Science and Hwa Chong Institution!

Designing with TI Graphing Calculators
The TI Graphing Calculators Competition requires students to come up with original designs using a graphing calculator. Dang Vu Hai Dang (1T28) attained the Bronze award for his innovative design that aims to raise awareness of the dangers of hacking. Five other CJ students attained the Certificate of Participation.
The Caritate Award is a peer-nominated award that recognises acts of service carried out by students in truth and love. It seeks to affirm CJCians who have made a positive contribution in the community. The donor of the Caritate Award is Mr. Tan Tee How, a CJC alumnus (Class of 1977). He is currently the chairman of the National Healthcare Group and Gambling Regulatory Authority of Singapore, and holds board appointments in multiple companies.
20 students represented CJC at the annual cybersecurity competition,Cyberthon,on 29 April this year. Cyberthon 2023 is the 5th edition of the annual capture-the-flag competition jointly organised by Hwa Chong Institution (HCI), Centre for Strategic Infocomm Technologies (CSIT) and Defence Cyber Organisation (DCO). This is part of ongoing efforts to nurture young talents in cybersecurity. Out of more than 150 teams, one of our teams attained a Top 10 position. This is the best showing from CJC in the last 5 years.

2023 CJC Archbishop Scholarship (JC1)
In developing every CJCian as a Thinker with a Mission, Leader with a Heart, CJC’s Student Development (SD) programme works hand in hand with the college’s academic programmes to ensure holistic student development. The SD programme uses the social change model of leadership (Astin & Astin, 1996) as a framework that guides us as we nurture students to develop in the domain of
reflective disposition and are brought through a deepening spiral of growth that helps them discover and strengthen their talents and interests (self), build meaningful relationships (others) and to eventually be equipped to make a positive change to the community and world around them (community).
In CJC, we value meaningful relationships and recognise their importance in the overall growth and well-being of our students. Every CJCian is part of a Home Tutorial class which is the basic unit designed to foster a sense of belonging in students throughout their twoyear CJC experience. Under the mentorship of a Home Tutor, each Home Tutorial class journeys together, building strong bonds of friendship in the process, and challenging each person to grow to become the best versions of themselves possible. Every Home Tutorial group is part of a larger House System where students are placed under the leadership of teachers as House Masters and student leaders as House Leaders. This system builds team, house and community spirit.
Developing emotional resilience in students and fostering an inclusive college community have been our key areas of focus. A strong belief
in the importance of pastoral care undergirds different programmes that support students’ mental health. The Pastoral Care Councillors (PCCs) take the lead in effecting positive changes in the areas of mental health, peer support, and inclusion within the college community. The PCCs are trained in the essential skills of peer counselling such as identifying signs of distress, listening actively and exercising empathy. These skills enable them to provide emotional support to their classmates. The PCCs also actively engage their classmates in discussions about mental health and stress management during Friday morning BEAR sessions.
BEAR stands for “build emotional and academic resilience.” To instil emotional and academic resilience in students, Home Tutors engage in one-to-one conversations with students which follow the Reflective Cycle; ExperienceReflection-Action framework of our college. These frequent interactions between students and their Home Tutors outside of formal lessons help students feel validated, supported and confident in overcoming challenges.
CJC students attend weekly SD sessions within their Home Tutorial groups or Religious Education Programme groups. These sessions serve as part of CJC’s holistic development programme which enables students to discover the connection between self, others and the wider community. Sessions in the programme focus on character and values formation, personal leadership skills, developing individual and group strengths, citizenship education, sexuality education and religious and moral education. Underpinning these programmes is an emphasis on helping students develop a growth mindset in order to develop the belief that each student’s strengths can be developed through openness to experiences and purposeful effort. Circle time pedagogy is adopted during these lessons to build a sense of community amongst teachers and students and to build emotionally and academically resilient individuals who possess the dispositions of servant leaders.
The two-year SD Curriculum Programme begins with allowing students to understand and develop themselves as all-rounded individuals, followed by an extended focus on building and managing interpersonal relationships and finally, allowing them to understand the positive impact they can have on the wider community. The classroom sessions with their Home Tutors challenge students to think critically about complex societal issues and also equip them with the tools to make their own moral decisions.
Religious Education Programme (REP)
CJC’s Religious Education Programme (REP) adopts an inclusive approach which takes CJCians on a road of deeper discovery of the self, community and wider world around them through the eyes of faith. The REP comprises lessons and annual retreats that encourage students to seek God and discover their purpose in life.
Our REP begins with the JC1 Retreat that takes place at the start of every JC1 year. It introduces students to the spiritual formation programme in CJC and provides them with the opportunity to reflect on the changes that are happening as they make the transition to a junior college. There is of course a social dimension to the Retreat as interaction time is provided to help the JC1 participants build bonds with one another. In 2023, the theme of the JC1 Retreat was ‘Illumine’. The Retreat comprised a series of sessions across different academic subjects based on the theme of finding God in the midst of the students’ academic endeavours.
Our REP lessons, which run at intervals in both the JC1 and JC2 years, challenge students to grow their faith in multiple dimensions. We explore issues like relationships, personal vocations, and even moral dilemmas. Our aim is to help every CJCian find their personal identity through the eyes of faith and to inspire them to be the change they wish to see in the world.
REP in CJC culminates with a two-day JC2 Retreat at the end of the JC2 year. All JC2 students are welcome to attend this retreat, which is a significant milestone that marks the end of their time in CJC and provides an opportunity for them to reflect and renew their strength for the GCE A-Level examinations. In 2023, the theme of the JC2 Retreat was ‘Arise’. A safe space was created for all participants to reflect on their life journeys, particularly the time spent in CJC, and to deepen their relationship with God and the community through guided reflections, prayer, and sharing. A key takeaway from the Retreat was for the students to look beyond what they were experiencing at present, and to recognise that there is life beyond their time in Catholic Junior College.
The National Education programmes this year aimed to develop students who are socially aware, adept at critical thinking, and wellinformed about local, regional, and global issues. On Total Defence Day, the JC2 Ignite Students conducted a cohort sharing on the topic of Food Security, which was related to the theme of their Ignite Conference in 2022, to raise awareness of various ongoing efforts to strengthen Singapore’s food resilience, as well as challenge their peers to adopt sustainable habits in their daily lives. During International Friendship Day, students reflected on the importance for Singapore to maintain good relationships with other countries while standing firm on the need to uphold international law and agreements. On Racial Harmony Day (RHD), students came in their ethnic attire and participated in a series of traditional games and RHD-themed activities planned by the CJC Student Council.
It was truly a colourful and memorable celebration of diversity! Finally, the 2023 National Day Celebrations promoted a stronger sense of togetherness through inter-house competitions and a singalong session of National Day songs. Students also enjoyed a concert that featured vibrant performances from the CJC Dance Club and Guitar Ensemble.
As part of the yearly Senior Servant dialogues with our students, the Senior Minister of State, Dr. Janil Puthucheary, engaged the JC2 cohort on important national and societal issues regarding mental health, diversity and inclusion to help students understand the complexities of building a more supportive culture in Singapore. In addition, Ambassador Selvarajah engaged our JC1 cohort on the principles that guide Singapore’s foreign policy and Singapore’s relations with other states on a regional and global level.
Leadership development is an important feature of the SD programme. In CJC, we believe that every CJCian must develop as a leader regardless of whether they have a title or position. Leadership starts with the self: one has to develop self-awareness, self-discipline, and the capacity for self-reflection. Our student leadership development permeates across all students at various tiers: Home Tutorial Groups (Class Management Committee), CoCurricular Activities, the House System, and at the highest level, the Student Council. Our student leadership development programme is anchored on the goal of developing every CJCian to be a Thinker with a Mission and Leader with a Heart (TMLH). Training and mentorship opportunities are provided to help our leaders develop the 7 TMLH attributes: integrity, discernment, resilience, initiative, humility, purpose and being nurturing, through programmes like the Class Management Committee (CMC) Training Programmes, JC1 Leadership Training Camp and the JC1 Leaders’ Dialogue. These programmes are supported by both teachers and alumni.

The first training session focuses on providing them with a platform to envision the class culture they would like to cultivate, as well as formulate their leadership philosophy in order to discover and develop their potential as leaders.

The second day started with a bang with a trek to the nearby quarry and an amazing race around the Botanic Gardens. After the second 360 feedback and reflections session, the LTC culminated with a closing ceremony to mark the beginning of the students’ leadership journey in CJC, where the JC1 student leaders with their different talents, abilities and aspirations were called together as “One Flame One Family” to serve and ‘Be The Light’ for the CJ community and beyond.
This LTC provided our JC1 student leaders with opportunities to develop their leadership capabilities and hone their communication, organisational and interpersonal skills. It also provided them with a suitable platform for self-discovery and served as a checkpoint where they could reflect on their individual leadership strengths and weaknesses thus far. More importantly, this LTC helped to develop stronger relationships between the student leaders.
Conducted in-person by an external vendor specialising in strengths-based profiling and the socioemotional development of students, this Strengths-based Leadership Workshop marked the mid-point of our students’ leadership journey in CJC. This workshop helped student leaders to understand the fundamentals of leadership as they worked towards developing their 2024 work plans for their respective
classes, CCAs and Houses.
Our student leaders in CJC play significant roles in contributing to the culture of the College. Anchoring on the 4 ‘C’s—College Identity, College Vibrancy, Culture of Care, and College Facilities and Infrastructure—the 49th Student Council facilitated the annual Leaders’ Dialogue, bringing together the organisational leaders comprising the House EXCO, CMC members (HTCs, AHTCs and PCCs) and leaders of all CCA groups, to discuss the challenges they face and identify possible areas for improvement. After which, the student leaders regrouped to discuss their respective work plans that can possibly be incorporated to close the identified gaps for the following year. This dialogue provides a platform for our student leaders to come together collaboratively to create a culture which values the voices of all students, and grants opportunities to all students to lead, serve and develop.

