DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Senior center Brooke Johnson scored a career-high 26 points but it wasn’t enough to push Western Carolina past Davidson as the Lady Catamounts dropped their Southern Conference opener 84-66 Sunday in the John M. Belk Arena. Western Carolina falls to 3-5 and 0-1 in the Southern Conference while Davidson improves to 4-6 and 3-0 in the SoCon. Johnson, from Seymour, Tennessee, finally had her breakout game, this year, after playing only 11 games in 2007-08 due to a season-ending injury. She had been flirting with a “big game” with three double figure performances, 13, 12 and 10 points, this season and almost scored that combined in the contest against the Wildcats. Johnson’s 26 points was 33 percent of the Lady Catamounts offense and she also connected on 36 percent of the team’s field goals, as she had eight of the club’s total 22 field goals in the game. She also keeps her streak alive with a block against the Wildcats - she has had at least one block in the first eight games of the season. Western Carolina came out on fire in the first two plus minutes of the game going on an 11-0 run. The Lady Catamounts held Davidson without a field goal for the six minutes of the game until Ashley Lax connected on a field goal with 13:10 left in the first half. Davidson scored its first four points of the game on free throws and that note would be what kept Davidson in the game, and what would eventually be the key stat for the Wildcats.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Junior forward Kristen Feemster recorded her first career double-double and Western Carolina women’s basketball picked up its first road win of the season, with a 91-66 Southern Conference victory over Wofford, Tuesday in the Benjamin Johnson Center. The Lady Catamounts improve to 4-5 and even their SoCon record to 1-1 while Wofford falls to 1-8 and 0-3 in the conference. Feemster had a big game, coming off the bench to score a career-high 13 points and tie her career-high with 11 rebounds. She scored nine of her points in the first half. Senior center Brooke Johnson led all scorers with 19 points and just missed a doubledouble of her own with nine rebounds. Fellow senior Lauren Powell was the third Lady Catamount to score in double figures with 12 points. In the game, all 12 Western Carolina players saw action and everyone got in the scoring column. Western Carolina opened the game slow trailing early, 2-0, and tied the game at four before going on a 22-4 run, in a seven minute span, that was capped off by a threepointer by Johnson - who was 2-of-2 from the three-point line and has hit two or more treys in her last two games. Western Carolina nearly doubled Wofford in the rebounding column, crashing the boards for a season-high 54 rebounds and only giving up 35 to the Terriers. The Lady Catamounts scored 40 of their points in the paint and got 45 points from the bench.