The CJC Ignite Programme seeks to develop critical and creative thinkers with social consciousness. Primarily, this is achieved through integral learning, inviting students to make connections across disparate fields and topics of learning. This interdisciplinary approach lends itself naturally to inquiry-led, concept-based, and problem-solving learning approaches, challenging students to be active and inquisitive learners.
The programme is anchored in pedagogically diverse lessons aimed at achieving these outcomes, and augmented by milestone programmes—the Ignite Local Service Learning Project (LSLP) and the Ignite Conference— which provide real-world learning and allow Ignite students to apply and showcase their growth in the programme. The Ignite Programme is offered to students selected for their academic potential and dispositional fit to the programme’s objectives.
In the classroom, students are challenged to think beyond the syllabus, to engage with their learning conceptually, and to form inter- and intra-disciplinary connections. Students are encouraged to question actively and challenged to take the lead in their learning.
In the 2023 Ignite Curriculum, students explored the theme of “Future Cities, Resilient Communities”. Students examined future possibilities for Singapore through the lens of cultural continuity and adaptation, diversity of stakeholders and urban design.
In March 2023, all four JC1 Ignite classes embarked on learning journeys to Whampoa to learn about how ecosystems of support can help communities. 1T06, 1T27 and 1T28 also applied their learning to local service learning projects with Whampoa Family Service Centre, the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) and NTUC Health Senior Citizen.
1T05 pursued a project related to cultural continuity: the Oral Histories of CJC trailblazers. They interviewed past CJCians on how they have embodied CJC values, so that these interviews can continue to inspire future CJC students.
Continuing the momentum of interdisciplinary learning, the 2023 Ignite Conference featured a learning journey within the Ang Mo Kio neighbourhood. This was facilitated by our partner, Skillseed, and the National Youth Council (NYC). Students also interacted with community leaders to hear about groundup community development initiatives. The conference culminated in an Ideathon, where
participants competed in designing future possibilities for the city.
The challenges of the future and the difficulties of recent years are well-known. In preparing for the future and adapting to disruptions, the Ignite Programme resists stagnation and embraces the notion that learning can occur in various inventive forms. It continues to evolve and much more awaits.
In its time of office from 2022-2023, the 48th Student Council, led by Council President, Aqil Aufa Bin Muhammad Taufik, was instrumental in facilitating numerous initiatives and events that were no longer restricted by COVID-19 regulations. These initiatives and events were aligned with the College’s theme ‘Hearts Ablaze: One Flame, One Family’. On the whole, the Student Council aimed to provide platforms for greater inclusiveness within the CJC community.
Organised into three wings, namely the Catholic Activities Wing, the Community Involvement Wing as well as the Student Activities Wing, the 48th Student Council focused on being a bridge between College management, the student body and the external community. What united the 48th Student Council was its common goal to serve the College community in truth and in love by upholding the standards and legacies of our predecessors and enacting positive changes.
2023 JC1 Orientation
This year’s 2023 Orientation theme was aptly named “Orion: Light Up Your Path”. Orion is a constellation and also a wordplay on “Orientation”. As the incoming JC1s embarked on their new journey in CJC, they were called to rise to the occasion in their first week in college, and to participate to the best of their abilities while discovering more about CJ and its culture. Orion started the true CJ way, with our Orientation Group Leaders (OGLs) lining up the corridors to warmly welcome all to the CJ family.
Orion was a great hunter who, after his death, was honoured with a constellation that remains prominent and visible throughout the world.
The Orion constellation is made up of 32 bright stars. However, due to an explosive supernova, Orion split apart and lost its stars in the CJ galaxy, where it could disappear forever.
From the 3rd to 9th of February, the JC1s were inducted into CJC, where Orion quickly summoned the galaxy’s finest heroes: the four stars Alphard, Polaris, Zosma and Maia, representing the CJC attributes of Resilience, Discernment, Initiative and Nurturing respectively. Throughout the Orientation programme, their goal was to look for the missing stars and bring them together to enable Orion to shine brightly once again.
The Orientation planning committee, comprising five members from the 48th Student Council and headed by the 48th Council President, took a leap of faith in resuming the programme “Space Voyage” at an external venue—the 100Plus Promenade at the Singapore Sports Hub.
The Orientation programme also included the House-based “Amazing Race” which was facilitated by the JC2 Sports Leaders, providing them with opportunities to lead the JC1s in an interactive session to introduce the College’s House system. The JC1s were also given platforms to experience CJ’s reflective culture through daily reflections as well as the Mandala- making session. Orientation ended on a high note with the return of wet games (“GalaxSea”) as well as the Finale where Orion’s stars were found, culminating in the restoration of the CJ galaxy.
The JC1 cohort and their OGLs shared a few emotional moments together at the finale, encouraged one another to be fearless in facing the challenges ahead and promised to support one another in truth and in love.
Last year, CJC held our inaugural Mental Wellness Week (MWW), which helped the school clinch the Silver Ribbon Mental Health Award for 2022. In 2023, MWW became a college tradition as we continue to recognise the importance of mental wellness especially in a post-COVID 19 world. This year, the school organised a wide range of activities as part of Mental Wellness week.

“Fully Alive” (JC1 REP Session during Orientation
Inspired by the words of St. Irenaeus—”The glory of God is man fully alive”—the CA Wing organised the opening Religious Education Programme (REP) session during Orientation 2023 on 7 February 2023. Assisted by JC2 students from Genesis, our student leaders welcomed all JC1 Catholic students and introduced them to the College’s various Catholic activities. Testimonies, reflective music, and small-group sharing gave JC1s an insight into how the Catholic faith is experienced and shared in CJC.
The annual Lenten Project is a major event for the CA Wing—not only because of the religious significance of Lent, but also because of the opportunities it offers for collaboration with multiple parties. It begins on Ash Wednesday and ends the day before Easter Sunday. This year, the CA Wing planned an extensive programme that included Stations of the Cross, weekly special reflections and prayers during morning assembly, a foyer exhibition, as well as the highlight—Lenten Evening—which took place on Friday, 31 March 2023.
The 48th and 49th cohorts of the Catholic Activities Wing collaborated to organise the annual Easter Project on the week after Easter Sunday. Featuring games, puzzles, and trivia activities that were conducted in the canteen and foyer, this event aimed to share the good news of Christ’s resurrection with the general student body through a light-hearted approach. The highlight of the week was the college-wide Easter Egg Hunt that saw students from both levels enthusiastically searching for brightlycoloured easter eggs—an apt symbol of new life—hidden at various locations around the school. In the spirit of sharing the Easter joy, prizes awaited those who successfully collected the eggs.
The Community Involvement (CI) Wing aims to serve as the conduit, connecting students with College management and fostering ties between the College and the wider community. Embracing the belief that each CJCian can contribute to the overall welfare of the College, the Wing strives to involve as many students as possible in college-wide events, with the goal of empowering them to be effective servant leaders.
The 48th CI Wing organised the annual dialogue session for over 200 organisational student leaders to address key issues related to college identity, college vibrancy, the creation of a culture of Care and college facilities. It proved to be a significant and fruitful occasion as CJC’s community of student leaders gathered to explore potential strategies for enhancing the CJC experience at various levels, including class, CCA, House, and the College as a whole. It was also a good networking session as student leaders from different backgrounds got to know each other better and formed friendships. Through this platform, student leaders were invited to actively contribute to solutions, engaging in detailed discussions on various issues to identify feasible ways to further improve the CJ experience, as well as to concretise their work plans for the upcoming year.
In 2023, the 48th CI Wing oversaw the transition from an e-Open House in 2022 back to a faceto-face format, just like in pre-COVID 19 times. The Wing maintained its traditional role of connecting with the external community, offering them insights into the CJC experience, and igniting the interest of prospective students in the diverse opportunities for leadership and growth available in CJC.
The CI Wing collaborated effectively with various student leaders, teachers and members of College management. The outcome was a dynamic and memorable Open House experience which featured tours of the campus, interactive panel discussions, live
performances, and vibrant CCA booths. This was successful in bringing together the entire college community. Many of the CCA booths also organised experience stations which enabled visitors to try out the activities offered by the CCA. The Performing Arts CCAs put up engaging live performances in the piazza and canteen. Furthermore, having two customised tour routes—the Student Life Focused route and the Academic Focused route—allowed visitors to choose the area of College life that they would like to find out more about.
The Student Activities Wing aims to foster a vibrant college environment by organising memorable school events.
Graduation Day 202 was organised for the graduating cohort of 2022 to celebrate the end of their CJC chapter. The tradition of holding a pageant for the graduating cohort was continued this year which enthused the graduating students; in addition, a graduation carnival was organised to enliven the proceedings.
2022 also saw the birth of CJTok, our very own CJC TikTok channel. Funny and creative TikTok videos have been uploaded to the channel to foster a stronger school identity in CJC.
Rockafella XVII: Reborn was also held in April 2023 with an overwhelming attendance of 700 students and staff, exemplifying our strong CJC spirit and identity. This rock concert tradition provides a platform to showcase CJC talents, and this year there were even special performances including dance items and a magic show! It was also heartwarming to have our very own teachers’ band, as well as our alumni band, to further boost the enthusiasm of the crowd.
“Reborn” was chosen as the theme of the event to encapsulate the importance of restoring our College’s vibrancy after the pandemic. Rockafella XVII truly delivered this. the programme’s objectives.

The migrant workers play an important role in the development of Singapore and its economy. As migrant workers are the backbone of Singapore’s construction, marine shipyard and process sectors, it is crucial to take care of them to ensure that Singapore remains competitive despite its limited workforce.
This Global Leadership Programme (OSLP) teaches students to work collaboratively with migrant workers by exposing them to some key challenges migrant workers face in Singapore. In the process of interacting with migrant workers, students learn the value of cultural humility. Students are encouraged to engage in an ongoing process of inquiry and selfawareness to consider how power and privilege shape different social systems and realities for migrant workers.
In addition, a community-based walk in Farrer Park co-led by migrant workers highlights its social and cultural significance as an important social node for the migrant workers. The walk includes a food-tasting experience at a Bangladeshi eatery with dishes introduced by the migrant workers.
Students also had the privilege of enjoying a performance by the Migrant Dancers Singapore dance troupe, followed by a short dialogue session with migrant dancers themselves, where students learned that inclusivity can be realised through forming genuine relationships and meeting tangible needs.
The programme ended with students presenting their ideas to the migrant workers as well as representatives from Here With You Social Services and Soap Cycling Singapore, followed by in-depth discussions on concrete steps of action to foster inclusivity.
Through this programme, students have deepened their understanding of the challenges faced by the migrant worker community in an evolving Singapore context. They have also garnered insights into a range of migrant worker-related issues, policies and perspectives through discussions and interactions with people of different backgrounds and areas of expertise.
With a changing world where globalisation, technology and intellectual capitalisation dominate and recreate a new world order, villages like Kanchang Koy in Cambodia are facing the pressures of modern society where education is seen as an important asset.
With globalisation, the technological revolution has become more relevant than ever in a child’s education. Many children in rural Cambodia lack access to technology especially during the pandemic which saw the prominence of online education, distance learning, flexible learning and e-learning taking over traditional ways of learning. The gap between rural and urban education will widen further unless steps are taken to teach children living in rural areas how to use technology.
The Global Leadership Programme (Cambodia), also known as the ‘Basic Computer Project’, hopes to provide basic computing knowledge for local Cambodian girls in Kanchang Koy. This
project is quite revolutionary for the girls as it may be the first time ever that they have seen a laptop. Through this programme, our CJC students imparted their knowledge of some basic English phrases and basic computer skills.
The programme was held online over Zoom over three days and consisted of three different segments. The first segment focused on teaching the Cambodian participants basic English followed by a quiz to test their understanding. The second segment involved teaching the participants how to use basic digital platforms such as Google Documents, Google Excel Sheet and the Google search engine. The third segment provided the participants with the skills to use basic functions on Google Slides. This was followed by a farewell session between the participants and our CJC student facilitators.
All in all, the project was impactful as it enriched the perspectives of our CJCians who learnt more about Cambodia.
In a world that increasingly recognises the importance of sustainable practices, Singapore stands at the forefront, exemplifying a commitment to balanced and responsible growth and development. Designed to blend theoretical knowledge with practical experiences, this three-day Economics-General Paper Stretch programme helped students to understand how sustainability is understood across the different sectors in Singapore. Each day, we engaged in expert-led talks and engaging interactive sessions. The inclusion of site visits to exemplary establishments added a hands-on dimension, allowing us to witness sustainable practices in action.
Highlights of this programme included talks on
the impact of FinTech as well as the changes in the Labour Market where we gleaned insights from Mr Bernard Soo and Associate Professor Walter Theseira respectively. We learned about how financial technology affects other financial institutions, the effects of immigration and the ways in which migrants contribute to Singapore’s cultural richness. We visited TOMRA, a leading player in sustainable waste management, which gave us an opportunity to witness Singapore’s commitment to a circular economy. We saw how waste can be transformed into valuable resources through cutting-edge technologies and strategic initiatives. We also enjoyed a tour around URA City Gallery which featured urban planning challenges and innovative solutions. Additionally, we went on an urban farm tour
at City Sprouts, learning about Singapore’s advancements in urban agriculture, vertical farming and the potential of alternative foods. This tour provided a firsthand experience of the enterprise’s attempts to rejuvenate new urban spaces as well to make Singapore more sustainable and food independent.
We were consistently encouraged to think critically about the implementation of sustainability practices in diverse contexts, and also gained useful perspectives on how economics, technological innovations and societal preferences mesh together to shape our approach to sustainability. In essence, this
stretch programme went above and beyond the limitations of traditional classroom learning. It provided us with a dynamic platform to connect our learnt knowledge with real-world challenges, engendering a deeper appreciation through the fields of General Paper and Economics. The skills and insights we acquired positioned us as informed, critical thinkers who are ready to contribute meaningfully to Singapore’s future in sustainable development.

From 23 to 29 November 2023, selected students from the JC1 H2 Geography and History cohort of Catholic Junior College (CJC) embarked on an eye-opening cultural immersion programme to Vietnam. With heartfelt blessings from our incoming Principal. Mrs Woo Soo Min, and Vice-Principal (Academic) Mrs Poon Wai Chin, the students departed from Singapore to Hanoi, brimming with excitement for the learning experiences to come.
The first key event of the programme was a visit to Tran Phu-Hoan Kiem (TPHK) High School, a partner school of CJC since 2019. The CJC students were greeted by the warm hospitality of the Vietnamese students and teachers, who treated them to performances, a lesson simulation, and a delectable traditional dish for lunch—bun cha. The TPHK students then guided the CJC students through the Hanoi Old Quarter, assisting in their geography fieldwork to investigate the liveability of various areas. Before bidding their new friends farewell, the CJC students put up a dance performance in the school hall, followed by a gift exchange
between the two schools.
The next day, the CJC students visited the Hoa Lo Prison Museum, first built by the French to house Vietnamese political prisoners and then used during the Vietnam War for American prisoners of war. The poignant exhibits raised questions about historical narratives, extending their thinking beyond the classroom. Thereafter, the students embarked on an exciting geographical investigation at Ha Long Bay. Lunch was enjoyed on a boat that sailed slowly through the breathtaking karst landscapes, piquing students’ curiosity about their formation. They then explored the Thien Cung limestone caves, where they examined the stunning stalactites and stalagmites, and weighed the significance of the physical and human factors influencing the natural landscape.
The fourth day began with a visit to the mangrove ecosystem at Xuan Thuy National Park in Nam Dinh. Students had a firsthand experience of the ecological significance of mangroves, deepening their understanding of their role in coastal protection and biodiversity.
After an exciting boat ride to a sandbar, the students picked clams, enjoyed the beautiful scenery, and even cleaned up the beach. This exploration of local aquaculture continued the next day when they visited a local prawn farm and tried their hand at prawning. This activity rounded up their experience in North Vietnam.
Day 6 began in Ho Chi Minh City, where the students visited the Reunification Palace and the War Remnants Museum. Both of these sites offered profound insights into the country’s tumultuous socio-political history, particularly during and after the Vietnam War. After lunch, the students visited the VietnamSingapore Industrial Park (VSIP) and learned about Vietnam’s stunning economic growth since the 1990s. This raised questions about the intersections between the economy, history, and geography of Vietnam, as well as the possibility of achieving sustainable and inclusive economic growth.
The final day brought contrasting emotions: first, the excitement of exploring the Cu Chi Tunnels,
part of a large network of tunnels that were the Viet Cong’s base of operations during the Vietnam War. The students crawled through a section of the tunnels and learned about the inventive traps and survival methods used during the war, gaining a visceral understanding of Vietnam’s wartime struggles, innovation, and resilience. Afterwards, a poignant visit to the Mai Am Thien Duyen Orphanage sensitised the students to the lasting effects of the war. They interacted with children and adults suffering from deformities caused by exposure to Agent Orange, evoking deep empathy and a recognition of the long-term impacts of war.
The immersive journey concluded with a flight back to Singapore. Though only 7 days long, the cultural exchanges, geographical and historical explorations, and emotional connections made during this programme have left an indelible mark on the CJC students, and taught them a great deal about the intersections that exist—not only within Vietnam, but across their subject disciplines.
Based on the theme ‘A more Secure and Sustainable Singapore through STEM’, the third edition of the five-day programme saw 25 JC1 Science students playing different leadership roles which included day leaders, designers, appreciation leaders and group leaders.
On the first day, the students visited the NUS School of Design and Environment 4 (SDE4) building which was the first to achieve net zero carbon in Singapore. They saw first-hand how the features of the building were purposefully designed to reduce energy usage through the application of scientific principles, clean energy and strategic choice of materials. The most popular stop was the Centre of 5G Digital Technology for Built Environment which displays state-of-the-art technology which the students could see and touch. In the afternoon, the students visited NTU School of Material Science
and Engineering, one of the top departments in the world in material science. After attending an introductory lecture, they toured laboratories in which NTU MSE undergraduate students introduced them to scientific equipment which assess various material properties. They also had a chance to witness the power of the milliondollar Scan Electron Microscope. Armed with their reflection booklet, students were seen jotting down notes actively—a testament to their desire to learn.
On day 2, the Physics students visited the Institute of Micro-Electronics in One-North where they donned protective suits to visit the semi-conductor clean room to understand how chips are manufactured and checked for defects. The Biology students visited the laboratory of the start-up company AntsInnovate where they were introduced to the science of alternative meat and had an opportunity to sample it. In
the afternoon, they learnt how private companies such as SkyGreens, which runs an urban farm, contribute to the national “30 by 30” vision. The students were impressed by how science is applied in the construction of the rotating troughs and how artificial intelligence (AI) is used to optimise the growing environment.
On day 3, the students attended a workshop run by the Singapore Fashion Council to learn about the science of creating sustainable fabric and how the fashion industry is contributing to sustainability. Through laboratory work, the students produced colourful, innovative fabrics and learnt basic sewing skills.
On day 4, Mr Lim Chye Fook (Head of Department/Mathematics) taught students how A-Level Mathematics can be used to understand climate change. In addition, the participants
had an opportunity to learn from Dr Tim Hu from ASTAR on how artificial intelligence (AI) contributes to sustainability.
Our students conducted a group STEMonstration on day 5 where they applied their learning throughout the week to propose ideas to make CJC a more sustainable place to live and learn in. The judging panel, comprising our Vice-Principal (Student Development) Mr Tan Jek Suan, Dr Tim Hu of ASTAR and Ms Tay Su Lynn (Lead teacher/Physics), were impressed by some of the concepts presented. Mr Tan, in his closing remarks, encouraged the students to be advocates of sustainability and continue to push for their ideas to be implemented.
The 5-day programme of intensive and rich learning ended with a discussion on the ethics of STEM and prize-giving.
Ahighlight of the Education and Career Guidance Programme is our Work Attachment and Shadowing Programme (WASP) and the JC Law Programme (JCLP), with the latter organised by the Singapore Academy of Law.
WASP is designed to provide JC1 students with opportunities to hone important soft skills required at the workplace. With the support of our industry partners, alumni, as well as the Parent Support Group (PSG), the College offered a diverse range of internships and attachment programmes, allowing for learning across different industries and job scopes. The JCLP is specifically organised for students to gain insights into the diverse career opportunities in the legal profession to help them make an
informed decision on whether to pursue a law degree.
To prepare for WASP and JCLP, our students first attended a Strengths-Based Career Development Workshop, guiding them to make informed choices about their career pathways in consideration of their unique talents and dispositions. Workshops covering key Education and Career Guidance (ECG) skill sets such as workplace etiquette and expectations were also provided for students under WASP and JCLP.
Through the Education and Career Guidance experience, the College seeks to boost our students’ readiness for the future. Our hope is to develop CJCians into active, contributing citizens who find meaning in their future pursuits.
cJC’s Open House took place on 13 January 2023. For the first time in years, the Open House was an in-person event. Months of meticulous planning went into organising and publicising the event. A microsite was even created to provide visitors with information about the various programmes offered by the school.
Before the clock had even struck 10 a.m., eager parents and students were already streaming into the school, and wandering among the colourfully decked out booths that were set up by the respective Co-Curricular Activities. The air was filled with excited but nervous chatter, and some of the CJCians courageously stepped forward to introduce themselves and welcome the visitors. Designated student tour guides brought the visitors around the school and shared earnestly about their experience as CJ students.
There were several activities happening simultaneously, leaving the visitors with much to see and do. In the foyer, piazza and canteen,
the various performing arts put on a series of energetic and vibrant performances that earned thunderous applause. Occasionally, powerful school and house cheers can be heard from flash mobs who enlivened the atmosphere. In various learning spaces such as the Conceptualise Space, thoughtful microlessons were held for potential students to better understand the subjects that CJC has to offer. In addition, the Principal’s talk at the Library offered useful insights about the school.
As part of the Principal’s talk, an invited alumna, Judith Tan (Class of 2021), also shared about her journey as a student leader, and how her experiences have shaped her indelibly as an individual.
What completes this unforgettable experience would undeniably be the free flow of food. Visitors were treated to an array of delectable snacks such as seaweed chicken and freshly prepared churros. Judging from the positive feedback from the visitors, this year’s event was indeed an unqualified success. By

catholic Junior College held its annual Chinese New Year celebrations on January 20, 2023. This year’s theme for the celebrations was “inclusivity,” and this theme was definitely evident through a fun-filled day of activities that incorporated elements of various cultures and different academic subjects.
The celebration kicked off in class with the energetic tossing of yusheng, followed by a mouthwatering potluck feast. Then, we made our way down to the hall, where the performances began with the loud and lively beats of a traditional lion dance performance. Our emcees then took the stage to share their personal experiences of their own cultural festivals, including the Lunar New Year and Hari Raya celebrations. The principal also delivered an inspiring speech on the symbolism of the rabbit and how those born in the year of the Rooster should embrace optimism throughout all the challenges that their A-Level year would bring. The audience was then treated to a mesmerising performance by the Guzheng
CCA of a beautiful piece titled “Spring.” An educational maths presentation followed, where CJCians learned about the lunisolar calendar and how to predict the arrival of Chinese New Year each year.
The excitement continued with thrilling interhouse competitions. This segment began with “The Price is Dui,” a Kahoot game where multi-racial teams of representatives had to guess the costs of common Chinese New Year snacks and respond to trivia questions. Next, there was a TikTok Dance Competition, where representatives from each house competed to see who could best replicate TikTok dances to popular Chinese New Year songs. When their representatives clinched the prizes, the houses broke out in spontaneous cheers, further heightening the festive atmosphere. As the celebrations came to a close, the class leaders presented oranges to the teachers, and all CJCians received fortune cookies predicting good luck for the new year ahead.
cJCatholic Junior College extended a warm welcome to the incoming JC1 students with a harmonious “WELCOME TO CJ!” on February 3rd. The Orientation Programme, Orion, helped the JC1 students to settle into college life. The students were organised into four factions—Alphard, Maia, Polaris, and Zosma—and bonded with their respective orientation groups (OGs) through icebreakers and cheers led by orientation group leaders (OGLs). These activities introduced students to the energetic spirit of the school, as students learned the CJ cheer and unique faction cheers. The OGLs then took the highspirited students on a tour of key facilities like the Piazza, Lecture Theatres (LTs), and the Performing Arts Centre (PAC).
Over the next two days, JC1s unleashed their artistic prowess as they crafted banners that reflected the identities of their respective OGs. Following this display of ingenuity, the group headed to the Auditorium for an electrifying dance-off, where they grooved to the beat of
iconic tracks—”All-Star” and “Starships”. The students then played faction games where they pitted their skills against rival OGs in an epic showdown of tenacity.
On the fourth day, students went to the Sports Hub and had an enjoyable picnic where they bonded over delicious food. Once everyone’s hunger was sated, the JC1s engaged in games hosted by alumni members. These games served as a perfect opportunity for the students to have fun and further cemented their camaraderie.
On the final day, the JC1 students donned dark apparel and participated in a series of thrilling water games with their peers from other factions. A wet and wild rendition of “Scissors, Paper, Stone,” saw students battling it out to secure points for their teams. The final day of Orion was a fitting conclusion to the orientation programme, providing the students with unforgettable memories with their newfound friends.
The Class of 2022 achieved commendable results at the 2022 GCE A-Level examinations and did themselves and the College proud. Catholic Junior College (CJC) maintained its strong value-added performance with good distinction rates across the different A-Level subjects. The school is delighted to have many CJCians realise their aspirations and qualify for reputable local and overseas institutes of higher learning.
Mrs Phyllis Lim, Principal of CJC, commended the Class of 2022 for their results and said, “you picked up the pace and seized opportunities to embrace full learning activities once the easing of Safe Management Measures took effect. Despite challenges, you displayed resilience,
innovation, and drive to embrace learning with a growth mindset and achieve outstanding results. May you continue to lead and serve as Thinkers with a Mission and Leaders with a Heart.”
Mrs Poon Wai Chin, Vice-Principal/Academic added, “our heartiest congratulations to the Class of 2022 on your good results! The many pathways that lie ahead are yours to explore. Hold fast to your dreams and aspirations, while keeping an open mind as you progress in your learning and broaden your experiences. May you demonstrate your passion in all that you do and may the spirit of continuous learning enable you to seize new opportunities and face future challenges with courage and verve.”
on 20 February 2023, CJC officially welcomed our new JC1s. The auditorium was buzzing with excitement, especially since the JC2 students had just met their buddy JC1 classes prior to the ceremony. Earlier in the morning, the seniors had led a series of icebreaker games and interactive activities to connect with their juniors, creating a lot of laughter and merriment in the process.
The ceremony began with our Principal, Mrs Phyllis Lim, sharing her aspirations for the student body. She encouraged the JC1s to get to know their classmates, CCA mates and other peers, and encouraged all students to seize opportunities to learn and grow. Mrs Lim also affirmed the hard work put in by the 48th Student Council in 2022, which included the introduction of our CJC collegiate shirt. In addition, she shared with the college community about the new study areas, cashless payment in the canteen, as well as various improvements to infrastructure in the campus. Mrs Lim mentioned that there was a record number of DSA student applications and admissions, invoking a round of applause and sense of pride among the JC2s. Many were excitedly chatting about the promising potential of the JC1 cohort and how they add to our diverse talent pool. Following this, the students were treated to
a montage created by the Film, Sound and Video Society (FSV) which depicted various key moments in the past academic year such as the Sports and Aesthetics Carnival 2022 and the 2023 JC1 Orientation programme. The JC2 audience cheered when they saw images of their peers in the TikTok dance challenge held during 2023’s Chinese New Year, and chuckled at humorous moments captured by the Film, Sound and Video CCA members.
The Welcoming and Commencement Mass then began, with Msgr. Ambrose Vaz presiding over mass, with College Chaplain, Father Justin Yip as well as Mr Alex Wong, blessing the academic year ahead through holy prayers and melodious hymns. The entrance hymn “All are welcome” in particular, called for students to “build a house” where love can reside and hearts learn to forgive. Following this, Msgr Vaz blessed the college pins that are traditionally pinned onto the collars of each JC1 student by a JC2 student. This symbolic act officially marked them as members of the CJC community, as they set out to live by the values the flame symbolises. The expectant JC1s received their pins with eagerness, grateful for being welcomed with such a touching gesture.
the COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on all aspects of life, including the way CJC conducted sporting events. However, as restrictions were lifted and life began returning to normal, CJC finally had the opportunity to bring back the much beloved Cross Country on 10 March 2023 which was held at Pasir Ris Park.
The day started off on an energetic note, with the Sport Leaders (SLs) leading their house cheers enthusiastically. These cheers were followed by a speech from our Principal, Mrs Phyllis Lim, who first credited the SLs and Physical Education teachers for their hard work in planning the event. She then thanked God for blessing the college with good weather for us to have this event after three years of it being disrupted. As Mrs Lim concluded her speech, she encouraged all CJCians to take part in the cross country run together, as One Flame, One Family.
After the heartening speech, the competitive runners took their positions eagerly, with quiet determination etched on their faces as
they were all aiming to secure a coveted spot on the podium. Shortly after, the rest of the college started their run as well, with Albert starting off first, followed by Patrick, Joseph, then Michael. Throughout the run, CJCians urged each other on, and reveled in the beauty of the natural surroundings. Moreover, CJC also had the opportunity to collaborate with our beneficiary—the Singapore Association Of The Visually Handicapped (SAVH) for this event. Our well-trained guide runners ran with the visually handicapped participants from SAVH—a symbolic gesture which celebrated the importance of inclusivity and compassion.
Another highlight of the event was the exciting dance mashups organised by the sports leaders who danced to upbeat songs such as “Gangnam Style”, “Moves like Jagger”, and “Cake By The Ocean.” During the prize-giving segment, loud cheers erupted from the audience as CJCians uplifted one another for their accomplishments. The prize-giving ceremony ended with the reveal of the winning house for cross country— Patrick House!
Rockafella XVII: Reborn Performers was held on 28 April this year, commemorating yet another year of CJCians’ perseverance in the unrelenting journey to the ‘A’ Levels. Held annually on the last day of CJC’s Mental Wellness Week, Rockafella is a rock concert put together by our very own talents—students and teachers alike. This year’s Rockafella saw a Performing Arts Centre (PAC) auditorium full of spirited screaming, as always, as we cheered for the performers.
The concert opened with a solo performance by Ily Nuha Binte Hishamudin (2T02), who sang two songs as the last few audience members streamed in. As soon as everyone was seated in the PAC, the emcees appeared on stage to officially get the show rolling. The emcees masterfully engaged the audience in interactive activities, such as asking questions
and leading everyone in cheers. Not long after, the performances by the competing bands began. To make the evening even more exciting, a group of dancers showcased their impressive moves and there was also a special performance by CJC alumni. One of the highlights of the concert was the teachers’ band performance. Ms Mackenzie Schoon showcased her powerful vocals on a rendition of the classic rock anthem “Zombie” by The Cranberries. The night ended with a beautiful encore from the winning student band, My Chemical Bromance, joined by solo singer Nuha.
Rockafella XVII: Reborn Performers lasted well over its scheduled duration, but the deafening cheers in the PAC proved that it was the most show-stopping way to end Mental Wellness Week 2023.
on 5 May 2023, Catholic Junior College (CJC) celebrated its 48th College Day to recognise the achievements and dedication of its students and staff. This year, the ceremony began with a rousing speech by the Student Council President, Aqil Aufa (2T18), who reminded the audience that no mountain is too big to scale as long as they try their best.
With this, our Principal, Mrs Phyllis Lim took the podium and addressed the college, sharing about the various events that took place the past two years, all of which showed the College’s can-do spirit and the ways in which our students have exemplified our College’s Mission — Thinkers with a Mission and Leaders with a Heart. Moreover, she also congratulated
the Sports and Performing Arts CCAs for their outstanding performances and acknowledged their efforts to prepare for the National School Games (NSG) and the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Arts Presentation respectively. In the wise words of Mrs Lim, “it takes a village to raise a child”. For supporting the college and its students throughout their CJC journey, she expressed immense gratitude to the staff, Parent Support Group (PSG), and donors.
The Guest Of Honour was Mr Freddie Yeo, from the class of 1987, who is currently the Chief Operating Officer of Infinite Studios. He shared about the important lessons he learnt from his time in CJC, and the values which he holds dear to him: passion, attitude, humility, respect, By
integrity, and empathy. He also spoke about how the Catholic faith has remained a guiding light for him even until today. Next, our College Chaplain, Father Justin took over the prayer service, reminding us that in God’s love and grace, we can get through any challenges as a college. The sermon was about salt and light, and he expounded more on the “light” aspect of it; how light can be found in any situation as long as one takes the initiative to look for it, and how it can guide our journey.
This was an apt introduction for the next segment: the presentation of scholarships, prizes and awards to students and staff members. The college came together to commend all award winners for their diligence and to celebrate
their achievements. Notably, the recipient of the prestigious Dr Ee Peng Liang Memorial Award was Olivia Tan (2T20, Class of 2022), who was recognised for her academic achievements and contributions to the college as well as the larger community.
The celebration came to a close with the singing of the college anthem, which serves as a reminder of the values that the college upholds, namely, to live in truth and love. Overall, the 48th College Day celebration was a testament to the college’s commitment to nurturing future leaders who will make a positive impact on society.
he English Language and Linguistics symposium, held at Catholic Junior College on 12th May 2023, was jointly organised by Catholic Junior College and National Junior College. As indicated by the name of the symposium (“Can meh? Are we really okay with Singlish?”) the focus of the symposium was on Singlish. The invited speakers—Dr Tay May Yin, Assistant Professor Luke Lu, and Assistant Professor Geraldine Quek—captivated the attention of the hundreds of participants in attendance which comprised students from junior colleges offering English Language and Linguistics (ELL) as an A-level subject, and selected secondary schools. The speakers delved into the multifaceted role of Singlish in our education system, its impact on shaping culture, and its prevalence in our daily lives.
After the enlightening presentations, the students engaged in a stimulating question
and answer session where they posed thoughtprovoking questions about the impact of English in many areas of Singapore life. Subsequently, prizes were awarded to the teams that excelled in the poster design competition. Students had been tasked to create posters to either promote code-switching or discourage the excessive use of Singlish. The winning teams hailed from Hai Sing Catholic School, School of Science and Technology and Commonwealth Secondary School.
Through the symposium, the students learnt more about how English and Singlish play separate but vital roles in our society not only as a language to connect Singaporeans across racial and class barriers, but also as a language to connect Singapore to the world. It deepened their appreciation for English Language and Linguistics which fosters conversations about how language can shape society and human behaviour.
on 26 May 2023, CJC’s first Sports and Aesthetics Carnival involving both the JC1 and JC2 cohorts was finally held again after the past few years of COVID-19 restrictions. Unfortunately, the day began with rainy weather, and the Sports Leaders from each house hastened to put the wet weather plan into action.
The event began with our principal, Mrs Phyllis Lim, acknowledging the extensive efforts of the House Captains and the planning committee, and sharing her excitement for the long-awaited event. She also affirmed the House Committee and Sports Leaders for being able to quickly adapt to the unfortunate weather situation and allowing the event to carry on smoothly. To kick off the occasion, the team captains of each group gathered in the auditorium to take the Athletes’ Oath, and the Sports Leaders and student volunteers performed their mass dance to upbeat and catchy music, while the rest of the school watched from their classrooms through a Zoom meeting.
The students were then split up and assigned to their designated locations to carry out the indoor activities according to the wet weather plan. Despite the change in plans, the students were able to enjoy the game show and participate in a wide variety of indoor sports activities facilitated by the Sports Leaders, to rack up points for their houses. Thankfully, the skies eventually cleared and the carnival
was able to continue as planned. In a flurry of excitement, the students hurried down to gather at the grandstand, where Mrs Lim officially announced the clear weather and the execution of the original plan for the event. After splitting up into their allocated teams, the students began the competitive inter-house games, including netball, football, frisbee, escape room, and many more other exciting activities. Although not all the students were able to participate as originally planned, they were able to show their utmost support for their houses by enthusiastically cheering their friends on during the games. The Aesthetics portion of the event was a mascot design competition, where students could create and submit their designs for our college mascot, and the house with the best submissions would win house points.
Towards the end of the lively event, the Sports Leaders and student volunteers gathered to perform the mass dance once more, live for the school to enjoy. The winning teams of each sport and activity were then announced and presented with medals, as the students waited nervously and excitedly, in anticipation of the overall winning house of the event. Followed by shrieks of excitement and roaring cheers of congratulations, it was announced that Patrick House emerged the winner of this year’s Sports and Aesthetics Carnival. The event ended on a high note, with each house loudly reciting their house cheers with great exhilaration.
on 10 July 2023 , Catholic Junior College celebrated the achievements of their outgoing and incoming student leaders during its annual Student Leaders Appreciation and Installation Ceremony. As the students of CJC took their seats in the auditorium, the ceremony began with the singing of an opening hymn, “City Of God”, while the Executive Committee (EXCO) of the 48th Student Council walked in bearing the school and house flags.
Our Principal, Mrs Phyllis Lim, began her speech spiritedly, affirming the efforts contributed by the JC2 student leaders to improve the school
environment. Mrs Lim applauded the leaders for organising events such as the annual Rockafella, a rock band competition aimed to showcase the musicality of our students and also provides students with a respite from the rigours of college life. After Mrs Lim ended her speech, the J2 leaders were presented with a meaningful token of appreciation for their efforts—a pen with their year of service engraved on it.
The Guest of Honour was Lieutenant Colonel Joshua Goh (Class of 2005). As Lieutenant Colonel Goh reminisced his schooling days in CJC, the students were surprised that his driving
force was his Catholic faith. He also shared that it is “not what you can get, but what you can give’—an apt axiom for servant leadership as one should be genuine in wanting to contribute for the betterment of lives, rather than contribute just for one’s personal benefit. This idea was echoed by Father Justin Yip who fervently stated that ‘being responsible is not simply having a burden to fulfil, but it is something one should be willing to take, out of love to serve’.
As the speeches concluded, the presentation of certificates commenced. Each awardee beamed exuberantly as they took their place on the stage holding their certificate while their
peers cheered for them. The official handover was symbolised by the outgoing batch of student leaders using the flame on their candles, to light the candles of the incoming batch—an action that was simple yet meaningful.
As the ceremony came to a close, the president of the 48th Student Council, Aqil Aufa Bin Muhammad president, James Tan Zi Long (1T28), spoke to the students, assuring them that they will continue to serve the school to the best of their abilities. James Tan, then emphasised that leadership should not be motivated by formal titles; one can be a leader as long as one has the heart to serve.
on 21 July, our Literature students came together to share creative works and performances based on their A-Level Literature texts. The theme of this year’s Litera was “Re(fracture)” which allowed students to explore philosophical ideas related to the fragmentation of identity and the fracturing of perspectives. The audience was enraptured by the creativity on display: Some of the creative
works put up by the students included a retelling of “The Great Gatsby” set in the criminal underworld of 1920s New York as well as a presentation on the challenges of translating Shakespeare’s language into Mandarin. Established local poet, Cyril Wong, also graced the event and shared his insights on the topic of subjectivity.
this year’s Alumni Sports Fiesta brought together alumni from different generations and walks of life. There were six different sports on offer this year including, for the first time, volleyball. Our current students from our sports co-curricular activities also participated in the event. It was indeed heartening to witness students—both past and present—engaging in hearty conversations, reminiscing about their time in Catholic Junior College and bonding over their shared love for sports.
This year’s National Day celebrations began with an observance ceremony led by Parade Commander, Bond Lim, from 2T15. The procession embodied the theme of this year’s National Day, “Onward As One”—a rallying call to Singaporeans to move onward and shape our shared future as one united people. An engaging concert was also organised to commemorate the event. The different houses competed in a Kahoot quiz which tested their knowledge of Singapore. Next, a singing contest was held where the
concert singers showed their enthusiasm and love for our nation. The celebration continued with an energetic dance performance by our own dance CCA while the audience cheered them on. To end the event, the school sang this year’s National Day Song, “Shine Your Light”, in unison. The National Day celebration in our school not only celebrated Singapore’s independence, but also underscored the importance of community, togetherness, and a shared sense of identity among the students.
the college resumed its two-day, onenight JC2 Retreat this year—the first since the pandemic struck. From 29 to 30 September, about 60 JC2 participants— comprising Catholic and non-Catholic students—experienced a time of prayer and fellowship, reconnecting with God after a hectic year.
The highlight of the Retreat was, as always, the labyrinth walk—a walking meditation in a beautiful setting that was lovingly constructed by CJC teachers, alumni, and even JC1 students who stepped up to help! Reflection stations were also set up in the library for retreatants to watch a short film and engage with handson activities such as origami, letter writing and prayer through poems and short stories.
on 31 August, Catholic Junior College (CJC) held its annual Teachers’ Day event to honour the efforts and contributions of the teachers in CJC.
The day began with the entire school gathering at the Grandstand where the Principal, Mrs Phyllis Lim, addressed the school. In her speech, she stressed the importance of teachers and acknowledged the hard work they put in. Her opening address kickstarted the main celebrations of the day consisting of 2 student performances: a cover of the song “Open Arms” and a dance segment to the song “Antifragile” which both elicited cheers and applause from students and teachers alike.
The school then retreated to their respective classrooms where every class participated in a Kahoot quiz about the various teachers in CJ. This served as a way for students to get to know the different teachers in CJ even if they had not met them before. Additionally, students and teachers watched a snippet of a Ministry of Education Instagram reel that featured two of the school’s teachers, Mr Austin Ong and Ms Tan Wei Jun. To end the day, students showed their appreciation for their teachers in their own unique ways through video montages, gifts, and letters. These gestures of gratitude conveyed that, though hardly acknowledged on a regular basis, the acts of service that the tutors carry out have made an impact on the lives of the students in CJC.
graduation Day has always been a bittersweet event for the graduating JC2 seniors. The event marks the end of their journey here in CJC, and the start of a new, exciting one. It is inevitable that the students would develop a strong attachment to the school and their peers during their time here and therefore, saying goodbye is always difficult.
The day began with a final student development lesson held in the classroom where the students received thoughtful gifts from the Parent Support Group and also had meaningful conversations with their home tutors. In the next segment of the event which was held in the Auditorium, a montage featuring heartfelt messages from the JC2 tutors was flashed on the screen. Mrs Phyllis Lim, the Principal, then shared about the achievements of the Class of 2023 and emphasised the importance of servant leadership. The invited guest of honour
for the event, Mr Jeff Lim (Class of 2008), is the co-founder of Bluenest—a technologybased real estate company. He emphasised the importance of adaptability and intellectual curiosity—traits which will stand any CJCian in good stead in a volatile and complex world. The celebrations continued in the canteen where students were treated to a sumptuous buffet and were also given free rein to use the photobooths prepared for them. One of the highlights of the event, as always, is the CJ Pageant. Chloe See (2T20) and Shashwath (2T19), both charismatic and well-liked by their peers, walked away with the titles of Ms and Mr CJ.
The event closed with a speech by the VicePrincipal, Mr Tan, who left some poignant parting words for the Class of 2023: “light is to darkness what love is to fear.”

on 24 November 2023, CJC’s annual JC1 End-of-Year Thanksgiving Ceremony took place. Beginning with a Student Development (SD) lesson, students participated in a heartwarming session where they expressed gratitude towards their peers. The lesson ended with them writing a letter to themselves where they reflected on the year thus far, and also penned down their hopes for 2024.
During the main ceremony in the Performing Arts Centre, Mrs Phyllis Lim, the Principal, gave a summary of the year’s main highlights such as the College’s participation in various competitions. She announced exciting new additions to the College like the CJ Recreation Hub where students can socialise with their peers and unwind from their busy schedules.
As this was Mrs Lim’s final address to the College, she also reminisced about her time as
the Principal of Catholic Junior College which she will always hold dear to her heart.
After which, the inaugural Caritate Award was given to deserving J1 students who have contributed actively to bettering the lives of their peers. Students then watched a montage of their JC1 journey. The montage served as a reminder of shared experiences, showcasing a journey of achievements and growth, and evoking nostalgia in students. Finally, there was a special segment to show appreciation to Mrs Phyllis Lim, the outgoing Principal, who has served in Catholic Junior College for seven years. A scrapbook and finger-painted flame from the alumni and school were presented to her as farewell gifts. The JC1 cohort left the Performing Arts Centre with gratitude and joy in their hearts.
on 8 May, the JC2 students had the privilege of attending a dialogue session with Dr. Janil Puthucheary—Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Communications and Information and the Ministry of Health and the Government Whip. Dr Puthucheary had a robust discussion with the students about the government’s role in promoting mental wellness amongst Singaporeans. One of the issues raised is that mental health is much more than just
the absence of mental illness—it is also about the presence of positive qualities that promote overall well-being and flourishing. Many have highlighted that it is so important for leaders to pay greater attention to mental wellness and that it is worth the investment of time. It was indeed enlightening for the students to hear directly from a minister who has a direct hand in implementing policies that affect the quality of life enjoyed by Singaporeans.
on 25 July, the JC1 students participated in a dialogue session with Ambassador
A Selverajah—a veteran diplomat with forty years of experience working in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and who has served previous ambassadorial appointments in countries such as Belgium, Germany, Phillipines, Denmark and Turkey. Ambassador Selverajah shared about the complexities behind maintaining
Singapore’s diplomatic ties with other countries. Different JC1 students posed astute and thought-provoking questions about navigating geopolitical challenges—a delicate balancing act that involves multiple considerations. The students were made to think about whether a “friend to all, enemy to none” approach is the most feasible approach to adopt where diplomacy is concerned.
Finding our Passion, Developing our Talents
Over the past year, our badminton journey has been truly remarkable. We have grown into a strong, cohesive team with trust and camaraderie as our foundation. Throughout the course of this eventful year, we have become more effective players who exemplify teamwork and dedication.
During CCA or outside training sessions, we care for each other like family. Our burning passion for improvement gives us the drive to look ahead and seek progress. At the same time, we engage in friendly competition to motivate one another to excel in the sport.
This year, our students participated in the National School Games ‘A’ Division and displayed excellent sportsmanship on the court. Although the results could have been better, we were still proud of ourselves for giving our best. The competition taught us to work together as a team and to continue striving for excellence in the midst of setbacks.

In addition to the competitive matches, a special and emotional moment during the season was the farewell match organised for the JC2 students. The farewell match was unique as it featured a special appearance by the teachers’ team, who played against the JC2 students. This friendly yet competitive match was a heartwarming way to bid farewell to the graduating students. The match symbolised the end of the JC2 students’ time in the school’s basketball CCA. It allowed them to play alongside their teachers and mentors one last time, reinforcing the bonds and memories they had created during their CCA journey.
Overall, we have had a meaningful and memorable year.
Through our strenuous land and water training sessions, we learnt the importance of working together as a team. We often encouraged one another to persevere through the toughest of circumstances. We have since emerged stronger physically and mentally. This truly embodies our motto “Mentis Opprimo Materia” (Latin for “Mind over Matter”).
As we participated in the Singapore Junior Canoeing Championship followed by the Inter-School ‘A’ Division Championship 2023 against strong competitors, we maintained our spirit and determination to do our best, achieving and even exceeding our personal targets. The team fought hard and displayed strong sportsmanship throughout the competition which led to new friendships that were forged between competitors. The K4 Canoeing

Throughout the two years in CJC, the canoeing team displayed resilience and perseverance. This journey has been physically and mentally draining; nevertheless, it has been worthwhile. We will continue to live out our motto and to always strive for excellence.

Tfor the Choir, which presented two major performances: the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Arts Presentation as well as the CJ Celebrates Concert. This has allowed us to put the fruits of our hard work and dedication throughout the year on display.
On 25 April 2023, the Choir clinched a Distinction at the 2023 Singapore Youth Festival (Arts Presentation), maintaining our consistent track record of Distinctions, demonstrating the fruits of our labour.
Unity is of paramount importance to any choir. Throughout the various challenges we have overcome, we have worked together and become closer as a team, joining our voices in harmony to create a new sound that is wholly ours. With the addition of the new voices of the JC1 members, our CCA has reached new heights, explored new sounds and created new melodies.
We are now working hard to improve our skills and continue honing our craft. We look to 2024 with excitement, looking forward to the new harmonies we will create together.
2023 was a year of growth for our CCA. Time and time again our grit and determination was tested especially during the competition season, which was in full force this year due to the lifting of COVID restrictions. In spite of the challenges, we remained strong and extremely bonded with our teammates, thereby fully embracing CJXC’s motto ‘strength in the mind’.
This year was special as we had not only one but two
National School Games. On 27 April 2023 and 28 April 2023, Dilan Haridas (2T03) and Daniel Tang Jie Erne (1T18) made our school proud and managed to
Race Walk and the 1500m respectively. Moreover, our CCA also represented CJC in other competitions such as the Wings Cross Country Championships and the SA National Track and Field Championships, where Nicodemus Lai Kye Jun (2T05) clinched the bronze medal for the 1500m race. Indeed, our competition team members have shown resilience throughout the entire year and have inspired us to continue striving for excellence!
With 2024 approaching, we hope to reach greater heights together as a CCA and to continue to honour the tenacity and strength of our JC2 seniors, as well as maintain and strengthen the bonds within our CCA by creating memories that will last as long as the distances we run!

2023 was a whirlwind of a year as we geared up for the Singapore Youth Festival 2023 Arts
Presentation and it was also one which saw the tremendous growth our club achieved as a whole. We started the year with the J2s hitting the ground running with the Open House performance. Thereafter, it was all hands on deck with the intensive training sessions, during which we worked hard to perfect our performance item, ‘Ado-Lessons’, which is a fusion obtained was especially meaningful because it was a combined effort of the entire J2 crew as well as some dancers from our J1 team. Truly, we learnt that the CJDC spirit is unbeatable when we come together as one. Throughout the process, we saw our schoolmates, teachers and school leaders rally around us in support. Indeed, the most impactful lesson we took away was that with our Hearts Ablaze, we would always be One Flame, One Family.

It was a highly invigorating process with the J1s determined to make their debut a most engaging one. There was no better moment than the one when the audience cheered at the end of our successfully executed performance. We continued our engagement with elderly members of our community through our Local Service Learning Project Travelling Back in Time, which saw us making meaningful connections with the seniors at NTUC Health Day Care Centre for Seniors (Toa Payoh) through the use of playback theatre techniques to present stories shared by them as multilingual sketch performances. We used this experience as a creative springboard for our performance in a community outreach event RE:ACT in November.

Editorial Club has had an enriching year as student journalists, documenting experiences and events
We embraced opportunities to curate the stories of the CJ community.
This year, Editorial Club continued our good work on the college newsletter ‘Flame’ and produced 2 issues that were released online for staff and students. Our members conceptualised, conducted interviews with their peers, staff, alumni and college partners to produce the July issue entitled ‘Light Up Your Path’ highlighting stories on college events such as the JC1 Orientation, Cross Country and Rockafella and the Sports and Aesthetics Carnival. Flame Issue 2 covered our graduating classes and celebrated our teachers and their contributions.
Our JC1 student journalists as well as 7 JC2 members participated in an inaugural local service learning project (LSLP) initiated by our CCA in the form of a collaboration with the National Library Board (NLB). The participants were tasked to write blog entries for NLB’s weblog.
Selected students were assigned to craft social media posts for NLB’s Instagram account. Our members found the experience enriching as it provided them with a clearer understanding of the NLB’s reading collections, programmes and initiatives.
Our student journalists also attended a workshop conducted by Channel News Asia (CNA) journalist and editor, Ms Neo Chai Chin. She shared precious insights
on memorable experiences in her line of duty. Ms Neo shared useful tips on conducting interviews and using quotes effectively in articles. The sharing was enlightening as it provided our members with a platform to discuss the realities and expectations of the media industry.

This year, we worked hard to expand our recruitment efforts and have doubled our membership, with 21 new members joining the fencing family.
Our junior fencers supported and cheered for their seniors during the National School Games ‘A’ Division competition this year. Many of them took the opportunity to learn more about the sport and observed how top fencers prepare themselves for their matches.
2Our fencer, Raphael Tan Jun Kang (2T28), did CJC proud by clinching the 3rd individual placing in the National School Games ‘A’ Division Men’s Foil division. He was also awarded the Singapore Olympic Foundation-Peter Lim Scholarship 2023.
023 brought much excitement to the CCA as the school slowly resumed normal events and activities after the pandemic. We moved as a CCA towards achieving greater heights as we encouraged each other to continue learning soft and hard skills.
Many of us challenged ourselves as we embarked on the different events to hone our photography and videography skills for college-wide events like Open House, Orientation, Cross Country and Rockafella. We produced various videos which we were proud to showcase to the school and it was a worthwhile experience. In addition, we worked with teachers and students to provide technical support at ceremonies and events. Carrying out our duties every day for morning assembly was an important feature of our work as we learnt how to manage the audio and projection systems at different venues!
We participated in various competitions this year to display our work such as the MOE “Our School, Our Story” Photography and Videography Competition and the “Appreciating NSmen Video Competition” organised by SAFRA. Our members fought hard and learnt valuable experiences from these competitions.
“Kaleidoscope” which involves showcasing the work of our talented FSV members. This was an ambitious project that we are immensely proud of. We look forward to future generations of CJCians contributing their photos to this project.
First Aid Club. As the college transitioned back to the pre-pandemic days and the number of college events increased, the First Aid Club had more opportunities to serve the College.
The Standard First Aid (SFA) course allowed our members to acquire basic skills needed to serve the college in events such as Cross Country and the J1 Orientation. Our annual Blood Donation Drive was special this year as we extended our invitations to parents to join the college in donating blood and we are truly grateful to those who have volunteered their time as the CCA saw an improvement in the numbers of successful donors. In-person training sessions were focused on forging deep friendships between the members and instilling discipline. The senior members of our teams served as mentors, guiding our juniors in mastering the game. Our growth as a team was fueled by determination and a never-say-die attitude.

enesis is a second CCA that aims to provide Catholic and Christian students with a supportive community which they can turn to for spiritual and emotional support. Although Genesis is centered on the Catholic religion, it is an open community that welcomes all students regardless of their religion.
To nourish our members spiritually, Genesis organises monthly cell group sessions which features Praise and Worship; spiritual
and group sharing, as well as intercessory prayer. By praying together for each other, we are constantly reminded that we are not alone in our struggles.
Genesis also held a retreat for its members this year. The retreat aimed to induct the new J1s into the Genesis community. It also provided an opportunity for the J1s and J2s to further interact with one another and build a greater sense of community within the CCA. The retreat consisted of two

To enrich the spirituality of not only our members but the college as well, Genesis also organises school events every semester known as the Emmaus session in conjunction

Genesis also provides musical accompaniment for Friday afternoon masses in school and we also participate in events such as the Lenten Project as well as the “Fully Alive” matriculation week session to introduce the Catholic ethos of the College to the new JC1 students. In addition, as part of our lenten outreach efforts, we also worked closely together with Canossaville Children & Community services to launch a food drive in CJC to provide care packs for vulnerable families celebrating Hari Raya.
Genesis will continue to look forward to forming a strong nexus with the Religious Education Team as well as the Catholic Activities Wing of the Student Council to strengthen the Catholic ethos in CJC.
The past year was one of novel experiences and unprecedented growth, especially for the guitarists who were new to the instrument. We had to focus on learning new songs while also ensuring that we were on top of our school work as well.
To strengthen our sense of belonging to the CCA, we designed a CCA t-shirt that members could wear during training hours, and at showcases such as Open House 2023.
Over time, our members have grown and matured, investing more time and effort into practising and contributing to the CCA. As we neared the day of the Singapore Youth Festival Arts Presentation (Western Instrumental Ensemble), we increased training sessions to 3 times a week to keep up with the rigour Distinction at the SYF on 6 April 2023.
This is the fruit of the hard work of many people: our teachers; our coach, Mr Kevin Ow; and, most of all, the Ensemble for never giving up. Several of our guitarists have also demonstrated their passion for music by performing at the Rockafella concert organised by the school in April, showcasing how adept they are at both the guitar and other instruments.
Each batch of guitarists is unique and different, with juniors will continue to maintain the high standards of the Ensemble while remaining themselves, and forge for themselves wonderful memories of the CJC Guitar Ensemble and college life.

Iwe participated in two major performances—the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Arts Presentation and our College’s CJ Celebrates concert. These opportunities have allowed us to display the fruits of our hard work and dedication throughout the year.
On 3 April 2023, the ensemble clinched a Distinction at the 2023 SYF Arts Presentation. This achievement is our fourth consecutive SYF Distinction award. In addition, we received the Silver Award at the Nanyang International Music Competition.
As an ensemble, we have learnt the value of unity. We worked together and witnessed how we made progress as a team, not leaving anyone behind. As described in the college theme—Hearts Ablaze: One Flame, One Family—we slowly became one big family through collaborating with each other. With the additional presence of JC1 members, our CCA has become even more diverse, allowing for more creative possibilities.
We are now working hard to improve our skills and prepare even more exciting pieces for next year. We look forward to showcasing the results of our effort and commitment in 2024.
The past year has been a highly unpredictable and volatile one. Despite the challenges being thrown at us constantly, we conscientiously overcame them all and gave back to both local and international communities.
We began our term with a merchandise sale for the Society of the Physically Disabled (SPD) where we sold keychains in college at $2 per piece and managed to raise $222. In the second semester, we planned and executed a virtual Interact Club Overseas Service Learning Project in Cambodia which aimed to equip a select group of underprivileged Cambodian children
and executed in 2023 was Kindness Blooms, an annual rose sale event on Valentine’s Day, held in our college, to raise funds for St Luke’s Eldercare. We sold handwrapped roses at $3.50 each and raised a total of $932.
Following that, we also engaged in project heART in collaboration with ACS(I) and ICC during our March holidays to cultivate artistic creativity and imagination in young children. We held 2 sessions, each at a different student care centre, and taught the children how to make simple handicrafts to deepen their interest in the arts. To promote literacy, we also conducted a book donation drive in March this year. We donated 413
Clubs across Singapore. We ended our term with a successful sports carnival for the elderly titled “Fit Fest”. The project involved other students form the College who took on the role of managing and interacting with the elderly who attended the sports carnival.
While continuing our CIP with St Luke’s Eldercare from last year, our club also branched out to four other
Sick, Care Corner, Bishan Home for the Intellectually Disabled, and Beyond Social Services. Our club received two awards, namely the Interact District Award (Merit Award) in 2023 for our Kindness Blooms project, and the virtual Interact Club Overseas Service Learning Project (Cambodia).
With safe management measures no longer hindering our capabilities, the CCA is looking forward to seizing more opportunities to give back to different communities both locally and internationally.

Judo Club in CJC has been producing notable judokas for more than 30 years. Our primary goal as a club that accepts new members with no prior experience is to foster a love of Judo as a martial art form. Our Judokas gradually increased their stamina, mental fortitude, and demonstrated their willingness to push themselves to the limit through the demanding and intensive training sessions skilfully designed by our trainers. Their performances at the National School Games (NSG) ‘A’ Division Judo Championships once again demonstrated their mental strength. Our Judokas did well this year, achieving one Silver and two Bronze medals, with our Boys’ team clinching the Overall Third place in the championships as well. Our Judokas have developed solid friendships, built a tremendous sense of teamwork, and emerged as champions in many ways during the entire year.
023 has been an eventful and enriching year for us! We participated in the National School Games (NSG) ‘A’ Division Championship. What a delight! We had friendly matches with other schools such as NJC, MI and YIJC. Training began in earnest in January and gained intensity in the two months leading to the Championship.

Through the thrice-weekly training sessions, we have gained more knowledge of game techniques and tactics; in addition we have grown in unity and clarity of purpose. Although we were disappointed that we did not qualify for the Quarter Finals, we were not formidable opponents.
In the year ahead, we will continue this culture of care and sportsmanship that we have built. In true CJC Netball fashion, we will keep up this indomitable spirit, and continue to strive for excellence in Netball and in our academic pursuits, while looking out for one another. his year continued to be an exciting year for the Oratorical Society as we moved fully into inperson training sessions and competitions.
Both online and in-person, the OS Exco ran invigorating debate and MUN training sessions for the rest of the OS members, and organised numerous activities and
CJMUN on 13 & 14 March 2023. This year, CJMUN was run as an interhouse competition and was warmly welcomed by the wider college body, with more than 50 students actively participating as delegates of various councils.
As always, our alumni members continued to play an important role in nurturing and motivating our newer members, and with their relentless support, we participated in numerous competitions.
This year, our CCA took part in a plethora of prestigious competitions such as the NUSPA Debate Series, Infernus Cup, 9th Oldham Cup 2023, Dunman High Debate Open, MOE-ACJC Intercollegiate Debating Championship 2023, Singapore Model United Nations, Mid Year Debate Invitationals as well as Temasek Polytechnic Charity Championships. These competitions gave us the exposure which is critical in developing ourselves as

his year, the Shooting CCA has made many remarkable achievements in competitions throughout the year.

On 21 February 2023, our Air Pistol Men’s Team, consisting of Chia Rey (2T16), Goh Teng Lok Audric (2T29) and Xiang Yuan (2T07), did the college proud by achieving 3rd Place in the NUS Invitational Shoot Competitions, with one of our members, Chia Rey, emerging 1st in the Air Pistol Men’s Individual Category. On 2 March 2023, the team went on to compete at the NTU Invitational Shoot and achieved yet another exceptional team placing of 2nd in the South Zone Category.
At the NSG ‘A’ Divisions competitions, our CCA achieved our members: Chia Rey (2T16), Goh Teng Lok Audric (2T29), Leia Leong (2T29), Goh Meng En (2T07) and Cassie Jane Lee (2T01) entering the Finals. On 14 April 2023, Audric achieved 5th placing in Air Pistol Men’s Individual Category and the Air Pistol Team clinched overall 4th in the Team Category.

This year has been a transitional period for STE2M Club as it evolved from its predecessor Environmental Science Club (ESS). The vision of STE2M Club is to champion sustainable living through STEM solutions. With this new focus, STE2M Club acquired two 3D printers and a laser cutter to provide opportunities for students to do prototyping in their STEM projects after acquiring these skills through various workshops.
We started this year with a learning journey to RGENTU Sustainable Textile Research Centre (SusTex) where the JC2 students learnt about the innovation in textile recycling technology (e.g. environmental chemistry and materials) to address the global issue of textile waste.
The CCA teachers, Mr Jeffrey Toh, Mr Chua Chee Siang and Dr Lim Wei Ying also conducted the 3D Printing, Workshops respectively to JC1 students this year. Notably, students applied the design thinking framework and proposed STEM solutions to identify issues in the college for the CJC Design Thinking Competition. Lastly, the students also attended the NUS Arduino workshop in October.
2023 has been an exciting year for Strategy Games. With the removal of Covid-19 regulations, our CCA was able to organise the 8th CJC Inter-College Chinese-Chess Competition in pandemic began. It motivated our members to train harder and reignited our competitive spirit. Going against tough and experienced players from
Institution and National Junior College, our member, Phan Bach Viet from 2T08, managed to clinch Second Place in the Individual Category, bringing honour and glory to our college.
Encouraged by our successful Inter-college C-Chess Competition, our CCA also conducted the Inter-House International-Chess Competition during the Annual Sports and Aesthetic Carnival in May, allowing CCA members and non-members to hone their skills and learn from one another in a friendly competition. Our Captains also kickstarted many new and creative ways to teach and enjoy their respective games such as conducting short sessions to analyse chess moves and sharing interesting chess videos.
As we prepare to make our next opening move on the chessboard of life, we are eagerly anticipating an exhilarating journey in the upcoming year, for

023 has been a great year for CJC Swimming. The National School Games (NSG) were held later than usual this year and this gave our team even more time to train for the competition. With three additional weeks of training sessions, we persevered and trained hard. Through these challenges, we bonded as a team, growing close to each other. Though we may not have won the NSG, the CJ Swimming team is proud of our results. Most of our swimmers were competing for

2023 has undoubtedly been an unforgettable and thrilling year for CJC Symphonic Band (CJCSB). On the 5th of May, the band performed the set piece “Kinderszenen” and the choice piece “Alvamar Overture’’ for the Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) 2023. With the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions, we were able to include all members of our band. After Accomplishment. On the 31st of May, CJCSB performed the same two pieces for the Annual CJ Celebrates concert where we received tremendous applause for our performance.
Indeed, it is with the unrelenting support of our teachers, Ms Heng Yuqing Wendy, Mr Kam Wei Loon, Mrs LeongChew Tyng Huey and Mdm Ding Man—along with our conductors and tutors Mr Tan Thiam Hee, Mr Lee Wen Xiang and Mr Sim Choo Huat—that our achievements were made possible. Our JC2 members have also mentored our JC1s with care and dedication. We wish them the very best in their future endeavours, and will strive to maintain and uphold the legacy of the CJC Symphonic Band.

The Bowling team has grown in various aspects. Despite many of our members joining with little to no experience, their sheer determination and commitment to learn the skills within a short span of months to represent the College is truly commendable. The team’s passion for surpassing our expectations to achieve 5th overall placing for the Boys’ team and 7th overall for the Girls’ team. Training and working hard as a team also developed camaraderie and unity in a short span of time, shaping the Bowling team into a family. The students look forward to the coming year, to continue to hone their skills and seize the next opportunity to improve on their achievements in 2024.
In 2023, our teams had the opportunity to participate in the National School Games ‘A’ Division, which was an exciting and enriching experience. As a CCA, we aim to bring glory to CJC by excelling in competitions. We also aim to organise more opportunities for bonding such as beach clean-ups and an intra-CCA competition.
Having attained second position in last year’s Inter-JC Ultimate Competition, the CJ Ultimate team aspired to maintain a podium position this year. Under the guidance of the teachers-in-charge and coach, we continued to be consistent in honing our physical and mental strength, persevered through setbacks and grew as a strong and tightly knitted team.
In the weeks leading up to the 2023 Inter-JC Ultimate Competition on 3 and 4 June 2023, the fortitude of the CJ Ultimate team shone through as we balanced the commitments of examinations and intensive competition training. Undaunted by strong competitors and unfavourable weather conditions, we emerged victorious in all but one match, achieving second place in the competition for the second consecutive year!
After the JC2 students handed over the reins, the JC1 students stepped up to represent the CCA. On 29 July 2023, selected JC1 students pitted ourselves against experienced teams of alumni players in the CJ Alumni Fiesta. We also made a difference to the community, and planned and executed our inaugural Local Service Learning Project. On 21 November 2023, we hosted children from the Infant Jesus Homes and Children’s Centres. We had a meaningful session teaching them the skills and spirit behind the sport of Ultimate.
We had an exciting season as we began training in the new sheltered courts, and had the opportunity to sharpen our skills.
Both competitive and non-competitive teams had more meaningful training sessions as we were less affected by the weather. For the ‘A’ Division team, rigorous training and friendly matches resumed in full swing as we worked tirelessly to prepare ourselves with guidance from the coaches.
The ‘A’ Division competitions took on a new format this year with only two groups in the preliminary round and had to face more seeded and experienced teams at the group stage. Throughout the games, we showed great resolve and tenacity against all opponents.
We had the privilege to experience competition at a high level, and persevered against stronger opponents,
best. Through this journey, as individuals we learnt the we cherished the moments and opportunity to work collectively, and forged strong bonds together.
